London, Aug.16—The left wing of the Bavarian army under Prince Leopold has fought its way across the Bug river near Drohiczyn, which lies to the east of Sokolow and is some fifty miles north-west of Brest-Litovsk, according to the offical Berlin report. This move forms a slight wedge in the Russian front, which had been virtually straight since the Warsaw salient was abandoned.: Field Marshal Von Mackensen also is reported to be pushing back the Russians along the Bug, where the Germans are advancing along the eastern bank of that river.Farther west Field Mrashal Von Hindenburg is credited with a successful attack on the advanced defenses of Kovno as well as a successful attempt to break the Russian lines between the Narew and the Bug after the Norzew river had been crossed by the Germans. These forced the most critical movements of the day, but they attract less attention here than the diplomatic negotiations in the Balkans, where the crisis has not yet been reached. The most significant phase of today's news ‘concerning the Near Eastern situation was contained in a brief despatch from Athens stating that former President Venizelos had won a decisive victory over the government in the organization of the Greek Chamber-of Deputies. The withdrawal of the Bulgarian delegates from Constantinople caused much speculation here, the consensus of opinion being that Turkey is so confident of her present position that she does not feel under any compulsion to make concessions to Bulgaria's desires. The usual grenade and mine fighting is reported on the western line, and there has been some activity along minor front in the Caucasus, where the Russians ciaim that they haae successfully repulsed Turkish attacks. At Livingstone, on the Rhodesian border in South Africa, a British force which had been | besieged by a German detachment _is reported ta have finally drivep off the besiegers.: _… >, A German submafine boat has shelled three towns ‘on the Cumberland coast of England.Several fires were started by chells from the underwater boat and the railroad was damaged, but there were no casualties, it is said, as a result of the attack.Except in their financial columns, the newspapers pay little attention to the decline in sterling exchange. The government has given no hint of any plan it may be considering to relieve the situation, which the leading financial authorities here regard as decidedly serious.BULGARIA'S AID COMMUNICATION WITH TURKEY MUST BE ESTABLISHED SAYS BERLIN PAPER.THE RID GRANDE AMERICAN CAVALRYMAN .1I8 REPORTED KILLED found this evening in the basement of the East Block of the Dominion Public Buildings caused a flutter of excitement among the Dominion police by whom the discovery was made. There was enough of the explosives, had it been placed there with hostile intent, to have wrecked the main portion of the building. There are circumstances, however, which incline the police to the belief that the dynamite must have been intended for the Public Works Départment and was carelessly delivered, or rather left, at the wrong address. In the basement of the East Block, near the west tower, and almost directly under the offices of the Gov- ernor-General and the Prime Minister, is a small room used as an office by a foreman of the Public Works Department who attends to repair work in the Justice and neighboring departments. It was in this room that the dynamite was found by a Dominion policeman on his rounds at 6 o'clock.: The explosive lay upon the desk, done up as an ordinary parcel in paper wrapping.Above it was a card on which was penciled in what were intended to be conspicuous letters the warning: Dangerous.Don't handle.Dynamite.And beside the parcel lay a bill, addressed to the Public Works Depart: ment, for twelve sticks of dynamite, from a well known hardware firm on Suesex street. The usual! occupant of the room had quit work for the day and there was no one about who had seen the package placed there.Neither had the police any immediate clew to the party who delivered the gooda in this haphazard fashion, although for some time a strict scrutiny of all strangers entering or leaving the public build ings has been enjoined by Dominion police headquarters and only one door in each huilding is open for traffic after § o'clock in the evening.Police officials AGAIN.Unlike the submarine, the Zeppelin does not number its machines dy the hundred, but the fact remaies that Cerman aircraft, since the war be gas, have killed seventy-five persons in Ragland alone. They Save been still more active ia France, while even remeate Russis hes not escaped the visitation.Apparently, the sole purpose of such raids is to frighten the civilian population. The mortality is not large enough to count in the war.More men are probably lost in an attack on a three-hundred-yard trench M France than went to their death from Zeppelin attacks since the war started. But it is well to remember that even with the terrors of the air, familiarity breeds contempt.Parisians who ran to cover when the first German Taube hovered over their city, now watch the ungainly monster amusedly, an-l | wager on his success in getting away from the firing soldiers below, ani the hostile craft above. The war has taught the world many things, and habituated civilization to horrors that would have been deemed stupendious a year and a half ago.and the universal hope Is that with the return of peace we shall have a return of human charity and mercy.and that the Taube and the submarine shall be forgotten.ad SOD BSOORAOND AON) a “ PRESS COMMENT.% “oonmagogoocauans Following the fall of Warsaw, it was generally surmised there would be a renewal of Allied activity in the Dardenelles campaign, and apparently this anticipation is well on the way to realization. Moreover, it can be taken fo! granted that once Baïkan nations see the Turk in danger of hav ing his southern defences wrenched from his grasp, they will tumble over themselves in their anxiety to joia the Allies in administering the final coup de grace, not only to the Sultan, hut to his Teuton masters as well. The British commander on the Gallipoli peninsula, Sir Ian Hamilton, whom the late Lord Roberts once de.seribed as “the best general of his dag,” is daily adding to the reputation he gained in the South African war.His work there stamped him as a skilful commander who knew when to strike. When he did strike he struck with the suddenness of a thunderbote. That he has lost nothing of his cunning in this direction is shown bx the Iatest despatches from the Dardanelles. Here he has played one of his reserve cards dy the unexpected landing of forces at Avi Burnu, a feat which has taken the “unspeakable Turk” by complete surprise, for ho less than 630 prisoners, several big guns, and a large quantity of war material fell into British hands. In view of the guarded despatch from fhe victorious commander, however, per estimate of all that this swecess portends.General Hamilton names no point where another fanding was effected, but according to Turkish reports, troops were put ashore at Karachali, the furthest point up the Oult of Saros.‘The Turks claim that this force was dispersed, and this has given rise to an impression in London that it was a feint attack.A military critic, however, points out that this scarcely seems likely, for two of vious reasons.First, from the fact that it was delivered at a point so remote from the other landing place at Avi Burny, and second, because Karachali offers a splendid base for gp- erations against the Bulair lines, the Turks’ last defensive position in the Peninsula. An advance im this ares would effectually imprison the Furkish forces from Galipoli to Krithia, practically tie whole of the peninsula, and cut off their supplies.Battles ships also could give all the necessary protection in the way of artillery fire to this northern army until such time as gunz could be landed.—-Frederick- ton Gleaner.THE MOUTH ORGAN.Oh, there ain't no band to cheer us up, there ain't head noises will be glau to know that this distressing affliction can be successfully treated at home by an internal remedy that in many instances has effected x complete cure after all else has failed.Sufferers who could scarcely hear a watch tick have had their hearing restord to such an extent that the tick of a watch was plainly audible seven or eight inches away from either ear. Therefore if you know someone who is troubled with head noises oc catarrh, or catarchal deainess, cut out this formula and hand to them, and you will have been the means of saving some poor sufferer perhaps from total deafness. The prescription can be prepared at home, and is made as follows: Secure from your druggist | oz Parmint (Double Strength), about 75¢ worth.Take this home and add to it 1-4 pint of hot water and 4 oz.of granulated sugar; stir until dissolved.Take one table fou rtimes a day.The first dose should begin to re lieve the distressing head moises, headache, duliness, cloudy thinking.etc., while the hearing rapidly returns as the system is invigorated by the tonie action of the treatment.Loos of smell and mucus dropping in the back of the throat, sre other symptoms thet matter of fact, the new title holder is not m conditios for a hard contest, and he would be jeopardizing.his claiz to à million dollars to engage in a ring battle with = serious contender before another half year. The tale floats out of Rochester and but for the fact that it Is attested to by a imlf dozen reputable business men.who have taken oath as to in truthfuiness, the ‘rumor would have to be taken with a few grains of satine sprinklings. This is the story: ile Willard was mobilized in Rochester, with the circus that pays him something like $500 à week fur verfcrming prodigal feats of the plains.with a little boxing on the side, Manager Tom Junes scoured the town for a heavyweight to put on the gloves with Willard fcr three “friend- y" rounds. The loquacious Jones was Introduced to a sizeable fellow who announced himself as Fred Fulton.(Mr.Fultor has been fighting professional- iy for five yeara—ever since the mushroom ‘ white hops” crop began to appear. In fact, Fulton was one of the pioneer “Hopes,” along with Willard end Curl Morris).Jones imformed Fulton that rough work was not to be indulged in.That suited Mr.Fulton.He was led to the camp, the gloves were adjusted and time was called.Willard was fe:ling rather moodish and raked out a long left Fook that woul | have jolted Fulton into the arm of Mcrpheus had it reached its mark.Fulton ducked the blow, and as he came up caught Willard unawares with © right swing to the jaw.The bnees ot big Jess sagged and he sank to the sawdust.Tt was a clean knockdown.Willard took a count, regsii- ed hi, feet and finished out the exhi- tition in good shape.Only the circus attaches, including a number of cowboys and several busi- ress men, saw the exhibition.Nothing was said about the incident until à few days later, when one of the cow punchers suggested that a purse he collecred to have Willard take on Ful: ton in L regular match. That's how it all came out.Of cours” the chances of the Emmets for the pennant will dwindle considerably but if the Patriots land the third win over St.Patrick's.chances will favour Mec- Laughlin's warriors for St.Patrick's will have still two hard games to play while Emmets have only Laval to meet again after next Sunday's game with St.Patrick's.se The question of an umpire for next Sunday's game will be an important one.Drouin while admittedly fair has rot the proper seasoning to handle a game between the two Irish teams who are at present fighting for the leadership. There is no doubt that he would do his best to give justice, however, which is a point not to be overlooked. As to Cote, both clubs will strenuously object to his appointment and there is little likelihood of President Bruneau allotting this task to him.Harry Ledden who with George Cartier handled the games effectively and generally satisfactorily are both unavailable.Ledden ruled Miller out of the game lately for alleged use of insulting language and though his decision was unanimously upheld by the league, the failure of the president to appoint him last Sunday together with the utter incompetancy of the man who replace dhim has been too for the umpire who has decided to resign.George Cartier's failure to appear on the day he was appointed to officiate at the last St.Pat's.—Em- mets game has no doubt been the reason why the league president has not appointed hign recently. However George says there is too little money and too much abuse and when the former Is increased, even she latter may be increased too.a 0 Baseball lovers may laugh at cricket and football and other so-called ancient sports of the old country but there are more sports in the comparatively small crowds which witness these games in Canada than there are in the packed stands which witness ball games.Remember, the writer, is the most ardent baseball devotes that can be found and therefore it is not merely a knock at the rooters, but only plain unvarnished statement of the truth Last Sunday Jack Marks made a couple of tries for foul balls which , would bave brought forth admiration ‘when the first rain-drops are felt, Ce af, from even his bitterest emsmics (mat.at we know of any Jack has). But when he barely missed gathering thm in, hots and jeers greeted hls endeavours while the same crowd shouted out for him to hurry up with the game while He was getting back mask. This is only one example of hundreds and is only quoted as an instance to show to what extent the real sporting spirit bas diminished in the modern day baseball rooter.Try to allow your eye to look at both sides of the question and give your opponents credit for their ach- fevements—Remember it is not war— only a game.St.Patrick's will practice this
