Daily evening mercury

The 40th Regiment has been ordered to Halifax. The arrival of a British regiment to take the place of another regiment sent home for repairs is not usually a very important event, but in this case a good deal of historical interest attaches to the change. The old 49th fought in Canada in 1812.It was at Queenston Heights, with about 200 of the York militia, and resisted the attack of the American Col, Van Renselaer and his thirteen hundred men, It witnessed the death of General Brock. It aided in the capture of the American fort at Salmon river.Subsequently it occupied Fort George, and afterwards a detachment of thirty-six men from the 49th held Beaver Dam against the Americans thus saving Burlington Heights and Canada. The 49th is an old friend.Though of course its persouncl has changed, the honors belonging to the regiment -e retained.— ce Political News.It is said that Mr.Thompson, the new Minister of Justice, has suspended arrangements for taking a residence in Ottawa until the result of the ministerial crisis is known, and has obtained leave of absence from Ottawa for several weeks. It is learned, from those interested in the rebellion losses claims before the Department of the Interior, that it is impossible to get these claims liquidated.Mr.White, Minister of the Interior, has no funds, and refuses to ask a Governor- General's warrant until the present difficulties are settled.— Army Signals.] Ordinary army signalling, by waving flags or torches, can transmit only ten words or so a minute, spelled out by letters ; hut an adaptation of the Morse telegraph alphabet, now generally employed.has more than doubled this rate of speed.——— The Temperature. The following is the Temperature Record for every 24 hours'in the shade at The Msncour office, 130 feet above sprin, le, na vogietured by the in thermometer of Negro?+ Zimbra, Holburn Viaduct, London, (Philosopn._} Init ument Makers to Her Majesty and the Admiralty), made especially for our Use :— 1885 inde 8 am.3 pn.94" mind.aspeot ; mum.Decl.24 30 2 31 e cloudy “2 17 2 23 28 — clear “3 0B 28 33 38 —anow din “ 4 15 16 20 .30 w clear “5 18 23 2 2 s mowéin “ 8 7 8 10 18 n clear «7 128 % 21 24 w cloud “8 8 18 90 2] eo variable “9 18 2 25 26 + alect 10.2 32 35 39 w clear un “n 2 26 21 32 e cloudy “ 12.i314 17 2% w clear “13 15 3 25 27 wamewGin “la 25 28 34 35 wanow Gin 18 15 17 12 33 w = clear “18 8° 4 10 lé n clear “17.3° 2 .7.10 w clear “18 4 8 14 "16 3 cloudy “10 17 Zé di 30 e snow Jin “2, 22 2% UH 3 6 cloudy “21, 4° 2 10 14 — cloudy “2 4° 5 1 13 w dear “23 12 2 » “sw rain “9, 30 3 2 35 a clear “ 2 5 10 15 18 sw clear “ 26.2 8 19 18 6 cloudy Puny, sickly, fretful children are very trying to the patience of all who have the care of them, and in the majority of cases tuo fretfulness arises from 8 weak and omacinted condition of the body, caused by the drain un the constitution during the pest of teetliing, or the ho growth of child) , in such cases give Robinson's Phosphorised Emuision uccotting to directions, or the advice of your Physician, — et MARRIED.Dnvmmoxn-BicxLæy—In St.George's Church, December 28rd, by the Very Rov.the Dean of Montreal, Arthur Percy Drummond, son of the late Andrew Drummond, Eag., of Toronto, to Clara Lina, thipd daughter of P.P.Bi.eo, , l.ay., of that city.| sold at the Church door of the Parish of St, Carpets | Curtains I FURNISIIING GOODS NEWEST DESIGNS, all at pri iver- sully admlited to bo the best value and Cheapoat In the City.Brussels Carpots aud Horders to matoh.Tapest Carpets and Borders to match.White Lave Curtains from 61,15 or 81.09 set Cream Lace Curtains from $5.00 or $n net.Baye Lace Curtains from 84.26, Cream & Gold Guipure Gurtains from 83:00.Crimson & Koru Canvas Curtains from ES 5é.inch White Curtain Net from 340.Guipure Lace and Velvet Antimbonssars, Jute and Tapestry Curtain Materia) (some very cheapand sffactive novelties ust received, ) urtain Poles, Rings, Chains, Stair Rods, be Mata, Mattings, Rugs, etc, 5 Per Cent.Discount for Cash.GLOVER,FRY &GO CHRISTMAS | English friuta, from Bo.per yard.rinta—apeoial 1o§ bought ex prea!
