pleuro-pneumonia amongst the quarantine cattle, ateted that two weeks ago a high-priced Galloway bull belonging to Mr.McCrea, of Guelph, showed signs of indisposition. The man in charge Aid not consider the case a sufficiently serious one to warrant it being brought to the potice of the Superintendent, Dr Couture, Immediately on learning the ( nature of the.disease he coneulted with Dr.McEachran and notified the Department of Agriculture, when it was decided to immediately slaughter the affected animal. The post-mortem examination fully confirmed Dr.Couture’s diagnosis of the case. The quarantine authorities have had no difficulty in tracing the origin of the disease. The bull before referred to was one of a herd of 55 Galloway cattle urchased by Mr, McCrea from Messrs, igger & Son, of Chspelton, Scotland, amongst whose stock pleuro-pneumonia declared itself about a month after the departure of McCrea’s herd. Thus the disease must have been communicated to this herd before it left Scotland, whish was about nine weeks ago, Mr.McCren’s ttle having been now in quarantine about Sven rocks, The whole of the Messrs, Biggar’s stock in Scotland has been destroyed by the local authorities, Avother animal of Mr.MeCrae’s herd and ono not then showing any symptoms of pleuro-pnemonia was slaughtered on ‘Wednesday last and found to be affected.Since that day some thirty other cattle of the same herd have shown unmistakable symptoms of the disease, It has been resolved to slaughter the whole herd and this drastic measure will Be put into execution on Wednesday next and following days. The animals will be cremated as quickly as killed and the delay in slaughtering is due to the necessity for the erection of a kiln sufficiently large for the disposal of so many gisughtered cattle.Mr.MeCrea’s herd consists of cattle valued at fully $750 each, The law provides thatthe pro- prieters shall be wholly or partially indemnified by the Government for loss sustained by cattle slaughtered by the uarantine authorities, The sheds occupied by the infected cattle end evorything that came into contact with them will also be burned and none of the cattlenow in quarantine will be allowed to leave until two months more beyond the expiration of their ordinary quarantine term of three months.Although there is believed to be no possibility of other herds becoming affected, all cattle arriving by the same ship are being kept distant from those brought out on other vessels, with the exception of such cattle as may now be en route for Quebec. No others will be admitted to the Levis quarantine, Cablegrams have been sent to Liverpool directing that all further shipments this seasou be sent to Halifax where there is also a quarantine establishment. There are at present some 340 cattle in the Levis quarantine valued at $75,000 to $100,000, but it is confidently believed that nene will take the disease outside of the affected herd and such-other eattle as arrived by the same ship. The latter include a herd of 35 polled Angus animals belonging to Mr.Andrew Allan aud valued at over $10,000, None of this herd bave as yet developed symptoms of the disease though it is scarcely ox- pected by Dr, Couture that they can escape. As soon as pneumonia declares itself among them the whole herd will be slaughtered and cremated. The authorities have not the slightest fear that the disease will spread beyond the limits of the quarantine station.PO LATESK FROM OTTAWA.Tracking the Train Wreckers—Peor sonal—A interview, said he believed that the land purshase question would never he settled except on Michael Davitt’s nationalization principles of just compensation to the actual holder rather than on the principles of Henry George. He commended the scheme of Dr, Dale as set forth in the Contemporary Review of June, accepting Mr, Gladstone’s bill as à minimum starting point for the establishment of a statutory parliament in Dublin, and to leave it an open question with the people of England, Wales and Scotland to decide whether there shall be one, two, or three, Parliaments.Archbishop Walsh declared that the statement that the Pope disapproved of the attitude of the Irish clergy towards the Nationalists was founded upon malice, It was only necessary, he said, to read the Moniteur di Rome and the Osservatore Romano to see that the Irish cause is safe with the Pope.A CONSERVATIVE M, P.ELECTED, LONDON, August 16,—An election was held in Newton, commander of a cruiser, affirms that no Americans are fishing inside of the three mile limit; but the Examiner, the Dominion Government organ, pub- lishee a letter from a well informed correspondent stating that in the North Bay one hundred and twenty-five sails of American mackerel vessels are practically doing what they please. The other day the “Howlett” chased à schooner ashore, only to find she was a Nova Scotian, The writer hoped the Yankee war vessels would blow the “ grrant humbugs, the Canadian cutters, to the devil.” Sol Jacobs, who has just returned for a second fare, was fishing in- gide the limit on Monday. The fish are plentiful in two fathoms of water. The Examiner loudly donounces the Government, and says the Minister of Fisheries has mistaken the men appointed captains, and they are not carrying out their instructions.Captain Scott is in Halifax qualifying men for captains and mates, instead of protecting the fisheries, Meanwhile Canadian fishermen are profoundly dissatisfied, The Government can only allay this dissatis- faciion by asserting the supremacy of Canada in Canadian waters. They can only do this by appointing new captains to cruisers or compelling the present ones to do their duty. The cruisers made a good showing at the beginning, but now that the Yankees are stealing the fish by wholesale, the cruisers are simply playing Montreal Stock Market. The stock market opened this morning around Friday’s prices, but it fell off owing to investment stock being put upon the market, one thousand shares having been disposed of during the day, The effect of this was shown by the decline in prices, the market being weaker, except for City Passenger, which is now looked upon as a fancy stock and respecting which predictions are out of place. It is to be hoped, however, that buyers will not have any reason to rue their washness.Time alone will tell.In bank stocks to-day Montreal sold at 2163@217, the closing quotations being 217 asked 2162 bid.Peoples changed hands at par.Toronto sold at 204}@2043, and Commerce at 123, 1223 and 1223.In the miscellaneous stocks, Montreal Telegraph gold down from 131% to from that in vogue in the home of lacrosse, consequently they met our boys at a disadvantage. The ocean voyage, too, and the round of festivities they have gone through siace first landing on the shores of America have not been exactly the kind of training required. The team is composed of courteous, kindly gentlemen, who expresse themselves as delighted with their hospit¥ble reception in Montreal, and certainly they have been given a warm welcome, not oniy by the athletic portion of the community, but by the citizens at large. We wish the team every success in the matches they have yet to play on this side of the water, and a pleasant and safe return to the shores of Erin.te The great cricket tournament opened on the grounds of the Montreal Cricket Club yesterdayy afterncon, when the West Indian gentlemen players met the Montreal team for the first time. The day was everything but favorable for good cricket and after little more than an Lour’s play the stumps were drawn and the game postponed until 10 o’clock this morning. It was simply a batsmau’s game, as the heavy rain was all against good bowling or fielding, this accounts for the large score run up by the Montrealers with the loss of ouly five wickets. An account of the day’s play will bs found in another portion of our columns.— We desire to call attention to the letter of a correspondent which will be found in another portion of .our sporting columns. The letter is in reference fo the superfluity of accidents to the sailing craft at the Valois regatia on Saturday. With the correspondent we wish to cast no reflections on the management of the Valois Boating Club, but he, the correspondent, hits the nail on the head every time when he says that at all aquatic events safeguards should be provided against accidents as far as possible and some steam launch or other kost should be always in readiness at such events to go to the assistance of the crew of any craft that is unfortunate Adams Humpty Dumpty Pantomime and Specialty Company at both performances at the Royal yesterday, and that the company fully came up to the promises made in the advance notices was testified by the frequent and merited applause that greeted the performers in the several acts. The pantomime company is a first-class one in every respect, and cur theatre-goers have never witnessed the eccentricities of a better Humpty Dumpty than ia presented by Mr.Adams.Miss Laura Hanlon meskes a capital Columbine, and the stage setting and new tricks introduced are both attractive and amusing, The feature of the entertain ment is undoubtedly the astonishing acrobatic performance of the four Nelsons, who are the only rivals to the great Cragg Brothers, who found such favor with Montreal audiences.Miss Adele Wilson, the charming little lady who does such wonderful things on a revolving globe, at once found favor with the audience as did Miss May Templeton in her Tyrolean specialty.Miss Forgardus and her troupe of performing pigeons were equally well received, as were Mr.James Rielly in his inimitable rendition of the flower song, and the Powers Brothers in their fancy and burlesque skating.Oa the whole the performance given by this company is well worth witnessing and those who wish to pass an enjoyable afternoon or evening cannot do better than pay a visit to the Royal during the present right to have their interests represented, but at the game time they wust not ask too much.Let them begin with one, and especially let them not oppose Mr.McShane whe had always been favorable to workingmen and did allio his power to help them, The principal object of their efforts ought to be to drive from power those who had not worked for them, and not to ignore the services of their friends.TAKEN FROM THE STREETS.—À little boy was yesterday picked up by the police who was running about the streets homeless in an exhausted state for the want of food.On being brought to the walked out to visit the graves of relatives in Mount Royal Cemetery, going round the base of the mountain, On entering the cemetery they noticed two young gentlemen who appeared to be watching them.As the men were respectably dressed and had the ap< pearance of gentlemen, the ladies paid no particular attention to their presence. On leaving the cemetery the men were again noticed, and after the ladies had been a short distance on their homeward way they became aware that they were being chased by the fellows in question. The ladies started to run and the two individuals did the same. The race continued for some distance, when the ladies, by this time half dead with fright, saw two men working at the road.As they could not speak French and the men could not speak English they were unable to make known the cause of their fright. They waited near the men until they thougut their persecutors were gone when they again started for home. They had not gone far when they discovered that the fellows, who had been in hiding, were again after them.Another race mgain ensued until the mountain elevator was reached. The ladies then waited until they saw two gentlemen going towards the city, and then feeiing safe in such company managed to reach their home, The two scoundrels were pussed on the way but offered no further molestation. This incident ia but a further proof of the “necessity of better police protection in the vicinity of the Mountain Park.pe THE SALVATION ARMY.Their Right to March Through the Streets and to Hold Opon Air Meetings to be Tested in the Court, The police seem determined to put down the Salvation Army. They have arrested six of their members on two separate oc- cagions. The first arrest was made on Saturday night, The account which Lieut.Middleton gives of the affair was that the Army was marching up Craig street and when near the cab stand near St.Lawrence Main street one of the cab- men drove his horse into the procession, endangering the women. One of the soldiers seized the horses’s rein to prevent the girls from being hurt.He was immediately arrested by the police patrol, one of whom it is alleged struck him on the back ot the head with his baton.Another goldier of the army, Sergt.Fraser, was arrested, and a third man, Butters, whose only offence was to advise Mr, Fraser to go to the station quietly, was also taken prisoner.Butters has no counection whatever with the Army.Un the way to the station it 18 alleged that one of the policemen struck Fraser on St.James street with his club. The second arrest was made on Sunday morning. The Army, as it has been doing for some time past on Suudays, was holding & prayer meeting on the slip near Allan's wharf. They had never been interfered with by the authorities before and on Sundays they say there is no thoroughfares on the slip. The water police have often witnessed these open-air meetings and when it was necessary have ‘interfered to protect them from anuoyance. On last Sunday Capt.Marshall was in the act of praying, the soldiers being grouped around him, when the police patrol broke in upon them and caught hold of the Captain’s hands a8 they were raised and clapped the handcuffs on his wrists, Besides Captain Marshall, Col.~Sergt.Thomas and Major Margetts were arzested. All six men have been released on bail and the Army officers are determined to test the case iu the courts, In the meantime they do not intend to march through the streeis or to hold open-air meetings in the city. The Salvationists complain that the flag and tambourines which were taken from them when they were impriconed have not beea returned, — HERE AND THERE.Charles Arcaund, the boatman who saved the lives of Messrs.Seguin and Chalette, a few days ago, is reported to have saved
