but the greatest triumph of the military rogues on that day was the (lighting of Ktupp’s gnns with pieces of giitbambe>o.Such are the men who would lead the Chinese braves to victory against disciplined Western troops.—Oirr/ancf China Mail, Rapid Tilbobaphino.—The transmission to Cincinnati on Friday night, last week, of the full text of Senator Conkling’s speech at the Academy of Music, New York, is worthy of mention. The speech was transmitted by the Phillips system of ateno-telegraphy in five hoars and five minutes. This is a process of trans-miffcicn done entirely by hand, and tho despatches are received by au ink recorder of great simplicity, which pays out a narrow strip of tape, on which the matter Is plainly printed in linear characters. The wire wae worked without a " repeater," and the amount of matter transmitted, sixteen thousand words, was fully equal to what would be averaged by the Morse system on three wires, by three senders and three receivers. The speed attained may he more fully realized when it is remembered that Mr.Conkiing spoke for three hours and forty minutes, and that his utterances were transmitted in five houis and five minutes, the entire speech being in tbe Cincinnati Oazt'.lc oilicn one hour and twenty-five minutes after Mr.Conk-ling ceased speaking, notwithstanding that he had been talking fifteen minâtes when the work of transmission was begun.Despatches trans mitted by Mr.Phillips’ methd require no preparation whatever, the operator sending from the manuscript. The nystom carried every punctuation mark used in printing, italicizes all words from foreign languages, names of newspapers, etc., and secures the delivery of copy properly punctusted and edited for the compositor.— Wathinglon Itepiihlican.Society and Tioht Dbbbsino.—A writer in the Ladite' Gazette of Eaehion has the follow!or remsrks on the dress of the period :—L«t ladies array thetn«e!v«* iu blazing garb, a* they pl*-a*e —it matters little ; but what matter* greatly to the world at largo is the appalling tightness of the waist now practised by the clegantet of the period.A few centuries ago officers wera etationed at all public resorts to cut off the traira beyond the regulation length.Pity.mi»«*d, that in there days of liberty similar treatment could not be enforced to snip the suicid div»».Evidently the consequence* in this cate wo-il l 1>e far more embarrassing than the mere curtailing of a train ; but, really, something must be done.I wonder what the national health societies are abont, not to raise their voice against such sinful extravagances. It is really elistressing to see passing by, those tall thin forms swathed a* closely u possible ; their draperies outlining, with the faithfalnesa of sculpture, all the beauties and defects which for propriety’s and comfort’s sake should be discreetly veiled. Can anything look more painful than tho bny, angular arms imprisoned in sheath like sleuvei, which, together with the ridiculously narrow backs, hunch up the shoulders and force the arms into a constrained and unsightly posture ! And as to the spider waists, the wonder is that living beings can breathe in rich a compass. Now that we have had classes for cooking, dressmaking, and ambulance work, it would not certainly be amiss to start new ones for anatomy.Surely, if women had the slightest idea of their own stiactnre, they wonld at once reject a fashion which only ignorance and bad taste have ever tolerated. An Intebbstibo Cibkmoky recently took see In the south of India which may (or a ornent divert our attention from military ents on tho north west frontier.A new nj»n is installed on the throne of Travancore, and record of the proeîeedlcgs now lies before n* in iextraordinary Issue of the Travancore Lavement Gazette. The dynasty dates back for at 1,000 years, tracing its descent, according to alahar custom, through the female lino.1 h* ea of the State is nearly 7.000 square miles ; it* ipnlation exceeds two million souls.Favored r nature and good government, It hai ac-lired the reputation of being the most osperons corner of Hindustan, and has foe-n Bctally held np for Imitation to British Hectors. The new prince, like his brother >fore him, is not only versed in Sourit learning, but also speaks EngU»h trfectiy. After tbe ceremony of coronation ) delivered an eloquent speech, from wb‘ch ay quote th* foiloiving paeeego.whlchls more easant to dwell upon than a military bulb-tin ! killed and wonnoed t " On* of my UlostHo» redeceaeors, who died in the year la which th aster architect, OUvs, laid the foundation ol >* British empire in the East at the laasey (1757).c«dling his ancestor to hU twddds, ive him as tils Urt word* of advice, Tbssj inglisbmen appear destined to rise to pow£ id glory hitherto unparalleled.Be U f^V matant aim and endeavor to secure their friend tipwadsupport.*" Ws may add thaton^.is first acts ol Um rajah was to wHty Mtj ith his own hawFto ths widow of an Kngh^ an who kaddbd in tho emplornen*01 th* lessor confirming a pension granted by hi* prv 0r,-raUMaU Gazette. Witness some weeks since published in its local columns what its informant termed the “ true inwardnesa" of the Pacific scheme, stating at the time that leading capitalists of Germany, France, England, the United States and Canada had combined, making one of the strongest syndicates that bad ever come together, and Hir John Macdonald's speech last night confirmed the statement then published.Oar reporter found " the etreet” to-day, notwithstanding the depreeeing weather, quite jubilant over Hir John's speech.*' The continued depressing reports of the Toronto Globe and the article in the London Timet," said one gentleman, “ had the effect of dampening my spirits, and I know aim made a great number of Conservatives a little anxious, but Sir John'a utterances have cleared away all doubts, and we now feel that a better bargain has been made than we expected,” The construction of the entire road within ten years, and the amount of capital that will be ex pended in connection therewith must cause Urge quantities of money to circulate, while tbs freight of the rails and other material necesiary to construct the road will, it is pointed out create neat enn to assist the enterprise, and some fondly hops that the great North-West may eventually even rival the United Htatee in its greatness." A third gentleman waa very much pleased to hear Hir John aay that he had security for the completion of the road, andaUo for its operation for ten years after its completion. He thought that a syndicate or corporation could halld and ran the road more economically than a Govern mrnt.Hir John'a remark that the road would not exit the older provinces a cent he understood to mean that the Goveratneut had BBTAINEI) A GOOD HHABE Of THE VALUABLE LAND and
