Not only did they give me à pile of straw for a hed in the dormitory up- the work of the "Sappers,” in the Great War, one cannot speak too highly.Hrave and efficien they were always working and co-operating enthusiastically with the infantry.Every week now that passed was deepening that sense of comradenhip which gound our force together. The mean people, the men whan cither heing weeded out or taught that there was no place for selfish.nem in the army. One great iss.son wan impressed upon me in the war and that Je, how wonderfully “fruity” taste of their abolition.A mam his wild fandies free, and gives to his anger and selfishness, is go! to become the viethn of his own It people at home could only be prevented, as were men in the war, from eying all the bitter and angry things they feel, and from criticising the actions of their neighbors, a different temper of thought would prevail. The comradeship men experienced “in the Great War was due to the fact that everyone knew comradeship was ¢s- sential to our happinas and success. It would be well if all over Canada men realised that the same is true of our happiness and success in times of peace. What might we not accomplish if our national and industrial lite were full of mutual sympathy and love! Our rest at Bteonje was not of long duration.Further South another attack was to be made, and so one evening, going in the direction whither our troops were ordered, I was motored to the little village of Robecq. There I managed to get a comfortable billet fer my- seif in the house of à oarpenter. My bedroom was a tiny compartment which looked out on the backyard. It was quite delightful to lie in a real bed again, and as I was enjoying the luxury late in the morning I watohed the carpenter making a baby's coffin.Robecq then was a very charming place. The canal, on which was & hospital barge, gave the men an opportunity for a swim, and the spring alr and the sunshine put them in high spirit A Word With Haig It was at Robecq, that I had my frst sight of General Hels.I was standing in the Equare one afternoon when I saw the men on the opposite side spring suddenly to attention.1 felt that something was going to happen. To my astonishment, I saw & man ride up carrying « flag on à lance. He was followed hy severa) other mounted men.It was so like a pageant that I sald to mywelf, “Hello, here comes Joan of Arc.” Then a General appeared (with hie drilllant staff. The Genera! ndvanced and we ali saluted, but he, spying my cheplain’s collar, rode over to me.and shook hands and asked it I had come over with the Canudians.I told him I had. Then he said, “I am wo glad you have all rome into my Army.” I did not know who he was or what army we were in, or in fact what the phrases meant, but I thought it was wise to say nice things to à general, so I told him we were all very glad too.He seemed much gratified and rode off in all the pomp and cireum- stance of war.I heard atferwands that he was Genera! take measures that lquors sent to buyers in localities where there are no liquor stores, be shipped at the exporse of the Cominiasion, snd that thers be uniformity of price througn out the Province.Hon.Jacob Nicol, Provincial Treasurer, replied to the Member for ! eauce, and then Mr.Arthur Sauve, Leador of the Opposition, tock a hand in the debate and way followed dy Premier ‘Taechereau.Mr.Nicol said that the Government had taken note of the remarks of the Qjomber for Benuce and there was :eason to believe that the LIquor Commission would reinedy the matter and that people in rural districts would ge: liquor at the same price as the city people.Mr.Bauve spoke of the high prices of liquor and said that the traffic.had brought the Government a pro- At of four million dollars in eight months. It was said when the law was brought in that it was ‘riended to give the people of the Province of Quebec good liquor at a mad price. It was time that a stop be put to exploiting the public.Since ihe liquor Commission had taken contril the prices had gone up and even since the new Government hal taken control at Ottawa there had Leen another increase.Premier Tascheresu said that If ihe suggestion of the Memnher for Reauce was at all feasible it would be given effect.3le sald that the Liquor Act could really be called temperance legislation and this was proved by the smaller number of arrests made under the new regime The system was so good that the eyes of all the other Provinces were lon Quebec and he believed that they would eventually follow the example of Quebec.Even in the United States it was said that Quebec had an Weal law.He said that the sale of alcohol brought a profit of from 18 percent to 20 percent and the tour million doliars’ profit mentioned by the Leader of the Opposition was not for eight montha but for the year. The very day that he law had rome into effect the friends of the Leader of the Opposition at Ottawa had doubled the tax. That duty was fixed by Statute. That accounted for the higher prices and the recent increases were due to the rate of exchange as both English and French monies were steadily increasing in value.Mr.Amedes Monet, Liberal AMem- ber for Naplerville, said that whan the bill was put through at the last session he had argued in favor of liquor stores in villages as well as In cities and towns and he was still of the same opimion. It was only in that way that satisfaction would be given to everyone. The debate was closed by Dr.J.8.Gregoire, Member for Frontenac, who spoke in approval of the law.SPIRITED FIGHT WITH REVOLVERS Detectives Raided Canadian Rum-Running Gang In New York New York, March 10—Two young women and two men, sald by police to be members of Canadian Drill Hall THE QUEBEC CHRONICLE‘ Year Mr.H.8.Pritchard, Sales Manager of the Ford Motor Company of Canada, Ltd.in an interview regarding the activities of his company in Canada, and the prospects for the sales of the Ford car for the year 1922, said; “If everybody in the automobile industry ia half as busy as the Ford Company of Canada, the prospects for 1923 are indeed bright.” Continuing, he said: “i believe 1922 is going to see & general revival of industry. It wom't be a year of inflated prices or a boom year, although some people may get tooled into thinking so ns matters improve. But it is going to bua good year for every hard worker whose business is welP organized and reasonably flianced. And If it is a yea.of normal prosperity for industry in genera), that well-being is going to be reflected by the automoblle industry. As for the Ford Motor Company of Canada, it le going to be more than a good year—it Is going to be a Ford year with a big PF.“I have strong reasons for my optimtem as regards our own Company. They are these:— ‘’The Ford car is in an entirety different position from any other car on the market. It has come out of the mere car stage into being à pub- lle utility.People have to buy Ford cars just the same as cities must have street ratiways. In a certain sense we are not selling cars and trucks at all but are selling cheap transportation.“We have the lowest-priced cars and trucks on the market but we have a great deal more.We have such a widespread organisation ren dering service that even If a cheaper car was to endeavor to displace us it would fall to do so.“Then on account of the tremendous demand for our products we can afford to give the public more for their money than anybody else could attempt to do.“At the same time, although we are really outside the bounds of competition, we have to acknowledge that even 1922 is going to see a buyer's market There won't be any sales made over the counter even by Ford dealers. We shall have to go out and preach the gospel of cheap transportation all over Canada.“We have to show the farmer and the business man and the commercial house that although money is still tight they cannot afford to nex- lect motorization. To motorize their business is to cut down costs and to foster expansion.“The farmer who is getting low prices for his produce must grow more in order to maintain his income.Time will not permit him to produce more with horse-power but the tractor will let him put in a bigger acreage In shorter time or enable him to improve the cultivation and increase the yield of his| present acreage. The truck will en-; able him to reach better markets and to save time, labor and cost in transportation.“The tarmer of 1922 cannot afford to be without a truck and a tractor but as he has not the money to expend on high-priced machines he will buy the most efficient automotive equipment possible compatible with the money available. That means that most of the farmers are going to buy Ford trucks and Fordson tractors.“And it Is just the same with urban business. The salesman to make the same money as he did in 1919 has to cover more ground in 1922.That means he will have to take to the automobile to carry him on his rounds. In nine cases out of ten his car is going to be a Ford."Take a walk from this building in any direction and count how many Ford cars, trucks, vans and light delivery wagons you meet. Now try and carry your mind back five yearn to remeber how many Ford vehicles you would have meen in the same streets in 1917.You will find proof enough that this is not only an automobile age but a Ford age, and ins ingly so.«f922 is the year for low-priced cars, trucks and tractors. That means Ford cars, trucks and tractors.“Follow me a little further.Canada isa about at the end of present railway expansion. The burden of the railway is already about as much as the people can bear in consumption taxes. The great demand is for a larger population to develop industry, to diminish the per capita load of taxes, to settle and open up new areas. Now it is no use get- ing in this extra population without something to offer them and that something has to be gond ronds.“1 venture to predict that in a few years from now Canada will be grid- ironed with ‘excellent highways carrying hundreds of thousands of cars and trucks. There will be less independence on railways and more and more dependence on Rood roads.“As an instance let me tell you that a farmer recently ment in a ter- timonisi saying that with a Ford one-ton truck he waa able to make two round trips a day of 60 miles each, carrying a load approximate 4,000 pounds at cach trip. That war over ordinary dirt roade. If he had lived on a paved road he could have: done both trip in à day with cape! and had time over for work on the farm. That means that a farmer who Is a truck owner can live from 86 to 30 miles from a market and haul twice the amount of produce twice as quickly as à farmer with a team who is living ten miles out of town.“More Fords inevitably mean more highways, for the Ford car and the Ford truck are the ideals for the settler.“But don't Imagine this Company Is just going to sit back snd let economic conditions do their work, for them.“At this very moment the Ford Motor Company is launching.the mere | — | WHAT THE "TIN LIZZIE MEAN FOR THE DOMINION Sales Manager Of Canadian Company Gives Out Very should not be a home in Canada which has not heard the Ford mes- mage.Returns from Winnipeg, where this system Was first inauz- urated, show results which astound even its opponents “I'll tell you why I know this cooperative movement of all dealers will prove à success Our recent closed car campaign proved it to me, This campaign, which was launched by the llome Office in Beptember, was productive of nearly a 40% increase ju the sale of Ford closed models for the present winter over the previous winter, yet 1920 is considered to have been a year of depression, “Another reason why | am optimistic about Ford business for the current year is that every dealer and salesman in the organization seems sold on his job. There is a genuine enthusiasm for the products they sell which extends beyond a mere desire for profits and commission.Never was the Ford organization more healthy at heart, and it is an axiom of business that if the dealers are sold the public is sold also—of course, in the pleasanter sense of the word ‘sold.’ “We expect to be of great service to municipalities this year.Ford fire trucks.ate proving to be a great success. In sprinklers, etc., and many firms are now buliding garbage dump bodies specially for the Ford truck.“We are expecting to see considerable revival In building this spring. This will mean a big
