Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Cou Trouble Was, as Usual, Scandalous Conduct lums Damages the Liberal Cause MR.ALLEYN TASCHEREAU WON SUCCESS Yesterday, heing th: last Sunday before polling day, political meetings were held in nearly every county ii the province, and in this district, in almost every case, these meetings were of a contradictory natére.Unfortunately, rain began to fall in most places about noon and had à certsin effect in reducing the attendance, but the great majority of those present remained to the end of the meetings. The results as re:eived last ~veniug from this district is most encouraging for the opposition party, which has bern daily gaining ground in the different constituencies.County of Quebec. The candidates had arranged three meetings {or yesterday, Heauport ait-.er mais, Sillrry after vespers ans at Ancierme Lorette in the evening, aii meetings being largely attended. The parish of Beauport, which is the largest i the county, is a Liberal strong- hoid, and as & rule when candidates meet there is a certain amount of spuble.Yesterday's meeting was no exception to this rule, and as a free train carried about 800 Quebecers to he parish, it was surmised that some- hing unusual was going td happen, and the 3000 spectators preseat were in no way disappointed. As it was reported that Hon.L.P, Pelletier, postmaster-geræral.was xo- ing to be present, a regularly organized gang of hoodiums was reudy to receive him with interruptions and in this they were successful to a certain extent, as Hon.Mr.Pelletier had to eut his speech short. The conduct of the crowd was at times most scan- dajous, ‘and hay Joonsmbeideralie ‘ hirfm.to the success of the Liberal: candidate, who, however, -cannot bej directly blamed for what occurred, in particular with the discharge of arms in a nearby barn, by a gang of young men who apparently had received orders from some leacdgr.Messrs.Tascherezu and Cannon ere also interrupted during their ddresses.‘As stated before, this meeting was | attended by several thousand people : from all over the county and city of ; Quebec, and besides those carried by | trains there were over 100 vehicles | and automobiles on the main road.; The meeting was started about i o'clock, the mayor of the parish presiding and announcing that both parties ‘would be allowed on hour and a quarter each, with 10 minutes’ reply for Mr, Delage. The latter opened the meeting, speaking for half an hour, and was quietly listened to, and oceasionally applauded by his friends. He strongly eulogized the Gouin administration for what they had done for the farmers and laboring classes, spoke of tre good roads scheme, while at the same time objecting to Hon.Mr.Pel- Tetier, the federal minister, interfering in the present election, which | should be left tu be fought out between Mr.Alleyn Taschereau and- himself, ‘ Mr.Alleyn Taschereau followed and bégan by referting to the lying attacks upon Mr.Lavergne and himself in Le Soleil and other Liberal organs, a special derial being made to the declaration of Mrs.Guimont, of | Cap St.Ignace against Mr.Lavergne himself, which was read by Mr.Patry, advocate, on Friday last, in Montmagny, and which appeared in Saturdas‘y Le Soleil.Mr.Taschereau explained the transaction to the satisfaction of the electors, who received his statement with considerable ap- | plause. He charged these Liberal organs with columinating and making false statements against their opponents just two days before the elec tion when they were aware that it was almost too late to bring them to time.Le Soleil makes it a business to probe the private life of anyone who is opposing the Gouin candidates and if the Liberal organ did not cease spreading out their slanderons and lying reports he would also take a hand in the game and make certain charges against two very prominent people, bigh up in governmen: circles, The opposition candidate then spoke on the provincial issues of the day.being frequently interrupted hy a couple of gangs who remained together in front of the gallery, from which the speakers addressed the meeting, and among whom several well.knawn St.Roch's Liberals were seen to take an important part. However, notwithstanding these interruptions, Mr.Tascherean had a very large numher of sympathizers pres.net.who did not fail to give him a most hearty ;eception. The next speaker was Mr, Lucien Cannon, advocate.who spent moat of the 40 minutes allotted to him in speaking on federal politica and charging Hon.Mr.Pelletier and the Rorden government with not having repealed the navy law.which Me, Pelletier promised the electors tn have repealed during the last electoral! campaign. He then accused the post- master-genersl of not having any particular party and being a traitor to TRY YESTERDAY Evident in Beauportof Gang of Hoodhis fellow countrymen aad political friends, and did rat cven forget to refer to Hon.Mr, Mercier and Louis Reil's death. He got Ws shart of applousé, but 83 Mr.Taschereau had been interrupted by Mr.Delage's sympathizers from the city, Mr.Can- Reil's death. He got his share of these interruptions, and he was frequently reminded to leave federal politics alone and to limit his remarks to the provincial issues. This advice from a large number of voters did not appear to please Mr.Cannon, who at times got mad and told the inter.ruptors that whether they interrupted him or not he would take up his 40 minute's thas limit.Hon.Mr.Pelletier then advanced and got a most enthusiastic reception, the cheering and applause lasting a few trinutes. The postmaster-general by thanking his friends for their hearty recepti-n and remarked that if he had taken off his hat it was not to the impudent beardless youth, barely out of college, who is sent around this district by the Liberal party to insult public men.(Prolonged applause.) He (Mr.Cannon) was sent out specially for that object and was like Senator Choquette, who | had attacked him at Lorette on Wednesday last, but as the senator had received such a calling down on that occasionfi he was not anxious to meet the speaker again, and Mr.Cannon had heen sent along to do the dirty work of him party. He (Mr.Pelletier) was present to approve of the candidature of Mr.Alleyn Taschereau, and predicted à victory for him on Wednesday next, when the Gouin admifiétration would be Imocked out of existence. The young speaker who had preceded him_had viade several charges against him and had even referred to Louis Real and the late Hon.Mercier.He had even found fault with the present administration for not having repealed the navy act, when he was well aware that nothing could be done with the Niobe and Rainbow, which had been bought and paid.for, and he well knew that Premier Borden had informed the House that nothing would be dose unfil the navy act would be submitted to the people.Just then a discharge oi a rifle, closely followed by several others, was heard in &'barn a few yards away. The gang cried out, “Here comes the Niobe.” The speaker interrupted his speech and remarked, “Wait a few minutes and ! will tell you all about the navv.” This remark brouhht considersble applause from the crowd, and the postmaster- gencral proceeded to refer to the inet that Mr.Delage found fault with him for talking on federal tnatters, when | his friend Cannon had not done anything else.Bang! Bang! again came from the barn, which again caused Mr.Pelletier to stop his remarks as the gang in front of the stand applauded the actions of the firing par ty.The mayor of the parish several times called for grder, as he had done ! when the other speakers were inter.| | rupted, but it was all tv no avail, Finally, Hon.M.Pelletier intiinated that Mr.Delage was aware that: gangs had been organized to prevent him peaking, and that they: were afraid that he would carry the meeting, Mr, Delage denied the charge.remarking that he and Mr.Alfred Robitaille, one of Mr.Taschereau's supporters, would go tn the baer and have a parley with the intruders. This wes done and both Messrs.Delage and Robitaille immediately advised the firing party, which was composed of young stock brokers, private wire to New York and Montreal, Hochelaga Bank Building, Telephone 1227.(Canadian Press Service.) ‘New: York, ‘May | 11 — Although tiuch ‘of the activity of today's stuck market centered ahout the minor $pe- cialtics, the movement was at all times broad ind the undertone distinctly strong.Lehih Valley was the most prominent feature of the standard railway group, opening with a point rise.which it soon increased to two paints and before the end of the first liout had extended to three. Some of the oll rumors affecting Lehigh Valley were in circulation, for example, one to the effect that the directors would before long decide upon another issue of valuable “rights.” This report, that have preceded it.found no coun- Jdenance in official quarters.Readingwhich at first wae inclined to lag, soon took its part in the rise, though at no time sn conspicuous as Lehigh Valley, Union Pacific and a few other high grade railway securities advanced to higher prices, but the entire movement was overshadowed by Lehigh Valley. In the industrial division United States Steel was the most active issue, reflecting by its strength yesterday’s announcement of another rice in prices of finished products, the second of the week and its unexpectedly good showing of unfilled orders as of May 1.Other industrials that advanced from 1 to 2 points included Internaticnal Harvester.American Tobacen, General Electric, Westinghouse, North American and American Writing Paper preferred.American Can common and preferred repeated their now familiar feat of advancing to higher prices than before.a fact which may not have been unrelated ta the strength of the anthracite cnal- ers.Coppers were firm on some slight renewal of foreign demand.hut the market as a whole derived much of its bullish impulse from the opti- mistie views as to general conditions expressed hy a recognized leader of the steel and iron industry, The movement g: tered great force and strength in the second hour, Lehigh Valley rising over four points and Reading 2, while a score of ordinarily dormant industrials were advanced from 1 to almost 3 Points. The one-sided character of the market was demonst ated in the fact that.aside from the enalers, less than half a dozen active railroad stocks shared in the rise.Prices fell back here and there in the final dealings, hut the closing, while less active, was very strong.Total dealings of the two hours aggregated 478.000 shares, almost as much as the overturn of «ome of the full five-hour sessions of the carly week.Que securities made a creditable showing in London, where United States Steel was the leader, and later operations for foreign account in that stock were continued here.Purchases for London in this market were estimated at over 20000 shahes. The Paris hourse was steady, with dullness in Rerlin.Domestic trade conditions, acenrd- ing to the mercantile agencies, con- tite somewhat irregular, but husi- ness fn general is on a larger scale than‘ at this period lasf year.Adverse crop pfospects and the severe flrode in the South are among the The Standard
