for, dinguise the question bow they may, it just comes to this: Shall the representatives of the people of the Province legislate in the interest of the people, or shall they vote them: selves Body and soul the property of the Grand Trunk Railway Company ?The people of Huntingdon understand the position of afluirs thorough y and at a meeting of the County Council held on Wednesday last adopted a petition to the Legislature in favor of the South Shore Company.Among the reasons assigned by the petitioners for the ranting of their request aro the fol owing ; that the section of country extending from Caughnawaga westward to the Province Line though thickly populated is entirely destitute of railway facilities ; that the petition ers see no reasonable prospect of the Montreal and Champlain Junction Company relieving them from their isulated position, because that Company has announced to them verbally and in writing that it will not build the branch from 8t.Isidore to Dundee, for which it holds & charter from the Dominion Government, except upon conditions with which the municipalities the petitioners rc nt Cannut comply ; that Ne.Hickeon had definitely iuférmed the petitioners that the said branch would uot be built except it was subsidised to the oxtent of 8300 000 ; that the said branch trom St.Isidore to Dundee, even if built, of which the petitioners de nut see the slightest prospect, would not fully accommodate the inhabitants of the dis: trict of Beauharnois, inasmuch as it would have no connestion westward, the Montreal and Champlain Junction Company, in their communications with potitioners baving given only vague promises on that bead, and decisively refused to guarantee any junction with the American rail sy» tom, even in the event of the petition- ors contributing the exturtivuate aid asked for by the Company ; that the communications beld with the June tion Company by the petitioners oun.vines them that tbe Company obtained its charter for the conatruction of the road simply with the view to prevent tho extehaion to Montreal of coimpeting lines to the Grand Trunk, south of the St.Lawrence ; ad, thal the Sous .Shore , while Îte will or ta (be people of the distries asks neither Government or municipal ., aéliéiance.À atronger dws gould | hardly be put and the arguments | which s0 well represent the circumstances of the district of Beaubarnois sppir with equal force to the city of ontreal and the Province generally. In view of the utter want of a valid reason agsinst the granting of the charter, which is not so thoroughly selfish as to make it contemptible, it is incrediblo that open opposition will be uffored 10 the parsage of the bill.We trust, however, that we shall not be mistuken in our conelusion that the Legislature of Quebec will prove true to the best interests of the Province by granting with an overwhelming vole a charter te the Seuth Bhore Hailway and Tunnel Company, and thus enter the thin end of the wedge whiob shall oventusily free the trade of our Province from the control of à grasping monopoly.— Star.THE SOUTH SUORE RAILWAY.To the Editor of the Montreal *‘Herald" : Bir,—Your jourval, since Monday, seems to be the medium of articles in reference to the proposed South Shore Railway and Tunnel Company, ongine ating from different sources, but which do not materially intesest the public, a8 it matters little toPbem who are the originators of the bill, or what railway approves of it, The question is a Provincial one.and one in which the people of the P:0- vinoe of Quebwo are deeply interested.Moutreal has a large interest, Quebec also, and all the towne and municipalities on the lino vf the Q.M.0.& 0.Railway.Who are the parties opposing the bill?Thoy are no partive, It is simply the Grand Trunk Railway and its employees and parties employed by them that have so far shown any opposition.Tho promoters of this bill have not asked the Government for any subsidy, nor have they nskod any municipality for any subscription. They olaim that they oan and will construct the Railway within two yours and the Tunnel within three years. The sudden and aparmodic commencement of the work on the Champlain Junction Kailway at Laprarie by two or three amateur geontlemon, followed up by a few straggling shovellers sent there a few days since by the Grand Trank Railway, everyune knows was merely to uffect the Legislature now in session at Quebec.[have no doubt the Graed Trunk and ita em ployes are distressed, and gee in the construction of this South Shore Road a great competitor for Western bus.ineas, lower rates and quick trangit; but who elw in the Province of Quebec are opposed to cumpotition and cheap traffic rates as between the West and Montreal ?Are the citizens of the Province of Quebec, after having spent some tweuly millions of dollars in the Railway botween Ottawa and Quebec, satisfied to alluw their Railway to become a failure for the want ot a proper outlet South, East and West ?Wbo caused the Province of Quebec to assume the construction of the Q.M.0.& OU.Railway ?A large Government subsidy aud municipal subecri tions wore generously granted to help in the construction of this road, and capitalists ard gentlemen standing high financially were interested in the London this same Grand Trunk Company, through their network of stockholders, dofeated them, and the Government consequently were obli to assume the work. What railway in Uanada bus Jever received any friendebip or assie- tance from Vor Trunk Bailey Company ?have s- our : Canade Ppoifo, the Q.M.0.KO.raie money in !lised most of the smal rullway ; There is no wonder that Toronto has been making such rupid strides in centering the business there, as against Montreal ! They got their freights laid down at lower prices than in Montresl, snd, of course, can sell their goods us low or lower.ls this the cause of so many wholesale hounes baving removed from Montreal to Toronto iu the past fow years?Ifcompetition upd low rates of freight have benefitted and helped Toronto, will competition bs injurious to Montreal and the Province of Quebec ?The quostion is, shall the people of the Province of Quebec be permitted to have any other railway communication Kast, South or West, except the Gand Trunk Railway? No one questions tho benefit which Canada has derived from the Grand Trunk, but thore are a good many other ruilways that have been built since the Grand Trunk was built. The country has increased in wealth and population, Towus have grown to cities, and cities have doubled, tripled, and quadrupled since, No Railway Company now can for long dictate terms to the people.Progress, improvement, competition and advancement are the watchwords for the present.Prooukss.Montreal, June 12, 1880.SENSIBLE ADVICE.English Farmers Told to Cross the Sea If They Would Escape the Pangs of Poverty.(London Times ) It is becoming a serious problem what agriculturists are to do.They will not get rents much lowered ina burry, tor land still commands a hizh value in the market, and is difficult to be got at all except under special circumstances.Large proprietors would rather cultivate their own land at a loss than submit Lo à reduction of rent telling on its value, Nor have the farming class any right to occupy land except on rvch terms as the owner may insist upon. They have now the world before them. Why do they not start for the regions where land can be cheaply rented and cheaply bought, within easy reach of the bust market in the world, viz, our own? From al!
