MR.SMITH AND DR.FAUCHER.To resent the high-handed work of the Gouin Government in overriding the wishes of the clectors in Quebec West and Quebec Centre by imposing candidates who were not the choice of the people a large number of prominent Liberals are giving their support to Dr.Faucher and Mr.Charles Smith. In this number are included a good many has-been, would-be candidates snd they are bringing over many of their friends with them. They affirm that they will never vote Li ibezal again ag ng ag thé Present clique is at the head of the Liberal Government.Another large section of the elez- tors have recognized with gratitude what the Conservative Government at Ottawa has done and is still doing for the Port of Quebec (more than Sir Wilfrid Laurier did in his entire regime) and in consequence will testify their appreciation by supporting the Conservatives in the present election. There is a strong feeling among Liberals that Mr.Arthur Fitzpatrick and Dr.Bedard should have got the support of their parties.Dorchester County. In Dorchester County Mr.!.E.Barnard is meeting with more and more success as the campaign gnes on.He is holding meetings every day and his youthful opponent is beginning to show the effects of the arduous campaign. On Sunday last meetings were held at Ste.Germaine and Ste.Justine, at each of which more than two thousand electors heard the candidates. It did not take long for Mr.Barnard to win over the crowd with his free and eloquent style of speaking, his knowledge of farming and the requirements of the farming classes. His opponent made a sorry showing when attempting to prove that the Gouin Government was doing anything practical to help the agricultural interests of the Province. On Monday meetings were held at St.Rose and Si.Louis: on Tuesday at St.Prosper and on Wednesday at ft.Benjamin.It is now only a question of how large the majority of Mr.Barnard «ill be on election day.In Montmorency Mr.Aime Dion, a'though late in the field, is making a strenuous fight and there is no doulit but that the opposition of so many Liberals to the Quebec-Saguenay Railway will help him considerably.STR.ENNISBROOK STILL HARD Lieut.-Col.Sir William Price, officer commanding 171st Battalibn, C.EF, arrived home yesterday, after seeing the recruiting party of his battalion starting on their “hike.” : He reports the generous way in which the mayors and lez ding citizens of Richmond and Danville received the party and the assistance they gave. Both places have answered the “call” in a magnificent manner, —it is doubtful if any place in Canada can beat their record—and the 171st Battalion are to have their quota from these towns, Splendid meetings were held and Mrs.Moore and Miss Daphne Gibsone rendered songs to an appreciative audience. These ladies are certainly doing their share in helping Quebec's battalion in recruiting. At Richmond the pipers gave a selection of Scottish airs, and the Mayor, Mr.Hudon, Dr.Hayes, Lt.-Col.Talbot and Lt.-Col.Sir William Price gave recruiting speeches. At Danville the Mayor.Mr.Mc- Cracken, and the Rev, Mr.Belford spoke, and the ladies of the party and Capt.N.E.Fletcher.sang.The following have recently enlisted in the 171st: Nelson Henry Roeve, Y.M.C.A, College, Springfield, U.S.A, Arthur Crook, Richmond.Que.F, William state of somnabulism, Mrs.J.W.Clendenes, a patinet at the General Hospital, this morning about 8 o'clock walked out of à window on the second floor of the surgical ward, falling to the ground below, and dying a few hours later from the shock and injuries.Mrs.Clendenes, who was forty- three years of uge and came from Camboro, near London, Ont, had been in the hospital about ten days.short distance from the head of the Gaif of Triest, the Austrians are vigorously on the offensive against the Italians. In Tyrol to the scuth of Trent heavy infantry attacks to the east of the Adige river have forced the Italiens again, to abandon some of their advanced positions and resulted in the capture by the Austrians of an aggregate of 141 officers and 6,900 men.In addition 13 guns and seventeen mnchine guns were captured.Vienna says that south of Rovereto the Austrians stormed Zegnatorta, but Rome asserts that the five attacks launched here were put down with heavy casualties, the bodies of numerous dead Austrians floating away in the swift current of the Adige river. The repulse of another Austrian attack in the Sugana valley is alto revorted by Rome.Along the remainder of the front there were heavy artillery bombardments, with here and thers infantry attacks.Bombing operations by aviators of both sides have taken place against opposing positions. On the line in France and Belgium the fighting has consisted mainly of artillery duels-most severe to the north-west of Verdun. The Entente Allied airmen have Leen particularly active against German positions and in combats in the air with German fliers. In these latter combats several German aircraft were brought down by British and French avistors. In one of the raids American aviators fighting with the French army under the title of the Franco American Flying Corps took part in their first foray ss an individual ‘unit.+ Fights of minor importance, with the advantage in favor of the Ruse sians, have taken place on the northern end of the Russian front. In Asiatic Turkey around Diarbekr the Turks again assumed the off:nsive against the Russians, but again met with a repulse. The Framch are showing activity along the Lake Doiran and other srctora of the Serbe-Oreek frontier, having occupied Devetepe and pushed their forces eastward toward Monastir.Therinfantry of both sides slong this front continue to meke preparations for possible encounters.Of three Americans on board the Dutch steamer Batavier V., which was sunk by an explosion in the North 8ea, one was drowned. One of the Americans expresses the belief that the steamer struck a mine.BRITISH MONITOR DESTROYED.London, May 17—A British official communication issued this evening admits the loss of a small monitor as the result of the fire of Turkish batteries. The monitor was reported as having been set on fire and sunk in a Turkish official statement Tuesday. The British Admiralty denied the statement, but says later advices confirm the Turkish report. The British statement says: ‘A delayed telegram received from Vice-Admiral De Robeck states that on the night of May 12-14 one of our small monitors, the M-30, commanded by Lisut-Commander KE.L.B.Lockyer, was struck by the enemy's artillery, and, taking firs, was subsequently destroyed. Two men were killed and two wounded.“This information appeared in the Turkish communication yesterday and was officially denied, as other messages had been received from the Vice-Admiral two days after the occurrence. As a result of further inquiry it was found that a message reporting the loss had miscarried.” The Turkish communication of Tuesday said: “An enemy monitor which attempted to enter a harbor north-west of the island of Kesten came under the surprise fire of our artillery, burst into flames and foundered.8everal explosions were heard.” GERMANS WANT FOOD Geneva, via Paris, May 17—German soldiers along the Bwiss-Alsatian front, chiefly elderly ncn of the Landsturm, have begun to ask food from the Swiss soldiers.Tlie Germans say they have not eaten meat for weeks.Five German soldiers in uniform, although fired upon, escaped across the Swiss frontier at Rodgrsdorf, near Basel, yesterday. They were interned at Berne. The Neue Stuttga:ter Zeitung says the food situation in Rhine towns is becoming intolerable. The newspaper advises the government to take drastic measures to change the mode of living of the people.[It suggests that cooking in private families be prohibited and that the population be ordered to eat in common at restaurants, where meat would be served once daily, at noon, and only vegetables in the evening.Righteen German cattle dealers arrived in Basel yesterday hoping to buy cattle, which are becoming scarce.HUM TORPEDO BOAT SUNK.Copenhagen, via London, May 16—A German torpedo boat has been eunk by à German mine off Falsterbo, Sweden, according to the Berlingake Tidende’s Malmo and an idea of what the Empire is doing to safeguard the rights of humanity against a policy of military aggression may be secured by witnessing the magnificent series of moving pictures entitled “Britain Prepared” which will be shown at the Auditorium.commencing today with a representation : in the afternoon and another in the evening and closing Saturday even- .ing.These views were presented in Fngland under the patronage af the ; King and Queen and were shown in under the patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught.Comments were so favourable everywhere they were shown, that there is no doubt that à full house will greet’ the first evening of the full two hours show of vital interest to the country.F.ngland is sending trained soldiers to the front. The pictures show the preparatory work which the men must master before they enter the trenches.Real practical experience in trench-work is given them and the training camps in England seen to be surrounded with trenches, real trenches, communications, trenches, dug-outs.barbed-wire entanglements, ete, In fact, to look at some of the i views one would imagine that the men were actually on the firing line so minutely are the details looked after. The every-day man reads the paper and remarks that some trenches are taken.Trenches are to him something thatconceals a soldier from the enemy but he knows little else about them and reading a description in the paper sometimes causes him to imagine something entirely different. But the pictures show him the real article.how the men fire from them, how they handle grenades and bombs machine guns, catapults, trench mortars and their methods of communication with the various units.Tt is very interesting to young and old.To the young man who contemplates entisting, the work is made clear and he may see for himself, other young men of Britain who with smiling countenances are digginst trenches and living in the open air cager to help their country in the big fight.Monster reviews are shown, attended by His Majesty King George and other well-known men in England and one cannot watch the forest of glistening bayonets attached to the guns of men, who natural thing (in these Jays especially) for people to stand while the National Anthem of any of the Allies is being played?I was surprised to notice how very few stood while the Marseillaise was being played by Creatore’s Band at the Saturday matinee, though the audience was largely composed of the French people.Yours truly, AN ENQUIRER, OFFICIOUS SENTRIES.17th May, 1916.Mr.Editor: The incident mentioned by your correspondent “Civic” in your issue of today, under the heading of “Officious Sentry,” is not an isolated one, as on an occasion some time ago a similar action was performed by an untutored sentry on a post on McMahon street, and which led to the party being seriously frightened at whom the sentry's bayonet was pointed. Is all this blamable to the non-commissioned officer ur officers of the guard being unacquainted with their duty or is it the fault of those responsible for the selecting of trained and capable soldiers? However, this description of sentry, and his likes are required in the trenches and the quicker: the military authorities pick out these and pack them off to France: the safer will the public in Quebec be.The military authorities should issue such orders, and see that they are carried out, to prevent the recurrence of such senseless actions by irresponsible sentries on such- publie thoroughfares as St.Louis street, and such posts should be sentried by men with common sense and conversant with the English language as well as the French. If Quebec wants Amcrican tourists, business men and others to visit the city they shold have such soldiers doing duty on the public streets. The military are publicly paid cer- vante, and should not forget this, and the feast the public can ask in return is
