there were big issues on the horizon.The West is crying out for reductions in the tariff, which, to say the least, will have to be readjusted.The consumer in the East also asks for relief.Neither did he think very much of a tariff commission, or any other irresponsible body, attempting to shift the responsibility from the ministers’ shoulders.Trusts, combines and mergers, he said, must not rule the country.Also for .the near future, the speaker said that the Liberal party would reorganize and with a great cause and a great leader they would rise again.Sir Wilfrid Laurier was seventy, but they would remember that Gladstone was seventy-two when he made his famous Midlothian campaign.Consequently there was no reason for discouragement.at PERRIN COMPANY TO REBUILD ITS FACTORY.Lowdon.Ont, Dec, 17.—The management of the D.S.Perrin Company, whose premises were badly damaged by fire on Friday night, are waiting on the insurance valuators before taking any steps in regard to rebuilding.Anything to be done will be on the present site.The firm will not move out of the city.A factory alongside a railroad would save the firm immense sums in cartage, but it would be hard to secure labor to go to the outskirts of the city.During the fall the company has secured estimates for the rebuilding of the old portion of the “factory fronting on Casting street, but it was decided to leave this over until the spring.The plans for the reconstruction now will include this improvement.The employees of the candy departraent, numbering about 250.will be put to work as soon as a settlement with the insurance companies is secured.POM ERY COWARDLY ASSAULT ON LLOYD GEORGE Seriously Injured by Being Struck by a Box Thrown by a Male Suffragist, London, Dec.16-——David Lloyd- George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, was seriously injured while leaving à Women's Liberal meeting here this evening, at which he had just made an address.A male suffragist hurled a brass-bound box at the Chancellor, which struck him fall in the face, cutting his lip and badly injuring his eye.A, doctor who attended the Chancellot's injuries said that he had a narrow escape from losing the eye.Sir Edward Grey and Mr.Lloyd-George both addressed the meeting.in favor of including female franchise in the Government's suffrage bill next year.The police had taken extraordinary precautions to exclude militant suffragists from the meeting, but evidently some of them forced their way through the barrier.THE DEATH ROLL.Ottawa, Dec.17.—Danie! Kramer and Moran, Halstead and Drobach, Pye and Collins, Cameron and Magin.Demara and Lawrence.Lorenz and Saldow, 2.718 miles, 8 laps; Hall and Bedell, 2,718 miles, 7 laps; Georget and Brocco, 2,717 miles; Lapize and Van Houwaert, 2717 miles, 6 laps.Frank Kramer, of East Orange, N.J., the national sprint champion, and James Moran, of Chelsea, Mass., were the second place winners.Kramer won the position for his team in a sprint in which he, with Drobach, Lorenz, Magin, Lawrence and Pye, were nominated to represent their teams— all tied a lap behind the winners—to decide the six’ places after the first.The final one-mile sprint was won from a standing start.Kramer took the lead in the third lap, cutting out à fast pace until the sixth lap, when Magin punctured a tire and the race was stopped.Kramer for a time refused to go on, claiming that the bell was rung for the final lap and he in the lead.Kramer finally put in a written protest to the referee and agreed to start.After a delay of an hour they were sent away.Lorenz did not start, claiming that he rode ten laps to Kramer's nine, and declaring that he won sccond money.He put in a protest.The five men finished as follows: Kramer, Lawrence Drobach, Magin and Pye.The order of standing of the first six teams thus is: Fogler and Clarke, Kramer and Moran.Demara and Lawrence, Halstead and Drobach, Cameron and Magin, Pye and Collins.| ore interest was shown by the general public in this yer's race than in many years, the attendance breaking all records.In one particular, it was unique and this was that only one lap was stolen during the week—and that one the lap that gave the lead and ultimate victory to Fogler and Clarke, and effectually disposed of the Kramer-Moran team, regarded as the most dangerous rival of the Broobivnlite and the Australian.°°" ROM DEATH § Steel Engraviags INE Steel Engravings, a F for quick clearante to, each.EMBER 18, 1911, ed subjects, size 22x34 inches, immense quantity op ale Monday.regular price 75c cach, reduced Che Quebec Chronicle QUEBEC, MONDAY, DEC ssort- COM 49€ DAQU Retail Division, 157-173 St.Joseph Street l' Tomperatures Minimum, 22;
