her brolher, Samuel Kissam, and several nephews and nieces. All the testatrix's jewelry, diamonds and other precious stones, aces and other personal effects, are left to where, as has been said, he was picked up by The Recent U- S- Elections.A prominent city banker, who did not desire his name to be used, summed up the situation as follows :—“During a period of great depression, and when there is considerable doubt regarding the business outlook, people do not buy new stocks. They sell out whatever stocks they have, down to the very last item.If bnsiness shows an improvement, the tendency is to purchase stocks sufficient to last for four, or five, or six months. The lumber trade, for example, exhibits a very decided improvement. It began even before the date of the Presidential election, and when people were reasonably sure that Mr.McKinley would be elected. The lumber yards in the Eastern States, which formerly were bare of stocks, are now rapidly filling up.They take ^ good deal of our high-class lumber.Out West dollar wheat is causing the farmers to make improvements on their farms. This leads to a demand for our coarse grades of lumber.I certainly look for better times. Our interests are largely identified with those of the United States. If depression overtakes the Kepublic we are sure to feel it at a later period.hen prosperity returns we also feel the benefit of good times, but not unlit after they do.We are a small nation and supply the United States very largely. With the United States and England prosperous wo arc bound to bo prosperous also.”—Mail aud Kmjnrc, More Curative Power I* contained in a bottle of Hood’s Sarsaparilla than in any other similar preparation. It costs tli« proprietor and manufacturer more.It costs the jobber more and it is worth more to the consumer. It has a record of euros unknown to any other preparation. It is the b?st to buy because it is th« One True Blood Purifier.Hood’s Pills are the best family cathartic and liver medicine.Gentle, reliable, sure.; MISREPRESENTATION.If falsehood and misrepresentation could defeat a Government, then the administration of Hon.Mr.Flynn would have become defunct almost before it was bom.Lacking other weapons of warfare the Opposition newspapers have assailed it upon all sides without the slightest regard for the truth.First it was said that the Ministers dreaded to face the House and would spring a surprise upon the country by bringing on the general elections prior to the session. This story was repeated over and over again despite the reiterated denials of the Chronicle. So that there was not even the excuse for claiming to be under a false impression in persisting in the statement. The public can now see for themselves how utterly false was the charge. The explosion of this story was followed by another, equally absurd, to the efiect that there was discord in the Cabinet and that certain Ministers were upon the point of retiring. On the contrary, it is perfectly plain to all who will see, that the very best of harmony prevails between the members of the Government. But last night’s L’tlecteur caps the climax by announcing with sensational headlines and in the course of a double-leaded editorial article, that there is a new crisis hero and that very strained relations exist between the Lieutenant-Governor and his Ministers.Referring to the illness of His Honor the Lieutenant-Governor, L'Electeur declares that there is nothing in it, and that the story has been •irculated tor the express purpose of con-•ealing from the public a grave difficulty that exists between theGovernment and the Lieutenant-Governor.We need hardly say that this statement is false in every particular.Sir Adolphe Chapleau Is not the man to hide himself under the veil of a pretended sickness. His Honor has, unfortunately, been quite ill with a severe attack of rheumatism for some days past and has been unable to come to town.He receives his Ministers at Spencer Wood and the very best understanding prevails amongst them. Now that this story is disposed of it would be interesting to know what the next one will be.HOW NEAR BRYAN CAME TO BEING ELECTED.The enormous popular plurality obtained by Mr.McKinley over the party of repudiation and national dishonesty in the late Presidential election has blinded many people to the narrow escape of being elected that Mr.Bryan really had ; for it is quite possible under the peculiarities of the American constitution and system of election for a man to receive a large plurality of the popular vote for President and still be defeated, as Mr.Tilden actually was some years ago.A correspondent of an American newsi>aper has just pointed out that .though Mr.McKinley’s plurality amounted to about a million of votes, yet it required a displacement of only 40,000 of these, in ten of the most closely contested States, to have given Bryan a majority of five in the Electoral College. As a matter of fact it would have required much less than thi«, for the correspondent in question credited McKinley with 292 electoral votes and Bryan only 155, which complete returns will show to be erroneous.Even accepting, however, as correct, the figures of this correspondent, and allowing McKinley both Tennessee and Wyoming, he will have a majority of 137.If 71 of these votes had fallen in the Bryan column, McKinley would have had 221 and Bryan 226, a majority of 5 for free stiver.Where eouldBRYANhavogotthe.se votes if the Providence that watches over elections had been on his side ?Bearing in mind that a majority of 5,000 is changed by the transfer of 3,000 votes into a majority of 1,000 for the opposing candidate, let us see what would have resulted from a few such changes in ten critical States : country if we are to judge by the attacks made upon him.It generally happens that the greatest number of stones and other missiles is found under the tree that yields the finest fruit. In the interests of economy it is sincerely to he hoped that Mr.Laurier will not see the leading article in last night’s L'Electeur. If he should, however, happen to read the article in question, it is equally to be hoped that he may not.be converted by its argument that all the legislation adopted by an incomplete Parliament is unconstitutional and null.It will he too bad indeed if the Premier finds it exporters in this Province, a certain amount of Quebec cheese has turned out very badly this year.Complaints have come from England and an investigation has shown that the trouble is due to the use of defective rennet.Fortunately for this part of the country none of the dieeso that turned out so badly was produced in the district of Quebec. It all came from the vicinity of St.Hyacinthe and from other parts of the Montreal district. The lesson is one, nevertheless, that nay be well taken to heart by manufacturers in this district. It is just as the Chronicle had tntici-pated in the matter of the story about the Hon.Mr.Dobell, which recently appeared in the Montreal Witness.Sir Donald A.Smith laughingly denies the report that he returns to Canada next nonth, and that Hon.R.R.Dobki.l will succeed him.He said:—"It is absolutely beyond my knowledge. There is really rothing more to say on the subject.” Sir Donald’s purchase of Glencoe and the fact that ho is now seeking a town residence, shiws his intention of remaining in London, though the Hudson’s Bay affairs and other business will probably necessitate visits to Canada on his part. There is an agitation in the columns of the Patrie for the abolition of the Legisla tive Council. Our contemporary says that less taxes would have been required if the Council had been abolished sooner. Then why did not Mr.Mercier abolish it as ho promised before his arrival at power, instead of aiding by further extravagance to necessitate the imposition of the taxes ?The Waterloo Advertiser says "When Mr.Marchand comes to power the Council must go.” Mr.Mergter’s friends said the same thing of him before he came to power, but the Council did not go.By the way the Advertiser has not said a word of late looking to the abolition of the Senate. The Montreal Herald declares that the difficulties standing in the way of an expeditious judgment of the Atlantic Steamship question arise mainly from the fact that in respect of certain phases of it, it seems almost, if not quite, impossible to obtain disinterested, and, therefore, reliable information. These difficulties might bo materially reduced, however, if Canadian public men and public newspapers would permit themselves to be governed rather by the line of policy followed out by the Ccnards and the other great steamship lines that have secured New York’s supremacy as a shipping port, than by the interested advice that those lines are prepared to tender upon a proposal to give them a successful Canadian opposition.Catarrh Means Danger, Because if unchecked it may lead directly to consumption.Catarrh is caused by impure blood. This fact is fully established. Therefore, it is useless to try to cure catarrh by outward applications or inhalants. The true way to cure catarrh is to purify the blood.Hood’s Sarsaparilla, the great blood purifier, cures catarrh by its power to drive out all impurities from the blood.Thousands of people testify that they have been perfectly and permanenlly cured of catarrh by Hood’s Sarsaparilla.WHERE) TO GO TO-MORROW.SPECIAL CHURCH SERVICES.y I CATHEDRAL OF THE HOLY TRINITY.24th Sunday interesting dresses of which a glimpse was promised me some time ago. They are, indeed, PRKSSKS WORTH NOTING, and furnish excellent specimens of many of the novelties for November.A very elegant dinner dress is made of pink moire de velours. The bolero waist is of white satin, hand embroidered in gold bullion and colored silks, and very richly trimmed with chiffon. The skirt is plain, new cut with demi train.A rich tailor-made dress is of shepherdess plaid, bolero waist, trimmed with ermine, with yoke of white moire and bertha of black velvet embroidered ; walking skirt very richly embroidered with black silk braid.Another very handsome tailor-made dress is of wine color covert coating, trimmed with watered silk and steel buttons. The walking skirt is plain, with box seams.Still another tailor-made dress is of tweed, with bolero waist, richly braided, new shape skirt braided to match.Velvet waists are very fashionable as an extra to wear with any skirt. One very pretty crimson one is trimmed with white silk and chiffon.Another in black is trimmed with white moire and cut jet.A black oue is trimmed with pink and green shot surah and cream lace.A handsome evening dress is of white satin embroidered with gold and trimmed with rich lace.A very beautiful dinner dress is of rich black silk, trimmed with chintilli net, cut jet, buttercup yellow Gismond chiffon and buckles of black satin ribbon.A reception dress is of black silk velvet with a rich collarette of yellow lace and bands of blue satin ribbon terminating in points and high belt of blue satin.A matinée of blue and white surah sucker silk has drawn sleeve with capes, trimmed with ohiffen and velvet.A visiting costume in green and grey shot silk and wool material has a Zouave waist with vest of white moire embroidered in pink and green and gold, with a new drawn sleeve and plain flowing skirt.Among the fashionable sleeves just now, «ne very pretty one is a drawn sleeve forming a bell at the wrist and a puff in the form of a butterfly at the shoulder.JACKETS AND MANTLES.Among the novelties in mantles are some very pretty wraps for evening wear made of plain cloth or fancy materials in different colors, lined in fur and made in the form of a jacket, with loose box pleats forming a yoke and falling gracefully to the foot of the garment. The sleeves are Bishop’s sleeves, and the garment for the most part trimmed with fur, (Thibet being the most fashionable at present). The circular cape is still holding its own.Dressy mantles are made of velvet plush and trimmed in fur and jet. Those made with a fur yoke are considered the most stylish.Cloth jackets are still worn. They are very short and the large sleeves are still bolding their own though fashion predicts small ones. , MILLINERY NOTES.Fashions in millinery are varied and original.Toqnes are inclined to take the place of large hats, especially now that the cold weather is coming on.A pretty model is of white or cream velvet with a turn up sailor brim bound in mink, a cluster of black plumes at the side of a full gathered crown. There is still the same inclination to make the heads of ladies resemble those of horned animals, for coque’s feathers and parading plamea are bath so placed that they curl from the centre of the forehead towards the sides like ram’s horns. The greatest pains and thought have been devoted to the tail feathers of the bird of Paradise, and they are now dyed to match any of the fashionable colors. The ¦ chenille embroidery worked on mohair net, on straw and willow and on velvet is greatly in demand. , A SUNDRIES. • White brocaded ribbon traced with floral paillettes is used for belts and waist trimmings.Alpaca petticoats with rufles of the same bound with satip of a contrasting color, are very pretty and much more durable than silk.Boleros of finely tucked silk in any color you choose are one of the features of dress, and black velvet boleros, covered with an applique of white satin leaves outlined with cord and steel, are made to wear with different bodices.A pretty front for a red cloth bodice is made of ecru lace insertion, held together by black velvet ribbon. The latest Parisian fashion of dressing tha hair shows the chignon quite high on the head, so much so, ii fact, that it entirely disappears beneath the crown of the hat.Waving the hair is as popular aa ever, and it is arranged so as to be very loose and fluffy about the face, and is held in place at the back with pretty curved combs. The pompadour front is worn, and can be made becoming to almost every face with a few curling locks to fall on the forehead. The new combination undergarments are very attractive with an extra belt of pink merino, which extends from the bust well below the waist. This gives warmth where it is needed, and the pink and white mixtnre is very pretty.THE 16 CLUB.I am asked by a correspondent, who is, I suppose, either a member or a friend of the Club, to say that the first of a series of euehre parties and At Homes of the Sixteen Club, will take place in the large dance hall over Roy’s drug store on Stanislas street on Monday next, the Cathedral system in the Diocese, he was appointed by the late Bishop Williams a Canon of the Quebec Cathedral. He was married in 1874 to Miss Mary Fuller, of Lennoxville, and it is an open secret that College, and is now a student at McGill.THE ANNOUNCEMENT OK HIS ELECTION.When the Prolocutor of the Synod announced the vote and declared Canon Thornloe elected Bishop of Algoma, the members sang the doxology and Dean Carmichael offered an earnest prayer, after which Bishop Sullivan and Archdeacon Llwyd were the first to con gratulate the Bishop-elect, who was formally Sresented to the Prolocutor by Archdeacon Ivans and Rev.J.A.Worrell.The Prolocutor, in solemn and feeling tones, addressing Canon Thornloe, said :—“As Prolocutor of this Synod, I beg to announce to you that after its solemn deliberations, led by the spirit of Heaven, and carried on with every manifestation of aiocerity, you have been elected to the vacant Diocese of Algoma as it* Bishop.I hope aud trust that the aame hand which led to your election may lead you to seek the responsibility of its acceptance, and, I need scarcely add, that the gracious influence of God may rest on you to-night and forever.” The Bishop-elect, who was deeply moyed, said, in reply :—“Mr.Prolocutor, my dear brethren of the clergy and laity—I am sure that you will feel with me that this U a cri tical moment in my life and in the history of the Church, not only in Algoma, but in the Dominion of Canada, and you will un derstand that it has not been possible for me to pass through the ordeal through which I have been passing this day without profoundly weighing the r ponsibility that might be laid upon me in the issue to which these proceedings might lead.I think you will understand me when I say, that, with all the pondering and all the lift ing up of my heart to Almighty God to enable me to see my duty if such an issue should result, I have been unable, owing to the overwhelming sense of my own shortcomings, physical, mental and spiritual, for the arduous and responsible position to which you have been, by the grace and guidance of Almighty God, led to elect me, to decide whether it was my duty or not to accept this position, and I therefore crave your indulgence to allow me a few hours to cousult with my own heart, with friends who know me better than 1 know myself, and, above all, with Him whose guidance we have been seeking, without whoee guidance it would be presumption on my part to seek to come to a decision.I beg for a few hours to enable me to realize what my duty really is, and I ask all of you to grant me your prayers for the guiding power of the Holy Spirit, thaï I may be led to avoid a decision which would be alike disastrous to myself and to the church.I thank you, air, for the kind words you have spoken, and I thank the Syuod for the kind way they have acted throughout the eleotiou, and especially at the announcement of its issue.” As will be seen by
