The Quebec mercury

The calculation of these few items mentioned above, with the talked of impost upon the frequenters of this market and its wharf, is evidence sufficient to call the attention of our city Responsibles to the consideration of the policy (we term it impolicy) of farming out so valuable a source of revenue, and to the imperativeness of appointing competent and active officers to collect, for t!.e city, that which is now sought to be perverted into a source of private revenue. We arc taxed heavily enough, and it is the duty of our representatives in the Corporation to consider how the present monetary returns can best and most fully be collected. In the present case (to resume) £75 has been paid for collecting £150,—a speculator offers £350.and assumes the cost of collection. This speculator naturally counts upon a remuneration, nml competent persons tell ua that, with proper vigilance, J6800 a year, ut least, might lie drawn from their market in question. Will our City Fathers take the hint, and bestir themselves ; if not they ought to be made accountable to their constituents. After Mr.Scott’s ex/wsc—for his offer amounts to that— they have no shadow of excuse for future neglect. To Quebec Travem.f.us—The Ri.vfke House.—As the season of travelling will shortly comrm rice, we desire to bring under the notice of those of our Quebec friends who purpose a visit to Boston, an establishment in every essentia!
