what can possibly be done?Back in the good old U.S.A.(NB & M.C.), scientists attempt a biblical solution.A scientific team led by Dr.Hubert Frame repurpose a space station that is currently under construction and come up with a self-contained space ark, one kilometre in circumference, which they dub America I.The plan is to complete construction in a secret location (in Kansas!), install all necessary systems to make the ark indefinitely sustainable, and launch it at the appropriate time.It will be peopled by 25 males and 25 females, “cybernetically” selected by computer for their scientific and technical expertise and for their reproductive potential.(Picture a mix of Superman’s escape from the planet Krypton and Mr.Spock put in charge of the Enterprise!) The whole process devolves into a variation on the parlour game “Lifeboat” as people haggle and compete over who should be included on the space ark and who should even be told about the entire operation.Vanessa Frame, hyper-beauti- ful and -intelligent daughter of Hubert Frame, is chosen. Her husband, Valentine Brodie—successful science fiction writer, serial philanderer, drunk (clearly the Burgess persona)—also makes the cut.Trouble is he can’t refrain from going out on pub crawls, and on one of these expeditions he comes to the rescue of a department-store Santa who is being mugged by a pack of louts.Santa, it turns out, is a fairly erudite and accom- plished—and chronically unemployed— Shakespearean actor Robert Courtland van Caulaert Willet.Brodie misses the final transport to the space ark, and he and Willet make up a Prince Hal and Falstaff survival duo.Together they go through the pandemonium of the asteroid’s first brush with the planet.Tides rise to the level of the highest New York skyscrapers, parts of the eastern seaboard disappear, chaos and anarchy are unleashed, and all the normal rules of social order are suspended.Their mission solidifies: How to get Brodie aboard the ark and secure the future of humankind against the cold calculations of science.Throughout, the reader’s attention is drawn to a series of characters and their individual predicaments. How will Jack Skilling, the Canadian-born president of the United States of America, Mexico and Canada, maintain some illusion of normalcy as chunks of America disappear? How will he prepare the populace for their inevitable fate? What of the opportunistic and hypocritical evangelist Calvin Gropius and his entourage? Will they manage to finagle a passage on the ark? Will the mobsters from a Dallas casino manage to scam and bully their way on ship? Will the decidedly mar- tinettish Paul Bartlett, the designated military leader of the project, manage to maintain discipline within the America I project? Will Russchin (Russia-China) steal the march and come up with a better ark?Stay tuned! Burgess’ real forte is story line and dramatic narrative. And he peppers the tale with odd “futuristic” contrivances— telescreens, durovit, heliroof.(One suspects that these terms are not as compelling as they once were—our diet of sci-fi has been fairly rich over the past fifty years! But still, they do emit the telltale bouquet of vintage Burgess.) Characters, as is often the case in philosophical novels, are more symbolic than fully realized.Burgess had more than a little prophet in him, and what he offers in Puma is a cautionary tale for our times.Every day, in the strident right-versus- left debates over immigration, environment, and human rights, we see the same questions arise over privilege and entitlement.Who does the future belong to?The wealthy? The intelligent? The gifted? The oppressed? The compassionate? As resources shrink and prospects of environmental catastrophe loom large, how many of the 7.7 billion will fit on the ark? Will our so-called liberal values collapse under the weight of relentless competition for niche space?By Stephen Sheeran Puma is available upon request at Lennoxville Library.Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , June 14, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: SHOWERS, RISKS OF T- STORMS HIGH 17 LOW 11 SATURDAY: PERIODS OF RAIN HIGH 18 LOW 13 SUNDAY: RAIN HIGH 20 LOW 14 MONDAY: CLOUDY HIGH 22 LOW 13 TUESDAY: MIX OF SUN AND CLOUD HIGH 24 LOW 10 The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week.Wherever you are.Access the full edition of the Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and 30 days of archives.Renew or order a new 12- month print subscription and get a 12-month online subscription for an additional $5 or purchase the online edition only for $125.00 Record subscription rates (includes Quebec taxes) For print subscription rates, please call 819-569-9528 or email us at billing@sherbrookerecord.com 12 month web only: $125.00 1 month web only: $11.25 Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3: 1.Visit the Record website: www.sherbrookerecord.com 2.Click e-edition.3.Complete the form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.GO O D RE A D S Lennoxville library Burgess! CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 idea that the Legion would decide this, and nobody seems to be able to tell us why or how they’re allowed to do it.” McGee said that more than anything else she feels hurt by the fact that the family heard from Knowles, rather than the current branch executive, and only after the decision had already been made.“They would have done it without telling the family at all if Debbie hadn’t told us,” she said, calling the decision abrupt and rude, particularly given what she said has been great dedication to the Legion on the part of her family over the years.“I really feel like the whole family has done a lot to support the Legion,” McGee said.“We all try to take care of our community groups when they need help.” The Record reached out to the Branch 15 President, Siemy Stelwagen, for a response to the concerns expressed regarding the removal of the memorial stone but was told the executive is choosing not to comment at this time.According to Knowles, the decision has created a rift between the Legion and some of its members, with a group of about 20 having decided not to go back under the current administration.“We just know the dishonesty and the malicious gossip that goes around the place and has affected many of us.We’ll keep our membership to the Legion, we’re all loyal Legion people, but not with that group,” the former president said, stressing the fact that the decision was not an easy one.“We’re hurting our own legion,” she added.“It makes me sad to think that it would come to this.” Knowles repeated the confusion she expressed in her letter as to how the memorial could have been so offensive to legion members only a few years after its installation when she had not heard anything previously, although she did acknowledge some “jealousy” being expressed outside of meetings about special treatment.“At none of our meetings was this subject ever broached,” she said.“The Legion itself nominated (Lancaster) for the Governor General’s Medal and gave her the medal in 2015.They’d given her certificates of merit and all this and then she drops dead on her watch and she’s treated like this.” Like McGee, Knowles expressed frustration that the Legion didn’t reach out to the family.“They haven’t made any effort to meet the family,” the former president said, calling it a slap in the face while acknowledging that the executive did call and leave a message.According to McGee, the memorial stone is now in the family’s possession and there is a conversation ongoing about finding it a new home, although she said that even that feels complicated and confusing.“Are we allowed to do that, even?Take a stone that was given to the Legion and put it somewhere else?” she asked.“It seems a little funny to me.None of it sits well.” Friday , June 14, 2019 Page 3 These messages will remind workers that, regardless of age, injury risks are higher during the weeks after hiring.LOCAL NEWS The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Last Chance- Closing Sale Maison Distincte - Cabinet Making Shop June 15 & 16, 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.or by appointment, Tel.: 514-974-3553 1169 Ch.Knowlton, Lac Brome, Qc J0E 2P0 Spray Booth (20’x14’x9’) Set of double oak doors with arched stain glass jamb, Mouldings, Cabinet doors and panels, Sheets of Melamine, Veneers, Hardware (drawer tracks, soft close, hinges etc.), lumber, tables, office furniture and lots more - everything must go! Memorial removal CNESST warns young workers about risks of work injuries Record Staff As the summer holidays approach, many young people will be starting their first jobs, or a new a job for the season. The CNESST (Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail) encourages employers and young workers to discuss health and safety to prevent accidents that often have serious consequences. On average, 31 young workers are the victims of work accidents every given day in Quebec. From June 10 to June 30, radio stations in Quebec will broadcast a message targeting working youth and another targeting employers. The broadcast targeting youth will also air on Spotify, a popular online music streaming platform. These messages will remind workers that, regardless of age, injury risks are higher during the weeks after hiring.Since young workers change jobs more often than older workers, they are more often in the position of a “new employee.” New workers also have little knowledge of the risks and safer work methods related to their job, adding on to the higher rate of injuries. Moreover, the number of injuries is higher for jobs held by those aged 15 to 24 years old, which present a larger accumulation of factors than those held by their older counterparts: irregular hours, repetitive work, handling heavy loads, etc. From May to August, over 650,000 Quebecers aged 15 to 24 enter the job market.Employers are invited to create a work environment where their young workers can express their observations, their doubts, and their questions when executing a task.Training and supervision, from the moment an employee is hired and throughout their employment, is crucial and constitutes an obligation for the employer. The CNESST offers employers and employees an entryway and integrated expertise regarding labour standards. For more information, visit their website at cnesst.gouv.qc.ca or check out their Facebook page at facebook.com/cnesst.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 “We hosted a murder mystery event when the students came back from Christmas break,” explained Williams.“One morning, they walked into a crime scene: the death of Felix Navidad, a wealthy socialite from Florida whose body was found at his beach house.Navi- dad had invited four acquaintances, Vera Cruise, Kendra Goode, Alfredo Fettucine, and Gene Poule, up to his beach house for the holidays, and they are now all suspects.” The detailed crime scene was set up in the classroom and students were encouraged to take notes, make sketches, make an initial assessment of the evidence, and put forward a prime suspect. They later carried out forensic tests on the evidence, analyzed the results, and adjusted their assessments.“The project was multidisciplinary, and the students loved it,” gushed Williams, who has been teaching at NHES for 11 years.“They were all invited to make their own assumptions about the crime and the suspects, which made for a great variety in these written narratives.Every student has a different idea of what actually happened to Felix Navidad.” Susan Bennett, Carol Martignacco, Michelle Normandeau, and Melanie Cutting visited the school to give workshops on writing murder mysteries throughout the year.“They are such an engaged group of kids.We were ready to expect a few dull moments in the workshops, but they were all so eager to participate. It was wonderful!” exclaimed Bennett.“But I think that this is most importantly all thanks to Richard. He is fantastic at what he does.” Four NHES students read an excerpt of their short story to the crowd gathered in the gymnasium.Sixth graders Victoria Houston and Jeremy Lehmann used multiple characters’ perspective in order to add suspense to their short story, while Emma Picard and fifth grader Evelyn Meyers opted for a single suspect’s perspective to detail their thrilling account of the murder.WHWN offers writing workshops to all Townshippers in an effort to promote the importance of creative writing.Their next workshop will be held on June 17 at Uplands, on 9 Speid Street in Lennoxville, from 1:30 p.m.to 3:30 p.m.Hosted by Melanie Cutting, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the world of non-fiction writing. They will also be hosting another event at Uplands on Thursday, June 20, from 10 a.m.to 2:30 p.m.A special outdoor workshop, entitled Workshop on Nature Writing led by Angela Leuck, Stephen Luxton, and Jan Draper, will be offered for $14, which includes a traditional cream tea service. For more information, call 819- 566-5717 to reserve a spot and check out their Facebook page, “Write Here, Write Now! www.crosswindscottages.com Strange Sports in the Townships: Yoganimo By Gordon Lambie Popular modern-day yoga is probably better described as a physical activity than a sport, but it is hard to deny that it has become well-known part of the fitness world.Although the origins of the practice date back centuries and are rooted in Hindu spirituality, it is now possible to find yoga studios and workshops for people of all ages almost anywhere you look in North America, and new versions and adaptations of the ancient and sacred practice seem to pop up all the time.Take goat yoga, for example; a combination of the meditative poses of yoga, and the desire of baby goats to climb on things that are near them on the ground. The unusual activity is advertised by the Domaine Quinchien farm in Vau- dreuil-Dorion, where goat yoga has been practiced for several years now, as “a most unique experience,” but according to Veronica Béland of the Verger Champêtre - gîte et compagnie, on the west side of Granby, the activity is meant to be more than just a silly gimmick.“Communion with nature is something that is very important,” Béland said, explaining that the Verger Champêtre is getting ready to host its first summer of a program that is being called “Yoganimo.” Like goat yoga, “Yoganimo” will allow visitors to practice yoga in an open field, surrounded by farm animals. In this case, however, it’s not just about goats; there will also be alpacas and miniature horses in the field.“Our turkeys will not be a part of Yo- ganimo,” clarified farm worker Anabelle Poissant, explaining that the goats, horses, and especially alpacas and their babies are the biggest draw for people to come visit the farm each year.“The animals we have here are really socialized,” Béland said, sharing that people should still feel they have room for legitimate meditation. The event coordinator pointed out that Yoganimo will be led by a certified Hatha Yoga instructor, Stéphanie Kitembo, who will help keep the focus of the sessions on connection with nature based on experiences she has had practicing and teaching yoga all over the world.“In India they do it on the side of rivers,” Béland said.“It is not like here where yoga has been “Americanized” in studios.” On the practical side of things, Poissant said that the animals’ enclosures will be cleaned before each session begins. Each session will last from 10:30 a.m.to 11:45 a.m.and those coming to participate will continue to have access to the site for the remainder of the day.“People really like our alpacas and all of our animals, so it is like two in one,” she said, calling the new activity an “out of the ordinary” experience.Although Yoganimo is a new adventure for the Verger Champêtre - gîte et compagnie, Béland said that even in the lead up to the June 22 launch there has been a surprising amount of interest “Already half of the class is reserved, and we have done very little publicity,” she said.More information on the Verger Champêtre - gîte et compagnie is available online at https://vergerchampetre.com/en/ or over the phone by calling 450-379-5155.COURTESY The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , June 14, 2019 Page 5 By Taylor McClure Special to The Record The Record was recently reminded by one of our readers about a criminal case that took place in Sherbrooke in 1913.Known as one of Sherbrooke’s most famous criminals, the case of Harry Thaw took North America by storm.Born on February 12, 1871 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, Harry Thaw grew up in a privileged home but was a troubled child from the get go.He was consistently paranoid as a child and he was always getting into trouble at school due to his angry outbursts.Despite having low grades, his father was able to get him into the University of Pittsburgh to study law where he would turn to alcohol and partying. He would eventually be expelled from the prestigious school for chasing after someone with a shotgun.Following his expulsion, Thaw turned to drugs and started to split his time between Allegheny and New York where he attended Broadway shows.Going to New York was the first step that would lead to Thaw’s eventual incarceration. While spending time in New York, Thaw met respected architect Stanford White.White would become Thaw’s rival as they both had feelings for the same woman: Evelyn Nesbitt.Thaw was obsessed with Nesbitt and repeatedly showered her with expensive items.Nesbitt’s mother eventually convinced her to marry Thaw. When Thaw gained knowledge that White had taken Nesbitt’s virginity, he became more obsessed with their relationship than he was with Evelyn.Thaw would eventually confront White on June 25, 1906 at Madison Square Garden where there was a big event taking place.High on drugs and alcohol, Thaw shot White three times in the face in front of a large crowd of witnesses.Following this incident, Thaw was arrested and two trials took place. In the first trial, the jury reached a deadlock decision, which forced Thaw to go through a second trial. In the second trial on the murder of Stanford White, the verdict of the jury was guilty by reason of insanity and Thaw was sent to an asylum in Mat- teawan, New York. This was only the beginning of the Harry Shaw case.More complications followed. In August 17, 1913, Thaw escaped from the Matteawan asylum and made his way over the Canadian border to Coaticook.Authorities in Coaticook arrested him on August 19 on the charge of unlawfully escaping from an asylum. However, his lawyers at the time, Dr.Shurtleff and Col.Frager, argued that escaping an asylum is not a criminal offence and he cannot be held for that reason or on that specific charge. They also argued that there was no proof that he was insane. His lawyers filed a petition for habeas corpus, a motion which gives the right to anyone who believes they have been wrongfully arrested to appear before the courts to defend their freedom.A bitter battle ensued between Thaw’s defense team and the Canadian lawyers that were looking to have Thaw extradited. In a hearing before Mr.Justice Globen- sky, Thaw’s petition for habeas corpus was granted. The Canadian Department of Justice argued that Thaw could not be extradited because if he were found guilty of anything, it was conspiracy and under Canadian law you cannot be deported on that charge. While Thaw’s team thought this was a win, the immigration authorities were also after Thaw on the charge of entering Canada by “stealth” rather than entering by a regular port of entry and failing to declare himself to the customs officer that was there. They were looking to extradite him to the United States and if he were freed, he would again be immediately arrested. After his defense team caught wind of what the immigration authorities were planning on doing following his release, they demanded a discontinuation of the petition for habeas corpus on August 25.Thaw did not want to be returned to the Unites State by immigration authorities because there was a warrant out for his arrest in New York on charges of conspiracy for escaping the asylum. As soon as he crossed the border, he would once again be rearrested, only this time by American authorities, and there was a possibility that he would be sent back to the asylum. His discontinuation of the petition for habeas corpus was granted on August 27 and he remained in the Sherbrooke Jail.Immigration authorities could no longer take him into custody until the charges against him were dropped. On August 30 1913, another writ of habeas corpus was issued by the police officer that arrested Thaw in Coaticook when he made his way to Canada.Chief of police Boudreau knew that when he arrested Thaw that he was being jailed illegally because, as previously mentioned, escaping an asylum is not a criminal offence. He wanted justice for Thaw and demanded that he be freed. His defense team on the other hand, believed that Boudreau’s petition was a ploy to have him extradited back to the United States. On September 2, the Attorney General of Canada finally stepped in to deal with the case of Harry Thaw.He also demanded that Thaw be liberated immediately as he was being jailed illegally. He also stated that the jail was not be used as a “boarding house” for those people who are trying to avoid the law. While all of this was going on, Thaw surprisingly received much sympathy from the Sherbrooke community. They viewed his arrest as unlawful and felt bad for the man for having to spend seven years in an asylum without any proof that he was insane. On September 3, Boudreau’s writ of habeas corpus was granted and Thaw was a free man for a very brief period of time.Immediately following his release, a warrant was set out for his arrest and immigration authorities arrested him as a federal prisoner. On September 4, there was a hearing with the Board of Inquiry to decide whether or not Thaw should be deported.Federal authorities were using all of their power to limit the involvement of Thaw’s defense team and to get him back into the US as soon as possible.Under the Immigration Act, anyone taken into custody by immigration authorities has the right to appeal the Board’s decision if it is against them.At a hearing in Coaticook, the Board of Inquiry ruled against Thaw and demanded that he be immediately deported to Vermont. He appealed the decision and his Montreal lawyers filed another writ of habeas corpus to have him released from immigration authorities. The immigration authorities’ demand that Thaw be deported was dropped until a decision on his lawyer’s new petition for habeas corpus was established. The deportation order also had to be reviewed and confirmed by the Minister of Justice. On September 11, Thaw was deported back to the United States and brought over the Vermont border. The Minister of Justice supported the Board’s decision to deport Thaw, ignoring the habeas corpus petition that needed to be brought to the courts first. This decision on part of the Minister of Justice would land Canada in hot water.Thaw’s Montreal lawyers fought the case by declaring that the Immigration Act was unconstitutional in an effort to bring Thaw back to Canada for a hearing. The Minister of Justice backed up his decision by explaining that under the Immigration Act, if the person who is being deported has his appeal rejected, the deportation must take place immediately.Thaw’s Montreal lawyers fought the claims, but on September 27, the Judgment of the Court of Appeal supported the Minister of Justice’s decision and completely eliminated Thaw’s petition for habeas corpus due to a technical error in the documents they provided. After he was deported, Thaw was arrested in New Hampshire and charged with being a fugitive of justice because of the warrant on his head by the New York authorities on the charge of conspiracy. The case in New Hampshire involved fighting for Thaw’s extradition back to Pennsylvania, where he is from, rather than back to New York. There was no law at the time that stated that an insane person must be returned to the state where they were once being held.Another writ of habeas corpus was filed in New Hampshire.Thaw’s lawyers wanted to prove that the charges of conspiracy were intended to hide the real motives of the New York authorities, which apparently had to do with Thaw’s wealth. On September 16, the writ of habeas corpus was granted and a judge believed the question of Thaw’s insanity should be brought before the Federal court. He fought his case for two years until he was found sane by the Federal Court on July 16, 1915.Thaw, who had shot Stanford White multiple times in front of a crowd of witnesses, was then be able to enjoy his freedom for a few years until he was sent back to another asylum for the sexual assault and physical abuse of a teenage boy.He stayed there for seven years and upon his release, moved to a farm in Virginia where he became a firefighter. He lived out the rest of his days in Florida until passing away from a heart attack at the age of 76.Townships History Tidbits The habeas corpusy case of Harry Thaw RECORD ARCHIVES By Colette Brin professeure et directrice du Centre d'études sur les médias, Université Laval and Rasmus Kleis Nielsen Director of Research, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford Attitudes towards news media and consumption behaviour in Canada pose a sort of conundrum. In general, Canadians have a positive view of journalism and relatively high trust in media, but on the other hand, they are little inclined to pay for digital news sources.According to the new 2019 Digital News Report, a survey conducted in 38 countries by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, only nine per cent of Canadian respondents say they’ve paid for online news in some way or another in the past year (digital subscription, one-off payment or purchase of a news app).Even fewer respondents, barely one per cent of our sample, made a donation to a media organization in the 12 months prior to the survey. This is not surprising, as non-profit news outlets that solicit donations from readers are still a rarity in the Canadian media landscape. And if people are unwilling to pay for news online, it is likely because free content is abundant. These findings raise questions about the potential impact of federal tax incentives for subscriptions and donations to online news. Both measures, supplemented by a refundable labour tax credit, are meant to sustain journalism in the highly competitive digital environment.Newspapers are struggling to develop new funding models to compensate for a 60 per cent decline in advertising revenue, with most ad money now going to large digital platforms. Will we see more paywalls and non-profit structures in the coming years, and will Canadians contribute more substantially to news as a result?Younger news consumers more likely to pay The survey suggests that the effect will be modest at first, but there is some potential for future growth. That’s because younger respondents are twice as likely to have paid for online news (18-34: 14 per cent; 35 and over: seven per cent). And more men (12 per cent) than women (six per cent) have paid for news. But even though one in five respondents who had not paid for news stated in the 2018 Digital News Report that they would consider doing so in the coming year, the percentage of those who did pay (nine per cent) remains identical in this year’s survey. And when asked if they had to choose a single form of paid online content, respondents were more likely to prioritize entertainment over news: 40 per cent would select a video service like Netflix, 10 per cent a music service like Spotify and only nine per cent would pick an online news subscription (only four per cent for Canadians aged 18-34).Trust and satisfaction About half (52 per cent) of Canadians told the survey they trust “most news, most of the time.” This figure has fluctuated somewhat since 2016, as the graph below illustrates.Respondents are more skeptical of news on social media and search engines than of news in general and especially the news they choose to consume.Canada, Ireland at the top for depth of coverage Canadians have a relatively positive view of the journalistic content they come across, particularly for breaking news and depth of coverage.Indeed, for this latter consideration, Canada and Ireland are at the very top of the list of countries included in the Digital News Report.Canadians are slightly less appreciative of the tone of coverage and relevance of topics selected for news stories.A majority (60 per cent) agree that the news media in their country helps them understand news stories — among the highest proportions in the 38 countries surveyed. Finally, most people seem to guard against disinformation, especially younger respondents.Two-thirds of Canadians (70 per cent) and three out of four respondents under 35 (76 per cent) have checked several sources to compare coverage of a story, decided not to share content when they were unsure of its accuracy or started relying more on sources of news that are considered more reputable, among other practices. We can only hope that these good habits will continue during this year’s federal election campaign in Canada, and beyond.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , June 14, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record And when asked if they had to choose a single form of paid online content, respondents were more likely to LENNOXVILLE ART GROUP Pricing DEAR EDITOR This letter, I hope, acts as a source of information for some, and a wake-up call for people in charge-namely, the board of directors of Elmwood Cemetery in Sherbrooke.Recently, I phoned the office requesting information to bury the ashes of a family member in the family plot. The price quoted for digging the small hole-no fanfare-was $500 weekdays, $650 weekends.I was shocked! So, I did a little research.Prices in some other locals range from as low as $50 to $350.The lot in question was purchased by our grandparents many years ago, along with an embellishment for life. Each year, this cemetery holds its financial campaign requesting donations.Perfectly acceptable and necessary. However, they should realize that maybe some families can not pay $500 or $650.More and more, ashes will be scattered and important paper trails to loved ones will not exist.RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED ELZADA SANGSTER ST-FRANCOIS XAVIER-DE-BROMPTON Letters A paltry number of Canadians are paying for online news 6 Mallory, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1M 2E2 FAX: 819-821-3179 E-MAIL: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com WEBSITE: www.sherbrookerecord.com SHARON MCCULLY PUBLISHER (819) 569-9511 MATTHEW MCCULLY ASSOCIATE EDITOR (819) 569-6345 GORDON LAMBIE ASSOCIATE EDITOR (819) 569-6345 SERGE GAGNON CHIEF PRESSMAN (819) 569-4856 JESSE BRYANT ADVERTISING MANAGER (450) 242-1188 DEPARTMENTS ACCOUNTING (819) 569-9511 ADVERTISING (819) 569-9525 CIRCULATION (819) 569-9528 NEWSROOM (819) 569-6345 KNOWLTON OFFICE 5B VICTORIA STREET, KNOWLTON, QUEBEC, J0E 1V0 TEL: (450) 242-1188 FAX: (450) 243-5155 PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS For print subscription rates, please call 819-569-9528 or email us at billing@sherbrookerecord.com ON-LINE SUBSCRIPTIONS QUEBEC: 1 YEAR 108.72 5.44 10.85 $ 1 2 5 .0 0 1 MONTH 9.78 0.49 0.98 $ 1 1 .2 5 Rates for out of Quebec and for other services available on request. The Record is published daily Monday to Friday.Back copies of The Record are available. The Record was founded on February 9, 1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.PM#0040007682 Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to The Record, 6 Mallory Street, Sherbrooke, QC J1M 2E2 Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA RECORD THE “Count your blessings not your troubles” COLUMNIST Friday , June 14, 2019 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Night By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Rabbi Boris Dolin 1) I have a cousin who graduated from university and became a teacher. He moved to Nunavet for an adventure for a year or two.He stayed for thiry-five years.I loved his stories about the north, but did not envy him, especially when I thought about the long endless days at certain times of the year.Midnight sun was not something I longed for.I enjoy the partnership of night and day, darkness and light.I love sunny days for activity, but also dark nights for rest and inspiration.Without night we would be unable to see shining stars and bright planets.Without night there would be no hopeful sunrises and colourful sunsets.Without darkness we would not appreciate the light.I remember reading a poem by Robert Frost, entitled “Acquainted with the night” which gave me inspiration in tough times. The psalmist once said “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning”.Each of us in life's journey have times of darkness and times of light. No one I know experiences peaceful mountaintop experiences all the time.Tough times help us appreciate the brighter ones.Dear readers, that is a verse to remember. We will all have dark nights occasionally, but hope will return with a new day.2) I have been one acquainted with the night I have walked out in rain—and back in rain.I have outwalked the furthest city light.I have looked down the saddest city lane.I have passed by the watchman on his beat And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet When far away an interrupted cry Came over houses from another street, But not to call me back or say good-bye; And further still at an unearthly height, One luminary clock against the sky Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.I have been one acquainted with the night.-Robert Frost 3) “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, Thou art with me.” When I think of the times of struggle and despair we all go through, sometimes named the dark night of the soul, I often think of this passage in the twenty-third psalm.I imagine that countless souls have taken comfort from these words, as have I.Although often, in prayer, we will hold up a desired outcome and pray that God will respond, I’m not at all sure that’s how God interacts with the material world. We might think we want some external force to come in and ‘save’ us from ourselves, but the twenty-third psalm speaks to a deeper need- that is to know that we are not alone in the world.Perhaps it is actually our human tendency to isolate ourselves in times of trouble that is the cause of our sense of being left alone.Sometimes our misery can overwhelm our senses and act as an interference to the still small voice within. When I was at one of my lowest points in life, my mother sent me a wall plaque that has little Holly Hobbie telling the cat : “Count your blessings not your troubles” It has travelled with me with every move and serves as a daily reminder. When life is bleak and all around we are surrounded by the night, we could do worse than to take the example of this ancient writer and give thanks for the blessings that we do have, as we wait for the dawn to arrive.4) Night has always felt to me as one the last remnants of true mystery we have in our daily lives. What a strange concept! As the darkness descends, the world slowly quiets down, the sights and sounds around us slowly sliding into the depth of evening. We lay ourselves down in bed, close our eyes and before we know it (we hope), we are in another world, one in which we are not fully in control. Our dreams take over, a whirlwind of memories, and strange encounters, a mix of joys and fears weaving in and out of our consciousness in those few precious hours before we wake. And then, if all works out, as the sun rises we wake leaving behind this mysterious world and move into the world of wakefulness. There are now so many scientific and medical studies which show that it is in fact this time of deep rest, these precious hours of sleep, that have an undeniable influence on so much else in our life.Physical health, memory, strength, work and even relationships are influenced so deeply by the quality of our sleep and what happens during the night.Only when the world shuts down, when darkness descends, when all of the business of our lives are put aside for a very real physical and mental quiet, things start to heal.It could even be said that night is what truly holds the world together. We may like to think that being productive or getting our work done is what is most important, but without night, without rest, and without this regular opportunity for renewal and growth, there would be no day and their would be no life.Night is a simple reminder that with all of the problems and challenges we may encounter in the world, night gives us that greatest blessing of renewal and rest. Each day may not be perfect, but if we know anything, when there is night, when there is darkness, it means that light is on its way.Close our eyes, breathe deep and await the sunrise and the opportunity for a new day.Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rabbi Boris Dolin, the spiritual leader of Congregation Dorshoi Emet in Hampstead Quebec TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture June 14 - June 20, 2019 It’s tea time again at Uplands Record Staff With a view to fostering its local presence and representing its many communities, MAtv, in collaboration with the Uplands Cultural and Heritage Centre, will launch a second season of Tea Time at Uplands on Monday, June 17 at 7 p.m.This English-language broadcast features personal interviews led by hosts Kathryne Owen and Wade Lynch, and filmed at Uplands Cultural and Heritage Centre, renowned for its English tea experience. Each show will offer viewers a glimpse into the rich and diversified heritage of the Townships, including local history, social and cultural life, as well as many other aspects of our unique Townships way of life. The participants will highlight the vitality and contributions of members of the Anglophone community who are engaged in various areas of activity in this region, all the while enjoying English tea at Uplands, a much-loved Townships tradition. In our second season, the hosts will be taking tea in the company of twenty fascinating and passionate people engaged in such diverse areas as the performing arts, community life, science, entrepreneurship and social involvement; one episode will even be dedicated to those who helped make Uplands the enchanting site it is today! Bishop’s and Champlain student artists Record Staff Roughly 25 student artists from Bishop’s University and Champlain College Lennoxville will be featured at the Stanstead Art Gallery Le Vieux Forgeron for its first exhibition of the summer season. All the artists participating in the show are students in either a Fine Arts course or program at Bishops University or the Visual Arts pre-university program at Champlain College. While all students have participated in the annual art exhibitions held on- campus, for many students the upcoming show at Le Vieux Forgeron will be their first off-campus show. The exhibition, which will include painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, installation, metal work, mixed media, and photography, was the brainchild of Tosha Callaway, a former Visual Arts student at Champlain College, currently studying at Bishop’s University.Callaway, who works at the gallery, contacted her former teacher Cynthia Touchette, chairperson of Visual Arts Program at Champlain, who who agreed to help with the project.Regine Neu- man, BU Departmental Technician who often organizes shows for the students And Dr.Jim Benson, the Chairperson and a Full Professor in the Fine Arts Department at BU, also helped get the project off the ground According to Calloway, the show will not only provide the perfect opportunity for these new up and coming artists to exhibit their work within the Eastern Townships, but it will also allow other community members to experience the young talent which is fostered within local post-secondary establishments. She credited the active organization of all of the staff, faculty members and students involved in the project for their hard work in selecting and transporting the pieces for the exhibition, which will open on Thursday, June 20.A vernissage will be held on Saturday, June 22 from 5to 7 p.m.at the gallery. The show will run until July 14.Le Vieux Forgeron, located at 240a Rue Duf- ferin in Stanstead, is open from 11a.m.To 6 p.m.Thursday to Sunday. If you are considering taking up hiking for the multiple benefits of great exercise, spectacular vistas, wildlife sightings and the serenity of your moment with Mother Nature, welcome to the club.Your provincial tourist office will have brochures on the best known trails and their level of difficulty. There is much to consider before heading out the door, such as wearing the proper clothes and footwear for the terrain you will be navigating. In case of injury, emergency supplies like bandages, matches, flash light, Swiss knife, compass and windbreaker should be carried in your backpack, along with a whistle, water, and extra food.Carefully consider which food types to bring as the potential energy they provide could be beneficial toward the end of a long hike.Registered holistic nutritionist Karina Ho shares some valuable nutrition information and tips to help fuel and prepare you on your next adventure. As an avid hiker and snowboarder herself, she aims to find healthier ways to stay energized on those long days on the mountains. Her inspiration in nutrition comes from her athletic background in gymnastics and circus acrobatics, using nutrition to achieve optimal training and performance. For those who want to hike for one hour as opposed to those spending most of the day hiking, Ho said, “The length of your hike will definitely determine how much food you should bring with you.If you’re out for a full day, you’ll probably want to bring a lunch as well as snacks.Sandwiches and wraps make great lunches that are easy to carry with you.Fill them with a variety of vegetables and include some protein, such as leftover meats or hummus.Pair with some fresh veggies such as carrot and celery sticks, bell peppers or snap peas and fresh fruit for a well balanced meal, and get ready to enjoy that meal in the presence of the beautiful outdoors.” She continues, “Snacks are great for hikes lasting just a few hours and for your longer days to eat outside of your lunch. You should avoid sugar filled granola bars and protein bars and stick with whole foods. These bars market themselves as quick, easy, and healthy but often include far too much added sugar. You’re better off opting for whole foods – think fresh veggies and fruit, and mixed nuts and seeds! The veggies and fruit will give you some much needed energy, while the nuts and seeds will help you feel satisfied until your next snack break!” Ho says hikes lasting just an hour should be fine without any snacks if you’re properly fueled before your hike.“Hiking is literally full of unexpected twists and turns and you should always be prepared in case your hike goes longer than you anticipated,” Ho cautioned, adding, “Always bring a snack or two with you in case you’re out longer than you planned.” Eating breakfast is always a good idea, especially on the day of a hike.Ho suggests a well balanced meal with a mix of protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables such as a breakfast wrap with eggs, avocado, vegetables and salsa or oatmeal with fruit and nuts.Don’t forget to hydrate.Ho says, “Bring lots of water with you and drink regularly! Especially on those hot summer days, if you are hiking in areas without a lot of tree cover you can lose a lot of water from your body when you sweat.Drink even more water on these days as it’s very important to replace that lost water and rehydrate.” Always dress for the weather conditions, bring sunscreen and insect repellant.Bear spray could be a welcome addition to your backpack, though hopefully one doesn’t ever get close enough to find out.Christine Blanchette is a TV host and producer of Run With It, a monthly running, fitness and lifestyle program.Printed with permission from Optimyz magazine.www.runwithit.ca Local Sports For those who want to hike for one hour as opposed to those spending most of the day hiking, Ho said, “The length of your hike will definitely determine how much food you should bring with you.Friday , June 14, 2019 Page 17 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind Getting proper nutrition during your hike will boost your performance COURTESY Blues win 1st Stanley Cup, beating Bruins 4-1 By Jimmy Golen THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Blues goalie Jordan Binnington was waiting patiently, as NHL rookies learn to do, while the Stanley Cup was passed from teammate to teammate across the recently conquered ice of the new Boston Garden.Thirteen St.Louis players took their turn with the iconic trophy, raising it above their heads, lowering it for a kiss, posing for a picture. Finally, understudy Jake Allen gave the starter a little shove, and the Game 7 star timidly skated forward to receive the Cup and cap off one of the great rookie runs in NHL history.Binnington stopped 32 shots, and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Ryan O'Reilly scored for the fourth straight game Wednesday night to lead the Blues to a 4-1 victory over Boston in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final and their first NHL championship.O'Reilly added an assist, Alex Pietrangelo had a goal and an assist and Brayden Schenn and Zach Sanford also scored for St.Louis, which had the worst record in the league in early January but won 30 of their final 49 regular-season games.“Once we pulled it together, we were tough to beat,'' said coach Craig Berube, who took over when Mike Yeo was fired in November. He is the fourth coach in the past 11 years hired in midseason to lead his team to the NHL title.Behind Binnington, the Blues eliminated the Jets in six games, the Stars in seven and then knocked out the Sharks in six to reach the final for the first time since 1970.That year, the Blues lost in Boston when Bobby Orr flew through the air after scoring his Cup-clincher _ a goal that is commemorated in bronze outside the building. In a physical series that left Bruins captain Zdeno Chara with a broken jaw and saw two Blues suspended for head hits, the teams took turns winning the first three games, with Binnington getting pulled from a 7-2 loss in Game 3.St.Louis won the next two to move one win from the title, but Boston erupted for five goals in Game 6 on Sunday to force the series to the limit.Boston had home-ice advantage, along with a huge edge in Stanley Cup and Game 7 experience: Five Bruins remained from the team that beat Vancouver in seven to win the franchise's sixth title in 2011, then returned to the final two years later. But it was the rookie Binnington _ not the 2014 Vezina Trophy winner Tuukka Rask _ who took a shutout into the final minutes Wednesday. The Blues were never really in danger after scoring twice in the final few minutes of the first period.“He bounced back.We knew he would,'' Pietrangelo said.“Unbelievable first period. His confidence, his swagger, his belief in himself _ unbelievable.'' Rask, who had been the favourite for the post-season MVP if the Bruins had won, stopped 16 shots. The Bruins out- shot St.Louis 33-20, but Matt Grzelcyk scored Boston's only goal. The Blues went ahead at the end of the first period on goals from O'Reilly and Pietrangelo about three minutes apart. The second period was scoreless, then Schenn made it 3-0 with 8:35 to play and Sanford put it out of reach before the Bruins spoiled Binnington's bid for a shutout.Returning to the site of their last appearance in the final, the Blues won for the third time in Boston this series and an NHL record-tying 10th time in the post-season.O'Reilly won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the post-season MVP.He is the first player since Wayne Gretzky to score in four consecutive Stanley Cup Final games.“The guy was a beast all playoffs,'' Schenn said.“He deserves it.He's a hell of a player.Binnington's a beast. What a team to be a part of.'' Boston will have to console itself with the two major sports championships it has already won in the past year, or the dozen trophies that have been chauffeured through Boston in a parade of the city's iconic, amphibious Duck Boats.Three of them have come at St.Louis' expense, including the cathartic 2004 Red Sox World Series title that ended an 86-year drought.“They've been a historical team. They've won so many Cups,'' Blues de- fenceman Vince Dunn said.“We came into the season with a lot of hopes, and we let each other down a bit for the start of the season. But there was no doubt in our minds that we couldn't come back and come out on top.'' Olympic gold medallist Aly Raisman and Julian Edelman waved a banner before the game while wearing David Ortiz jerseys; the Red Sox slugger is recuperating just a mile or so away from an assassination attempt in his native Dominican Republic.Retired Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling also was in the crowd, wearing his World Series ring and a Bruins jersey.Portable party Rob Gronkowski also made an appearance on the video board. And the Bruins responded, dominating for long stretches of time except in the way that mattered most. The Blues had just one shot on goal heading into the final minutes of the first period, but they scored first when O'Reilly deflected a shot from Jay Bouwmeester into the net. Then with just 8 seconds left in the period and Bruins forward Brad Marchand tentative on a line change, Pietrangelo beat Rask to make it 2-0. husband for 50 years. We met spontaneously, and I moved in with him soon afterward. He was different from the norm.He was smart, always outgoing and had many great friends.I fell deeply in love.We got married after a few years together and began to build our careers in businesses, where we both became respected and successful in our ?elds.Over those years, we also partied excessively, and hung out with people who would eventually end up in prison. We moved beyond our youthful acts and raised a family. But he never stopped bragging about his earlier, danger-?lled exploits to anyone and everyone. And his stories have grown to new exaggerated versions or downright lies.I also painfully discovered that he considers himself a ladies’ man, and has been secretly wining and dining other women. As much as I worked to make our lives better and make myself more attractive, I became more and more depressed.I felt I wasn’t good enough.I confronted him several times about all of these issues and nothing ever improved.Through an “aha” moment and research, I came to discover that I married a sociopath.I have been trying to ?x someone who cannot be ?xed.He ignores my attempts to improve our relationship because he doesn’t care. He’s not wired for it.I am ?nally working through all of this through therapy, particularly mindfulness meditation.I feel like a new person.I’m writing this because the symptoms have been there all along, and I was too busy, tired or ashamed to deal with it until now.I wish more information had been available to me earlier in my life about the prospects for a loving relationship with a sociopath.I found that he may often say and do the right things, but it is all an act and short-lived.With no regrets, I am now moving on with the second half of my time on this earth! I am happier and really enjoy life.— Breathing Free Dear Breathing: And I am so happy for you.I appreciate your sharing your story here so that it might be a light for someone who’s in the dark, as you were.Dear Annie: I was a little disappointed by your advice to “Bent But Not Broken in Missouri” who started her letter: “My husband and I moved to another state following our retirements a few years ago.We moved to a resort town six hours away from my brother Billy and his wife, Patty.” The writer continued to complain that family was not coming to see them or visit them with any frequency.I agree with your advice that she should focus on her friends and not on her family, but she also must see the ?ngers pointed back at herself. If you choose to move six hours away after retirement, you should assume you’ll be making frequent trips back “home,” if you intend to stay in touch with your relatives there.Your relatives aren’t required to suddenly plan vacations around you simply because you and yours decide to move to a new location after retirement.I suggest that before those who move away become upset with relatives who stayed home, they start making plans to return to their roots to keep the relationships intact and not expect visits to their new locale in return.— Goes Both Ways Dear Goes Both Ways: You make a fair point, and you invoke a favorite aphorism of mine, “When you point one ?nger, there are three ?ngers pointing back to you.” Thanks for offering another perspective.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
