United States Consuls to seek protection at the seaports.Dr.Williams encloses a leter from the Sia Huei Reform Society of Kutien, setting forth briefly in characteristic Chinese style the measures the Chinese themselves had taken to protect missionaries. The letter says: “We have just heard that the honorable church missionaries, on account fo the uprising of the New Association (the revolution) with their just issue, have been called by your honorable Consul to the capital to be protected in peace. This is a good plan, arising from a good purpose. However, the people of Kutien have become very much enlightened and their customs changed. The people and the church are all at peace.Your honorable church has opened schools, hospitals, ‘orphanages and similar good things. Not one of these but is gratifying to the hearts of the people.Although the people of Kutien are a simple foik, still they have seen and appreciated these things. If you (missionaries) should suddenly go from Kutien, ve greatly fear that the people would/be alarmed, and then matters would be worse than they are.If you stay, this will not be the case. This society humbly requets that you permit them to persuade you to remain.Should anything unfore- feen occur, we should, of course, exert ourselves to protect you and your property. We are quite sure that we can afford efficient protection. We await your views and wish you peace and happiness.” Dr.Williams adds that the Chinese Reform Society has organized home guards under the leading men of the surrounding towns for the protection of life and propesty, and is doing much other useful work, including almost the entire banishment of opium.NEW YEAR HOLIDAY EXCURSIONS FROM NEW ENGLAND TO MONTREAL AND QUEBEC.Arrangements have been made CLOSING LETTER, By private wire.Neuville Belleau & Co., 93 St.Peter street, Quebec.Phone 946.New York, Dec.21—The stôck mar- et to-day cofitinued firm, despite a drive by the bear party during the early trading, the recovery showing that the trend is still upwird, though the outside ‘interest is rifher negligible. The resiliency displayed by Lehigh Valley encouraged sentiment.it being apparent that the failare of the directors to cut a melon at this time was causing no liquidation by well: informed holders. In contrast to the general list, the Gould stocks were again weak, specially Denver preferred, which droped 5 points on poor earnings shown by the system.Texas Pacific was also sympathetically lower and the general tendency of the professional element was to.fight shy of the Gould group. Some disappointment was felt over the declaration of only the regular dividend on Louisville & Nashville, but the stock acted fairly well.Copper shares reflected the strength in the metal, which is now quoted at 14% cents by the larger interests, the producers’ figures for December being expected to show up well.Big orders will be placed for steel rails, it is said, and there will be an advance in tubes and other minor products soon.Earnings, however, will reflect the low prices for some time to come so that the Stee! stocks seem to fiave done a considerable amount of discounting. The market held well during the afternoon, though showing a holiday tendency and acted as if it would see better prices before the end of the year.NEW YORK CLOSING LETTER.Received over the private wire of McDougall and Cowans, Stock brokers, 81 Si Peter street.New York, Dec.21.—The opening was moderately active with only trifling prices changes.Lehigh Valley was heavy from the start and around half-past ten a little drive was made it the market on which Lehigh Valley itself sold down to 180 and the reat of the list sympathized, with moderate declines all slong the line.rom this decline.however, prices rallied well and in the afternoon the market turned quite strong, Lehigh Valley selling up as high as 184%, or 3% per cent above the low price of the morning. The copper stocks were all strong.as was Smelters and Union Pacific next to Lehigh Valley acted shout 2a well as anything on the list, On announcement of a regular dividend for Louisville & Nashville, tha: stock broke from 157 to 155%, ind the whole list reached moderately, but there was no pressure of stock, trading almost censing on the decline. On the while, it was essentially à pee-holi- day market, but with an excellent tone, and the majority of stocks showed net gains as a result of a small day's trading.En tha early dealings, TE STANDARD LE ASEIRA mulated Funds at 15th November, 1010.8 62,217.218.87 ubsisting Assurances at 15th November, 1910 143,273,110.00 laimg Paid .evenue for the Year.!
