SHOULD BE MADE TO BRING THEM HERP —_— Montreal, June 9=T.W.Sheffield, former industrisl commissioner for Regina, has arrived in the city after a twelve months’ tour in England, where he has been engaged in the organization of the Canadian Information and Development Bureau. The Canadian Information Bureau makes its appeal chiefly to the “middle classes” of England. It is Mr.Sheffield's contention that these classes have in the past been disregarded in publicity and immigration work.A free inquiry department to be established in connection with the Bureau will supply reliable first-hand information about prospects in any particular field of activity.“I contend,” Mr, Shefield said.“that the middle classes of England, who are recognized as being the leaders and backbone of the country in art, literature, and science, have been neglected by the Dominion, and provincial Governments, and by the local Boards of Trade tn Canada.“With regard to the assistance which we hope to give to British manufacturers, we shall particularly endeavor to sti the trade in products, which agg abt manufacsared Nn Camada, so t ere will be no Question of compétiag with Canadian factories. The competition will, therefore, rather be between English manufacturers and those of the United States.I know from experience that a large part of the Canadian trade now in the hands of American manufacturers,, could be captured by British firms. The bureau will give to manufacturers any information they may need, and investors and small traders will receive every assistance it is possible to give.“There are hundreds of quickly rising towns in Canada, of which United States manufacturers supply about two-thirds of the commodities, owing principally to the apathy of the manufacturers of Great Britain, An awakening is necessary if the trade between Canada and Great Britain is to be stimulated.” Mr.Sheffield is at present touring through Canada, lecturing and meeting presidents of Boards of Trade, with a view to the formation of an associated Board of Trade for Canada.with a central bureau in London, and branch bureaus in other cities.HRI EEE
