NuHab Centre had withdrawn its application for a zoning change which would permit the rehab to move to 17 Victoria St., in Knowlton.NuHab is a mental health and addictions rehabilitation facility located in rural Ascot Corner, some 12 kilometres northeast of Sherbrooke. The centre had said it wanted to move to Knowlton, possibly as early as this summer.NuHab’s decision to withdraw its application followed on the heels of a petition submitted to town hall on May 14 which opposed the zoning change.“Information obtained by the public petition clearly indicate that a majority of eligible voters would have voted against the zoning change in a referendum,” said Burcombe, in part.“Given this situation, the NuHab Centre decided to withdraw their application for the zoning change for 17 Victoria St.” “We respect the democratic right of citizens to express themselves to decide, in this case, what kind of institution can be installed in their all the while tugging even the toughest heartstrings.Their six-month mission to serve as ambassadors for orphans in their country and all of Africa is one month shy of completion as they travel Canada from west to east. With a mixed media performance of song, praise, testimonials, and energetic dance, the audience of more than 200 people learned about the struggles of thousands of children just like those who were entertaining them that evening. They learned about Watoto, a village of group homes located in Kampala, Uganda, whose mission is to rescue, raise, and rebuild the lives of marginalized children, babies, and women, almost all who have been orphaned.Brian Mwalca, leader of this particular troop, is on his fifth tour, this being the first time in Canada. He says that there are seven Hughes return to Theatre Lac Brome in a production of Don Quixote de Lac Brome by Eric Overmyer.By Olivia Ranger-Enns BCN correspondent In about a month, the doors of Knowl-ton’s Lac Brome theatre will open wide for theatre lovers. And it’s an important year for the establishment, a milestone in fact, given that the theatre has been offering art to the Eastern Townships for 30 years.Director Nicholas Pynes shared some information about the upcoming events highlighting the anniversary. In 30 years, you could say that the theatre has come a long way.Back in 1986, a modestly staged summer theatre program was set up at the Glen Mountain Ski Lodge, where the Lac Brome theatre began its professional debut after the closing of the Brae Manor Playhouse. Now it is time to look back, having entertained tens of thousands of visitors.“Some actors who have been with the theatre for years are coming back for productions, which is great,” said Pynes. These actors include Emma Stevens and Nathalie Choquette.“In that respect, it’s kind of like a retrospective year,” said Pynes.Fun is expected for June 20, when Music from New York City with Vintage Wine will act as the season opening event. With champagne glasses in hand, visitors will listen to interpretations of groovy classics like the Drifters, Dion & the Belmonts, the Shirelles, Ray Charles, Simon & Garfunkel, Lovin’ Spoonful and George Gershwin, among others. The evening, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., comes at a price of $60.The 2015 season will officially kick off on July 11 with Don Quixote, a play adaption of the Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes, which follows a hapless nobleman trying to revive chivalry but losing his sanity in the process. This production pushes the envelope in a number of ways, addressing our society’s relationship with theatre, television and musicals in general. The production will bring together three quarters of the cast from last season’s hit production of 39 Steps: Davide Chiazzese, Mary Harvey, and Mike Hughes.Other plays such as the new production Her Point of View, featuring Nathalie Choquette, and Always Patsy Cline featuring Laura Tinsdale are scheduled.“Bowser and Blue is another perennial favourite,” said Pynes. This closing event, scheduled for September 5 at 8 p.m., can be appreciated with beers and a barbecue.Another important scheduled event is the Sunday night bilingual cinema series taking place at 7 p.m.“We have the Cowansville cinema’s Princess old seats, so it makes sense to be showing some movies,” said Pynes. The event will go on for a total of nine weeks.“People will be able to bring their own popcorn,” said Pynes, who has invited laughologist and filmmaker Albert Nerenberg on July 5.Nerenberg will be guiding participants on a tour of laughter, showcasing a collection of laughter shorts and live demonstrations of non-orthodox laughter phenomena.Titled “The Art of Laughter,” the evening promises to be rife in discussions as Nerenberg will tackle the concept that laughter is not only a language, but also an art form and even a new kind of exercise.Tickets at the door cost $5 and 10 tickets are priced at $40.On July 12, Heavy Metal with Gerald Potterton, an NFB animation classic, will be aired. Finally, on July 19 The Trouble with Experts with Josh Freed will be displayed on wide screen. The full Sunday repertoire will be disclosed over time on the website and the last movie will be shown on Labour Day.“The 30th anniversary season will bring back some of the past, while creating memories for the future,” said Pynes, who highlighted the intimate setting of the theatre as a bonus.“It’s not like Place des Arts,” he said, comparing the theatre to Montreal’s theatre which can seat up to almost 3,000 people.“The theatre has helped launch numerous young careers while also providing an intimate setting for internationally known performers and the public.” The theatre is located at 9, Mont Echo in Knowlton. For tickets and reservations, visit the theatre’s website at
