2.00 TIIR DEMORALIZED COAL MARKET.The anthracite coal trade has been demoralized during the past two months, but not by the auction sales, as so glibly referred to by some portions of the press, but by the fictif ions circulars that have been issued and by boosting the auction sales when it was deemed ex-1 pedient to do so.The sale of July 30 was fictitious in the prices realized, and any comparison thereto with the last two sales clearly proves the truth of the above statement. It is an absurd way to sell any such commodity as ceal, and we have ofLn said soin this journal. From what we can learn the current rate for coal during July has not averaged much over the results of the sale of August 13.The trouble is that too much coal was mined during July and August. It is absurd to write that there is no disposition on the part of producers to push sales, preferring to wait until the usual fall demand will stiffen prices.Coal has been rushed.Dealers and consumers laid in during April, May and Jane what they usually take later on, and the consequence is the market is in such a condition as has not been recorded for years.\u2014Coal Trade Journal, Sept.3- 8 75 4 60 6 CO o u 8 00 2 60 small business at unchanged prices, while private Cables from London notea decline of 6d.per quarter ; in both markets .Corn is reported firmer. In Chicago wheat was about steady, opening and closing at 86Jc for October delivery. There is nothing doing here yet in Canada Wheat, and quotations for coarse grains are nominal, little or no business yet transpiring. There is a somewhat better enquiry for Flour ; Spring Extras are very scarce and firmly held at $4.85, on some other descriptions there is a slight shading on outside values, still prices are on the whole fairly steady. There is a moderate demand for Ontario Bags at about $2.35, and City Bags are selling to the local trade at $2.50 fit $2.55 delivered. There is a better tone for Butter, and stocks are moving off at the slight improvement in prices previously noted ; still the market cannot be called steady except for the finest qualities which find more ready sale ; finest Creameries bring 16c, selections of Eastern Townships, 12£c, and of Morris-burg and Brockville, ll^c.The Liverpool cable quotes an advance of 6d.in Cheese, bringing the price for finest up to 30s, but the advance is not suflicient to cause any material change in prices here ; fine Cheese can be obtained at 5Jc though 5|c ® 6c is quoted for something fancy, but the latter is an extreme figure and we hear of no sales above 5 Jc.\tHog products are quiet ; Chicago Mess Pork is maying in ALBANY LUMBER MARKET.Fob the Week Ending Sept.3.The business in pine lumber since our last report has been good at the advanced quotations, the sales covering a fair quantity of dry clear lumber. Our quotations of freights from Saginaw to Tonawanda are higher, and should they continue to advance higher quotations for pine lumber must follow. The trade seems to accept present quotations as likely to be maintained, and several round lots, covering all grades of pine, have recently changed hands.Coarse lumber is in steady demand with only moderate stocks, the supplies from the northern mills being still very light.Onr quotations have been advanced, chiefly on spruce, and the market is very firm at quotations. The receipts at Albany by canal from the opening
