la base aérienne de Rockcliffe.La causerie était organisée par le Mu-séoparc Vanier Museopark.« C\u2019est avec une certaine nostalgie que j\u2019ai pris ma dernière marche sur le site de l\u2019ancienne base aérienne de Rockcliffe qui fermait définitivement ses portes au public un 31 juillet 2009 », a raconté Robert Serré.La base aérienne était située près de « Range Road ».L\u2019armée utilisait, dès 1898, le terrain afin d\u2019effectuer des tirs d\u2019armes à feu.C\u2019est vraiment en 1918 que l\u2019Armée de l\u2019air effectua des vols expérimentaux entre Ottawa this article is not the definite end all and be all on the subject of bed bugs.However bed bugs appear to be on the rise around the world, as more and more experts and professionals in pest control report huge rises in prevalence, even so far as to suggest we are on the verge of a bed bug pandemic.We searched the Web and we are sharing with you our findings.The Mayo Clinic in the States link the resurgence of bed bugs in developed countries to increased international travel, changes in pest control practices and insecticide resistance.A female bed bug can lay more than 200 eggs in her lifetime, which typically lasts for about 10 months.Newly hatched bed bugs are nearly colorless, so they are hard to spot.They shed their skin five times as they grow, and need a blood meal for each moult.Indeed, those little bugs are nocturnal and feed off human blood.They usually live inside mattresses, where they have convenient access to a food source - you.They crawl out just before dawn and bite you, sucking out blood for a couple of minutes.You don\u2019t feel anything until after the bed bug is already safely back in its home.They will usually bite once a week or so, and they can actually live for a long time without feeding - usually six months.Their bite is annoying and they can cause minor skin irritation and rashes, especially if you\u2019ve got a lot of them in your mattress.So it\u2019s always a good idea to get rid of them - because each bed bug can lay four or five eggs a day.During the day bed bugs will hide in the cracks of mattresses, box springs, bed frames and headboards.But they can also be found under peeling paint and loose wallpaper and under carpeting near baseboards.Bed bugs don\u2019t care if their environment is clean or dirty.All they need is a warm host and plenty of hiding places.Even pristine homes and hotels can harbour bed bugs.Living in an apartment may put you at risk of getting bed bugs.So where are you going to live?It\u2019s just an added risk -people in houses also can harbour them.Because bed bugs often live or crawl in the spaces in between walls as well, and if your neighbours have them, you could as well.That also makes it harder for you to permanently get rid of them since you\u2019ve got a potential source until your neighbours take care of their own infestation.A common way of getting them is if you buy used clothes or used furniture, sometimes there can be bed bugs in them.The nearly immaculate mattress you found down the street may not be the prize you initially thought it was.So, how do you know if you have bed bugs?They create a lot of waste, and that is harder to hide than them.It can consist of dark spots on your mattress.The bites themselves will create little red spots on your skin.They are hard to identify.Keep a flashlight by your bed, and turn it on about an hour before dawn and watch the sheets closely for movement.Bed bugs usually bite around then but if you get up or move too much they will go back into hiding.Now let\u2019s get rid of them! With bed bugs, there isn\u2019t a single, standard way that the exterminator you hire will use to deal with them.One treatment or another may work depending on the actual technique used (talk to your professional exterminator).One common natural remedy people propose for bed bugs is to leave things that are infested outdoors, hoping that either cold weather or the heat will kill them off.This is a remedy that will get mixed results.If you\u2019re trying to freeze them out, it takes a week or two for them to die at minus something C°.Cleaning up your house is something you should do if you have bed bugs.This will give bed bugs fewer places to hide and will get rid of a lot of the eggs that could be laying around.But going to a professional exterminator seems to be the only way to truly get a handle on these bugs.The cost of renting a place has just risen because you should do the following even if you are not the owner of your property: seal up any holes, pipes, cracks, areas around wires and around your walls.These are common entrance points, especially in apartments or duplexes -caulk is often a good way to block them up.Vacuum everywhere.One solution that has proved its worth is buying a specialized mattress cover.This is a little bit different from the standard cover you would get that just keeps the top from getting stains on it.Rather than just going over it, it actually zips around it entirely and seals up the inside -meaning no bugs are getting in or out.The ones inside will die off, because they\u2019ve got no chance to get out and get food.This will take at least six months or so.Exterminators are pretty sure these remedies will not work: Fiddling with the thermostat isn\u2019t going to cut it.It needs to be about 60 C° to kill them with heat, or minus something C° to kill them with cold.Even if you can get your house or apartment to those temperatures, it won\u2019t be uniform.So leave that dial alone.Bleaching has drawbacks by damaging your mattress and it may irrate your skin worst than the bed bugs.We got a call from a Vanier resident and took the picture of the dead bed bug that inspired this story.Making Vanier an Even Better Place
