London papers have enjoyed three or four days of almost frenzied excitement, with demands and denunciations, often in language stronger than the dignity of British politics has permitted in the memory of the present generation.The crucial events in Rumania and Greece have been given à secondary place, except as they were used as a basis for attacks on the Ministers.“The strong man wins” Dec.5—A Foreign Office despatch recsived tonight from Athens by the Greek legation here says normal conditions have been restored in the capital.It describes the fighting between the Veniselists and reservists incident to the clash between Greek and Allied troops Saturday as an attempted insurrection by rowdies who were quickly suppressed.A paraphrase of the despatch given out by the legation follows: “Ag you have already been informed, rowdies attempted Saturday to take advantage of the deplorable encounters which occurred between the detachments of the Allies and the Gresk troops to create a sudden insurrection.They killed and injured several civilians and military men.“The government took immediately the necessary steps and order was completely re-established.The capital now has its normal aspect.1 am informed, however, that several press cablegrams have described the repression of the broils in the most whimsical manner.“No tebellion has been checked with more rapidity.If any excesses have been committed, they must be imputed to the madness of the moment and to the exasperation dus to seeing painful firing which cost blood of the army, and to a sedition which had been promoted agiinet civilians and military men, and which had been prepared long ago and kept quiet.“Nevertheless the royal government will not fail to make an effort to show their severity against any person accused of having committed criminal acts.” A report from Minister Droppers at Athens, reaching the State Des partment today, said there was much excitement in the Greek capital, but gave few particulars about the situation.Ic was the first time the Minister had been heard from in weeks.TROUBLE IN DUMA.Londen, Dee.B—Michasl Rodsisnko, President of the afternoon and urged the ier to establish (ull prohibition sll over the province of Quebec and suspend at once all licences for the duration of the war.After several petitions signed by numerous members of varieus temperance and other societies of Montreal and neighborhood had been read and presented to him, Sir Lomen alter remarking that his Gevernment had already done à great deal for temperance promisté he woulé put a the suggestions that had been wade to him before his colleagues and would give ta the solution of the sll important question the best of his heart and intelligence.Mrs.Walter Paul, who presented the delegation to the Prime Ministerremarked shat the delegation largely represented the vote of the womn cf | Montreal and district, societies of ait kind who fully realized the great importance of temperance and prohibition during the present difficult times.Mrs.Mayburn then presented the petition to Sir Lomer after it had been read in both English and French and another petision by the Protestant Female School Tcach-re of Montreal was also placed before the Premier.Miss Reid, speaking for the Pa:- riotic Fund of Montrealwhat was being done specially to promote temperance amongst the relatives of soldiers and amongst the returned soldiers themselves, remarking the question was a vital one for the Fund workers.She stated there were 490 families in Montreal who wcre receiving assistance and were known to be more or less addicted to alcoholism.She described some fearful scenes witnessed by visitors belonging to the Red Cross Fund and emphasized the fact that immorality was closely connected with the use of strong drink.Returned soldiers | were treated too well by their friends and were tempted to make use and even abuse of drink on their return.She made a strong appeal for legislation in favor of protibition.Mrs.Trenholm, who represented the Soldiers Wives League, spoke of the terrible ravages done by drink and asked that the soldiers wives and children be protected by special measures during the war.Speeches were also made by rep- rescntatives of the Khaki League and the Irish Temperance Society.Mrs.Professor Derrick took up the question from an economic point of view.She remmrked that a large quantity of raw material was used fn the manufacture of liquor which could be put to a much better use.and this she said would represent real true economy.She asked that sll licences be suspended at least during the duration of the war.Mrs.Papadapoulos who represent ed the Council of Women.said the measure was a real war measure.Even a nu nber of women who were not themselves teetotalers had declar ed themselves in favor of prohibition | legislation.She also insisted upon the close connection between drink.immorality and social diseases.cal! came from the trenches for more men and the hospitals were full of men who through drink were unable to answer that call.Mrs.Scott stated that if they bad waited uniil the end of the week they could have bronght 1,100 women.Ail those present had paid their own expenses.She paid a few compliments to the Government of Sir Lomer.If the prohibition legislation might J mean some loss of revenue, which the , women did not admit.she hoped tha: the Government who knew so weil _ how to husband its resources would © not refuse to put its hand in fs pocket for such a good cause.Sir Lomer Gouin, after reading the petition which had been presented to him, remarked that since 1908 similar requests had been made to the Government.Himself and his colleagues had tried to meet the demands of the people.The Government had always attempted to do what was asked by the people of Quebec and he himself had been one of the first Premiers in this country to apenly state he was a friend of temperance.Every year all that was possible had heen done; ficences had been reduced in a number of places and the Premier and his culleagues were happy to see that à large number of municipalities had taken advantage of the law allowing them to appesl to the people in favor of prohibition.Under the present circumstances there was a great move in favor of temperance and prohibition.Several delegations have - asked for prohibition not only for the deration of the wag but for all times.Some of them have mentioned that "there could be no prohibition without “8 referendum and other had claimed prohibition would have to be accom- nied by compensation which would Mvoive thousands and perhops mil- Hons of dollars.Some of them had mid they did not want a referendum and that if prohibition was not grant- od the Premier and his friends were not the friends of the people.The Prime Minister said thut oH those demands had to be carefully considered, + it was a question which did Knight, third; Woodlawn Villager, owned by T.Martin, of Bellevue, fourth; Royal Silver, owned by Mr.Hill, of Northcote, fifth, In the ten placings ther wer no fess than five white bulls.Durnbrat that if it were not for the brave sailors who have passed two winters North Sea, and the brave soldiers homes for more than two years, facing death in the cold and muddy trenches, many, alas, never tc return, our [INDIGNATION MEETING ON ~ WARD REDISTRIBUTION — RALLY IN BERTHELOT HALL TONIGHT TO PROTEST AGAINST S8IX-WARD DIVISION DECIDED BY THE PRIVATE BILLS COMMITTEE.| the whole situation to their electors.Other aldermen who are in favor oi the eightward divisiop wil also attend as well as members of the Legis lature and a large number of taxpayers who want the decision of the City Council, which was carried ou® according to the dictates of the Legislature, respected as it should be.- Some important declarations will be made at this meeting and some challenges will be issued.—Advt.have had the experience of fire and sword of poor Belgium.It is not only the French rursl population that is thus indiferent.There ie a large English-speaking parish in this dictrict, which, I am told.has not sent one soldier tq the front.Surely there must be some means of bringing our agricultural classes to a sense of their duty.If we do not make a supreme effort now, when the war is, it is to be hoped, drawing to a close, the result is going to be a loss of the prestige of the Province, when the war is over.Because we may be sure that the West, with its rapidly increasing representation in Parliament, will not hesitate to tell us, when the victory is won, that we did net do our share.Surely we cannot turn a deaf car to the cry for help, which comes to us from our comrades in the trenches, the heroes of Ypres and of Courcelette, nor disregard the appeal and the example of the representatives «f the old historic families o! the Province, who are fighting in Flanders, not for conquest nor for aggression, but only to maintain for us the peace and happiness and self-government we have so long enjoyed.If we do, we may sadly fold away the proud escutcheon of the .Province—Je me souviens—for we shall no longer be worthy of it.Yours truly, QUEBEC.— CHALLENGES MRS.: REFORD'S STATEMENTS.Quebec, December 4th, 1933.To the Editor of the Chronicle: Dear Sir —Some time ago Mrs.R.W.Reford gave a lecture before the Women's Canadian Club about the war.The decture wae certainly interesting; unfortunately, Mrs.Reford made remarks, most sulting, for the Province of Quebec and the French Canadians.If the tecturer had been à man, I would have protested at once; but being a woman, and being myself only a guest of the Ciub, I said nothing; the lecture over.knowing Mrs.Reford, I went to congratulate her on the greatest part of her lecture; .but said that her remarks about Quabec and the French-Canadians in particu lar were wrong and surely made on false information.Mrs.Reford answered me.that she was ready to prove what she said, though so far no proofs have come.A few days after, a remarkable article was published in “Le Presse”, proving, as 1 knew it, the very contrary of Mre Reford's cemarks.1 immediately sent her that article, and :he enclosed tet- ters were exchanged.I will ask you to be kind enough to publish them, and accept my best thanks in advance.Yours truly, P.AUG.CHOQUETTE.Quebec, 28th November, 1916.Mrs.R.W.Reford, 300 Drummond St, Montreal, , Dear Madam,~Pardon me for sending you the enclosed article of “La Presse” in answer to your remarks about supposed Quebec slackers.I admit that these remarks were made in good faith, but on misinformations, as I took the liberty of telling you after your vety eloquent and interesting lecture.You will please remark that the oumber of recruits therein mentioned are taken from the “Mail” and other Toronto papers.I hope after perusing these calcula- Doctor Tells How À Free You Can Have Milled Use at Home.Philadelphia, Pa.—Do you wear glasses?Are you a vieum of eye strain or other eye weakness?If so, ou will be glad to knew that accord- ng to Dr.Lewis there is real ho for you.Many whose eyes were failing say they have had their eyes restored through the principle of this wonderful free prescriptivn.One man ar after trying it: “I was almost blind;
