Winter Carnival at Alexander Galt Regional High School (AGRHS) is without a doubt the most awaited school event of the year.Students, staff, and alumni alike have a wide array of memories to share about the long-standing tradition. In honour of the school and the event’s 50th anniversary, AGRHS held one of its most impressive editions on Thursday, Feb.14.Students were separated into four groups that would eventually compete against one another for the winning title: the Devils, the Armadillos, the Lizards, and the Gremlins. They enjoyed a full day of activities, including horse- Community mourning following sudden death of Jacques Madore Record Staff The municipality of St-Malo and the Coaticook MRC are in mourning following the unexpected death of Mayor and Prefect Jacques Madore on Wednesday.Madore was Mayor of the municipality of Saint-Malo for 13 years and was elected prefect of the MRC in 2013.He was recognized as a man with great listening skills and his joie de vivre and his enthusiasm made him appreciated by all as a colleague and elected representative. In the wake of the news of Madore’s passing, Deputy MRC Prefect Simon Madore emphasized the exceptional contributions of the late Prefect, calling him a man who has devoted to his citizens and his region."Jacques Madore has left his mark on our beautiful region forever through his collaboration and his involvement both as Mayor and Prefect,” said Dominick Faucher, Executive Director of the Coati- cook MRC.“On my behalf, as well as on behalf of the Municipality of Saint-Malo and the Coaticook MRC, we offer our deepest condolences to his wife, his daughters, and his entire family." Alexander Galt holds its 50th edition of Carnival PHOTO CREDIT: MEAGAN MCKINVEN CONT’D ON PAGE 3 Submitted by Shanna Bernier Ihave been a teenager and I have worked with lots of teenagers, someday I will parent teenagers. They are weird creatures. The more time I spend with them, the more they astound and confound me.During your adolescence your brain is still growing, specifically your prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is the decision-making part of the brain, responsible for our ability to plan and think about the consequences of actions, to solve problems and control impulses.Changes in this part of the brain continue into early adulthood.A teen knows more than they have ever known before, and that is exciting, but their capacities for empathy and impulse control are still developing.I once had a colleague who described 9th graders as “almost people”: not to imply that they didn’t require the rights and respect that human beings deserve but that the ages between thirteen and twenty can be deceiving.Sometimes teens are so wise and moving and say exactly the right thing, and other times they are ridiculous and make terrible choices, not only for themselves but for others around them. The volatile emotions that hormonal fluctuations and major life-stage experiences evoke are also mind-blow- ing.Toddlers get a lot of credit for the expression of their massive feelings in the form of a tantrum on the floor of the shopping centre but a teenage tantrum might involve human lives trapped inside a moving vehicle.Suffice to say, teenagers are interesting. It is no wonder, then, that a whole genre of books has been devoted to this particular stage of life.Young Adult literature, or YA— which I have explored in this column before— is centred on teens and young adults. They are the protagonists and, presumably, also the target readers (although plenty of YA lit is read by plain old adults who might be long past the Y for young stage, and that is just fine in my opinion).Novels geared towards the young are not a new phenomenon but as any frequenter of libraries and bookstores might have noticed, it is a market which has grown a lot in the past few decades. The book I wish to discuss today fits into this genre, but it goes one step further and more literally explores the teenage condition. It does this not through the lenses of tragedy, science fiction or magical adventure but rather though the mundane struggles of a clever but awkward boy analysing the stereotypical teenage roles in a large American high school in the style of a naturalist’s field notes. The Field Guide to the North American Teenager is Ben Philippe’s debut novel. It tells the story of Norris Kaplan, a high school student transplanted from his Montreal home when his single mother gets a teaching gig in Austin, Texas. He is forced to move to an enormous American high school, where being French-speaking, Canadian and black make him stand out in threefold undesirable ways.Norris is smart but not very good at making friends, and he engages in a sort of self-sabotaging practice of mocking every aspect of the culture of high school and adolescence, as typically portrayed in sitcoms and teen movies.Despite this, he forms relationships throughout the book.He learns a lot about people. They are not as simple and easily transformed into tropes and stereotypes as he expects. He comes to care about some of the people he meets, and has to work hard to repair damaged friendships when his snarky and tactless judgements come to light. The book deals with a lot of the issues, both light and heavy, many teens navigate in their daily lives, including friendships, crushes, school demands, future prospects for career and education, and sexuality.Norris’ character also has to struggle with being a visible minority in a particularly white community, as well as the pressures faced by being the child of immigrants, to succeed and have a “better life” than his parents. This book delves into all of these topics with curiosity and grace. As I read this book I felt real insight into a life very different from my own.Woven gracefully throughout this novel is a constant stream of humor and wit. This book is indeed laugh-out-loud funny, causing numerous stifled giggles as I read it in bed late at night.Of special note to me as I read the acknowledgments, the author came to Canada from Haiti during his own childhood and now resides in New York City after being raised in Montreal.I found it pleasing to note that the first place he lived with his family upon arrival in Quebec was Sherbrooke.Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , February 15, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: SNOW OR RAIN HIGH 3 LOW -7 SATURDAY: MIX OF SUN AND CLOUD HIGH -3 surprise What could be better on a snowy Valentine’s Day than a visit from some little people bearing flowers, cupcakes, cookies, gifts and an award? The Ken Jones Respite Program (KJC) for the intellectually and physically challenged were recipients of a heartwarming gesture made possible today by a group of youngsters from Jenny’s Daycare. The wee ones arrived with Jenny for a surprise visit this week after being invited last week by the Ken Jones Respite group to join them for their Zoo Therapy activity.“The kids in my daycare program really enjoyed the zoo therapy activity and we were so happy to be invited by the KJC clients and animators,” said Royea.“It was the kids who asked to make Valentine’s cards and so on to bring to the group to thank them,” she stated. After observing that one of the Ken Jones Respite Clients was having difficulty communicating while the group joined them for the Zoo Therapy the week before, one four year old had a special request in preparing the gifts for the Valentine’s Day visit.“I want to bring her a Teddy Bear,” she said.“You must feel sad when people have a hard time understanding you and I know she likes Teddy Bears so that will make her feel happy,” she added. The children also presented Ally Leonard, a Respite participant volunteer with an award thanking her for helping them when they go to the local library.Royea has been running a day care in Potton for many years now and she is a natural with children. Her efforts as the best craft maker and outing organizer are exceeded only by her love for Kenny Rogers; a love she has instilled in all of the children as well.Kenny Roger’s leprechauns on St.Patrick’s Day, Kenny Rogers Santa’s at Christmas and if you play your cards right, a Kenny Roger’s Valentine encouraging you to “know when to hold em.” Jenny is a gentle spirit with a passion for getting her little ones active in the community. For many years, Jenny organized fundraising initiatives to support the Montreal Children’s Hospital and she always has one of the biggest floats, filled with kids, in the Annual Potton Parade. In summer, Jenny’s Club is at maximum capacity.Jenny is loved by the kids and supported by the parents who trust her and her team in the caring of their most precious gift, their children. For the Ken Jones Respite clients and staff, the Daycare group is like a breath of fresh air showing unconditional love and kindness. When these kids smile, the day is instantly filled with sunshine. No better day to celebrate the love shared by community groups than Valentine’s Day and thanks to Jenny’s Day Care, 2019 was an extra memorable one.PHOTO COURTESY Mable pong tournaments, tug of war, and the infamous game of dodge- ball in the gym.The Devils were crowned this year’s champions in the closest competition in Galt’s history. In fact, only six points separated the first and third place positions. The current student body president, Emma-Lee Bernais, was a Devil for the first time.“Carnival really makes Galt special because we have the chance to put the things we learn in class like teamwork and time management into practice,” she said.“I was a Lizard for three years and an Armadillo last year.I guess it was good timing to be a Devil. It’s the best day of the year!” she exclaimed.Bernais has been one of the many Galt students and staff members working tirelessly to put the event together.“I was usually an Armadillo,” mentioned Galt teacher and 1999 graduate Tannia Cortes.“The school spirit, the costumes, the fun activities, and having all the students and teachers participate definitely makes Carnival the epic event it is.We have to credit our Student Activities director, Kyle Martel, for all the work he did to make this happen.Us teachers just help out as much as we can throughout the day,” she added.Kyle Martel was welcomed by the Galt community with arms wide open.“I actually went to Richmond, so working at Galt was kind of a betrayal for the rivalry,” he chuckled.“This is only my second year here but it’s going very well.Carnival is such a big part of the job and it’s unique to Galt. It’s a staple and a tradition that I hope to help maintain for the years to come.” “I started organizing Carnival back in December,” explained Martel.“I had to take care of bookings, I made sure lists went up for supervision, and I had to order and distribute the memorabilia, like the glasses and the buttons.” Martel credits the teaching staff for his success.“Nearly 100 per cent of teachers participate in Carnival. Those who are scheduled to teach are required to be here, but the vast majority is proactive and a lot of teachers who aren’t scheduled sign up for activities because at the end of the day it’s for the kids.I can organize it to the moon and back but if it wasn’t for the teachers’ leadership and participation in organizing and supervising activities, a lot of it wouldn’t be possible.” Although he has been widely praised so far, Martel admits that he has big shoes to fill.“I have to fall in the footsteps of the legendary Bob Halsall,” he said.Halsall worked at Galt as the Student Activities director for over 35 years and is still involved with coaching and various events despite his retirement.“I went for this job because I wanted to be someone like that.I want to be a role model for these kids, because that’s not something I necessarily had when I was back in high school,” mentioned Martel, who had previously worked in schools and at summer camps before applying for the position.“Working with kids is just always something I have been drawn to.I want to leave my mark in a positive manner in these kids’ lives, and I want to make sure that I’m preserving Galt traditions that are so much fun, like Carnival.” Galt Carnival Page 4 Friday , February 15, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Mansonville students against destructive decisions (SADD) and provincial police to hold cannibis information session On Friday evening, Feb.15 at 6 p.m.the Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre (CABMN) SADD group will host officers from the Quebec Provincial Police (QPP) for an information session for youth, parents and the public on the subject of cannibis at the CABMN Youth Centre located at 282 Principale in Man- sonville. The SADD youth and SADD Animator, Ethan Ball have organized the evening hoping that it will be well attended by anyone who has a question on the subject or information they would like to receive. The form of the evening allows youth and adults to add anonymous questions to the bowl already created by the SADD youth in regards to the subject. An animator will pick and read the questions anonymously and the police will provide an answer or discuss information on the question posed. This allows everyone to feel free to ask a question without being identified, making it less stressful for some who may wish to remain anonymous. The police will also be available following the session (unless they receive an emergency call), to speak with people one on one should anyone attending have a private question to ask of them.A private room to speak can be easily accessed by requesting a space with one of the youth centre animators.Officers Pascale Sauvageau and Steeve Cote will be present for the session. Both officers have visited the youth centre before and have provided animation for sessions such as this. The two are easy to speak with and both are comfortable working with youth. The session is sure to be bilingual and questions in both languages are more than welcome.“We organize these sessions for the youth and parents hoping for good participation,” explained Ethan Ball.“A good turnout always inspires us to organize more of these sessions and keeps our link to the police strong and well maintained.” For more information contact the Youth Centre at 450-292-4886 or visit the website at www.cabmn.org Mable Hastings The Scoop Officer Sauvageau's last visit found her joining in with Beyond this week, New Horizons is always trying to grow its sphere of activity by reaching out to the entire Eastern Townships community. We offer continuous enrollment, which basically means you can start a course when you need to or when it is most convenient for you.By establishing great partnerships with the local CLC’s and other community organizations, we are now able to and are in the process of developing courses in satellite centers in remote locations.Last September we started offering Franciza- tion classes in Stanstead and increased registrations there by 45 per cent this past January. This past Tuesday we started an evening French class for adults of all levels in Richmond Regional High School. The class runs from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m.and we provide free babysitting on the premises, all free of charge! New Horizons also offers a great Social Integration Program for adults with special needs. An array of special projects are running at the same time: gardening around the school, shopping for food, cooking and selling their products; making crafts and selling them to learn how to raise money; working outside at different locations (seniors home, etc) to learn new skills, The demand from the community is so great that we are in the process of expanding the program. Our Job Links service is growing and expanding by helping members of the Eng- lish-speaking community to have free access to employment services. We have also sought to partner with community organizations such as Actions Intercul- turelles and the Service aux Néo Canadiens to help integrate new comers to the area. There is a great demand for more language training and obtaining equivalencies and we could not be happier to jump in and lend a hand! New Horizons is living up to its ambitions to offer just that: New Horizons for all individuals who seek them! By Kyl Chhatwal Last November, Ontario Premier Doug Ford enraged many by scrapping plans for a French-language university in his province. In doing so, he managed the rare feat of uniting Quebe- cers on the subject of language politics.Franco-Quebecers interpreted Ford’s cuts as yet more evidence of extra-provin- cial indifference to their language.Anglo-Quebecers, meanwhile, had no trouble sympathizing with a minority being ignored by its government. Most galling for many, however, was Ford’s staggering ignorance when it came to the history of the Franco-Ontar- ian community. When asked to defend his cuts (which were ostensibly to save money), he repeatedly cited that there were just as many Chinese- and Italian- speaking Ontarians as Franco-Ontarians.So why should French get special treatment?Franco-Ontarian leaders found themselves in the surreal position of educating their premier about his province’s history and founding peoples. Some tried to teach him about the Official Languages Act.Others pointed out that French was spoken earlier than English in the territory that would eventually be called Ontario.(One irony that might’ve been highlighted was that the first European to explore the area of Ford’s future home—the city of Toronto—was a French-speaker.In the early 17th century, Étienne Brûlé famously paddled down the Humber River, which now flows about 2 km away from Ford’s house. There is even an Étienne Brûlé Park in the neighbouring ward from the one Ford represented on Toronto City Council.) Here in Quebec, we recently witnessed a similarly Fordian moment of historical illiteracy from our new Education Minister, Jean-Francois Roberge. In a move that surprised almost everyone, Roberge announced that he would exercise his unilateral powers to transfer Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds from the Lester B.Pearson School Board to the local French board, the Commission scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys.The reasoning for this Ministerial intervention seemed sound enough on paper. The CSMB has too many students and not enough classrooms.Riverdale is presently running at half capacity.A little switcheroo between English and French boards—et voila! Who could get upset about that?Indeed, so confident was Roberge that he told the Montreal Gazette hedid not- expect “any outcry” from the English community, who must surely recognize that losing a school is the most efficient solution to enrollment problems in the West Island.“I don’t think (the decision) will be poorly received,” said the Minister.“The anglophone community loses nothing… I think it is just good management of public buildings and resources to guarantee the right to education for all.” But of course, he was spectacularly wrong, wasn’t he?The anglophone community loses a great deal: namely a school that has been a vital part of Pierrefonds for over half a century.Students, teachers, board members, MNAs—all took to social media and editorial pages to express the extent to which they were “poorly receiving” the Minister’s rather heavy-handed decree. Many pointed out that less disruptive solutions could have easily been found to assist the overflowing schools of the CSMB; and indeed, some of these solutions were alreadybeing implemented. At the very least, such a potentially traumatic decision should have been preceded by months of consultation with the affected public (read: the anglophones of Pierrefonds).By why would the government bother with costly consultations, when no reasonable person could possibly disagree with them? What the whole sorry episode seems to show is the extent to which we—in the age of the populist politician—have become almost numb to outright ignorance among members of our political class.Did the Minister really believe that depriving a community of a cherished high school would not ruffle a few feathers?Does he know nothing of the history of English-speakersin Quebec, and their struggles to retaintheir rights and institutions? And if all this history is somehow new to the Minister, why is he in charge of one of the most sensitive and important portfolios in government? Is his lack of preparedness his fault therefore, or that of the premier who appointed him? When Mr.Ford blithely struck a few line items from his provincial budget last November (French university? What’s the use of that?), he got a much needed education about the people he was ostensibly elected to govern. Will there be a similar education for Quebec’s Education Minister?Roberge was a teacher himself once— but does he remember how to learn?EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , February 15, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record “I don’t think (the decision) will be poorly received,” said the Minister.“The anglophone community loses nothing… I think it is just good management of public buildings and resources to guarantee the right to education for all.” Part of Emilie Hackett's article: "Saint-François MNA ready for new challenges" (Record, Feb.13) reminds us of the topic of school boards (which) has worried many since the Coalition Avenir Québec's election. However, MNA Geneviève Hébert explained that school boards will not be abolished but transformed into education service centers.Consequently, school elections with commissioners will be eliminated. This will save a lot of money , which will be reinvested into classrooms. She added: "Students' education and school budgets will not be affected" and the 'education centers' would "give schools more autonomy." They know "their student body's reality" which will better serve "to meet their needs." Contrast that explanation with students in mind, to the scaremongering tactics and propaganda put out by the self-serv- ing Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) and the Quebec Community Groups Network (QCGN) regarding the CAQ education plan.Let's illustrate by looking at two recent events.About three weeks ago the Quebec government transferred a half-empty English school to a French school board, which had no more room to educate children. The situation is so bad, students had to remain at home.Completely forgetting that the overall responsibility of the State is to educate our youth, the QCGN twists the whole thing around by stating the action "suggests that the so-called new service centres to replace school boards will be unable to protect community interests." Imagine.QESBA President Dan Lamoureux weighs in with a press release: “This is a gross infringement on local autonomy and on the powers of duly elected school board commissioners to manage and control our school system and on our Constitutional Rights as a minority language community." Then they add that this could be a prelude to more schools being transferred .That may be.It's not the CAQ's fault parents of children who are eligible for English schooling, are choosing French schools - by the hundreds. On February 6, 2019 , Global Montreal put out a piece : " QESBA tells government school taxes bill is first step to abolishing school boards" regarding the public hearings on school taxes.Executive Director Russell Copeman states: ".the government is whittling away at the power of school boards.by lowering school taxes.and to set the rate of interest.to serve the interest of students.” Imagine. The QESBA and QCGN don't even pretend anymore.CHRIS EUSTACE MONTREAL , QC Roberge’s Riverdale decision was poorly thought out 6 Mallory, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1M 2E2 FAX: 819-821-3179 E-MAIL: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com WEBSITE: www.sherbrookerecord.com SHARON MCCULLY PUBLISHER (819) 569-9511 MATTHEW MCCULLY ASSOCIATE EDITOR (819) 569-6345 GORDON LAMBIE ASSOCIATE EDITOR (819) 569-6345 STEPHEN BLAKE CORRESP.EDITOR (819) 569-6345 SERGE GAGNON CHIEF PRESSMAN (819) 569-4856 JESSE BRYANT ADVERTISING MANAGER (450) 242-1188 DEPARTMENTS ACCOUNTING (819) 569-9511 ADVERTISING (819) 569-9525 CIRCULATION (819) 569-9528 NEWSROOM (819) 569-6345 KNOWLTON OFFICE 5B VICTORIA STREET, KNOWLTON, QUEBEC, J0E 1V0 TEL: (450) 242-1188 FAX: (450) 243-5155 PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS For print subscription rates, please call 819-569-9528 or email us at billing@sherbrookerecord.com ON-LINE SUBSCRIPTIONS QUEBEC: 1 YEAR 108.72 5.44 10.85 $ 1 2 5 .0 0 1 MONTH 9.78 0.49 0.98 $ 1 1 .2 5 Rates for out of Quebec and for other services available on request. The Record is published daily Monday to Friday.Back copies of The Record are available. The Record was founded on February 9, 1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.PM#0040007682 Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to The Record, 6 Mallory Street, Sherbrooke, QC J1M 2E2 Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA RECORD THE The QESBA and QCGN don't even pretend anymore. God is love.God is the spirit within us that brings hope, compassion and justice.God is not an old white man on a throne accusing and condemning people.COLUMNIST Friday , February 15, 2019 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Theology By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) If you are like me, you might, at first glance, think that theology is a topic reserved for bible scholars, people who have spent a lifetime studying and researching what the great minds had to say on the subject. However reflection on the nature of the creator, the questioning of the very existence of God and how or if humanity relates to this higher being is part and parcel of being human. We all question these kinds of things from time to time.We come to our own conclusions based on our life experiences and the kinds of teachings we have been exposed to.Like Jacob in the Bible, sometimes it can be like struggling with a stranger in the night. We may start out with certain beliefs about the way life works and then something happens. Our beliefs are tested.Only those that can withstand the trials and tribulations of life will hold up under the stress.Systematic theology does not ask you to place your thinking, rational mind at the door in order to adopt a set of religious beliefs and doctrines.Instead it proposes a well-rounded philosophy of life that includes the notion that an original creator has set into motion the entire created world.Proposing how we live, find meaning and interact with that creator is the purpose of all theologies. Each of us is free to accept or reject any of the belief systems so far developed.Or we can, indeed, come up with our own ideas. It is an ongoing process.Like Jacob we continue to struggle through our dark nights, testifying to the ongoing human quest for meaning and purpose. This quest, I believe, is a mark the creator prints upon our hearts, in order to draw us closer to our origin and our destination.2) It seems so long ago that I turned 18 and took my first theology course.I was not thinking of ministry then, just interested. Some of my jock friends teased me by nicknaming me “Rev”.I was not impressed at all and played football more aggressively till they gave me a new nickname, “Speedy”, but that's another story.Theology, the study of God, fascinated me then, and still does now. These days so many people use the term “God” to give them authority to do so many dreadful things.Recently when the leader to the south spoke at a prayer breakfast and talked about God's plans for America - really meaning his own plans - I shuddered. There are violent aggressive acts done in the name of God all over our planet. It might not be a bad idea to have a basic theology class for everyone, so we can all be on the same page.God is love.God is the spirit within us that brings hope, compassion and justice.God is not an old white man on a throne accusing and condemning people.I really enjoyed those early theology courses in my undergraduate days.My mind was opened up to new ideas about God.Of course my understanding has changed and grown since then.I still believe, however, that taking the time to study theology is never a bad idea.3) There is a short book about theology for lay people called “We are all Theologians" - and we are.At least, that is to say, when you think about God, you are being a theologian because theology means “thinking about God”.The problem is that we can be theologians who do this well, or theologians who do this badly. If we don’t spend much time thinking about God, or reading the work of serious theologians, or engaged in discussions with other people who think about God, we can have some unhelpful ideas that go unchallenged. One might say something like: “I prayed for my friend to get better but they died, so there must be no God.” Or: “If God wanted me to believe, then they would do something to reveal themselves to me.” The problem with both of those statements is that they start with and revolve around “me”.People can dismiss God quite easily with thoughts like this.People can also dismiss God by creating a God in their mind that is dismissible. When someone says that they don’t believe in God, Father Richard Rhor will say “Please tell me about this God you don’t believe in.” Usually, he then tells them that he doesn’t believe in that God either.A topic of such importance deserves our careful thought and study. If you don’t know where to start, find your local clergy person and ask them to recommend a couple of introductory books. It can’t hurt and it might open a world of discovery.4) If I wanted to become an ordained minister in the church, I needed to study theology. For those who don't know what theology is or what the word means, it is the study of the nature of God.(For a more in depth definition, you can always look in The Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms.) When you look at a word like theology and you think about what is means to study the nature of God, the word and task can seem daunting.Yet don't we live in a time where we over-complicate things, even God?If you want to enter the vocation of church leadership, yes then a degree in theology needs to be obtained, but anyone can study the nature of God.Anyone can ask God questions or read books about aspects of God (ex: She Who Is: The Mystery of God in Feminist Theological Discourse by Elizabeth A Johnson).Anyone can look around and see God working in the world and explore what God is doing.Even sitting around on this snowy day, I look out the window and marvel at how creation is draped in this beautiful white shroud.I marvel at how God has graced and blessed us with this beautiful image.I wonder, dream, doubt, question, and leave my heart and spirit open for God to speak to me.What does the nature of God look like, you might ask. What does God's grace, God's blessing, and God's love look like?Well perhaps looking at ourselves is the best place to start. We are reminded in Gen 1:26 that we are made in God's image, to reflect God's nature.I study the nature of God by seeing God in the other around me.I see and can study God in the natural wonders of creation, in the quiet of a mountaintop, in crackling campfires, or in the hustle and bustle of a shopping mall. How do you study God?One word, four voices - now it's your turn to reflect: Is wondering about the nature of God - a.k.a., theology - a natural feature of your existence?Special thanks to our guest columnist, the Reverend Tami Spires, who serves the United Eaton Valley Pastoral Charge. Can you guess which instalment is hers?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco is Consulting Minister to UU Estrie-Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley.Magog unveils new Industrial Park communication tools Record Staff The City of Magog unveiled new communication tools developed to promote its industrial park Wednesday night at the Mayor’s dinner, organized by the Magog-Orford Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Théatre Magog.Mayor Vicki-May Hamm took advantage of the opportunity to unveil a new website and promotional video dedicated to the promotion of the industrial park and the quality of Magog life. These tools are available at magog1055.com.The name of this sector of the city is now "Magog Industriel 1055," a name chosen to highlight Magog's geographical location at the crossroads of Highways 10 and 55."The initiative to create new communication tools is part of the Industrial Park Development Plan, which aims to stimulate investment, attract labor, and promote enthusiasm for the industrial park." said Hamm."Magog can be a strategic development engine for companies that establish themselves here.We are very well located and ready to make land available at competitive prices. With more than 70 companies now in place, our industrial park is expanding.By 2018, no fewer than six new companies have made the choice to set up shop there," she added.Magog Industrial coordinator Donald O'Hara said that in recent years, the City has completely redesigned its industrial park to attract a greater diversity of clients."From 2000 to 2012, about 5,000 jobs were lost in this sector.Today, our industrial park has more jobs to offer than there is labour,” he said.“It includes, among other things, seven international subsidiaries, SMEs, large companies, an integrated industrial training center that can offer tailor-made training, and a research center.” O'Hara says that this renewal owes its existence to various initiatives that have were taken to offer real support to businesses."Among other things, there are tax credit and subsidy programs, a unique reception desk and the development of Poirier Blvd, which gives access to industrial land with a showcase on Highway 55,” he said. The promotional video and the magog1055.com website will allow the City to pursue its seduction strategy with employers and workers. The website contains all relevant information for anyone wishing to invest in Magog. Canadian Country singer Aaron Pritchett will be performing at ‘The Gait’ at Bishops University on February 20th as part of his 2019 “Out on the Town” Tour. This is not the singer’s first trip to Quebec. He was here in 2008 at The Piggery and he recalls coming at The Ayer’s Cliff Fair.He is happy to be back.Pritchett and his crew have been on the road for almost six weeks now, playing 21 shows out of the 35 planned for this tour which will end in the Maritimes. This is a longtime away from home and his family.“Being on the road is not that bad, it is kind of fun,” said Pritchett when reached by phone for an interview on my radio show.“The team is like a family, they’re my friends and we make more friends along the way.” “Everyone in the team has a different personality and we have to find a way to get along.” He continued, saying that the whole crew has one thing in common and it is to offer a high-energy show every time.“We want fans to escape, to be in a different world, to forget about their problems and have fun.” “Out on the Town” is also the title of his new EP which was released on January 11th, 2019.The new album marks a happy time in Pritchett’s life and career.“For this release I wanted everything to be different, I wanted diversity with the songs. That was the goal when Scott Cooke, my producer, and I started the process over a year and a half ago.All the songs are different from one another” he explained about this new collection. The collection includes one song that he co-wrote titled “Ain’t Stressin,” while the other numbers are songs that were pitched to him.“There’s a lot of good songwriters out there and I listened to a lot of songs before I decided which ones I wanted to record,” he explained about putting this album together.“I go with my feelings, I go with my gut and at the same time I take a big risk.” “I have to be able to relate to a song and I make sure my fans will as well,” he stressed.“I like songs that tell a story, that is what country music is all about, the story.Picking songs can be a tiring and emotional process.” Pritchett said that the same thing applies to his songwriting, but in a different way.“It is hard to find inspiration just from my life.I am mostly inspired by other people’s stories or events I hear about on television. It can be sad or happy as long as I relate to it” he explained.Country music has always been about telling stories (except what has been coming out during the bro-country movement, which is dying now) and that means a lot to Pritchett.“That’s the reason I got into country music, those stories really appeal to people. It might have been simplified for a while with songs about wanting to party, watch bonfires sitting on the tailgate and drink beer, but the story songs are still there and this is what I want to give the fans” he explained. The first single from this collection “Worth a Shot” was a success and the current one “Better When I Do” is climbing the charts as well. After nearly 25 years in the music industry Pritchett is still going strong. With 14 career top ten singles, a gold selling smash hit, a recent string of top 10 songs, and a massive headlining national tour, Pritchett continues to evolve with the same consistency. The Vancouver native is one of Canada’s most electrifying entertainers. With multiple Canadian Country Music Association Award wins, and Juno nominations to his credit, Pritchett is faithful to his roots. The artist recently celebrated five more British Columbia Country Music Association Awards wins, which brings his career total to 38 awards.Asked about his own favourite artists, Pritchett pointed to Keith Urban because of his style, his sing along song/anthems, his personality and the way he rocks a stage. When it comes to songwriters, he said he also has a lot of admiration for Canadian Patricia Conroy.“She is beautiful inside and out and she writes with passion,” Pritchett said.“I just love collaborating with her, like we did on “Ain’t Stressin”.Pritchett is also the proud father of three sons, all musicians.“Jordan was the lead guitar of Canadian rock band Faber Drive for eight years, but now he is forming a country duo with his girlfriend Danielle,” he said.“They’re coming out with their own stuff. It’s going to be amazing.” “There’s also Brayden (22) and Mayson (16) who play together, but they are more into R&B and Jazz,” Pritchett added, “I couldn’t be more proud of my three sons.” What concert goers can expect this time around is fairly simple: “I feel like I am 25 years old so the show is high energy. We start the show with a bang and end off with a bigger bang.In between it will be a non-stop experience with songs from the past and present. We want people to sing along to every song” he said.Canadian Country singer Kira Isabella is opening the show. You can reserve your tickets by calling the box office at 819-822-9692 TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture February 15 - February 21, 2019 Country Connection Jessie Pelletier Follow us on Facebook and Twitter! sherbrookerecord @recordnewspaper When Jack Frost rears his sometimes ugly head, it can affect safety and be an issue for runners.Yet for some, it’s still not enough to deter from getting outside and navigating the natural elements as best they can.For elite athletes, treadmill running may not be a desired option, especially when they need lots of miles for marathon training. For most though, running on a treadmill is simply a matter of preference.Modern treadmills display speed and distance run, monitor your heart rate, count calories burned, and can be set to mimic hills as steep as you want.Shouldn’t people be lining up to use them?Dr.Sean Graham, a chiropractor and former CFL receiver who won a Grey Cup with the B.C.Lions in 2000, has extensive knowledge on treadmill running.Dr.Graham, still very much an athlete, also completed the 2006 and 2007 Vancouver Marathons, his best time being 3:29:57.These days he enjoys incorporating running into his weekly fitness program and shares here the benefits of his training regime and working out on the treadmill."I usually run twice a week,” he began, “For one of my runs, I will warm up with an easy pace jog for 10 minutes.I then perform high intensity interval training which consists of 30 second sprints at 90% maximum speed followed by a walk of 90 seconds.I usually perform 10 repetitions.I will also increase the incline of the treadmill and incorporate some hill running.I will then perform a 5-minute walk cool down.My second run is usually 30-45 minutes in length at an easy pace.My high intensity interval run is on the treadmill and my second run is outside." Dr.Graham has multiple reasons for liking the treadmill: "I enjoy the versatility that treadmill running affords.I can increase the incline easily by pushing a button.I can also perform some retrograde (backwards) running in a safe environment.Since the treadmill is indoors, weather is never an excuse!" He continues, "I personally find treadmill running easier than running outside.I believe this is due to smoothness of the treadmill along with the elimination of the elements such as wind and rain. When running outside, your Pro- prioception (balance) is challenged to a greater degree due to the unevenness of the running surface." I asked, can someone do well in a 5km race by running only on the treadmill?"I believe someone needs to combine both treadmill and outdoor running for optimal results. That being said, I think someone can perform quite well from just treadmill training. The other benefit from treadmill running is when someone is returning to running after an injury.A person returning from injury can use a treadmill to (add) variety to their running, incorporating incline running and retrograde (backwards) running in a safe environment. There are also a few clinics that have underwater treadmills which is an excellent way to rehab an injury in a low back environment." If you are thinking of purchasing your own treadmill, Dr.Graham recommends do your homework first. As in most products, not all treadmills are created equal and paying the most doesn’t guarantee you’ll get the best one.Consult a fitness professional before taking that next important step.www.runwithit.ca Twitter: @christineruns Instagram: runwithit_christineblanchette Run With It on YouTube - when you put them in the washer. The musky smell actually comes from mildew that grows on towels if they are too damp and don't air-dry quickly enough. To wash towels, use half the amount of laundry detergent you normally would.Too much will linger in the towels and eat away at the fibers. You can even skip using detergent once in a while; the warm water will be enough to freshen the towels and keep them clean.Do Just One Thing The Record production@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , February 15, 2019 Page 19 RATES and DEADLINES: ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICES BIRTH NOTICES, CARDS OF THANKS, IN Sunday’s horoscope on page 23 President, Bonnie Fowler, welcomed us all to our first meeting of 2019.We recited our purpose: To unite women of the congregation for the total mission of the church and to provide a medium through which they may express their loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and service.Bonnie had some quotes for the New Year: Faith makes all things possible /Hope makes all thing work.I Beauty makes all things beautiful I May you have all this as we enter the New Year. And another: We close the door to the past I Open the door to the future I Take a deep breath and step on through and start a new year.Devotions began with a quote from J.J.Hulsgen: Live not in yesterdays I Look back and you may sorrow I Live precisely for today I Look forward to tomorrow. Our first hymn was O God Our Help in Ages Past, Voices United 806.Doreen Cairns read a poem from the 2013 Friendship Book, by Iris Hesselden, beginning: Step lightly through the coming year I Whatever it may bring .and ends: Tomorrow beckons, look ahead I Step lightly through the year.Doreen read a story from Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul called No Excuse Sunday. Some of ways the unknown author thought to eliminate excuses for not attending church are: “Cots will be placed in the foyer for those who say Sunday is their only day to sleep in.Eye drops will be available for those with tired eyes from staying up too late watching TV.Steel helmets will be available for those who say the roof would cave in if they ever came to church. There will be ‘stamp our stewardship’ buttons distributed for those who feel the church is always asking for money.Hearing aids will be provided for those who can’t hear the preacher and cotton for those who can.” I read a humorous story from Chocolate for a Woman’s Soul and we sang “Praise the Lord With the Sound of Trumpets, 245 Voices United.Harriet Beecher Stowe said “When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” That’s how we ended Devotions this time.Secretary, Doreen Cairns, read the minutes of the November 2018 meeting. They were approved as read.Nine members answered the roll call.Bonnie Fowler thanked us for all our work for the Christmas dinner held in December and for a recent funeral lunch that we prepared and served.Wendy Mackay gave the Treasurer’s report. For Correspondence, there were three thank you cards, one of which was from Richard Roth- ney for the Baptist Church, thanking us for the chairs we gave to them and giving us a donation. It was reported that the annual Congregational meeting would take place on January 27, with a potluck lunch. For Cradle Roll and Sunday School, Theda reported sending 3 birthday cards with balloons. We made our annual donation to the Mission and Service Fund.January is Annual Report month.Doreen read her report for the year, saying that we served at four funeral lunches, hosted the World Day of Prayer in March, had Guest Day in May and Christmas Dinner in December when we also handed out five double gift baskets and fourteen singles.Rev.Tami Spires reported for Presbytery which is now no more. There is a Regional Council instead.Tami also reported for Church In Society and Christian Education, saying that although our Sunday School is small, we still have one.Theda Lowry reported for Church, mentioning the events held in this space throughout the year such as World Day of Prayer, Maundy Thursday and Easter Breakfast. There are new candles on the Advent Wreath and Doug Brown put the Christmas tree up for us.Theda also reported for Cradle Roll and Sunday School that she sent out or delivered 30 birthday cards complete with balloons. And for Stewards, Theda reported that we sold all 223 apple pies that we made this year.I had a small report for Devotions and for Press - it’s up to date. All Annual Reports were accepted. We agreed that we would host the.World Day of Prayer here in Sawyerville on March 1.The service comes from Slovenia this year and is based on Luke 14:15-24.More about that next time.We closed with the Mispah benediction: May the Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent, one from the other.Supper was another grand feast.Theda made the traditional turkey pie and Bonnie made sure we had coleslaw.Everyone brought something good and I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say that every bite was savoured! If East had bid one spade, finding the only winning line would have been easier. After playing a diamond to dummy’s jack, declarer must lead specifically the spade jack from the board to pin West’s singleton 10.Suppose East covers with the queen.South wins with the king, cashes the nine, crosses to the board in, say, diamonds and discards his third diamond on the spade ace.Wizardry! Now to come clean. When this deal was played in a social game, the opening lead against four hearts was .the spade 10! Page 24 Friday , February 15, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record By America’S Test Kitchen Centuries ago, focaccia began as a byproduct: When bakers needed to gauge the heat of the wood-fired oven - focac- cia stems from focolare and means “fireplace” - they would tear off a swatch of dough, flatten it, drizzle it with olive oil, and pop it into the hearth to bake as an edible oven thermometer. From there evolved countless variations on the theme - the stuffed pizza- like focaccia in Puglia and Calabria, the ring-shaped focaccia in Naples, focaccia made from rich or lean doughs, and even sweet versions. That said, it’s the dimpled, chewy, herb-topped deep-dish focaccia alla genovese that’s most fundamental. As is traditional, our recipe starts with a sponge - a mixture of flour, yeast, and water that ferments for at least 6 hours before it’s added to the bulk dough. The sponge helped develop gluten (which gives breads structure and chew), depth of flavour, and a hint of tang.Rather than knead the dough, we simply used a series of gentle folds, which developed the gluten structure further while also incorporating air for a tender interior crumb.(This method was also helpful because our dough was quite wet and therefore difficult to knead; the more hydrated a bread dough, the more open and bubbly its crumb - a characteristic we were looking for in focaccia - because steam bubbles form and expand more readily.) Fruity olive oil is a requisite ingredient, but when we added it straight to the dough, it turned the bread dense and cakelike.Instead, we baked the bread in cake pans coated with a couple tablespoons of oil.Be sure to reduce the temperature immediately after putting the loaves in the oven.ROSEMARY FOCACCIA Servings: 12-16 (Makes two 9-inch round loaves) Start to finish: 4 1/2 hours plus 6 hours fermenting time Sponge: 1/2 cup (2 1/2 ounces) all-purpose flour 1/3 cup water, room temperature 1/4 teaspoon instant or rapid-rise yeast Dough: 2 1/2 cups (12 1/2 ounces) all-purpose flour 1 1/4 cups water, room temperature 1 teaspoon instant or rapid-rise yeast Kosher salt 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary For the sponge: Stir all ingredients in large bowl with wooden spoon until well combined.Cover tightly with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature until sponge has risen and begins to collapse, about 6 hours (sponge can sit at room temperature for up to 24 hours). For the dough: Stir flour, water, and yeast into sponge with wooden spoon until well combined.Cover bowl tightly with plastic and let dough rest for 15 minutes.Stir 2 teaspoons salt into dough with wooden spoon until thoroughly incorporated, about 1 minute.Cover bowl tightly with plastic and let dough rest for 30 minutes.Using greased bowl scraper (or rubber spatula), fold dough over itself by gently lifting and folding edge of dough toward middle.Turn bowl 45 degrees and fold dough again; repeat turning bowl and folding dough 6 more times (total of 8 folds).Cover tightly with plastic and let rise for 30 minutes.Repeat folding and rising.Fold dough again, then cover bowl tightly with plastic and let dough rise until nearly doubled in size, 30 minutes to 1 hour. One hour before baking, adjust oven rack to upper-middle position, place baking stone on rack, and heat oven to 500 F.Coat two 9-inch round cake pans with 2 tablespoons oil each.Sprinkle each pan with 1/2 teaspoon salt.Transfer dough to lightly floured counter and dust top with flour.Divide dough in half and cover loosely with greased plastic.Working with 1 piece of dough at a time (keep remaining piece covered), shape into 5-inch round by gently tucking under edges.Place dough rounds seam side up in prepared pans, coat bottoms and sides with oil, then flip rounds over.Cover loosely with greased plastic and let dough rest for 5 minutes.Using your fingertips, gently press each dough round into corners of pan, taking care not to tear dough.(If dough resists stretching, let it relax for 5 to 10 minutes before trying to stretch it again.) Using fork, poke surface of dough 25 to 30 times, popping any large bubbles.Sprinkle 1 tablespoon rosemary evenly over top of each loaf, cover loosely with greased plastic, and let dough rest until slightly bubbly, about 10 minutes.Place pans on baking stone and reduce oven temperature to 450 F.Bake until tops are golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes, rotating pans halfway through baking.Let loaves cool in pans for 5 minutes.Remove loaves from pans and transfer to wire rack.Brush tops with any oil remaining in pans and let cool for 30 minutes.Serve warm or at room temperature.Nutrition information per serving: 158 calories; 45 calories from fat; 5 g fat (1 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 0 mg cholesterol; 81 mg sodium; 24 g carbohydrate; 1 g fiber; 0 g sugar; 3 g protein. For more recipes, cooking tips and ingredient and product reviews, visit https://www.americastestkitchen.com.Find more recipes like Rosemary Focaccia in “Tasting Italy .” (The Associated Press) Try this dimpled, chewy, herb topped deep dish focaccia "]
