Presse Publishing Company Limited, consisting ef 7,600 shares, was sold by the President and General Manager, Arthur Berthiaume, to his brothers, Eugene and Edouard and to Edmond Mwntet, the latter who at once transferred back to Arthur his proportion on the sale, 2,500 ghares, was brought out in evidence today ba- fore the Superior Court during the hearing of the family which turns on the ownership of this, the most important French Canadian newspaper in Canada. This transaction having been made without the knowledge or consent of the truetees or those for whom they administered the shares.Arthur insisted that the sale was “radically null”.He declarsd that his brother.Eugene was constantly scheming for combinations was so quarrelsome and overbearing that for peace and harmony, he.Arthur professed to agree to petition for special leginlation in order to ‘get rid of the trustees named by his late father, and so make La Presse newspaper à thres-brother Company.Arthur Berthlaumes examination had not concluded when the court adjourned till to-morrow.It is ez- pected the case will last four days.Afternoon Session - Montreal, Juiy 21—Arthur Berthlaume, President and General Manager of La Presse Publishing Company, was today subjected to & grilling examination by N.M.Laflamme, K.C.at the opening of the hearing on the motion presented on behalf of Bdouard and Eugene Berthiaume for an injunction against further dispossession of their atle- ged rights and privileges as directors of the company, as sst forth in the motion presented last Tuesday.Damages of $50.000 are also asked for actions taken by the defendants Arthur : Berthiaume, Zenon Tontaine and Parmphile Du Tremblay, when the petitioners were, it is alleged, deposed from the Board of Directors.Mr.Justice Loranger, before whom the hearing is taking .place, when the case was called today asked if a settlement could not be reached out of court, remarking that It this wers possible it should be done, but a negative reply being given, it was decided to start the argument on the patition presented by Eugene and Jdouard against their brother Arthur Berthiaume.“ ‘The latter took the stand and admitted traneferring two stock cer- itficates of five shares esch from his brothers to two other parties without any fmancial remuneration. He added that he thought pretective tariff bill, estimated by chalrman Fordney to raise a round five hundred million dollars in revenue annually, was passed tonight by the House, by & vote of 28% te 127, precisely the vote by which a dsmoeratic motion for elimination of its United Otates valuation provision was defeated Seven Republicans veted against the measure, while the same number of Democrats supported it.Ofls, hides, cotton and asphalt stood up against a determined fight to tax them and remained on the free list. The Longworth Dye embargo, first of the five contested schedules to go before the House proper for a separate vote, and backed by most of the Republican members of the” ways and means committees was thrown out, 208 to 193.There was not much chance of imposing a duty on hides and eotton after the House in.committee of the whole, had defeated amendments carrying co nsatory rates on their manufactured products. When the oil amendment was reached thers was sueh a shout of “noes” that a roll call was not demanded.A moment later Chalrman Fardney, trying to make himself heard above the din which prevailed during the three hours of voting, announced that forces in line, compsiled a record vote.Just before the roll call to pass the bill Representative Gardiner of Texas, ranking Demoerat on the Ways and Means Committee, stepped to the front, with the sxpected motion to send the bill back to its framers with instructions to strike out the United States valuation and reciprocal provisions: - This - -was where the Republicans and Demoerats divided squarely on the whole tari fgsue, although they had apiit widely on some 6f the earlier votes. It prebably was the first time since war days that the House found itself with such a quorum on the eve of a vote.Closing the long wrangle over the bill, Chairman Fordney brought Republican members of ‘their feet by declaring it would bring greater prosperity to the country than it now enjoyed. The veteran tariff maker, thrilled by the demonstration, smiled arid bowed and’ then wheeled about to wave to the gal- feries.STRAIGHTEN ALBERTA’S POLITICAL SITUATION Farmers-Eleot Will Meet In demonstrated today oft the Virginia Capes.United States army bombers, launching projectiles weighing one ton, sank the former German battleship Ostfriesland, a 23,000 ton, heavily armored ship, In szactly twenty five minutes after they opened thelr attack at 13:10 p.m., from an altitude of approximately 1708 fest.Twe bombs, which landed overboard within a few yards of the port quarter, gave the rhip her deathblows. Thus the end came to & once great ship of the German navy, which took an important part with the German first battle squadron in the battle of Jutland and reached home safely after having struck & mine laid by the attacking British Grand Fleet.Naval men and many others of the thousands assembled on halt a score of war craft viewed the end of the big ship almost in awe but the army men, and particularly the aviators, were highly elated. Many of them regarded this as proof of the claim of Brigadier General Mitchell, Assistant Chief of the United States Army Air Bervice that the airship was making the battleship obsolete.Major General Charles F.Mencher, Chief of the Army Air Service, declared that he did not think the sinking of the Ostfriesland showed that the battleship was doomed but that it did show that the serial bomb constituted a real menace to capital ships which must be met.The sinking of Ostfriesland waa the concluding incident in a month's joint bombing test by United States army and navy aviators.SEVENTY FIVE SPECIAL OFFICERS ARE SWORN IN At Cobalt, N.Y., Following Attack On Strike-Breakers’ Train By Strikers Cointh, N.Y, July 21—S8eventy-
