Economy doing well, says Leitao The Canadian Press Quebec Pif Classic fills the skies Softball tourney sends home runs and fireworks into the air over Fleurimont Despite predictions that Canada is headed for recession, Quebec is in a good position to withstand the economic turbulence because of lower oil prices and a dropping dollar, Finance Minister Carlos Leitao said Friday. The first quarter of the current fiscal year was positive for the Quebec economy and the next three months should be even better, he said.“No question of a recession in Quebec,” Leitao said during a conference call with reporters.“The economy is doing better than last year.We see an acceleration in growth.” Statistics Canada reported dismal gross domestic product numbers this week - with April being the fourth straight month showing decline. That led to both Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Desjardins predicting that Canada will soon officially be in a recession, which is defined by two consecutive quarters of GDP contraction.Leitao said any recession would be localized in provinces hurt by the drop in prices for fossil fuels, such as Alberta and Saskatchewan.Lower oil prices and a dropping dollar should benefit Quebec’s manufacturing and export sectors, he added.“Central Canada - Quebec and Ontario - are once again becoming the economic engines of the country,” said Leitao.Leitao also announced that Quebec’s 2014-15 deficit clocked in at $1.8 billion, $539 million less than estimated in the budget last March. The province is projecting a Lennoxvtlle Camp-outs, hikes and adventures have long been an important part of Boy Scout and Girl Guide activities.Fortunately for the scout troops and guide companies of the Eastern Townships, there is never a lack of potential excursions into the great outdoors.Unsurprisingly, the documents and photographs from the Guides and Scouts of the past are filled with proof of the excitement and adventure of these occasions. In the early years, the Scouts made do by camping in the fields of generous farmers. The first official Scout camp owned by the Sherbrooke & District Boy Scouts was at Lake Alymer (known as Camp Tweedsmuir). In 1947, the local Scout association decided to find another camp location and, after some consideration, a 70-acre property on Lake Lovering was purchased, which remains today as the Association’s local camp. The numerous lakes and mountains of the area have always provided ample opportunities for Scouts and Guides to make lasting memories. In the account of a Scout leader from around the 1940s, he recollects an instance when taking a dip in Lake Massawippi. The boys - who were without bathing suits - cheerfully decided to stand up out of the water to wave at a passenger train that was passing by as their leader tried to quickly persuade them to “get back down!” The earliest camp held by the Lennoxville Girl Guides was in the 1920s on Lake Massawippi, not far from where the Ripplecove Hotel is presently situated.Anthémis Bay, on Lake Mem-phremagog, was another common site for Guide campouts in the 1930s.In 1949, the Sherbrooke Division acquired its own camp property on Bromp-ton Lake, which was known as Camp Rainier until it was sold in 1976.Among the memorable outings, one Guide remembered many snowy hikes on skis, when the girls would carry sandwiches in their pockets to lay a trail through the woods.Jody Robinson, archivist 819-822-9600, ext.2261 etrc2@ubishops.ca ETRC ARCHIVES ETRC ARCHIVES Girl Guides (probably completed, at a cost of $900,000.Gordon Lambie Sherbrooke The new roof on Sherbrooke’s Place Nikitotek outdoor theatre is now complete, with just under a week left before the venue welcomes its first performance of the season.Measuring 24 metres (80 feet) wide and 154 metres (504 feet) across, the roof is the result of 6,000 hours of work in the factory in which it was built and an additional 1,500 hours of installation time.It is built to withstand 145,000 kilograms (320,000 pounds) of pressure and completely covers the seating area of the theatre.Destination Sherbrooke, the tourism promotion agency that oversees the management of the venue, held a special ceremony Thursday under (ironically) sunny skies to recognize and celebrate the addition of a roof that some critics of the the- atre have said should have been there from day 1.“This is not an expense it is an investment,” said city councilor and Destination Sherbrooke president Remi Demers, “There is a difference.” The roof was paid for by Sherbrooke, but the $900,000 capital cost of the construction by is set to be repaid through a public-private partnership between Jonquière-based presenter Quebec-Issime and the city. The amount is to be paid back over the course of 10 years, at $90,000 per year, during which time the company has signed an agreement to hold summer performances in the venue.“I think that the approach that Destination Sherbrooke developed is worth reproducing, and I hope it will serve as a model not just for Sherbrooke, but throughout Quebec in these times when public funds everywhere are stretched thin,” said Sherbrooke’s mayor, Bernard Sévigny, highlighting the value he sees in public-private partnerships.“It is extremely reassuring to be able to work with a producer on the level of Quebec-Issime.” Robert Doré, president of Quebec-Issime, called the work a “remarkable result,” explaining that he was unable to understand, in coming last year, how an otherwise-great amphitheatre could expect to operate without a roof to keep out the rain. With the roof allowing for rain-or-shine performance, he said he expects excellent returns this summer.Over the last five years, almost 68,000 spectators have come to Sherbrooke to see a show at Place Nikitotek, resulting in stated economic returns of $5.5 million.According to Demers, half of all spectators in the summer of 2014 came from outside the Sherbrooke area, and nine out of ten came to the city specifically to see the show.Cowboys, from Willie to Dolly, the same show put on by Quebec-Issime in Sherbrooke last summer, will be presented with some additions and changes at Place Nikitotek from July 8 to Aug.15.Though road reconstruction has disrupted traffic around Dufferin Street for more than a month, the Nikitotek site is currently accessible via Montreal Street.Construction in the area is expected to be finished by July 17.Patrick Watson to headline Sherblues & Folk Festival By Gordon Lambie Sherbrooke California Born and Hudson-raised musician Patrick Watson will be rolling into town with his band later this week as one of the headlining acts of the annual Sherblues and Folk festival. The festival, a summer tradition in the city, will offer a range of musical performances both free and ticketed, in venues across downtown starting with a free concert at the outdoor stage at Place de la Cité, behind Sherbrooke’s courthouse tonight.Watson’s show, which will be focused on work from the band’s fifth and most recent album, Love Songs for Robots, will be among the last of the festival and will take place next Saturday at the Granada Theatre.“I don’t know any festival the sticks to its genre anymore,” Watson said, laughing as he added that his experimental musical style has often been seen as hard to classify.Though he admitted that the band’s work could be considered to have folk or blues elements sometimes, Watson said he wouldn't necessarily claim either as a predominant style for his work.Swinging through Quebec on a tour that will see the band travel across Canada, the United States and Europe by the end of the year, Watson reflected on a 20-year history of playing shows in Sherbrooke saying that he has quite an established following in the city and surrounding areas, built up over years of playing first in local bars and then the larger venues.Though he argued that there is no major difference be- tween playing a show in one place versus another and does not play favourites, the musician shared that he’s fond of the local atmosphere In the Townships.“It comes down to the same sort of thing whether you’re playing in Sherboolce or in New York,” Watson said, expressing that in his experience the differences between performances Cont’d on Page 5 Richmond Meals on Wheels receives $250 from Oddfellows By Claudia Villemaire The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Monday, July 6, 2015 Page 5 Meet Your Neighbours By Matthew McCully Lennoxville At the grocery store, most consumers will look at the price of meat and how it looks in the package to make their choice.Very few people wonder about the life the animal led before arriving at the grocery story. On the highway, it’s commonplace to pass a big triple decker truck full of pics and think, “oh look, pigs.” Probably out on a Sunday drive, definitely not headed to the slaughter house. There is a disconnect between consumers and the food they eat.Luigi Faucitano, a meat scientist working at the experimental farm in Lennoxville, focuses his research on the ambiguous space between an animal’s last moments of life and the dinner table.“I’m becoming popular,” Faucitano said, following the release of a video about his research on YouTube that has gained interest from farmers in Texas.Originally from Bologna, Italy, Faucitano began his studies in Canada 15 years ago.“Europe is more strict,” Faucitano said, referring to the handling of animals. His research, taking place at the Dairy and Swine Research and Development Centre (more commonly known as the Experimental Farm), focuses on the last 24 hours of life of a pig before slaughter.Faucitano is interested in the stress level of the pig in its last moments of life, and the effect it has on meat quality.“Throughout an animal’s life, you can make all kinds of mistakes, and you can compen- Think you work with pigs?Luigi Faucitano actually does sate and recover,” he said. The last moments of life are considered an irreversible phase, Faucitano explained.“When you make a mistake in this phase, there is no way to correct it.” The average consumer usually makes their choice based on the colour of the meat, or the amount of water in the package, Faucitano said.Even a pig with the best genetics, raised on the best feed, with access to pasture, if stressed in its last moments, will translate to an unappealing product in the store. In some cases, even if it looks good, the stress level of the pig could result in lost proteins and minerals.“When you buy a 100-gram pork chop, if it’s not good quality, you’re really only eating half of it,” Faucitano said. The current dilemmas in meat quality are the result of the changing landscape of farming in general and the industrialization of meat production, Faucitano said.In some instances, pigs are left in the dark for most of their lives. Some have little to no interaction with humans. In their last 24 hours of life, they are brought outside into the light, and forced, by humans they have never met, up a ramp they have never negotiated onto a truck they have never seen. The average ride on one of those “pot-belly trailers” is two hours in Quebec, but could be up to eight hours in Western Canada, because of the closure of smaller slaughterhouses in favour of larger processing plants, according to Faucitano.Europe regulates transportation.Canada only has codes of practice currently, he said. When they arrive, they have to negotiate the ramp a second time, meet more strange humans, and then they are put into strange pens, often with pigs from different farms they are unfamiliar with, which can cause fighting.Pigs are slaughtered in one of two ways in Canada, Faucitano said, by electrical stunning, or carbon dioxide (C02) stunning. In the case of electrical stunning, a pig has tongs placed on either side of its head, and is shocked, rendering it unconscious, and then is bled immediately. In this case, with head only stunned, the pig is unconscious but still alive until the bleeding stops the pig’s heart. Some slaughterhouses use a third tong on the pigs chest, which causes cardiac arrest and the pig is dead before bleeding.During C02 stunning, a pig is placed in a carousel that gets lowered slowly beneath the ground, with the air quality changing from oxygen to carbon dioxide until the pig is rendered unconscious, and then bled.According to Faucitano, electrical stunning is better from an animal welfare perspective because it is instantaneous, but the electrical charge increases the pig’s blood pressure, which can rupture blood vessels and cause acidification of the meat.C02 stunning is criticized because loss of consciousness is not instantaneous, and the pig is aware it is not breathing air and tends to struggle.Faucitano said other researchers are working on different mixtures of gases that are undetectable to the pig, but will achieve the same effect of C02, only faster to avoid stressing the animal.Patrick Watson MATTHEW MCCULLY Luigi Faucitano, a scientist at the Lennoxville Experimental Farm, studies how pigs go from farm to table. For the record, Faucitano is not a vegetarian.Having spent three years working near the kill floor to gather data, Faucitano couldn’t be blamed for being turned off eating pork, but even after everything he has seen, he has no objections.“There’s no perfect life,” he said, maintaining a positive attitude about the meat industry.“When I talk about it, people are grateful and thankful. They say it’s nice to know someone is thinking of these things.” The goal of Faucitano’s research is to provide scientific evidence to back recommendations to decrease the stress level of pigs on their way to slaughter. He is looking at ramp design and the possibility of hydraulics for loading.Faucitano was one of the first scientists to study pot belly trailers. He got inside and evaluated the air quality, and did research to improve ventilation when the truck is stationary.“Every time you propose an enrichment of environment, there is an added cost for the producers,” Faucitano said, making it hard to convince people to see the bigger picture.Adding straw to the trucks and pens, transporting less pigs per trailer so they have space to sit down, socializing them with humans and taking other steps to keep the pigs happy could add costs, but will be better in the long run, Faucitano said.“I want to give the tools to the industry to limit stress on the animal, and improve meat quality.” INVITATION INFORMATION SESSION ABOUT THE ÎLES-DE-LA-MADELEINE WIND-DIESEL HYBRID PROJECT Cont’d from Page 3 come more from changes in the musician and his music over time than from a change in location.“Each record is a huge change for any artist,” he added.“You can’t change the music without changing yourself.” Though conscious of his band’s growing popularity, Watson noted that the group’s fame has always grown in consistently small increments.“There was never an explosion,” the musician shared, “we just seem to naturally grow little bits at a time.” The artist explained that Love Songs for Robots comes from an idea that has been in the works for some time. The music draws on Watson’s longtime love of science fiction for inspiration, but came about as a result of an interesting creative process.Watson described himself as someone who is always moving from one creative project to the next, but explained that he generally writes songs for six months before anything comes out that is actually worth recording.Though those songs mostly disappear into the creative aether, little moments filter back into his repetoire here and there.“You have to let go,” Watson said, “but you also just have to try things.I wrote a hip hop song, just for fun.Everything brings something to the final work.” Asked how one knows a song is finished when following that kind of model, the musician said that when the song sounds good on a one-mic recording! then the band moves ahead with it.Asked about what’s in the works now that this album has been released, Watson explained that he’s currently in a process of listening to songs that came out while he was working on recording. The artist explained that he cuts himself off from all other music while in the recording phase to help keep himself focused.Tickets for the Patrick Watson performance at the Granada are $46 from the box office (819-565-5656) or $49 if ordered playing games?John Edwards Tonight, Sherbrooke city council is expected to vote on whether to bid for the 2021 Francophonie Games. This is perhaps not surprising, given that the 2013 Canada Summer Games have been widely seen as a successful endeavour. But the success of 2013 does not not mean that we should necessarily jump into a Francophonie adventure, or any other mega-games that comes along. The Francophonie Games, in case you haven’t heard of them, have been around since 1989, set up as the Francophonie’s rough equivalent to the Commonwealth Games. On the grand scale of international events, however, it ranks somewhere between the Youth Olympic Games and the Island Games (yes, both of those exist).Canada has hosted them once before, in Ottawa in 2001, but if you blinked you missed it.The event, as it’s currently set up, consists of competition in anywhere from four to eight sports (in 2013 these were athletics, basketball, boxing, judo, table tennis, soccer, and wrestling) and seven cultural events (song, fairy tale, traditional inspiration dance, painting, poetry, photography, sculpture).Generally, there are two main reasons that cities look to host large games like this one: improving facilities and increasing a city’s profile.Neither of those, however, appear to be the case with the Francophonie Games. On the facility side, it’s unlikely that the Francophonie Games would entail any new buildings, or likely any real improvements. The region undertook major, generally badly-needed, improvements to its sports facilities to host the Canada Games. It seems unlikely, just eight years down the road, that senior governments would loosen up their purse strings to fund improvements to the same facilities, especially for an event that hosts sports that were all likely featured at the Canada Games. The region might have to improve some facilities for the cultural events, however, as I’m not sure what is needed to hold the fairy tale event. In general, it does not appear that a facility legacy is likely. The second reason is to increase a city’s profile. In order for that to work, though, the Games themselves have to have a profile. For the Francophonie Games, that simply is not the case. The Canada Games had wide coverage on TSN and RDS, the country’s leading sports networks. The most recent Francophonie Games had no such coverage from any Canadian channels, with only TV5 providing coverage on these shores. In general, they generate little coverage outside of the host country. As a publicity tool, these games, unfortunately, fall short of the mark.It begs the question of why a city which has been doing the civic equivalent of searching the couch cushions for change in the hopes of finding any savings possible, would embark on a bid that — even if unsuccessful — would cost a significant amount of money.Given the choice between trying to charm Francophonie bigwigs and keeping swimming pools open longer, I know which one I would choose.Even if the financial component is ignored, minimized, or supposedly can be made up with sponsorship (from who?), city council would do well to consider the disruption to the lives of taxpayers that these games would entail. This disruption is a fact that residents of many host, or potential host, cities are just now starting to be aware. The civic grumbling in Toronto about Pan-Am Games traffic, and the open hostility that many Bostonians have shown to their Olympic bid, are signs that cities no longer have a free pass to pursue events willy-nilly without considering the effects on their citizens. Finally, one should look at the reason this bid is even a possibility. It is coming up because Belgium, who was thought to be in the lead to host, has pulled out.Rather than jumping in where Belgians fear to trend, the city should approach this endeavour extremely carefully.- «THEw - RECORD 1195 Galt East, Sherbrooke, Quebec JIG 1Y7 concern with language, although I might easily fall into the same traps as people who are asked to respond in the heat of the moment if I had a microphone stuck in my face. That said, here are some of my favourite howlers. In a football commentary: “He was literally run over by a freight train.” Literally?! “If I’m the Chiefs, I’m looking for the fake.” Interesting insertion of self and weird use of the present tense! “I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.” “That was a great delivery of the basketball.” Why not just “ball”?Don’t we know what sport we are watching?“It’s great to have a player like Jamal.” But he is Jamal! As a football player leapt up to catch the ball: “He left his feet.” Really?“I wouldn’t be bothered if we lost every game, as long as we won the league.” And from baseball coach Yogi Berra: “Baseball is 90 per cent mental -the other half is physical.” “90 per cent of putts that are short don’t go in.” Leaving the world of sport, we find other nuggets: On CBC news: “The meeting wrapped.” I thought that we wrapped parcels.“Go to our website for ‘Breaking headlines as they happen,”’ urges the CBC newsreader (July 5, 2015).“Breaking” news seems to be everywhere. Why not just “latest”?And is news not new anyway? As for “as they happen,” what does that add to the message? If it does add anything, it seems to imply that the headlines themselves are the news! Stories are said to be “trending.” Ugh.“Looking to.” What is wrong with “hoping to” or “wishing to”?Advertised products are “ah new.” No they are not.The latest is what Jeremy Butterfield in the Guardian referred to as the “absurdly gushing and pseudo-empa-thetic” “reaching out.” For example, after writing a vigorous letter of complaint to the CBC, I was thanked for “reaching out”! Finally, my favourite gripe is “Going forward.” “We have a plan going forward.” This is redundant.Does a plan not imply the future? Also, “going forward” suggests that all will be well.Heaven forbid that we might think otherwise in the best of ah possible worlds, but don’t some plans gang aft agley? And what about this nonsense?“We cannot back down, going forward.” Join me, going forward, in either shaking your head, groaning, gnashing your teeth or perhaps simply laughing at these absurdities.Stuart McKelvie Lennoxville The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Monday, July 6, 2015 Page 7 H Q j It was unclear whether they were asking forgiveness for tempting fate by A. ^/©c PREWCTKBIE! 1 SHE COUL&H'T BE /KORE I WRONG-t KK\\ KS OKRING f KNT> KGVENTUROUS KS 8 THEY COiAE !
