quiet at par IS) 4 prem.In New York there is no change in the posted rates for Sterling Exchange, which remain at $4.834 for 60 day bills, and $4.883 for sight.Gold continues at par.Speaking of the disappearance of the premium on Tuesday, the New York Journal of Commerce says : “ Gold sold at par in currency for the first time since January 11, 1862.On that day there was no premium for gold, and the first record of any price after that was on Monday, January 13, when sales were made at 103.The immediate cause of the decline to-day was the unloading of the conspirators who bought gold late in November and early this month for the purpose of locking it up in the expectation of influencing the stock market. They failed in their design upon stocks, and having no further use for their gold disposed of it in the market and privately.” London advices report Consols weaker at 94 3-16 for money ; 94 7-16 for the account. In Paris Five per cent.Rentes are at 112f.85c.The local “ “ ® 1011 Montreal Telegraph.125 IS 108 In the history of banks there is probably no record of greater hardship than has happened to the Caledonian Bank, which has been forced to go into liquidation through an act on the part of the Directors which was dictated by motives of prudence, that were praiseworthy in themselves though the results have been disastrous. The case is a simple one.The Caledonian Bank was carrying on a sound, steady business in a portion of the country which was least likely to be much affected by any commercial disaster, and few provincial banks were apparently in a more healthy condition ; none of the hazardous methods of increasing their profits, which have so often proved to be the bane of other banks, had in this case been resorted to.Paradoxical as it may appear, the ruin of the bank was brought about through obtaining security for an over-draft.The advance was entirely within the scope of the legitimate business of such an institution, being for a comparatively small amount to a local man ; and, to make the debt safe, the bank took as security four shares in the City of Glasgow Bank of the nominal value of £100 each. This was the/ons ei origo mali.An apparent exercise of ordinary caution in protecting the bank has turned out to be its ruin. The head office of the Caledonian was at Inverness, and it had twenty-two agencies, principally in the north of Scotland ; the paid-up capital amounted to £150,000.The average circulation last year was £125,000, its authorized circulation £53,439, and its deposits £1,043,000.The shares were £10 each, but only £2 10s.is paid up.The last annual dividend was 14 per cent., the same as in the previous year, and 4 per cent-more than in 1868.The other Scotch banks have made arrangements for carrying on the business of the Caledonian, so that the local difficulties of the situation will be reduced to the smallest proportions, while the effect on business in other parts of the country is very slight. The Economist states that beyond the temporary inconvenience to depositors no further evil consequences are likely to arise from the stoppage of the Caledonian Bank, and no doubt is expressed as to the solvency of the institution, which appears to have been well and honestly managed. Its suspension is due to its unfortunate position as a holder of four shares in the City of Glasgow Bank. The liquidators of the City Bank believing that some of the wealthier shareholders of the Caledonian Bank were getting rid of their shares felt it their duty to insist either upon the deposit of a very large sum as security for the calls they will require to make, or the closing of the transfer books, so that the shares of the Caledonian Bank might not be permitted to pass into the hands of persons without means.the other Scotch banks advised the Caledonian to go into liquidation, but at the same time they showed their confidence in it by undertaking to take up its outstanding notes immediately, and to pay its depositors in full as soon as the Court of Session sanctions the arrangement. The commercial columns of the Boston Advertiser contain the following obituary notice of Gold Premium :—“ It becomes our duty this morning to chronicle the fact that, from the effect of a slight fall to-day, an old acquaintance of business men who, for the last sixteen years, has always been consulted when any important business enterprise was on foot, has ceased to exist.Having been an invalid for some time past ¦in fact, quite low—the passing away was not entirely unexpected, although many thought it might linger along until the first of January. But it was not to be, and after a brief struggle, in which it did not have an eighth of a chance, it fell, and expired. The news was quickly sent over the wires, and doubtless the whole country ere this is prepared to pay its respects in a fitting way when the obsequies are observed. The deceased was nearly sixteen years old, having been born January 13, 1862, in the troublous times of the war, during which it thrived wonderfully. It reached the period of its greatest strength in 1864, and enjoyed a vigorous existence for several years longer, profiting largely from the inflated ideas of its acquaintances, which increased its own importance in a commensurate degree. For the past few years, however, it has been sickly, but, like Sebastopol of old, it ‘ held out ’ wonderfully well, and fell only when all its defences had been captured and broken down. But it had outlived its usefulness; the friends of its youth had departed and there are but few left to mourn its taking off.The name of the deceased was Gold Premium ; a natural son of Legal-Tender Greenback, whose wife was inflation, of blessed memory to all surviving Green-backers.The funeral rites will probably be observed at the Gold Exchange tomorrow. No flowers.0 22 .0 21 .0 so .0 20 .0 00 .0 22 .0 32 ® 0 20)4 0 twelve inches of snow in the pineries ; but, as the swamps are all open, and there is no frost in the ground, the hauling is not good, and very little is being done in the way of snow logging. The railroads are all busy, however, and through tlioir instrumentality considerable timber has reached the bank.Logging work is hardly as well advanced as is usual at this date, but, with the railroads to fall back upon, the operators are sure of having all the logs they want under any circumstances.” Maracaibo.o 20 Jamaica.0 19 Java [Govt].0 29 Rio.*.0 19 Ceylon.o oo Singapore.o 20
