another is science fiction and the creation of alternate universes, such as in The Dark Tower series.Another aspect I enjoy, a feature of many of King’s later books, is his use of children as his main characters, leading to immediate empathy and liking for the character. You read Stephen King because at times you like to go to bed needing to leave the light on: is there something under the bed or in the closet?” According to Gerry, one of King’s main themes is how everyday life can be influenced—and completely altered—by the introduction of the unexplainable. He skillfully uses the concept of the un- killable (or undead), to introduce the conflict between good and evil, life and death, and the triumph we experience when the unexpected hero or heroine saves us from the unspeakable horrors that lie beyond our comprehension. This novel is the King boys’ description of the interplay between men and women, gender power and relationships.Set in a small prison town in Appalachia called Dooling (most of King’s novels are set in Maine, where King still lives), the main employer is the Dooling Correctional Facility for Women. We’re quickly introduced to some of the main characters in Chapter 1: inmates Jeanette Sor- ley and Ree Dempster, Dr.Clinton Norcross, prison psychiatrist, his wife Sheriff Lila Norcross, and their 16 year old son Jared. We get a sense that almost all of the characters have experienced complicated lives that have impacted their ability to relate to others. As we read the novel we realize that Stephen and Owen King have taken on the role of explaining to men why relationships with women are often dominated by power struggles and in particular, violence. The characters’ stories reflect the struggles that women have always encountered related to finding their place in a world where force and domination are a part of the fabric of daily life, sometimes overt, sometimes hidden, but always present. In the midst of these troubled relationships, the authors introduce the element of the supernatural, the unexplainable, and the terrifying, manifested in the appearance of a woman aged about 30, known to the police as Evie Black. She is found naked at the scene of a horrific crime; it seems she has murdered two drug dealers in their makeshift meth lab.She is apprehended by the sheriff and taken to Dooling prison to be held in custody. The story now becomes more complicated, as the complexities of the relationships between the prison guards, inmates and townspeople unfold. The characters are masterfully depicted, as we begin to see how the authors view the everyday relationships that exist in Dooling; this could be a story in and of itself, apart from the appearance of the mysterious Evie Black. What she brings to the story is classic Stephen King: where does she come from? Why is she here? Why does she seem to have mysterious powers, such as curing herself of serious wounds and knowing what people are thinking?Besides her being a murderer, there are many other factors that cause people to be happy that she is locked in a cell. What becomes highly problematic and absolutely terrifying is the fact that when women go to sleep they are immediately enveloped in a co- coon-like structure that literally grows out their bodies.Within a relatively short period of time, women, across the planet, are going to sleep and developing this cocoon, yet they are still alive.Needless to say, the female inmates are now falling asleep inside cocoons.Suspicion naturally falls on Evie: is this of her making? What powers does she have?We go back and forth with characters that work in the prison and live in the town. Some particularly unsavory characters begin to appear. One family in particular, the Grearies, is used to show us how the propensity for male violence can destroy and manipulate what is the most fundamental of all human relationships, the family.Without exception, the women in the correctional institute are there in whole or in part because of male intolerance and violence. What happens to the men in Dooling (and in the rest of the world) when eventually all but 2 or 3 women are encased in cocoons?A central question is, “What would men do if women were no longer there?” What the Kings suggest is that the male reflex to become violent would win out; Evie, clearly the cause of “the sleeping beauties”, must be killed or captured.Eventually, the Dooling women end up an alternate universe, finding themselves very happy without the male presence, and Evie offers them the alternative of waking up, or remaining in their alternate, peaceful universe.Whether or not this venture into shared authorship lives up to the reader’s expectation is a matter of opinion. The storytelling is effective, but where we see that this is not a classic King novel is in the ending, which is too pat.We never get an answer as to who Evie is, or what happens to her.King père et fils seem to have run out of steam at the end, leaving the reader feeling dissatisfied.I would recommend it as a good read up until the simplistic ending, a commentary on contemporary antifeminist and violent society, where the quick- draw approach is used to solve all problems.Like most of King’s books, it can be read on many different levels.Reviewed by Melanie and Gerry Cutting Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , March 15, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: RAIN HIGH 9 LOW 2 SATURDAY: RAIN OR FLURRIES HIGH 1 LOW -8 SUNDAY: CLOUDY WITH SUNNY BREAKS HIGH -5 LOW -13 MONDAY: MIX OF SUN AND CLOUDS HIGH -5 LOW -14 TUESDAY SUNNY HIGH 1 LOW -10 The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week.Wherever you are.Access the full edition of the Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and 30 days of archives.Renew or order a new 12- month print subscription and get a 12-month online subscription for an additional $5 or purchase the online edition only for $82.21.Record subscription rates (includes Quebec taxes) For print subscription rates, please call 819-569-9528 or email us at billing@sherbrookerecord.com 12 month web only: $125.00 1 month web only: $11.25 Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3: 1.Visit the Record website: www.sherbrookerecord.com 2.Click e-edition.3.Complete the form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.GO O D RE A D S Lennoxville library Sleeping Beauties By Stephen King and Owen King Friday , March 15, 2019 Page 3 Morin said she is satisfied with Netflix's decision.“Yes, there was a delay, but I think in the end, what's more important for me, is that we have a solution to this situation we felt was important to settle,'' she said in an interview.LOCAL NEWS The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Stephane Faucher Real Estate Broker 819-620-8487 sfaucher@sutton.com Groupe Sutton – Immobilier Estrie 819-820-0777 Want to sell?Going to a seniors’ residence or apartment?Discouraged with all the stuff you have to get rid of?I know how to help! Increased accessibility for Coaticook MRC’s mobility-impaired Record Staff Compton-Stanstead MP and Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau announced federal funding for five projects designed to increase access for people living with a handicap. The projects included increased access to municipal services, cultural and athletic facilities in the municipalities of Coaticook, Barnston West , Lingwick and Compton.Citizens with reduced mobility will be able to take advantage of the swimming pool in the Desjardins Sports Center thanks to the addition of a reserved parking space and an automatic door opening device.People living with a disability will also be able to access the floors of the Coaticook Arts Building, the Rozinski Fine Arts Center in Barnston West, and the Compton Municipal Library with an elevator. In a similar vein, access to the Township of Lingwick's municipal center will be improved."All these projects will have a direct impact on the life of those with reduced mobility,” Bibeau said.“I wish to recognize and highlight the contribution and involvement of these organizations," she said, while announcing the federal contribution of $141,616 through the Accessibility Fund.Minister Bibeau also took advantage of the occasion to announce the renewal of a $10,000 annual grant offered to the Pavillon des arts et de la culture through the Professional Arts Festivals and Performing Arts Presenters Series - Canada Arts Presentation Fund. This financial support allows the regional broadcaster to present artistic and culturally diversified programming.(COURTESY MARIE-CLAUDE BIBEAU) MP Marie-Claude Bibeau announced funding to increase accessibility in the Coaticook MRC.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 needed, was a dog.“A dog doesn’t judge you, it gives you lots of love,” she said.“There are a number of positive psychological benefits.” The two worked together to prepare a proposal and make a plan for how adopting a dog would benefit the Mon Shack community, and presented it to the board for approval.Josée Parent, the founder and Executive Director of Mon Shack, said that even though Brownie is not formally trained as a therapy dog, she has already seen how good a fit Brownie is in the living space.“Brownie is now a member of the Mon Shack family,” she said, noting that dogs offer a genuine relationship without pretense or judgement.Manon Duval, of the SPA, explained that the organization came to the centre and held a workshop on the proper care of the dog at Mon Shack prior to the adoption being finalized.“They showed that they could follow directions and that they were serious in their mission to find a dog that suited their needs,” Duval said.“The SPA is very proud to have participated in this unique project.” Although both Brownie and his new neighbors seem to be quite happy with their new living arrangement, Parent said that there is still a detail she is hoping to sort out with some help from the public.Given the fact that the Mon Shack relies completely on donor support in order to operate, the executive director said that the organization is on the lookout for a local veterinarian who would be interested in taking Brownie on as a patient pro bono.“He is in good health,” she clarified, simply pointing out that, when some need does come up, a helping hand would be appreciated.Meet Brownie Net?ix says Lac Megantic footage will be removed from 'Bird Box' movie By Melanie Marquis THE CANADIAN PRESS After initially refusing, Netflix has agreed to remove images of the 2013 Lac-Megantic disaster from its blockbuster film, “Bird Box.'' “Netflix and the filmmakers of 'Bird Box' have decided to replace the clip,'' a spokesman for the streaming company said in an email to The Canadian Press.“We're sorry for any pain caused to the Lac-Megantic community.'' People in the Quebec town and across the province were shocked after learning in January that footage from the derailment and explosion that killed 47 people was used in the drama starring Sandra Bullock.Demands that the brief scene be removed came from politicians at all levels, including Lac-Megantic Mayor Julie Morin.Morin said she is satisfied with Netflix's decision.“Yes, there was a delay, but I think in the end, what's more important for me, is that we have a solution to this situation we felt was important to settle,'' she said in an interview.Quebec Culture Minister Nathalie Roy wrote to the company Jan.18 calling for it to take out footage of the burning town. The company apologized and promised to do better, but until now it had refused to edit the film.Three months later, Netflix has decided to change course.Morin said the film industry needs to reconsider its use of stock footage.“I think it's important for the industry to reflect on this,'' she said in an interview.“It appears that has happened in this case.'' In a written statement, Roy said “the gesture was long sought by Quebecers.'' The House of Commons adopted a motion Jan.29 demanding Netflix remove the images and compensate the town. The NDP's Pierre Nantel introduced the motion with the support of Conservative MP Luc Berthold.Nantel said Thursday that the incident shows it is time for streaming services to be subject to “our laws and the jurisdiction of the CRTC.'' Federal Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said he is pleased that Netflix has changed its tune.“My heart goes out to the people of Lac-Megantic.I perfectly understand their dismay at the use of footage of the tragedy,'' he said in an emailed statement.“The company has taken the good decision by stepping back and removing this footage from its movie.'' The Canadian Press learned that the footage will be removed from the film within the next two weeks.Producers of the Netflix science fiction series “Travelers,'' which used footage of the derailment to depict a nuclear attack, agreed in January to remove it from the episode in question. Page 4 Friday , March 15, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Meet your neighbour: Judith Munger, librarian extraordinaire! By Emilie Hackett Special to the Record Judith Munger took a librarian position at Alexander Galt in 2006 and knew she would have a lot on her plate.Giving herself five years to revamp the outdated and under-used library and give it a new modern feel, Munger has more than achieved her goal. The Galt library has become a hot spot where any and all students can sit down, chat, work, eat, read, and feel at home.Munger, who studied in literature, previously worked at the Centre d’Arts Orford as a registrar when she heard about the job.“I knew that the library was a place where I could make a meaningful change. What we have now is a model adapted to students of the 21st century. We can no longer have libraries that are completely silent. With this decade’s new technology, the students need areas where they can use it,” she said.“This library has many vocations,” she remarked.“Next week, we’ll be setting up for Model Parliament, and there will be a public speaking contest. There will also be a science career workshop, where 150 students will attend a lecture. There are always so many activities happening at the library, and that’s not even counting all the students that come here every day to work and read during breaks.” One of Munger’s main goals was to create distinct zones to cater to everyone’s needs.“We have to acknowledge that the home life is not always easy for some.Sometimes, school becomes a safe space.I want to make sure that I can take care of those kids, comfort them, and give them a place where they can relax,” she mentioned.“We have a bistro area with many chairs and tables, microwaves, and two herbal tea dispensers. We also provide actual cutlery and cups, which is a nice green initiative. We have a no-talking zone, and then many other areas where students can discuss and do work.” “We’re very grateful to the Odd Fellows of Waterville, because they give us around $70 a month which helps us pay for our herbal tea collection. They adopted our bistro project last year and they have been so helpful. It couldn’t happen without sponsors like them because we don’t get money from the school or the school board for our projects. We also have the microwaves thanks to the Rotary Club, and the bistro’s furniture thanks to the Tillotson Foundation,” elaborated Munger.Working alongside Dale Davidson at the library, she wishes to provide a space where all students feel welcome.“This place is a zone of respect.Dale and I push that firmly. We have a zero-toler- ance policy for disrespect and our students know it,” assured Munger.Sitting at a coffee table in the library’s bistro area, she pointed to the rainbow bracelet she always wears on her wrist.“This bracelet means that I celebrate diversity.Last year, Dale and I distributed over 400 bracelets to the students, but we took the time to make it a personal act.We spoke with every person we gave the bracelets to, and told them that by wearing it, they became ambassadors of respect,” she explained.“The library is really a place where there should be no taboos, because students should be able to find what they’re looking for and be able to talk about what matters to them.” “Our LGBTQ books are clearly identified with a rainbow flag. They aren’t discreet, and they aren’t hidden in a special section.People in the LGBTQ are very much part of our society and it’s important to integrate them as we would anyone else,” added Munger.“This extends to literature. They have a right to recognize themselves among novels of all genres. We also know that people who aren’t part of that community can be curious and want to educate themselves about the topic, so this is a good way to learn more. When I order books, I make sure to have a good amount of LGBTQ works, either fiction or non-fiction, and in French and English.Communication is so important in these issues and exposure can only help.” One step inside the library and one can immediately notice Munger’s creativity.“I really like to make book displays at the entrance according to a relevant theme.March is the Canadian Nutrition Month, so I’ve set up a display about nutrition that has cooking books, for example.Next week, I’ll be having a food tasting during the lunch hour to celebrate the new Canadian food guide, where I’ll explore legumes, different flours, protein alternatives, and more.I’m also focusing on food security, production costs, and local farming,” she mentioned.Munger is always on the look out for a new project, and she is now set on the aspect of mindfulness.“I’m hoping that I will be getting money from a sponsor soon.If I’m lucky, I want to buy five rocking chairs for the library, as well as five pairs of high-quality headphones that block out outside sounds.I’ve been working on playlists that promote mindfulness and they would be available for students, with relaxing nature sounds,” she described.“The end of the school year is approaching, and many students develop anxiety and insomnia, for example, some experience great stress. This would allow for students to relax and have a moment for themselves.I also have iPod Shuffles at the library, and I would like to upload those playlists to them, and they could be lent out to students.” One of her proudest accomplishments is the work she did for Indigenous People’s Awareness Month in September.“We had different activities every day, like guest speakers, food tastings, documentary showings, discussion circles, and more,” she noted.“We also partnered with Bishop’s University’s Indigenous Studies class, and the students came here to Galt to meet with one of our speakers, Mrs.Ena Greyeyes, a Cree elder who now lives in North Hatley. She spent the afternoon with us and spoke about what it means to survive the residential school system. We were also joined by Mrs.Christine Siouï- Wawanoloath, an Abenaki speaker, Quentin Condo, a Mi’kmaq rapper, Michel Noël, a youth author of Algonquin descent, and the Musée des Abé- nakis.” “All our guests were of Indigenous descent, and that was important to us.We provided a platform, but it was not our story to tell,” Munger pleaded.“It was crucial that it came from them, because we did not want to appropriate their reality. They’re all fantastic people and it was a rewarding and touching experience. We wanted to remedy the lack in today’s history books.Although we aren’t directly responsible for what happened, it’s our responsibility to educate our future generations about this cultural genocide.” Although a variety of activities were offered in September, Munger hopes that students keep being curious about Indigenous cultures.“2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages so we want to expose our students to them.To lose one’s language is to lose one’s roots, the link to the culture, to the ancestors.I’ve bought many grammar books and bilingual books. We have books that are in French and Algonquin, in Mohawk and English, and English and Inuktitut, which really enriches our library,” she added.“I’m glad because this library respects my vision of what a modern library should be like.Dale and I are lucky to be a man and a woman working here.A male librarian in a school is quite rare to start with, but Dale also represents a masculine personality that’s non-threat- ening and a lot of our boys feel comfortable to share with him.And then there’s me! I’m basically the grandma,” she exclaimed, chuckling.“He and I make a really good team.I have a lot of project ideas, but Dale helps them come to life.He does a lot of manual work around here. He’s painted the walls and built some chairs and some displays.” “Getting the library to where it is today was hard work,” Munger admitted.“I had to clean up, make myself known by the teachers and help them out with their reading lists, and I had to get to know the students. That’s why we have books ranging from hunting and fishing, to cooking, to Wrestlemania, to mangas.I had to earn people’s trust.Everyone feels at home here because we take care of people.” For Munger, every bit makes a difference.“At the bottom of my heart, I know that no little gesture gets lost, because they motivate people to do nice gestures after that.I think people were a bit scared at first, because change is scary!” she insisted.“But I’m a bulldozer and I’m going to keep going forward.I won’t back out.” Overall, it has been an incredible journey for Munger.“I’ll be retiring soon, so I hope to find someone who will want to take over. This job description is not like your traditional librarian position.Dale and I focus on building relationships with everyone who walks through these doors, and we get to know these kids, talk to them, and accept them as they are.We sometimes play many roles, like a confidant, or a parent, or a friend. We provide security and comfort; we just want what’s best for these kids,” she maintained.EMILIE HACKETT Judith Munger, Alexander Galt’s librarian, poses next to the display she set up for Nutrition Month. CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 going to work,” explained community member Barbara Heath, who attended the meeting.According to Heath, over 60 people attended the meeting. The CIBC representatives explained how accounts will be transferred when the Stanstead branch closes on June 13, and what options and services are available online or by travelling to Ayer’s Cliff, the closest branch.“Technology is good.I use it.I like it, but there are things I don’t want to do that way,” Heath said. She added that being a border town, there are a number of businesses that have Canadian and US transactions to process.“You have to do that with a teller,” she said.Of greater concern, Heath pointed out, is the number of seniors in the area who bank with the CIBC.Not all have computers, and not all have the means to drive to Ayer’s Cliff for service, she explained.“Our point is what about the next town?” Quoting the CIBC website, which calls itself a ‘client focused institution’, Heath said she and others at the meeting expected more from the bank representatives than a sorry, the decision has been made.A petition circulated in town asked the bank to consider two options; to either keep the branch open with reduced hours (one or two days per week), or install an ATM somewhere in town. The CIBC representatives reiterated that the branch closure was not negotiable, and cited low ATM use as a justification for not leaving a machine in town.According to Heath, the CIBC representatives had no interest in the petition, saying they had had been made aware that it was circulating. The refusal to acknowledge the petition added insult to injury.“If their approach had been different- that’s a better message than ‘we’ve already seen it,” commented Heath.“That’s 466 signatures in less than 24 hours,” she said, no small feat for a town the size of Stanstead.“They should pay a little more attention.” Heath said community members would continue circulating the petition.“We want to stop it or at least slow it down from happening to another community,” Heath said.“We will explore all avenues.” During the meeting, concerns were raised about how long the Ayer’s Cliff branch would survive.Heath said that when pressed for an answer, the reply from the reps was maybe two years.“It is affecting the whole town,” commented Kathy Lusty Curtis, another area resident who attended the meeting.“Losing a bank when you have already lost so much is very difficult,” she said.“Many of our seniors that live both at home and the Manoir have no idea how to use a computer and have no way of getting to Ayer’s cliff,” Curtis said, “but the people heading the meeting did not seem to want to hear that.” Case in point, Beebe resident and senior Dorothy Blake.“I was upset. It happened all of a sudden,” she said.Blake no longer drives, and doesn’t have a computer or a cell phone. What she does have, as of January 2019, is an account at the Caisse Desjardins, the last bank standing in the area. While friends of hers plan to stay with CIBC, Blake said she heard plenty of moans and groans from other customers at the bank the day the notice went up that the branch was closing. She doubts she is the only client to have jumped ship.“I’m sure there are a lot,” she commented.“If I got a $25 cheque I don’t drive. To get to Ayer’s Cliff to get it cashed it would cost around $20,” Blake said.“It was there for over 60 years, the same building,” Blake remembered.“We don’t have very much here. One little mom and pop store here in Beebe,” she said.“It’s not easy for an older person with no car, to have to depend on someone to bring you,” she said, explaining her decision to change banks. Her first order of business when she went to her new bank was to ask the teller if they plan to close in the near future.According to Blake, the response was “with all these people coming up from the CIBC, probably not soon.” The Record contacted the CIBC head office for comment regarding the closure of the Stanstead branch, asking the following questions: - Based on reactions from the citizens who attended the (March 12) meeting, is CIBC willing to explore offering limited services to clients in Stanstead?- Is CIBC willing to explore installing an ATM somewhere in the municipality for clients?- Is CIBC considering the closure of the Ayer's Cliff branch in two years?- Does CIBC acknowledge the receipt of a petition containing 466 signatures from citizens in the municipality of Stanstead? The communications representative for the bank replied with the following statement: “CIBC held a Community Information Meeting in Stanstead on March 12 with representatives from infrastructures of the future Engineered Landfill Site.107 Maine Central Road, Bury Stanstead CIBC closing By J.P.Lewis Associate Professor, History and Politics, University of New Brunswick Social media has made every day a huge news day.Responses to political developments are regularly framed in apocalyptic turns. It is not only a challenge to determine whether news is real or fake; all news is immediately contextualized as the 1927 Yankees of bombshells. The Earth is scorched, the end is near, each new revelation has shades of Watergate. The SNC-Lavalin saga is now more than a month old.The story has dominated the Canadian national news cycle for weeks; television political panels have been convened at a rate not seen since the days of Nigel Wright and Mike Duffy.Public opinion polls have started to reveal the impact of the scandal on voting intentions. And because of the breathless coverage of the political fallout, it’s easy to overlook the resignations of Jody Wilson- Raybould and Jane Philpott as a truly historic cabinet event.Based on one measure — the volume and timing of ministerial resignations — 2019 has been a historic year in Canadian federal cabinet governance.Yes, only two people resigned, but ministerial resignations on principle, policy or political strategy are rare.Multiple ministerial resignations on principle, policy or political strategy are unicorns.Few cabinet resignations over disagreements Since Confederation, almost 700 people have served in federal cabinet — only 26, or around four per cent, have resigned over disagreements with the government. This type of resignation has become even rarer over time — Stephen Harper only had one, Paul Martin had one, Jean Chretien endured no resignations of this type and Brian Mulroney experienced two, most notably Lucien Bouchard’s departure over the Meech Lake accord, which led to the creation of the Bloc Québecois.Bouchard’s case highlights that many of the 26 resignations have been, like the current controversy, steeped in political drama and intrigue.Pierre Trudeau lost a minister who tried to form his own party called Action Canada. The Wilson-Raybould/Philpott resignations are historic because it is only the fourth time in Canadian history that a prime minister has lost multiple ministers as the result of a single decision or incident.Bowell is seen in this 1896 photo. The first time is a favourite for Canadian history buffs.Short-serving prime minister Mackenzie Bowell described the seven ministers who resigned his cabinet in 1896 over their loss of confidence in Bowell as a “nest of traitors.” He was ultimately forced out of office over Catholic school rights in Manitoba. The second time multiple ministers resigned in response to the same incident occurred in the Mackenzie King government during the 1944 conscription crisis.King’s decision-making on sending soldiers overseas led to the resignation of two ministers on opposite sides of the conscription debate, Chubby Power and James Ralston, although historians suggest the pro-conscription Ral- ston was forced to quit. The third time, in February 1963 under Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, George Hees, Pierre Sevigny and Douglas Harkness resigned over the span of a week in response to the government’s position on housing nuclear missiles as part of NORAD.Shows how cabinet works Lumping in the 2019 cabinet resignations with Bowell, King and Diefenbaker may be notable in a trivial sense, but the incident has also provided ample information on how cabinet works, leading to many substantive debates. In the last month, commentary has focused on how the media covers female ministers, the workings of cabinet and the history of women leaving Canadian cabinets. When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in front of Rideau Hall in 2015 that “government by cabinet is back” he brought an unusual amount of attention to his government. His cabinet was much smaller than most modern federal cabinets, and was the most gender and racially diverse in Canadian history.Trudeau promised not only changes at a descriptive level, but also operational — ministers would be more empowered than in previous cabinets during an era of increasing centralization of power in the Prime Minister’s Office. The high expectations have only proved to shine a brighter light on the current cabinet turmoil.Across all levels of government in Canada, ministerial resignations on the basis of political, policy or principled disagreement with the government are unusual and remarkable (we should not forget the recent and incredible case of five provincial ministers resigning in Manitoba under Premier Greg Selinger).A different type of cabinet But as experts have noted, Trudeau’s is a different type of cabinet This means that while we should understand these resignations as historic, they could also do something entirely new: They could challenge the stubborn trends of strict cabinet solidarity and power struggles behind closed doors.Due to cabinet confidentiality and ministerial oaths of secrecy, the institution of cabinet is one of the country’s most difficult to understand. It can take years, and after-the-fact insiders’ accounts, to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of a powerful institution. While the Wilson-Raybould/Philpott resignations are historic by the numbers, they may also prove historic in creating a new faith in a previously elite and closed decision-making body that possesses a tremendous influence over the lives of Canadians. This is a corrected version of a story originally published on March 12, 2019.The earlier story said Diefenbaker lost one minister over the nuclear weapons issue, but he in fact lost three.J.P.Lewis does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit After all the snow- shoveling, slip-sliding and balancing on icy pathways, watching the degrees go down, then up and down again - so ready for the muddy patches, melting sidewalks and dripping icicles.I'm ready for blossoming.Turning springward, something begins to thaw in me.As I begin planning for next month's services of Easter and Earth Day, my spirit is singing: "In the bulb there is a flower, in the seed an apple tree…" All that lies waiting beneath the white crusted landscape, ready to appear in due time.Keeping spring in my heart as I wrestle with the last stages of winter is always a gift of hope, a miracle earth offers faithfully every year. The world will soon be green again. And it never gets old.The exuberance of green shoots rising out of the cold thawing ground, bursting into the light in all their wild colours and shapes - just thinking about the blossoming to come brightens these last cold snowy days.Emerson is quoted as saying that the earth laughs in flowers.I can't help smiling, thinking of the flower show to come. This month seed catalogs begin to arrive in the mail. The garlic shoots in planters on the window sill grow taller by the day. After the long winter, it still seems to happen overnight. One of these days without knowing it, we'll see the last snowfall of the season. The white cover will disappear and green will rise up and sprint across the land.Lacy leaves will crown again the heads of trees, and gardens will wake up as if from a long sleep. For now, Lent gives us a bit of transition time to contemplate life's annual "victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see." Wait for it and be ready.Soon bulbs and seeds hidden from sight will remember what to do.And so will we! We'll burst forth rejoicing like we do every year.2) Last weekend we all set our clocks ahead one hour.In most winters this is a sign that spring is on the way.The extra hour of daylight is a promise of hope.As I look out my window and see fresh snow coming down again, that hope seems but a remote future possibility. Our choice of the word 'Blossoming” this week is indeed an optimistic one.It does evoke, however, images of spring flowers and warm sunny days. One of my favourite memories of childhood was wandering through the woods near our house picking mayflowers with my Mom.A blossoming flower is a beautiful part of creation. My sister is a gardener who grows the most amazing flower beds, both for herself, and also for her clients. She wins awards every summer for her flower displays. She is an artist with a gift.My sister is the hardest working person I know; she spends hours and hours of patient repetitive tasks in order for her flowers to blossom so beautifully. This is not a coincidence.I spend a lot of time working with children and teens. My greatest moments of satisfaction over many years have come from watching them grow and develop. When a young actor I taught takes the stage in a musical or a play, or when a child I welcomed to summer camp at age eight has become a wonderful counselor, or when a teenager from a Youth group is ordained into ministry, I have a great sense of pride as their life blossoms.I know that behind the blossoming of those beautiful young flowers was a lot of hard work.3) It has been a long winter.Half way into March we are still shoveling snow and navigating icy sidewalks.Certainly, there is beauty, but we long for flowers.Yesterday, I heard that a crocus has blossomed, about a ten-minute drive outside of town.It pokes out through the snow: bright yellow and full of hope.Soon, the daffodils will follow, and then the tulips. Before we know it we will be surrounded by blossoming. The lessons of winter (be careful, be quiet) will be cast aside for the lessons of spring. It will be time for a bit of recklessness. It will be a time for joy.The bulbs that we planted last fall will burst into colour, holding nothing back, even if they bloom for only a few days.Blossoming can happen in our own lives at any time. There may be some ideas that sit dormant and buried within you, that long to be transformed.“I can’t do this until that happens.” Fill in your own blanks. The crocuses don’t wait.Surrounded by snow, they blossom now. What are you waiting for?One word, three of the four voices - and now it's time for your thoughts: What is blossoming in you as you wait for spring to arrive?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco is Consulting Minister to UU Estrie-Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley. Our choice of the word 'Blossoming” this week is indeed an optimistic one.It does evoke, however, images of spring flowers and warm sunny days.COLUMNIST Friday , March 15, 2019 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Blossoming Quebec Issime looking for an alien Record Staff Québec Issime is looking for a young artist between the ages of 8 and 14 to perform "L’Air de l’extraterrestre", which will be part of a tribute- concert of the work of Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon. The selected person will be part of the show "Québec Issime chante Starmania," which will be presented, for a second summer season, from July 10 to August 17 at Place Nikitotek in downtown Sherbrooke.Candidates will be required to audition accompanied by the original Québec Issime soundtrack. This soundtrack, lyrics, and registration form can be found on the official Québec Issime website at www.quebecissime.net under the "Auditions" tab on the home page. The auditions will take place on Saturday, March 16, from 1 p.m.to 6 p.m.at the Jean-Besré Center for the Performing Arts, 250 Dépôt Street in Sherbrooke.Registration will be made the same day starting at noon.Applicants should have their printed form ready.Auditions will be filmed for archival purposes.Applicants are encouraged to bring a snack and a bottle of water for a possible waiting period. Brome Fairgrounds will host its first edition of the “Festival New Country Brome” this Summer from July 26 to 28.The new event organized by Pierre Poulin and Shantal Bourdelais will meet the needs of many attendees and fans of the musical genre. In the last 15 years, we have seen the lists of festivals get longer and longer. These are events that please and draw country music fans, particularly the ones who have campers, RV’s and Fifth wheels.People just love being able to park their vehicles somewhere for the whole weekend, while they are entertained all day and all night without having to go anywhere. Most festivals held in the province of Quebec showcase francophone artists who have careers here in Quebec. The fact that this musical genre is very festive and has a huge base of fans is the reason why the organizers have opted for it.Poulin and Bordelais who met while planning Montreal’s 375th anniversary, came up with the idea of creating an event that would bring people together. After visiting many sites available everywhere in Quebec, they decided that Brome Fairgrounds offered the ideal setting, to create the village they had envisioned, a place where music fans would spend a happy weekend. The “Festival New Country Brome” will differ in the fact that their star-stud- ded lineup will include well-known Canadian artists such as Paul Brandt, The Washboard Union, Tebey, Chase Rice, Meghan Patrick, Aaron Goodvin, as well as up-and-comers like Sara Dufour and Amélie Hall. These artists will perform on one of the three Festival stages.Matt Lang, the new country star has been chosen as the event's spokesperson and he will perform as well.Activities for everyone are planned, including volleyball, petanque and water mats. The Saloon will welcome DJs and music groups starting at noon, which is sure to please county line dancing fans. The place will be set up as a small village with food booths, food trucks as well as vendor booths for those who want to buy some local products or souvenirs of the event. There will be places reserved for camping and RVing.Campers will not be able to choose their campsite. They are allocated on a first come, first served basis .Campers must purchase a camping pass in addition to a festival pass.Campsites are not serviced (no water or electricity); however, there will be shower facilities nearby and drinking water is available for purchase. The camping pass is good for two people per tent and includes a parking spot for one vehicle.Pads are not serviced (no water, electrical, or sewer hook-ups); the RVing pass is good for four people per vehicle and includes a parking spot for one car or truck.Stalls for horses will also be available if you want to bring your horse to the festival for the weekend.Weekend pass holders can also get a stable for their horse for three nights. There will be two group rides a day on the Brome trails. These trail rides are led by a guide and last about two hours each.If you are interested to be part of this event, you can find the details and reserve your tickets at www.festivalnew- country.com.The Festival’s goal is to draw 15,000 people over the three days. For a limited time, three-day passes are available for only $99.New Country, Line dancing and traditional country music The “New Country” originated with the release of Billy Ray Cyrus’ ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ (1992) which came with a choreography (dance) created especially to the song.Country line dancing was born. The line dancing phenomenon quickly gained popularity, first in United States and followed in Canada.People who had never listen to country music before, were drawn to the New Country because of the dancing attached to it.Dancing has always been a wonderful way to exercise and stay in shape, a great way to pass the time and have fun.Line dancing is energetic and requires remembering numerous steps, so it is also good for the brain. For a while, bars were filled with people who wanted to learn as line dancing lessons became available in most places with music. Now there are groups in most cities that meet once or twice a week to learn the latest steps.I get asked often what is the difference between Country Music and New Country?Well, New Country can actually be described as being strongly infused with pop and rock.New country is not so distinctive, since most artists and CDs end up sounding alike, there’s a uniformity in the sound (guitars, drums) and it rarely features the basic instruments found in Country music such as steel-guitar, fiddle and Dobro. It is simple, mainstream entertaining music that appeals to a large and younger base of fans, as well as middle- aged fans who seek an alternative to harder rock music and younger listeners drawn to the pop-influenced sound that underscores many current Country hits.New Country is noted primarily for its themes on drinking and partying, beach, girls, and pickup trucks, it is music intended for party. We often hear artists who are close to 40, sing songs with topics meant for worry free students still in college, mainly thinking about having fun.Notable artists associated with this genre are Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, and Florida Georgia Line whose song ‘Cruise’ became the best-selling country song of all time.Sometimes it goes too far.The genre however is controversial and it has been criticized by other country musicians and country music fans, over its themes and depiction of women, opening up a gap between the older generation of country singers and the younger bro country singers. On the other hand, there are still TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture March 15 - March 21, 2019 Country Connection Jessie CONT’D FROM PAGE 8 today, many country singers, who offer some great country music. The genre has evolved, like it should, but the instrumentation remains faithful to its roots and its songs keep telling sad or happy stories about real life, the way country music has always been known.Traditional country singers such as George Strait, Alan Jackson, Mark Ches- nutt, Brad Paisley, Willian Michael Morgan, Dillon Carmichael, Cody Johnson, Sunny Sweeny, Kacey Musgraves just to name a few are still present on the charts and on the tour circuit and cater to both an older and younger crowd.Something often misunderstood by mainstream fans is that just because something is “traditional” country does- n’t mean it needs to be classic or “old”.The interesting thing is that fans admit that some of today’s releases aren't actually country music by referring to it subtly as "country-pop" or “New Country”.So when we have artists today, making country music that actually sounds country, it raises another debate about the expression "today's country," because the new album by Cody Johnson or William Michael Morgan and the new album by Jason Aldean or Luke Bryan are obviously far from being the same genre of music.Music is also a question of feelings, so it is possible that you love your country music to be traditional and once in a while hear a “New Country” melody that will charm you.Unless you are a purist! athletic accomplishments by the Foundation for Athletic Excellence (FAEQ) in the 27th edition of the National Bank Bursary Program.During the ceremony, which took place at the National Bank Tower, a total of $126,000 was distributed in the form of individual $2,000 and $4,000 bursaries.“Each year, it’s a pleasure for us to pursue our collaboration with the Foundation for Athletic Excellence,” said National Bank President and CEO Louis Vachon.“Our partnership, which dates back more than a quarter-century, enables us to foster academic and athletic excellence in Quebec’s top student-athletes.We are proud to recognize the talent, discipline, and determination of the recipients.” For the 27th edition of the National Bank Bursary Program, 19 Academic Excellence bursaries were awarded to student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding academic results, 12 Academic and Athletic Support bursaries were distributed to encourage the conciliation of sport and study, and two Perseverance bursaries were awarded to highlight the determination of an athlete in the face of difficult circumstances.Over the years, athletes who benefitted from the bursary program include tennis player Félix Auger- Aliassime, freestyle skier and 2018 Olympic champion Mikaël Kingsbury, cross-country skier and five-time international medallist Alex Harvey, weightlifter and two-time Olympic medallist Christine Girard, divers and multiple international medallists Jennifer Abel and Roseline Filion, and hockey players Mélodie Daoust, Charline Labonté, and Caroline Ouellette, who have stood on the Olympic podium on several occasions.Eastern Township athletes supported this year are Jason Bégin, 16, biathlete Pauline Grandbois, 17, from Sherbrooke, and BMX rider Gaby Malenfant, from Drummondville, each received $4,000 in support, while karate artist Léa Morin, 16 from Sherbrooke got $2,000.Meet Rob Guy, former elite runner, past CEO of Athletics Canada and founder of the recently launched Canada Run Club.Guy, a Toronto resident, along with his leadership group of former Canadian National Team middle distance runner Dave Reid, and Walter Faion, a lifestyle runner who hasn’t missed a run in thirty years, created the CRC to promote physical literacy. No doubt to anyone that knows them, the three have a life long passion for the sport.Their special mission at the CRC is, to welcome all levels of abilities and be a resource for the betterment of all, from training tips to providing a running hub where runners can connect with each other. In an interview this week, Guy revealed his ambitious plan for his club’s growth, saying, "There are (approximately) 1.6 million runners in Canada. Our club just started two weeks ago so we have less than 100 members so far, but are hoping to have 100,000 by the end of 2020." Running can be challenging to find a comfort level, yet those who persist may reap the tangible benefits of losing weight, building confidence, improved mental well-being and increased stamina. There are many athletes that make the transition to running from other sports without skipping a beat, especially cyclists and soccer players, as well as those who use running to rehab into top shape after an injury. It’s part of a running boom which has grown exponentially over the past 40 years.Guy continues, "We want to inspire, educate and motivate all levels and newcomers to running from (the) east to the west coast." The CRC offers an annual membership that costs only five dollars to join, in return for benefits which include coaching services, contests, and special rates on running gear.Whether you are looking to connect with other runners from across the country, to sharing your story, everyone is welcome to join.If you have a story on running you want to share, the club wants to hear from you.Guy says, "Our team of experienced ambassadors includes some of Canada’s best athletes. We’re proud to have Olympians and passionate local runners representing CRC on the ground at events across the country.” Ambassadors will be present at selected running events to bring awareness and promote CRC and what the club can offer, whether you are a track athlete, road or trail runner.Having a national run club to join such as CRC, can enlighten Canadians to their own unique tales of training, tribulations, and accomplishments.Every region, while so different in their topography, has the commonality of runners attempting to conquer the elements. It’s opening a lot of windows and seeing how we basically manage, from novice to elites, from the mountains to the flats to the Lakeshore. From here it looks like a good idea. For more I’m really worried about the damage I may have done.Do you think I can get scanned just to be sure everything is OK?Would my insurance pay for it?Dear Reader: You are not alone in seeking reassurance about the effects of your former smoking habit. Both the federal government and private insurers agree that in cases like yours, lung cancer screenings may be useful.Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2011 found that when current and former heavy smokers underwent low-dose CT scans, which are a type of X-ray, to screen for cancer and for suspicious changes to lung tissues, a significant number of cancers were caught at an early stage.Researchers reported that the outcome of these screenings was a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths among the population studied. That led to the current recommendation that adults between the ages of 55 and 80 who have smoked 30 packs of cigarettes per year within the last 15 years should undergo a scan. This recommendation covers current smokers and those who have quit within the last 15 years.Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with smoking contributing to up to 90 percent of those deaths among both men and women.According to the American Lung Association, women who smoke are 13 times more likely than nonsmokers to go on to develop lung cancer.Among men, that likelihood goes up to 23 times the rate of nonsmokers. When people who don’t smoke are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke either at home or at work, their risk of developing lung cancer rises 20 to 30 percent. And as long as we’re on the topic, cigarette smoking accounts for about 20 percent of all deaths from heart disease in the U.S.All of which is leading us to our ongoing plea in these columns — if you’re a smoker, please stop.If you’re not, please don’t be tempted to start. When it comes to the lung cancer screening recommendations, though, it’s important to note that it’s actually a complex issue. One the plus side is the fact that cancers caught early are easier to treat. However, screening includes the risk of a false-positive result. That’s when a test seems to identify disease when no disease is present. Also of concern is something known as over-diagnosis, which is the discovery of cancer that would not have caused problems to the patient. Each of these can lead to unnecessary procedures and treatment. That’s why screenings are recommended only for heavy smokers and only within a set time frame. For those who do get a positive result from a screening, it’s important to talk to your health care team about follow-up screenings. Our recommendation is to talk all of this over with your family doctor before you make any decisions regarding a lung cancer screening.Eve Glazier, M.D., MBA, is an internist and associate professor of medicine at UCLA Health.Elizabeth Ko, M.D., is an internist and assistant professor of medicine at UCLA Health.Former heavy smoker worried about damage Church Services Anglican Presbyterian United United Friday, March 15, 2019 Page 19 The Record lot. There’s “Piper,” the eldest at 10, with whom I connect on a social and BFF level. The second-eldest, 8-year-old “Wes,” loves to play video games with me, as well as trade Pokemon cards. Then there’s “Ellie,” 7, who likes to bring out my fun and imaginative side.“Evelyn,” 6, is the adorable little munchkin whom I love as if she were my baby sister. All of them are so awesome, but lately, my cousins have been fighting over me.I used to spend a lot of time with Piper because she’s the most relatable, but then I realized I was barely giving time to anyone else.So I started spending more time with Wes, Ellie and Evelyn. But it’s starting to get harder and harder to spend time with every single one.Someone is always getting angry with another for taking me away.I really do love them all.I just wish there were a way that I could spend time with them all at once. What do I do?— Troubled Cousin Dear Troubled Cousin: You listed a series of interests that each cousin has.My suggestion is to take each one out individually for a fun day with you, doing some activity in which you can devote 100 percent of your attention to the cousin. After each cousin has had your undivided attention, it will be much easier to gather as a group, and it should make the get-togeth- ers more enjoyable. You must be a very special person to have all of your cousins clamoring for your attention. It is not surprising that when you describe the cousins, you talk about their interests and what makes them special. No wonder they love you so much! Dear Annie: I work in the summer at an art college, with a program for high schoolers who want to take classes for college credit.During the most recent summer, one of the cliques bullied a kid who has Asperger’s syndrome, to the point that he left the program early and the parents sued the school.Because I was one of the witnesses to their behavior, I had to give testimony at the deposition. The three boys who did the bullying have been barred from ever enrolling at the college. The boy they bullied had to leave before finishing the program and couldn’t receive full college credit, and part of his summer was wasted as a result. His parents told us we should let the bullies stay and finish the program. All they wanted was a financial settlement. We’re not sure exactly why the constant harassment occurred. The boy with Asperger’s stutters, has awkward movement, sounds weird and doesn’t flirt with the girls. The bullies would throw things at him, ram their chairs into him, shove him away from his computer terminal so they could make “corrections,” get in his face and bark at him. Here’s my dilemma.Should I contact the bullies’ high schools and tell them that these students are bullies and we were sued because of them? The next question is: Should I contact other colleges with which I have connections and tell them about these boys?Going to art college is, in my view, a privilege, not an entitlement. If these boys want to go to college that badly, let them go to community college.Of course, there’s no fine arts program at most community colleges, so they’d have to join America’s 99 percent and major in something more practical. On one hand, they may mature and change for the better, but on the other hand, they weren’t kicked out of my school’s program, so they really didn’t pay any price.— Witness Dear Witness: I have no witty quips about this subject. There should be no tolerance for bullying.Your school was correct not to allow the bullies to go there after they graduate, and your school should inform their high schools and seek to have the incident included on their academic records.More is caught than taught, and somewhere in these children’s lives, there has been a gap in lessons about tolerance and acceptance.Given the seriousness of the incident and the severity of the reaction, I hope that these boys, their families and their schools will become more aware.Parents must model appropriate behavior for their children, and schools must support it.I believe that as long as your school doesn’t let these boys back and has informed their schools, it has taken the appropriate steps. That said, readers with more academic experience may have more informed recommendations.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! Assuming you employ fourth-highest leads, a two is either from a four-card suit headed by at least one honor or a singleton. Here, East knows it’s a singleton. So, he wins with his diamond ace, under which South drops the six. Then East returns the diamond four, South plays his nine, and West ruffs. What next?East is sending a suit-preference signal (his lowest diamond asking for the lower-ranking of the other two side suits), but where is the three?Did East start with exactly A-4-3 in diamonds?Very unlikely, because that would leave South with five diamonds along with his six spades.Playing the percentages, West should shift to a club.East ruffs, gives his partner another diamond ruff and receives a second club ruff for down two.
