to-day’s Chronicle, our readers will see that the statements laid before the annual meeting of the shareholders of Molsons Bank were of a character highly satisfactory, both as to the operations of the year past and as to future promise. The net earnings of $209,-177 were practically 13 per cent, on the paid-up capital, which is $2,000,000.After distributing dividends of 9 per cent, thsre was added to the Rest a sum of $100,000, making that fund $1,600,000, or 75 per cent, of the capitil. This is an unusually large reserve. It makes the Bank’s position proportionately strong.Jt has been gained by years of careful management, which the remarks at the meeting show the shareholders know how to appreciate.Last year’s results were attained in face of considerable difficulties, for it is to be rer membered that the improvement in trade lately commented upon did not make itself felt soon enough to perceptibly effect the profits of the Bank up to the time the hc counts were closed. The Bank is also strong in other features of its financial statement, so that it is likely to profit to the full extent from the more active commercial demand for funds the early future is expected to produce. The branch of this Bank which it is intended to open here shortly, as first announced in these columns some time ago, will be a welcome addition to our local banking houses, in view of the decidedly high rank attained by the institution.EDITORIAL NOTE.A brilliant writer and traveller describes the city of Berlin in a series of sketches in one of the leading London papers, and this is how he concludes his notice “The Kaiser’s Capital is a queer jumble. But the queerest thing in it is technically out" side it—the Mausoleum at Charlottcnburg, wherein rest the bodies of Friedrich Wilhelm, the liberator of Germany from Napoleon, of the beautiful Queen Louise, who died of a broken heart for Germany, and of the first Kaiser and his consort The present Kaiser charges you twnpence-halfpenny to view the tombs of his ancestors. But that is not all.At the portal stands a cheap angel, with n gilt sword of flame, as if the Mausoleum were the Garden of Eden, or the Kaiser could call on the heavenly hosts to act as supernumerary policemen. And on the marble effigies of his fathers, of the men who built up this great and wonderful empire of Germany— the light can only fall through panes of cheap violet and yellow glass. It is said tq be intended to make the figures look more like real corpses. The holiest heroes of Prussia are haloed in the vulgar light o : a penny gaff.Berlin can be dazzling, but it can also be very tawdry. The Kaiser’ city is something of a parvenu among Capitals after all.” SPORTING NffiWS.THE PARRY SOUND ÏRAFFIC.The desire, which is attributed to Mr.Tarte, to build a circuitous line from Coteau to Laoole, St.Johns and St.Ilya cinthe, so as to give the Parry Sound traffic an outlet to the Intercolonial Railway, has naturally caused a great deal of anxiety in Quebec, where our leading capitalists are engaged in building a railway, now nearly completed, to bring this Parry Sound traffic to Quebec for shipment. But a little reflection will convince any buui ness man that these fears are, or should be, groundless. In the first place the contemplated South shore line would not only be much longer than the Grand Trunk, but it would naturally arouse the hosti'ity of that Company and of the cities of Montreal and Quebec, both of which it would give the go-by.In the second place it would take away the long expected trade from the Louise Docks, in which the Government has some three millions invested, and it would, of course, be a contradiction of the past policy of Parliament which has voted and paid large sums of money to give this Parry Sound trade an outlet to Quobep by the North shore of the St.Lawjre»c.e.Qntarip and the other Provinces would natui^ly&^ag*i98.t& change of policy involving an additional .Cfp^tal or interest expenditure for anothar line. But the most reassuring feature in the whole matter is the fact that the Premier represents the very constituency whose whole future is at stake in this question. And Sir Wilvriu Lw-’jUER has already expressed himself in very unmistakable language on this subject, at the banquet at the Chateau Frontenac in October last, grhen he said :—“Of all the Western produite that go by the lakes, all Western whaa£ .that comes from Minnesota and Dakota and other, States, all products from the West that! pass through the Sault Ste.Marie Canal and that are now going to Europe, 96 per cent are forwarded da Tonawanda, Buffalo or Oswego, to the seaboard at Boston or New York, and only 4 per cent comes to Montreal, and not 1 per cent roaches Qupb^p.Change this state of things, and mako the tst.J^awrcnce route a free one then the figures will be reversed, and 96 per cent of the Western trade will1 CÔfljè not only to Montreal, but also to Quebec, Montreal will be unable to take care of the Western trade, at that time ; the Mon tresl harbour will be insufficient, and th^ traffic from the West will overflow in the direction of Sorul, Three Rivers and Quebec. This is, gentlemen, the future of Queliec. It will take some years before the £j}nala of the St.Lawrence are suffi ciently deepauaj po as to allow the West ern trade to conao to Quebec, £ut there is in the meantime another thing that wp pay do.If the water route is not yet open for y*.jl is possible to shorten the distance
