3 Fleurimont to host “Jane’s walk” in St-Jean- Baptiste sector in May By Gordon Lambie On May 4 at 1:30pm, the borough of Fleurimont will be hosting a community walk-and-talk event following in the Toronto tradition known as “Jane’s walks.” Named for journalist, activist and urban-design pioneer Jane Jacobs, the walks invite the public to join locals who are passionate about their neighbourhoods on a stroll that brings together history and community engagement “The idea is to really bring history, urban design, and the people of the area into connection with each other,” explained Vincent Boutin, Fleurimont’s Borough President, describing the upcoming event as the evolution of the council’s 2016 active pathway project. That intiative, he continued, saw the borough install signs in each of its parks indicating the walking and cycling time to other nearby parks in the name of encouraging the populace to get active and explore.“We thought it important to take this concept further,” Boutin said, arguing CONT’D ON PAGE 3 Galt students learn about First Nations culture and land acknowledgement EMILIE HACKETT Secondary three and four students met with Christine Sioui Wawanoloath (second to last in the photo) as part of Gregory McBean, Melanie Daoust, and Dominick Richard’s leadership project at Bishop’s University.By Emilie Hackett Special to the Record Secondary 3 and 4 students in the Enriched History program at Alexander Galt are in the early stages of designing a pre-colonial map of Quebec, showcasing the territories of all the different First Nations.“This initiative is part of our leadership project in the education program at Bishop’s University,” explained Gregory McBean, a secondary mathematics education student.“We knew we wanted to focus our project on reconciliation, because that’s something that is always strongly encouraged at Bishop’s,” he added.McBean is completing this project along with Melanie Daoust and Dominick Richard, secondary education students at Bishop’s specializing in history and English education, respectively. The Galt students met with Christine Sioui Wawanoloath, a First Nations writer and visual artist from Odanak, Quebec. She was a photographer, graphic artist, and journalist for First Nations publications in Ontario and Quebec, and is a painter, sculptor, illustrator, poet, and the author of three plays, two of which have already been CONT’D ON PAGE 3 Why is By Chance Alone by Max Eisen, ‘the one book to move you’?Why should we care about a work that tells a story that took place almost 75 years ago?Why is what Max has to say important and relevant to our lives today?Elie Wiesel, Holocaust Survivor, writer and Nobel Peace Prize Winner once said, “Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere.” If that is true then this is why we must read this book and remember what happened.Max Eisen was born in 1929 in Mol- dava, Czechoslovakia. He lived with his family on a farm and enjoyed a happy, normal childhood.Max begins his story by telling us about his childhood adventures, family and town.In 1939, the area that Max lived in was annexed by Hungary and his family began to endure the many anti-semitic laws of the Nazi allied government of Hungary.Despite this, Max and his family managed to continue to live their lives relatively unscathed until 1944 when he and his parents, 3 young siblings, uncle, aunt, and his grandparents were abruptly removed from their home and taken by cattle car to the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi extermination camp where over 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered between 1942 and 1945.In the book, Max describes the horror of the 3-day transport locked in a train car with no food or water, unaware of what awaited him and his family. He tells of a chaotic arrival - lights, yelling, a terrible smell, confusion and selection - his grandparents, aunt, mother, two little brothers and infant sister, all sent to one line, he, his father and uncle sent to another.Max was 15; he writes simply, “There were no goodbyes spoken here.” What Max didn't realize was that his mother and the others were sent immediately to a gas chamber where they were murdered. The story continues to detail Max’s survival in Auschwitz I, where, when he arrived in May 1944, he became one of the Jews chosen for slave labour. He, his father, and uncle worked as field labourers until July when Max’s father and uncle also were “selected” and disappeared. In just a few short months Max, at age 15, was left alone, starving and worked nearly to death. He describes his life in the camp and its many horrors.Through a series of events Max eventually found himself working as an assistant in the camp’s hospital under a doctor who was also a Polish political prisoner there.Max explains that the kindness the doctor showed him was a major factor in his survival. In 1945, with the Red Army approaching Auschwitz from the East and the German Army retreating, Max and other surviving prisoners were submitted to a “death march” - forced to walk without food or proper clothing, driven westward towards German concentration camps until, finally, at one of the camps he was liberated by the Allies. What is also interesting about Max’s memoir is that he does not just tell of his survival as a Nazi prisoner but also about how difficult it was to reclaim some sort of life and health after liberation. Many people do not know what survivors experienced after their traumatic incarceration during the Holocaust, having suffered the total loss of family, home, health and trust. This book is written simply, the language is not flowery or elaborate.Max tells his story in a straightforward, chronological way, the writing very contained, and at times the voice lacks emotion. However, this is understandable as to tell such a story must take great fortitude; to relive the loss of what turns out to be his entire immediate family, and the terrible conditions he is forced to live through, is nothing short of heroic. In 1998 Max retired and began to share his story with students in and around Toronto.Because his father implored him “if you survive, you must tell the world what happened here,” he realized that sharing his story, writing it down, was to live up to that promise.Survivors are aging, soon we will lose them.We must listen to their stories, pay attention, while we can.It is his story alone, he cannot tell the stories of the other millions murdered by hate. But we can listen to him and remember the others. As Max says, “We must be alert to the dangers of hatred, speak out against discrimination, and defend the fairness and openness of a free and democratic society with rules of law to sustain it.” So to come back to my original questions about why we should consider this book as one to move us.Very recently, 50 people were killed, Muslims, by a shooter in New Zealand who was fuelled by hate, anti-Muslim, and anti-immi- grant beliefs. In October, 11 people, Jews, were shot in a Philadelphia synagogue by an armed man shouting anti-Semitic slurs. In January 2017, a man shot and killed 6 Muslims while they worshipped in a Quebec City Mosque, motivated by hate and racism. The US anti-defamation League logged a 57 per cent rise in anti- Semitic incidents in 2017.In France, offences against Jews have increased by 74 per cent in recent years. In North America, Europe, and the world, the fact is that hate is on the the rise.If what Elie Wiesel said is true, that “to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time”, it is our individual responsibility to ensure that our eyes are open to the message of this book.We must remember the most terrible crime of the Shoah, remember the people who were murdered, hear the stories of the survivors and allow those stories, Max’s story, to change us.This week's review, by Stephanie McCully, is taken Retchless, the forecast for the next few days could lead to flooding.“I think we need to let the people of Sherbrooke and others along The St.Francois River and the tributaries that normally flood, that next Monday and Tuesday may be problematic,” he said.Friday and Saturday are expected to be warm with temperatures ranging between 10c-15c, Retchless said.“This will get the deep snow pack that is still in the woods melting. Then on Sunday into Monday we could see 25 to 35mm of rain.If this comes to fruition we could see some flooding,” he commented.Retchless predicted the chance of flooding to be in the 30 per cent probability range.“Anyone living in historical spring flood areas should be on alert Late Monday into Tuesday,” Retchless said.Pierre-Luc Dusseault named NDP ?nance critic Record Staff On Wednesday, New Democrat Party leader Jagmeet Singhan- nounced the appointment of Sherbrooke MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault as finance critic for the federal NDP caucus."It is a real honor to have such responsibilities placed on my team and to be able to continue my work for greater social, fiscal, and environmental justice," Dusseault commented."I am aware of the tremendous work that this represents,” Dusseault said, “I am proud of what I have achieved so far, but I know that much remains to be done to improve our tax system and finally correct an economic system that always favors the wealthiest. The reality of Canada under the leadership of Liberals and Conservatives is that wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a select few at a time when household debt is growing. This has to change.” Pierre-Luc Dusseault has held several positions in addition to his role as MP for Sherbrooke. He has chaired two parliamentary committees and served as deputy critic for democratic reform.Since 2015, Mr.Dusseault has been NDP National Revenue Critic and Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Finance Committee.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 staged. She is from the Abenaki and Wendat Nations.Wawanoloath spoke with the students about Abenaki culture and many different myths and legends pertaining to the land and to Quebec culture, including the origin story of maple syrup. She insisted on the importance of a respectful relationship with the land. She also taught the students how to say “thank you” in Abenaki and Wendat languages before she left. She had previously visited Galt last fall during librarian Judith Munger’s activities for indigenous awareness.“We thought that this project would be a great way to promote land acknowledgement. At first, we wanted to perhaps go on a field trip with the students to the Musée des Abénakis in Odanak, but as student-teachers, we don’t really have a budget,” McBean admitted.“Christine had already visited Galt for a previous activity, so we got her contact through Judith. We knew that it wasn’t our story to tell and it would be important to host a person who is First Nations and who is connected to the culture firsthand.” Last week, the students were assigned various research questions regarding different Nations that resided in Quebec to be prepared for the conversation with Wawanoloath.“When they’ll be designing the map today, they have all this information at their disposal so that they can visualize how these different territories worked for different Nations,” said McBean.“They will paint the maps on canvases on Friday, and they will be hung up in the cafeteria for the rest of the school year.” “I’m a history student-teacher here, so that’s just one reason why this project is important to me,” mentioned Daoust.“In the last few classes, we’ve been focusing on the history of conflicts in Canada between Indigenous Peoples and non-indigenous people.Like Senator Murray Sinclair said, it took many generations to instill the trauma between these two groups, and we’re part of the first generation to try to heal that divide. This is a first step that is necessary to take,” she added.“I was never exposed to the flipside of conflicts between colonizers and Indigenous Peoples in high school classes, so what we’re doing here is part of a recent change in the way we teach history,” remarked McBean.Galt students Here at the Eastern Townships School Board (ETSB) we consider ourselves lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers that help out each and every day in our schools and their communities.Volunteers are the cornerstone for many of the extra activities that take place in our schools, some of which would not be possible, especially on the scale they are offered now, without the support of our volunteers. For many the day starts with the early morning breakfast program, where students are met with a warm smile and a healthy snack to start the day off on the right foot.Once the school day starts, many of our schools are bustling with volunteers who give their time and expertise to support students by reading with them, helping to organize our school libraries, and lending a hand for all kinds of classroom activities, to name but a few.You will see volunteers at fundraising events, after-school activities, sporting events and on class trips.Volunteers play many roles in the lives of our students such as; mentors, tutors, coaches, chaperones, and the list goes on! Often behind the scenes, volunteers support our students, schools and the communities they serve by enriching the lives of our students and staff. Not only during National Volunteer Week, but all year long we would like to recognize each and every volunteer that is lifting up our schools and communities! On behalf of our students, personnel and the Council of Commissioners, we would like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts.Page 4 Friday , April 12, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record April 7-13 is National Volunteer Week (NVW) across Canada where Canadians acknowledge and celebrate Canada’s 12.7 million volunteers. The theme this year is: “The Volunteer Factor-Lifting Communities.” The theme recognizes how volunteers and volunteering lift our communities and make them stronger, more inclusive and vivacious. On Friday, April 12, the Municipality of Potton supported by the Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre (CABMN) will host a 5 to 7 celebrating Potton volunteers at the Town Hall in Mansonville.`As the Community Organizer for the Municipality of Potton, I have the pleasure of working alongside many of our community volunteers,`shares Trish Wood.`Without the vital contribution made by those who give of their time and talents, our community would not be a place of constant evolution and growth.` Friday evening`s celebration will be hosted by Potton`s Mayor, Jacques Marcoux and members of the Municipal Council: Jason Ball, Bruno Cote, Andre Ducharme, Michael Laplume, Francis Marcoux and Eddy Mierzwinski along with Dan Giroux, President of the Man- sonville Optimist Club and Steeve Cote from the Quebec Provincial Police Department, all of whom will greet guests as they enter the celebration.Michael Darney will welcome attendees with his bagpiping talents and Dave Sturton will entertain guests during the party on guitar.Refreshments will be served including a variety of locally prepared samplings from eateries and stores. The Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre (CABMN) takes this opportunity to join the Municipality in thanking, celebrating and recognizing the efforts of all volunteers.Through the coordination of the CAB`s volunteer support team made up of Debra Harding and Sarah Jersey, the CAB has worked with and the Potton community has benefitted from the contribution and efforts of over 200 active volunteers throughout the year. While the CABMN recognizes all volunteer efforts, in this photo the CABMN salutes one weekly volunteer, Beatrice Baass pictured here with Marie- Jeanne and Leslie Fidler. At their request, Beatrice voluntarily teaches the couple conversational and written French on a weekly bases at the CABMN main offices.`With a French name like Marie- Jeanne, many people assume that I can speak French fluently, explained Fidler.`This motivated me to want to learn a more proficient conversational French and it was my husband`s idea to do it together as a couple and we approached the CABMN to ask if a volunteer could help,` she added.Beatrice Baass was quick to volunteer and the trio are now enjoying their time together. To all volunteers in communities all over the country, a resounding `Thank you`for all you do and the difference you make.Just one example of how volunteering helps others.Leslie and Marie- Jeanne Fidler pose with volunteer, Beatrice Baass.COURTESY Mable Hastings The Scoop Potton celebrates National Volunteer Week Never underestimate the impact of volunteers! A note from the ETSB By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) This Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week.If you happen to visit a local church and you are not afraid to look foolish, you may find yourself in the traditional Palm Sunday parade where young and old alike wave palm branches (simulated or real), singing and processing all around the sanctuary. It is a time to sing joyously and exuberantly (as if no one was listening – so the saying goes). This re-enactment of that first Palm Sunday, followed by the events leading up to Good Friday, bring into sharp focus how easily life can bring us to the heights of delight only to have us crashing down to the depths of despair on the turn of a dime. Our lives are fragile and uncertain and no amount of security, wealth or political power can alter that fact.Life is not easy and sometimes it seems as if we have lost the capacity to rejoice.Yet I am continually astounded at the human capacity to rise above our personal hardships and find things to sing about, laugh about and be grateful for. This past week I went to see the Knowl- ton Players production of Mamma Mia.I know I am not alone in finding myself still singing some of those joyful tunes.Despite the days when everything seems to be a struggle, sometimes moments of pure joy break through the clouds and I know without a shadow of a doubt that life is good, very, very good! “I have a dream, a song to sing, to help me cope with anything… I believe in angels, something good in everything I see.” 2)The poet W.H.Auden has this wonderful line about "practicing the scales of rejoicing." As a music student I felt the usual way about scales, they were a drudgery to be avoided until I found a teacher that totally transformed my attitude toward voice training.Ms.O modeled singing scales expressively, as though they were great arias. We'd sing them together, sometimes in unison or as dialogue, putting heart and soul into the practice, trying to outdo each other infusing them with musicality.Because she said it was all the same notes, songs or scales, and the practice was music in a pure form. Are you rejoicing yet?Whether you look out at the still frozen landscape and wonder when, how spring will arrive, whether what you see makes you feel like rejoicing or not, now is a good time to practice.Because the inner landscape is far more significant that the weather. And the power and creativity to cultivate that inner landscape with seeds of new growth and blossoming joy exists as a choice within each of us.Did Auden mean that it's all gift, all worth rejoicing about whatever is happening?I'm not so sure, but I do know that when I start singing Alleluias, my soul is lifted up.Miraculously, like the vocal practice before the performance, it primes the spirit and I begin to rejoice in the doing it.So quickly - before we've missed the moment. As I write this, it's still cold and white out there. While the ground is still frozen and the green shoots have yet to appear, for no reason at all but that we are alive and the world is spinning on its axis, let's practice the scales of rejoicing, and warm our hearts for spring before it arrives. In the words of a favourite hymn, "Rejoice, rejoice! Again I say, rejoice!" 3) I have a curling friend whose name is Joy.If I want to distract her, or amuse her, or annoy her, I sing songs with the word Joy in them: Joy to the world, Joy comes with the dawn, Joyful, joyful we adore you, I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart, or my favourite - Jeremiah was a bullfrog. My singing isn't the best, but I can always produce a smile.I've been told that I'm very good at rejoicing.Try saying the word, rejoice, out loud with friends without smiling. There was an old Saturday Night Live comedy sketch where a character called Debby Downer would be out with friends on the verge of celebration and she would frown and turn any cheery conversation to something sad.In an instant the mood would change, smiles would fade, and dramatic music would illustrate her effect on the group.I would rather be a rejoicing Roger, with a smile and a joke to lighten the mood than a Debby Downer.Jesus said once “I have come to bring joy, and bring it more completely.” As you may have guessed, I am not a shy person.Rejoicing, however, does not need to be loud and attention getting.I have an uncle who is on the quiet side, and very reflective. One summer morning at the lake I decided to go for a swim. The sky was beautiful and I was enjoying the water. My uncle came down from his cottage and joined me for his morning swim, without saying a word, as usual. We were standing side by side looking around when he spoke these words; “This is one of those moments when I think, this is the day that the Lord has made.We will rejoice and be glad in it.” That was our entire conversation that morning. In his quiet way his heart was rejoicing.4) Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice (Psalm 96:12) Do you feel this? The psalmist goes on to say that we rejoice as we wait together for the coming of the Lord – we and all of creation. As we head, soon, into Holy Week we are aware of waiting for the Lord and for the joy there will be with his return. In the meanwhile, we have much to rejoice in this beautiful earth that he has created. The melting river now flows. The grass is revealed beneath the snow.Songbirds have returned. The sun reminds us what it is to feel truly warm. This year Earth Day and Easter Day sit side by side. This is a wonderful opportunity to think about how we can participate in the joy of the earth. How can we help “the field to be joyful”?Maybe you can take a walk and notice how the fields around you are waking up after the long winter.Maybe you can be filled with gratitude about the food these fields will produce, both for us and for our animal brothers and sisters.Maybe you can think of ways to tread more lightly on the earth. We have been the recipients of gifts unasked for and unearned: Jesus, our friend and companion, and the earth on which we live. How can we do anything but rejoice? One word, four voices - now we turn it over to you: What gives your spirit cause to rejoice?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; East-West need five tricks.East should hope for two diamonds and three clubs. But if East discourages in diamonds at trick one, West might shift to a heart.East can make matters perfectly clear to his partner. He overtakes with the diamond ace, cashes the club king (king from ace-king after trick one), leads a low diamond and awaits West’s club return through dummy.Bingo!
