abet the violation of laws of a foreign State, the English Government preferred refusing to receive slaves on board to surrendering them after they were received.Lord Cairns called to mind what the the bonded custodian of nearly four hundred million dollars of trust funds, which sum, with its gains from compound interest, is a legacy held in store for thousands of families.All that is needed, then, is that those proposing to insure their lives shall exercise common prudence in the selection of the company to whose guardianship they are about to entrust the future comfort of their families.This duty is as important ÇITY ?oraW MLcfeS that belongs to our daily life, hereafter.The business condition of such companies as the Equitable Life Assurance Society is intelligible to all persons, and there is no reason why, where the path is so plain, the wayfarer should err in selecting such an institution to be the custodian of the future welfare of his family.Canadian Branch Office—198 St.James Street. It.W.GALE, Genl.-Manager.MONTREAL HERALD AND DAILY COMMERCiaTi GAZETTE, WEDNESDAY.MARCH S, 1876.(ftvoccvics, ‘SSliucg, Sit, FRESH MUSHROOMS FROM Col.Rhodes’ Fruit Farm, QUEBEC.Constant supplies at McGIBBOlV *fc IS A IRIV.*-'.March 2 ly 53 CREAM CHEESE, From Col.RHODES, Quebec, for sale.McGIBBOlV & BAIRD.March 2________________ly 53 PRUNES, RAISINS, &C.100 Kegs Violet’s Prunes, for stewing ; there is nothing to compel the assignee to employ these persons, if he deems them unfit, or if he preferred to employ others taken from outside.The question of whether he should or should not A LIVING RELIC OF ANTIQUITY IN CYPRUS.From the Independent.Cyprus, one of the chief seats of the ancient worship of Venus, still keeps up sundry festivals derived from that worship, though mingled with Christian, or at least Biblical ideas.One of the strangest of these occurs on the 11th June in each year, and is called the “ Cataclysme,” a name that is merely the Cypriote form of “ Cataclysmes,” moaning, of course, the Flood.But the festival has nothing more than its name that can refer to the Deluge.As the day approaches, gay preparations are made on shore, and the boatmen paint their boats in gaudy colors and adorn them with flags and streamers.When the day comes, a young girl in her teens, as remarkable for beauty as can be found, is forcibly captured and carried out on the sea in a boat, the other boats of the neighbourhood accompanying in a fleet.At the proper distance from shore, with various (and probably appropriate) ceremonies, the girl is thrown into the sea.As she rises again from the water she is picked up, with loud demonstrations of joy, taken into the gayest boat, and carried to the shore again in triumph.She is then crowned, provided with attendants of honour, and worshipped all the day as a queen or demi-goddess.Besides the ceremonies, which are much like the English Mayday, there is an abundance of noise and I'evelvy, which are usually kept up through the following night, rendering sleep in the neighbourhood impossible.The scholar will at once recognize here a relic of the worship of Venus Anadyomene, who rose from the waves near Cyprus.The inhabitants say this ceremony has existed among them “ from the time of Venus,” in in whom they believe as a veritable personage.MAIÏAVILLA COCOA.—Taylor Erothres London, having the exclusive supply ot this unrivalled Cocoa, Invite comparison with any other Cocoa tor Purity—Une Aroma—Sanative, Nutritive and Sustaining Power.One trial will establish It as a favorite Beverage for breakfast, luncheon, and a Soothing Refreshment after a late evening.MARAVILLA COCOA.— The Globe says:— “ Taylor Brothers’ Maravllla Cocoa has achieved a thorough success, and supersedes every other Cocoa in the Market.Entire solubility, a delicate aroma, and a rare concentration of the purest elements ol nutrition, distinguish the Maravllla Cocoa above all others.For consumers of Cocoa, especially Invalids and Dyspeptics, we could no'; in the case of humour it is the incongruity of the normal itself.Caricature laughs at the breach of the accustomed laws of nature and the conventional laws of man, which laws it accepts as final.Humour (comparing them, perhaps, with some ideal of its own) sees the incongruity of those very laws themselves—laws which are the caricaturist’s standard.Humour, indeed, as we see at once in literature, is based on metaphysics, caricature on experience.A child can become a caricaturist by adding aline or two to the nose of Wellington, or reversing the nose of the Venus de Medici.The humourist has so long been saying to himself, “ What a whimsical idea is the human nose ?” that he smiles at the child’s laughter on seeing it turned upside down.So with conversation.Whatever is a breach of the local laws of the game of social life, whether the laws be those of a village pothouse or of Mayfair, whatever displays an ignorance of matters of familiar knowledge, those are the quarry of the caricturist.The humorist, on the other hand, as we see in the greatest masters of humour, is so perpetually overwhelmed with the stupendous joke of the entire game, from the droll little conventions of the village pot-house—from those of London, of Paris, of Pekin, or Levuka—up to the meaningless dance of the planets round the sun—up again to that greater but no less meaningless waltz of suns around the centre —he is so delighted with the delicious foolishness of wisdom, the conceited ignorance of knowledge, the grotesqueness even of the standard of beauty itself—above all.Nature amusing herself, not merely with her flamingoes, her penguins, her dromedaries, but these more whimsical creatures still, these “ featherless bipeds,” which are nevertheless proved to be not plucked fowls —these proud high thinking organisms— stomachs with heads, arms, and legs as useful appendages—these countless little Me’s—so all alike, and yet so unlike—each one feeling, knowing, itself to be the Me round whom all other Me’s revolve ; so overwhelmed is the humourist with the whim of all this—with the incogruity, that is, of the normal itself—with the ” almighty joke” of the Cosmos as it is—that he sees nothing “ funny’’ in departures from laws which to him are in themselves the very quintesence of fun.That old Greek who died of laughter from seeing a donkey eat could have told us what the superlative feeling of humour really is, though he died from a sharp and sudden recognition of the humour of the bodily functions merely.And naturally, what is such a perennial source of amusement to the humorist, he gets to love.Mere representation, therefore, is with him the be-all and end-all of art.Exaggeration offends him.Nothing to him is so rich as the real.He pronounces the public-house scene in “ Silas Marner ” to he more humorous than the trial scene in “Pickwick.” AYilkie’s realism he finds more humorous than the funniest cartoon in the funniest comic journal.THE TRUE CUSTODIAN.When a father of a family, whose labours and earnings have been devoted to the support and education of his children, sits down calmly to reflect that the time is coming, and perhaps very soon, when he can no longer stand between these loved ones and their financial foes ; when poverty, like an armed man, and temptation in myriad forms will come into a home which he has thus far protected, it is not surprising that the prospect should be gloomy.And if there was no such beneficent provision as that which, life insurance affords for exigencies of this very kind, the situation would, indeed, be hopeless.For, benevolent as may he the impulses of a certain LUMBER FOR SALE.The undersigned are prepared to furnish all kinds of Lumber for Building purposes, also Planks, Deals, Scantlings, Earrings and Shingles, at the shortest notice and on most reasonable terms.Also 500,000 BRICKS AND 1,500 CORDS FIREWOOD AT $4 PER CORD.All orders will be promptly attended to.Goods delivered at Montreal, if desired.C.& T.RASCONY.Acton Vale Mills, 4th Feb., 1876.r 54 Staticrwevjj.SUTHERLAND’S WHEEL' UNSURPASSED FOR DURABILITY.Previous to getting in a new Stock of the above, I intend clearing out the lot now on hand, and, meantime, offer them at Wholesale Frloes Nett.A SPECIAL WARRANTY GIVEN WITH EACH PRESS!.JAMES SUTHERLAND, Wholesale Stationer and Blank Book Manufacturer, 256 &.258 St.James St.February 16 ]y 40 STATIONERS’ HALL FinestRussia'Leather Pocket Books.Metallic Memos Card Cases “ “ “ Wallets “ “ “ Tourists’ Cases ** - - Jl«._^ «*»_ Setts of Bezique Cribbage Boards, Backgammon Boards CHESSMEN, IN IVORY, WOOD AND BONE, NEW PATTERNS.We are now shewing a very fine assortment of the above goods, at low prices.MURRAY & CO.Stationers’ Hall, 387 Notre Dame Htreet.February 21, 44 23av0cs fov ^alc.BARGES FOR SALE.TWELVE OR MORE BARGES Well adapted to carry Dressed f Stones for the Canal works.Can he bought Cheap for Cash Apply “ The Sincennes-Mc Naughton Line.D.SINCENNES, Secretary.December 28 30 |?vcss fov ;§>ale.To Printers.A HOB ML CYLINDER PRESS, COMFTYFTF, fitted with Air Buffers;
