hemp.It is a product which is easily raised and for which there is constant demand. There is a prejudice among farmers against growing flax, 'because it is hard ou the land. This is owing to its abundant seed production.Hemp does not yield so much seed and is less exhaustive than flax.Mr.Curtis recom mends that hemp be sown on a clover sod, which should be turned over In September. At the proper time the ne xt spring, the hemp should be sown broadcast and lightly har rowed, i he same land may be seeded to rye in the autumn, and in the spring following, with clover again.Ths great difficulty in the way of grow-ing hemp heretofore has been the expense of breaking the hard, woody fibre, so as to reduce the product to small balk for easy and cheap transportation. This difficulty cabin. If thia is true it may explain much of the loasof life, although the loaa would still have been great.Estimate» vary as to the total number of dead, There were over two hundred persona on the ateamer and barge when they started to return to Red Wing, very few remaining behind on account of the storm, although many protested against the proposal to ateam up the lake in the face of such a gale aa waa then blowing.Of the whole number it ia known positively that about fifty were saved.More may have escaped bnt only thi* many are known at this time to be eafe. That would leave about 1Ô0 victims of the disaster, but everyone hopes the number will not go bevond 125, A good number are still in the wreck, and a great many are in the bottom of the lake where the gale first struck the steamer, but just how many will not be known for rome time yet.During the morning a systematic patrol of the water over which the hulls had drifted after being firat struck by the £ale bad been kept could not. They had tho good eense to tloat quietly and not attempt to tight againat the waves to the shore.During the time they were in the water, from !» to :i, they were buffeted by the billow» and blown hither and thither by the gale. They first drifted about a mile dowo past the town and then a change in the wind carried them ap the river to Frontenac, aeven miles from here, where they were house and all suggesting some place of sscurity. After a lew moments tho great spinning cloud reached thecentreof the lake and I saw the water divide and overflow the banks some forty feet.As t>apa was others to follow. The building crashed in upon us and then portions of it were hurled skyward.Trees were blown by and a huge ice chest fell into the cellar and pinned ns all down.As we lay there in the there bad not been sutfioient publicity given to the notice* of thia meeting, so that not a few of the ratepayer* were «till in ignoranoe of the whole matter. It was suggested that, in order to bring the matter more fully before Ihe ratepayers, a poll be demanded, but there was some difficulty in getting the requisite number (»ix ratepayer*) to demand a poll, for though several were dissatisfied at the want of publicity given to the whole proceedings, yet they did not want to have their names appear aa if they were opposed to tu:h necessary measures.Alter considerable delay the nrceesary six
