hands of the jury.Mr.Justice Carroll, of the Criminal Court of King’s Bench, finished his charge at 5.40 last evening. The jury retired, but came back to the court room at 8 o'clock, when Foreman PROCEEDINGS.When the Court convened yesterday morning, the first witness called was M Marier of St.Romuald, who testified that he saw Shields leave the car on the night of the 6th of August last, but did not see any knife in his hand. The prisoner seemed to be going away.He saw one or the tramway employees run after Shields and sttempt to strike him twice. The second time he succeeded in landing a blow.He saw Constable Langlois ar- give on the scene in his shirt sleeves brandishing a revolver and calling to the accused to give himself up.All the time Shields was retreating, walking backwards by Troubles of Steamer In Discharging.|, The sad need of the equipment of the Part -of bec is forcibly dem- “onstrated these days in the difficulty the S.S.Bengord ead, which recently went ashore at” Flower Island, is baving in discharging her cargo of Ti ¥ fi steamer, which has been repeatedly in trouble, went ashore at Flower Island, st the entrance to the Straits of Belle Isle and was obliged to jettison the greater part of her deck cargo of timber aud put back to Quebec, where she arrived on Sunday last, The following day divers were sent down to examine her bottom, and reported that the vessel was badly demaged under Compartments: 1 and 2, but that they were not leaking and the vessel is easily kept afloat by her tanks.; It was then decided to discharge lthe ship's eargo of grain, flour, tira- ber and lumber and have her go into the Levis dry dock for repairs. The Bengore Head is lying at the western cross wall of the Louise tidal hasin, engaged An the discharge of her cargo before going into dock. The 400 standard of deals she carried and flour in bags are being taken out without difficulty and with quick despatch by Stevadore Micheal Konney, but the trouble to he met with in the storage of the ship's loose grain. There are stored in the ship's hold 33,000 bushels of grain that must be taken out by means of buckets, loaded into curts and then driven to the old C.P.R.grain elevator, now the property of the Quebec Harbar Commission for storage.Elevator Is Insufficient. This grain elevator is leased to Mr.Richardson, of Kingston, and iu its present condition is no better thanan Grdiary store building. There is no hopper connected with it, or conveyer of any kind that coutd be used to convey the grain from a vessel into the elevator, The former Harbor Commission last spring agreed tr, ameliorate these conditions by adding a hopper and otherwise equipping the elevator with up-to-date accommodations. The contract was awarded to Mr.Jameson, of Montreal, who failed to keep his engagerients, hence the continued crude conditions of the so-called elc- vator, that is of little use as it now stands, and compels the Bengbre Head to discharge her cargo by means of buckets into carts and by that means carried to the elevator storage.E.C.Fry.Lloyd's agent at Quebec, and one af the most practical shipping men in connection with the St.Lawrense toute, speaking of the dif- fieultiod that the Yengore Head was mecting with ia the discharge of the grain in her holds, said yesterday that the non-equipment of the Port of Quebec was not onlÿ lamentable.but a cause of great expense te shipping in general.Port Without An Elevator. He said that ever since the Great Northern slevator was destroyed by fire the port was without the convenience of an elevator, he auly one in existence was-the old C.P.Rbuilding that was mi‘us a hopper and unable to eanvev grain from a vessel into ity storage. In consequence of this great drawback the Bengore Head had to resort to a most primitive method of discharging her grain cargo, which was necessary before she was taken to St.Joseph de Levis and there placed in the dry.dock for rEpairs, This necessitated considerable expense, more than four times the amount that it would cost if the port was properly equipped, and had at least one elevator in proper condition to use, In order to discharge the grain, carts would have to be used to carry it to storage, which meant a loss of 10 per cent of the grain by waste to say nothing of the slow and expansive process of the unloading. The sooner these conditions are mended the hetter for the reputation and the business of the port.FIRE ON LOUISE EMBANKMENT coal clams on the western end of the Louise Embankment, about {1 o’c'cok last Meet Shipping Demands. The present !.evis dey.dock is badly in need of new equipment that will at least make it of some value to ships obliged to seck its service for repairs. The Levis dry dock was built some thirty years ago, and in its day served its purpose.‘But in these days, it has not only become too small for the large liners navigating the St.Lawrence, but is now obsokte owing to the lack of up-to-date equipment, During the fifteen years the former Libera! Government held office, the dock was entirely neglected, notwith- ctanding repeated complaints made {rom time to time.by those in charge of the dock and also by the shipping interested. This fact was made clear in a recent investigation held in this city at the request of the present government, to learn ii the many complaints made were justified.Though the result of this investigation was forwarded ia a report to the Government, it has not as yet been made public. It has leaked out, however, that the report is a strong arraignment of the former Liberal Goveriument for it: neglect ta do anything whatever to better the cunditions of the duck, fre- | quently complained of during the whole fifteen years it held office.Pumps Are Obsolete. The greatest complaint made is the absalete pumps in use to pump the water out of the dock after a vessel enters. It takes some fifteen hours with these pumps to reach the bottom of the vessel, while the up-to-date pumps used in dry docks at New York, Bermuda and other ports, only take three hours.Another complaint is the absence of capstans on the top of the dock, useful for various purposes, and ‘especially as an aid to help to dock a ship. There is also no moving crane, a commodity at all times in demand, and though requested repeatedly, a deaf ear was at all times turned to the demand. In alt cases when a ship was in course of repair the workmen have been obliged to erect a stage with the necessary purchase to lower and lift material nceded for repairs, and frequently no less than 20-ton weights have had to be lowered or hauled up by this means, which has been the cause of much delay, let alone difficulty and danger of handiing, which would have been avoided if a moving crane had been installed. These are only a few instances of the obsolete conditions of the Levis dry dock, that the present Government will have to improve if the dock is to be adequate fur the repairing of those ships which it is big enough to accommodate.SALE.The Ladies’ Aid of St.Andrew's Church will hold their annua! was “feeling fine” and ready to receive visitors, but Mrs.Roosevelt gave him no opportunity to pass upon her ruling, for she made it on her own authority and saw to it that it was enforced. She received the cards and messages fo: her husband and sent back her replies, with the result that the Colonel himself did not known who wished to sec him, + Colonel's Campaign Done. The impression grew to-day (hat Col.Roosevelt would he able to do little or nothing more in the cam- aign.Althqugh he expressed the ope of leaving for Oyster Bay on Sunday, it is probable he will be compelled to remain in the hospital for at least à week longer and that after his arrival at Fame he will not be permitted to plunge into the campaign again.Associates of Col.Roosevelt said that while he was deeply disappointed at being obliged to leave the fight during the closing weeks, when it was to be hardest, he was showing nn concern as to the possible effect of his removel from the field of battle.lt is Col.Roosevelt's desire to make at least ong more speech before elec: tion day, and that in bis own state of New York.1f he can do nathing else he hopes tq sneak in Madisag Square Garden, “ol All: women got bilique, hepdachy 3»d constipated—eimply becyuse they don'y exercige enough. They don't at cars food, or enough fruit and green vegetables. Those are nature's ways of keeping the liver snd thirty feet of bowels active; but very few women employ them. The next best way is delightful, fquity Syrup of Figs.Nearly all ills of yomen can be ovgrcome with Syrup of Figs along.Thess is ao need to have pick hea ache, backache, dixginess, stomach your and full of gases, bilioug spells, sallownesy, coated fongue, bad breath, bad complexion, nervousness and depression. The surest and safest rerhedy is one or twq teaspoonfuls of delicious Syrup of Rigs.Try this to- night—you'll {eel splendid in the morn- Waste-clogged bowels, torpid.liver and decaying food fn stons ach cayse of sick headache, gas, beckache, alipw- | _ ma" biliousness and indigestion, .s ~ Tg + ‘ re Tama ra MADAM | IF YOU DON'T FEEL RIGHT °° JA TAKE DELICIOUS SYRUP OF FIGS.2 ey ~ ing when the sour bile, clogged oy waste and polsonous matter bave bode gently but’ thoroughly moved on and out & yopr system, without nausep, griping or weskness Your head will be clesr, complexion rosy, breath sweef, stomach regulated ; no more constipation, gases, paing and aches.: If © simply 3 matter of keepin your oo is liver god bow: s ess and regular. Then you wil always be well—elways look and feel your: 8 .‘ Bat the genuine—the oM ref-| able.Ask y druggist for “Syrup!
