Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

IHercules. The world will know no deviation from the steady noonday glare—that there will be no night - The terrific glare, if it does not burn the world up and shrivel mankind into a grease spot, will make all sorts of peculiar changes in the solar system. The Cluster of Hercules has beet studied for years by the most able astronomers, It will he many aeons before the world will find itself in the midst of these brilliant stars.Nearly in the line with the direction of the solar system's motion through space lies a cluster of bright stars. Are we, perhaps, destined to join that wonderful assemblage?Such à consummation of the great light of the earth is possi- e.That star cluster toward which we are journeying is one of the supreme marvels of the universe.Tt is heliev- ed to contain from 12,000 to 14.000 stars, crowded so closely together that in a telescope their light blends in an almost distinguishable blaze. In the central parts it is impossible to separate the individual stars.Around the outskirts of the cluster they are more widely scattered.Long rows of them are arrayed like the winding lanes and streets in the slums of a city.Toward this wonderful metropolis of intersteilar spacec we are speeding at the rate of 12 miles a second. In the course of an ordinary lifetime we draw more than 2,000,000,000 miles nearer to it, and yet its distance is so xreat that it does not seem percepti- hiy to have been aproached.À slight change in the directcion of our flight would send us straight ito the heart of the cluster at the end of our journey.Tf, escaping all the verils of the way, we should actcually arrive there, what would happen? There might be a collision, or there might not. That would depend entirely upon the direction of our motion at the moment that we entered the company.Owing to the multiplicity of attractions acting simultaneously from so many stars, the chances are that a collision would not ocur and that our sun.ccarrying the planets with it.would hecome a memher of the assemblage on equal terms with the others. The distance of the Cluster of Hercules is almost inconceivable. The first hint of the glories in store would he furnished hy the appearance of the cluster itself.Ac the earth drew nearer it would expand until it filled half the firmament with its splendor. The rest of the universe would he forgotten and utterly disregarded in the indescribable glory of that spectacle. On a dark, clear night we can see about 3,000 stars with the naked eye.On entering the Cluster of Hercules we would see 14000 «tars incomparably brighter than any of the dozen of the first magnitude at present visible to us.25 Persons petual Daylight Their united light would shed upon us an effulgence brighter than that of the fuil moon. This would be the be- ginning—the first hint—of what was coming, As the earth continued to approach the splendor would rapidly increase.Soon those stars would be no longer stars, but suns in brilliance. It can be shown mathematically that in the midst of such a cluster perpetual daylight would prevail. No matter though the earth continue tr turn on its axis so that the sun would rise and set alternately, us at present, vet all sides of it would he forever illuminated by the othher suns around it.If humanity could continue to exist under such conditions, the whole scheme of life would he changed. When the sun was set the illumination from the stars would not be.quite as brilliant as that of full daylight.but still the sky would be so radiantly resplendent that one would hardly know which to call day and which night.Tt would he a realization of Bunyan's ideal picture of the “City of the Golden Streets and Pearly Gates.” But everything would he in motion. The change of position of the multitude of suns surrounding us would be continualy evident, Our own sun would fall into an orbit of amazing complexity.ard with the carth chasing after it would he now near the centre of the great cluster.where the stars are so closely packed.and now on its outskirts, where they are relatively scattered. So the aspect of the " leavens would be undergoing continual changes. The sky would hea gigantic kaleidoscope, cceaselessly turning and at every moment pret senting a new and mare wonderful combination of starry splendors.Among the contending attractions of so many suns the earth might be torn away from the control of ite own sun and fall under the dominion of another, And this could happen again and again.to that in the course of time our planet would he the slas of gravitation to many suns in turer. And with every change of master would come ta a change nf solar influences acting upon the globe.and the conditions of life would vary accordingly. With the aid cf a new instrument known as the Rumford spectrohelia- graph.Philip Fox.of the Yerkes oh- servatory, has seccured some interesting photographs of solar promi- nences.Tn princciple the instrument is a spectroscacpe and is
