Prince of Wales, who is a lieutenant in the navy and haa been placed in command of a torpedo vessel, will join the North American squadron at Newfoundland in a sew days. From there, it appears, tho Vice Admiral, to whose command the Prince’s vessel Is attached, will sail to Newport, the favorite watering place of wealthy New Yorkers.Society at Newport and in New York is in a flurry, the despatches say, over the enter* tainment of the Prince.Perhaps there is Letter reason than usual for the excitement. In spite of their democracy and republicanism American women’s social ambition is in many cages very great, and seeks satisfaction in titles and the courts of monarchs. Now, it is understood that the Prince of Wales is rather inclined to an American marriage for one, if not both of his song. There is, therefore, a chance for some beautiful and accomplished American girl to reach a social height not yet attained by any of her sisters.Prince George is said, too, to be a manly fellow, with many good qualities and with no vices.Snch a marriage would be a good thing from a political point of view, if politics are concerned in princely matches at all now a days. One Hundred and Twelve People, men, women and children, lost their lives by the “ Lake Pepin ” disaster. There appears to be some reason for believing that the tornado was not wholly to blame for this great catastrophe, the greatest, probably, suffered by so small a community as Red Wing since the disaster on the Thames by which so many families of London, Ontario, were bereaved. When the steamboat left Red Wing the storm had already begun, aa tho wind was blowing hard.In spite, however, of the need for extra carefulness it appears that there was a great deal of liquor drinking going on both on board of the steamer and of the barge, which was apparently taken along because the steamer was overloaded. It is openly charged that the captain of the boat and the engineer, who are both among the few who saved their lives, had been drinking with the rest, and that it was owing to this and the resulting incompetence that the steamer was wricked. Those survivors who are mott moderate in their account of the disaster blame the captain for his mismanagement of the vessel and her passengers during the storm. In the flrst agony of such a bereavement it is only natural that the community shonld be wroth with the person responsible for the safety of the passengers, and it is not improbable that the chargos against the officers and crew of the boat are exaggerated. That there was a groat deal of drinking going on is not denied, as it had necessitated the removal of some women and children from fhe barge, and it is said that some of them sought refuge from the intoxicated in the cabin of the vessel. That in a dUaiter the chances of the women and children would be lessened by the Intoxication, or partial intoxication, of strong men is beyond all doubt.Surely, even liquor-drinkers, while sober, will agree that prohibition should lie enforced, at least on board of excursion steamers.L ACROSS K.Some severe criticisms of the Cornwall-Toronto game have pat lacrosac upon trial.Experienced and skilled Montreal players who were present state that the playing was fast and hard, but that it waa not brutal or unfair, and that the CornwalLs were the l>est men on that occaaion and won on their mérita. If fault is to be found, it must therefore be with the regulations under which the game ia played The game will always be on its trial ao long at certain features which beget extreme roughness are allowed by the rulea. What is required in onr national game is not to shear it of its heroic features, but to secure a just equilibrium between force and skill, and inspire the players with a strong apiritof fair play.It has been suggested that the t>ody check should la done away with. The point is debatable. There shonld la no brute force, and yet without contact with the body what would the game be?Then» should be no body-check unless ono or other player held the ball ; and not then within twelve feet of a fence.Rut is there not a way to reduce the necessity for heavy body-checking ?W'hy not do away with that long flange upon the admitted lacrosse, and the rigging which makes a lacrosse stick of to day more like a scoop net than like the lacrosse the skilful handling of which made Mcllougall, McDonald, Noyes, Sten-house, Rlack Peter, the Daillebouts, and scores of otheia famous before this generation was heard of.Compare a lacrosse stick of thirty years ago with the weapon of to-day.The cage in which the ball ia carried to-day explains why bodychecking is nowadays so severe. The shook necessary to dislodge the ball from the lacrosse now uaed has to be very great. There is no skill required in running at full ¦peed and carrying a ball in the netting of the lacrosse of to day.Rut to do so with the old-fashioned stick required both care and skill. To chtok then did not require the delivery of a heavy shock, which must be injurious aa well aa painful, and which is, therefore, to be deprecated by all who desire that our games shall be healthful.“ The Indiana can't throw" waa a favorite expreaalon aa to the red men years ago. That was because their etloks were then honest and the gat as tight aa a drum-head.They, too, have learned the advantage of the flange and the acoop-net.One would fancy that the march of improvement, as manifested in the liner playing grounds, the better circum-stances of the clubs, the better encouragement given by tho public would have led to improved principles of fair play among athletes.Much has been done. The rulea and regulations have improved and the playing ia better, but much remains to be done. There ia too much desire to win at any cost, get favorable umpires, friendly referees,— anything to "get there,” at the vernacular puts it.Thia comes, we are afraid, of betting and gambling in connection with the matcheu. The spirit shown by Paotta in his race with Kennedy in England should be imported. He would not take a race he could have won by an opponent falling out of his boat.He waited until the man got in again and had a fresh start.A professional athlete who had backers would have been severely reprimanded for thus refusing to secure their winning in their gambling. When ahall we see a lacrosse championship team refuse to take a game except it was fairly won ?Take away the body check by all meant, but also shave down the flange and draw the strings of the netting straight.A baggy lacrosse should bo as detestable to a lacrosse player aa baggy-kneed trousers are to a dandy, and any man who "baggi" the netting of his stick should be held, metaphorically, as well as literally, “ to have put his foot ia it.” LOCAL FIRES.At 11 20 Ia0, and she fears it, too, ha* been consumed. The building wa« owned by the Montreal Bill
