Belford is a big fan of P.D.James.The late Phyllis Dorothy, Baroness James of Holland Park, OBE, FRSA, FRS (letters bestowed by the Queen, and others), found fame with New Scotland Yard police commander Adam Dalgliesh, who showed off his sensitive side with poetry.James led a fascinating life, dropping out of school at 16 (her father didn’t believe girls needed education, and wanted her to bring in some money). After fighting in the Second World War, her husband was checked into a psychiatric institution, and James went back to work to feed the kids.James’ first book was 1962’s Cover Her Face, which introduced the copper who would make her writing career. Her final Dalgliesh novel was 2008’s The Private Patient, the 14th in the series (James died two years ago). There were also two Cordelia Gray mysteries along the way, and a handful of standalones, including the 1992 sci-fi inflected The Children Of Men, in which humanity faces extinction because of an infertility crisis.(The 2007 movie, with Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine, is filed in the Lennoxville Library at SF-98.) Belford has not read (nor watched) that one, and is no fan of science fiction in general: “I have enough trouble dealing with reality.” James’ books are filed in the Lennoxville Library in Adult Fiction in English and French, and in Audio ames ‘A classic’ Frnanrint Tinu s The 1 " Private Patient AN ADAM DALGLIESH MYSTERY Recordings. The book Time To Be In Earnest: A Adult Fiction in both English and French, Large Print, and Audio, and there’s a short story filed in Easy Reading; but start with 2005’s Still Life).Belford keeps on reading: “In the past years I have read far more non-fiction than fiction.I am particularly interested in the history of the Edwardian Age up to the end of World War II.Anything by Margaret MacMillan.” That historian and academic has piled up multiple awards with her work.Belford particularly recommends The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914, and the 2002 book Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed The World (filed at 940.3; find more MacMillan at 940.31 and 327.73, and via interlibrary loan).Belford has a bit more time for books now that he’s retired from his long-time gig as co-host of CBC Radio’s Quebec AM.“I believe that books and reading are important, particularly in an age where attention spans are shortening and life is more and more presented in a series of Pharmacy in Lennoxville was looking a little green on Thursday as community members continued an annual tradition of coming together to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day.This year the party, which always benefits a local cause, put its support behind the Lennoxville Youth Cen- tre.“The money will go towards out youth and activity fund,” explained Corrinna Pole, who sits on the board of directors of the LYC.“We are able to offer quality services and provide youth with excellent learning opportunities through our activity programs thanks to financial support such as this.” Pole thanked the pharmacy for being a longstanding supporter of the work done by the centre.LYC animator Brooklyn Roy explained that the Centre uses the fund as a means of developing financial responsibility and budgeting skills in the youth of the community. With a given annual budget, she explained, the youth are left to determine how best to spend funds on activities, projects, and recreation.Thelma Doherty, who coordinates the Saint Patrick’s Day event every year, shared that there has not been a single repeat cause in the last 25 years. The money raised from the community is matched by Jean Coutu, effectively doubling the impact for whichever local cause is benefitting in a given year.Bibeau touches down in Lennoxville By Gordon Lambie After a trip to Washington last week and a stop in to the United Nations in New York on Wednesday, Comp-ton-Stanstead Member of Parliament and Minister of International Development Marie-Claude Bibeau took the time for a whirlwind tour through Lennoxville on Thursday morning. While in town the Minister held a question and answer session with the local chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUWj in the Hall of Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and made a visit to the Grace Village Retirement Community (Formerly Grace Christian Home) in Huntingville to wish Verna Westgate well on the occasion of her 108th birthday.“I like to run,” Bibeau joked, following her introduction by local CFUW President Heather Bowman, then clarifying, “I like to be very busy.” Though Bibeau was invited to speak to the CFUW about the first few months of her mandate, the Minister opted to take a question and answer approach to the event, initially taking just three questions to guide her talk before dissolving into a conversational back and forth with different members of the community. As a result, her presentation had a warm and jovial tone that several audience members said they found refreshing and surprising from a Member Brink- Cond’t from page 1 “That Panda event filled me with enough love for a while,” Brink said, energized by the warm reception.“I miss my girlfriend and family and friends, seeing my dogs and having free time, but hey, it’s for a good cause,” Brink said.“This competition is teaching me patience, discipline and the importance of learning lyrics down pat and how to be flexible and open when exploring new styles,” Brink explained. He went on to say that he has learned that success in the industry depends on his ability to transmit his emotions out into the audience.Brink said the next step in the competition will require voter participation from supporters.During performances for the next two Sundays, a telephone number will be displayed on the screen.Fans of Brink can call the number and cast a vote to keep him in the competition.of Parliament.Questions from the audience ranged from things as simple as how the food was at the White House state dinner she attended, to complex and pointed queries on government corruption and the treatment of women both in Canada and abroad.“My life has really changed a lot,” The MP said, explaining that she now finds herself repeatedly pulled back and forth between Sherbrooke, Ottawa, and other parts of the world, “but I was ready for a new challenge.” Several of the questions asked of Bibeau touched on matters of gender parity, equality and/or equity, including one audience member who wondered whether the Minister faced prejudice or a need to work harder to be heard in Cabinet because of being a woman.“I have never had this feeling, thanks to you who made this fight before me,” the MP said.“We surprise our colleagues sometimes.” Though Bibeau was not able to directly address all of the concerns voiced by members of the audience, she emphasized that she is part of an action-oriented government that wants to hear about the concerns of the population and see those things acted upon quickly and effectively.Asked about the best way to bring matters of public concern to the attention of the government, Bibeau explained that persistence and the A.N.A.F.Unit 318 “The Hut” UPCOMING OPEN DANCES 8 P.M.March 19: The Country \\m incurs April 2 - Nislit once,” Bibeau said.“Sometimes if it’s only a letter and you don’t get a follow-up, ask for a meeting.“ After getting away from the curious crowd at Saint Andrew’s, the MP crossed town to Huntingville to present a letter of recognition to 108 year old Verna Westgate following her recent birthday. The Minister and the resident chatted briefly about Westgate’s life, speaking of her family, her fondness for card games, and the experience of moving from Island Brook to Michigan and back again.“I’m an antique” Westgate joked.During her brief visit to It turned out to be an amazing day despite the mild winter and everyone had a lot of fun.m Geordie Productions: “Sidewalk Chalk” By Meagan and Maranda On February 22, Geordie Production kindly came and presented a play called “Sidewalk Chalk”.The play was about 2 children, Grace and Gary, who had a great imagination. They drew on the sidewalk almost everyday and imagined themselves as the King and Queen of Chalkworld who ruled over their drawings. After an argument between Grace and Gary, they started erasing the wonderful drawings when they were transported into the world they had created.Grace and Gary met Sir Lancelot, Royal Guard of the Bicycle and encountered ¦¦¦ I* - ' ‘ 'T r r* s*-; - .v*: the evil, genius, psychopathic Dr.Claudius.Chalkworld was deteriorating and the children needed to save it.Realizing that they needed the power crystals, which Dr.Claudius had given to the Dread Dragon Bill, Grace and Gary set off for Mount Dread. They managed to get the power crystals from Bill and saw that they were just pieces of colored chalk.Grace and Gary understood that they could rebuild Chalkworld together as friends because of the lessons of friendship that they learned on their adventure. As their friendship song goes, “You’re my best friend, yeah! You’re not the best friend, yeah! But, you’re my best friend YEAH!!” The students loved the play and we hope to experience another Geordie Productions in the future. Why the pie?By Matthew McCully The interesting thing about a tradition is that after enough time has passed, its origin is often forgotten.Throughout this week, the Lennoxville Curling Club has been hosting the 84th annual Men’s Invitational Bonspiel, better known as ‘The Pie’.While curling is the main event, what many of the LCC members and visiting curlers look forward to is the banquet on Saturday, which includes a roast beef meal and, of course, all-you-can-eat pie. This reporter was curious, why the pie?Surprisingly, there was no clear answer.Everyone knew the tournament is called The Pie because of the all-you-can-eat pie that is served at the banquet, but none of the LCC members approached by The Record could explain why at the very beginning it was pie and not cake, or cookies, or squares, or ice cream or any other dessert that became synonymous with the bonspiel. It was suggested that men prefer pie to cake.It was also thought pie was easier to transport and that’s why it became a staple at the banquets. At one point every pie served at the bonspiel banquet was homemade. These days it was pointed out that people either don’t know how, or don’t have the time to bake a pie, so quite a few of the pies, numbering well over 150, are store-bought.There are community members unaffiliated with the LCC that still contribute a pie every year to the banquet. Some of the more exotic favourites that have graced the banquet table have included grasshopper pie, banana cream pie, key lime pie, lemon meringue pie and coconut cream pie. There are also always fruit pies and sugar pies. These days, there are even some pies on the menu to accommodate diabetics. An off-shoot of the pie is a competition among some of the men at the banquet to see who could eat the most pieces of pie.In 2008 The Record reported that one hungry banquet attendee ate 14 pieces of pie after a hill roast beef meal with all the fixings. It was suggested by club members that since then, Specialist of Chrysler and Dodge trucks for over 40 years.Michel Comeau thanks you for the support that you have shown him for the past year at Magog Concept Chrysler.Always a pleasure to serve you ! MAGOGCONCEPT CHRYSLER See you soon ! Jffl/cAe/ 't/wmeaec the record had climbed to 16 pieces. The banquet for the bonspiel will take place this Saturday in Gertrude Scott Hall below the Lennoxville United Church.Hopefully by then the LCC and other community members familiar with the history of the area can put their heads together and come up with a solid answer to the question, why the pie?John Luce Memorial Dart and Pool Tournaments U1 K1 Lt children and in-laws in their new homes across the continent.March is Maple Month Liquid Gold and a Sticky Story We moved into our house 30 years ago and inherited 20 maple trees and a fire-pit on which we were told that the previous owners had boiled down the sap each year to make syrup. It became our own rite of spring to light the fire, fill the neighbourhood with smoke and make dark and smolcey maple syrup one batch at a time in a big old galvanized laundry tub. However, in order to escape the bonfire and smoke police we had to replace the fire with a propane burner, but we still use the big tub batch method to make a few litres of syrup each year, the flavour and colour vary from season to season.Ajar of our unique product of liquid gold is the perfect gift each time we visit our children and in-laws in their new homes across the continent.Of course it is now illegal to carry mason jars full of dangerously sweet syrup in our carry-on bag so they have to go in the checked luggage. Our first naive attempt was to wrap the jars in plastic bags and socks and then bury them in the middle of the suitcase. It turns out that this was not a great idea, one jar broke and the glass cut the plastic bag so we ended up with sweet socks and sticky luggage.More recently in order to escape the attentions of the "baggage hammers" we now use multiple small plastic bottles in double bags.So far these measures have kept the syrup safe, but if you are flying at the same time as us maybe you should take advantage of the plastic wrap service at the airport, you never know, your bag could be underneath ours.Stickily yours, Brian Talbot & Sheila MacLean r PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHEILA MACLEAN : W Good Reads Cont’d from page 2 He’s still busy, however, including The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, March 18, 2016 Page 7 One column, four voices Opening to the Spirit Today’s Word: Prophecy By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco IjMarch Madness is upon us.For basketball nuts like me this is the biggest weekend of the year.64 basketball teams are entered in the NCAA tournament that begins tonight. My brother, two of my nieces, and a good friend have all sent in our predictions about which teams will make it to the Sweet sixteen and ultimately the Final four. All my prophetic powers are needed to pick winners.A few years ago one of the sports networks used an actual monkey to make picks, just for a lark.Sadly, the monkey beat many of the prognosticators. Our world is full of prophets, proud pundits who make bold predictions each January, or before every election.People want to know the future, and some even make important life choices based on these guesses. The stock market will rise. The stock market will fall.Gas prices will go up.The price of gold will decrease.Even orange juice prices are prophesied about. As you can perhaps guess, these sort of prophets do not carry much weight with me.In fact, a biblical prophet was not a fortuneteller, but a person who spoke the truth, even when it was difficult to hear.People like Jeremiah, Deborah, or Isaiah preached against injustice, ranted about abuse of power and stood up to tyrants.Their prophecies were not a road map of the future, but rather a prescription for better living. One of my favourite prophets put it this way, “What does God require of you, but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah) I guess I might make a prediction after all.Follow that advice and you will enjoy a more meaningful life.)When I was about ten years old I received a small black ball with an 8 on the front.Behind the eight, on the other side of the ball, was a little window. When you shook it a prophecy appeared in the window.“I would become wealthy.” I would meet the man of my dreams in a foreign land.” “I would travel for my next vacation.” Mostly I would keep shaking it until I came up with the one about the man of my dreams. That’s the thing about prophecies. They always seem a little suspect but we tend to put credence in the ones we like - a bit like reading our horoscope.I remember being quite shocked to discover that some of the prophecies in the bible were written after the events forecast, or so certain scholars tell us.Still there are documented cases in modern times where prophecies of future events have been accurate in uncanny ways.It always makes me realize that there is much to life that is mystery.Perhaps prophecies could be considered windows into possible futures, or as warnings meant to spur us on to take corrective action. However, prophecy used as an absolute prediction for future events can become self-fulfilling.Herein lies the danger. When we decide there is no point in becoming more responsible for the waste we create, the plastic we throw in the dump or the economic model that leaves vast numbers in abject poverty, all because the world is about to end, we are misusing prophecy. When we believe God will come at some future day of reckoning but do nothing to alleviate injustice here and now, we are misusing prophecy.Prophecy can help us project into the future but prophecy can never determine with certainty what tomorrow will bring. We each have the power to change the course of history.Let us stop shrugging off the responsibility for doing so by relying on prophecies of doom tomorrow.Instead let us use our precious human lives to bring about a better world today.3) A favourite wisdom fable tells of a fortuneteller who always bases his predictions on the obvious."Will I be famous?" one asks."Oh yes, as soon as you become well known and acclaimed by many far and wide." "Will I be rich?" asks another."You will be wealthy as soon as you acquire lots of money and manage to keep it." "As for me," asked a third."Will I find my one true love and live happily ever after?" "No doubt," he affirms, "as soon as you find a worthy partner who accepts your proposal and the two of you make a good life together." All predicated on what we must do to make our dreams come true.Similarly, prophecy as a way of shaping justice requires no abracadabra, crystal ball or magic. It proceeds from taking the longer view, observing patterns and trends, reading the Zeitgeist of the times, imagining tomorrow's outcomes to actions of today. We are now living in prophetic times. So much is at stake in determining the success or survival of our fledging human enterprise. In the 4 1/2 billion years of Earth's history, our fairly recent upstart species has managed to compromise the health and future well-being of the entire Earth community.Prophets we have among us, aided by the same science that has brought us the technological conveniences of everyday living. But many pick and choose, and do not heed their warnings.Today's prophets are still scorned and discounted, run out of town like those biblical figures of old.Our future looks a lot like the past. Will we humans survive? That wise fortuneteller would probably answer: Only if we learn to stop killing each other and stop laying waste to the very resources upon which our lives depend.4) The ancient prophets were not fortunetellers, soothsayers or predictors of the future. They were men and women who spoke to the people about God.Usually, they spoke warnings about living better lives, being more generous to the poor, and the need to put God at the center of our lives.Usually, they were highly unpopular.Often, they were killed.John the Baptist was a wild man and a powerful preacher who called everyone to repentance.Jonah was called to prophesy to the people of Nineveh with the same message.Repentance is something still badly needed today, and I wonder where our prophets are.Anyone who speaks out against greed or injustice, calling us to greater compassion, carries God’s message. The prophet Micah shared this simple message: What does the Lord require of us?To seek justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God.There has always been a tension between the prophets and the priests.By our nature and by our job descriptions, priests are called to support the structures and institutions of the church. We need prophets to challenge us and to remind us of what is most important. We need to repent of our own sins.We need to seek justice, and to love God and others with humility.Prophets often come in forms we least expect.Maybe they are dirty and wild, like John.Maybe they are women, like Deborah.Maybe they are that person in your life that you wish you could be without. If they make you uncom- fortable and part of you wants to kill them, they may just be the prophet you need to listen to.One word, four voices - newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, March 18, 2016 Page 19 Even in the midst of a kidney infection, he still wanted me to mess around medical or family emergencies.Business investments and repaying credit card debt do not qualify.Your children count on your guilt to keep the cash flowing.Straighten your backbone and keep in mind the long-term picture.Your daughter can find free help through Debtors Anonymous (debtor-sanonymous.org).Dear Annie: You were spot on telling “Grossed Out” to call the humane society, because his wife accumulates animals whenever she gets upset. However, you missed an important point. This lady’s behavior is called hoarding.Hoarding, whether it be of stuffed or live animals, is a mental illness. He should get his wife the appropriate help, because simply getting rid of the animals will not fix the problem.— Seen This Before Dear Seen This: Several readers pointed out that the woman has a mental health problem and needs help.We completely agree and should have mentioned it.While the humane society deals with animal hoarding, they are primarily interested in the well-being of the animals. Here are some resources for the humans: The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (adaa.org) and the International OCD Foundation (iocdf.org).The National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org) offers information and support for those with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive issues, including hoarding.Dear Annie: Many years ago, I was separated from my husband for several years. At the tail end of our separation, I discovered he had been cheating on me.About a week after I learned this, I was approached by the husband of a woman I knew who was quite ill.He said she had given permission for the two of us to sleep together.Because my husband’s affair was fresh in my mind, I agreed to this, although now I can see it was misguided.I assumed my husband and I would be getting a divorce, and I was hoping this new relationship would lead somewhere. After a while, I realized I was being used and ended it.My husband found out and he forgave me.In fact, we reconciled and are still together. Here’s the problem: Although my daughters have forgiven me, my son continues to make disrespectful remarks about me on social media.I have tried talking to him about it.To my face, he acts as though everything is fine, but his online comments can be seen by all our family and friends.Obviously, he has never gotten over my affair, but he lives across the country, so it’s not as though we can go to counseling together.I’m not sure how to handle this and I’ve had enough. My heart is hardening toward him.— Hurt Mom Dear Mom: Apparently, your son holds you to a higher standard than he does his father. His nasty comments on social media are childish. He is trying to punish you.If you have not yet sincerely apologized to your son for causing him pain, please do so.It costs you nothing and it might be what he needs to settle down. You also can ask his father or sisters to intercede and make him see that this is counterproductive and could damage the relationship permanently.Otherwise, we strongly urge you to stop reading his posts.Such vitriol only hurts you repeatedly.Ignore what you can, and get counseling for yourself if you need help letting go.Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Please email your questions to anniesmail-box@creators.com, or write to: Annie’s have been married for 18 years and we have four children.Lately, I feel like a piece of meat.Derek wants sex every day and grabs my breasts constantly. If I refuse, he pouts.Derek recently lost his job and we were evicted, so we moved in with my mom.The longest Derek has ever held a job is four years. He looks for work, but then sits and plays games on the computer while my mom and I do chores and help the kids with their homework.I was raised with a strong work ethic, and have been the primary breadwinner for most of our marriage.I resent Derek for not respecting me when I say no to his constant demands for sex.Even in the midst of a kidney infection, he still wanted me to mess around.I am ready to leave him over these issues. Please help.— Indiana Sex Object Dear Indiana: We think Derek feels inadequate as a provider, and instead of fixing that, he uses sex as a way to control the relationship and keep you in what he sees as a subservient position. But lest we be accused of practicing psychiatry without a license, we strongly urge you to get into counseling and figure this out.Derek may have adult ADD or some other problem that interferes with his ability to hold onto a job.Obviously, it would be best if Derek would go with you for counseling, but if not, go on your own.Check to see if your workplace has an employee assistance program that can help. There also are low-cost counseling options available through your cler-gyperson, United Way, Catholic Charities and the Department of Children and Family Services.Dear Annie: Wow, I was so surprised by your comment to “Outraged in Pennsylvania,” that her husband’s girlie calendar was none of her business. Most women I know would be upset if their husband willingly encouraged the exploitation of women by allowing this calendar to hang for all the other boys to ogle in the bathroom. This is sleazy. If a woman has any class or values, this would bother her, as it goes against everything women have been fighting for — not to be looked at as sexual objects and to be taken seriously. It’s offensive at any Annie’s Mailbox workplace, whether women are present or not.If it were my husband, this would be a huge character issue. For women like you to say this is OK is shocking! — K.Dear IC: Please read more carefully. We did not say this was OK.In fact, we agree with everything you say about it being sleazy and exploitative. Here is where we differ: She should not be telling her husband how to run his office. We would say the same if her husband objected to something at his wife’s office — it’s none of his business. She has registered her complaint with him, but how he deals with it is entirely his decision, not hers.If she finds his response to be inadequate or offensive, and it changes how she feels about him, that is a different matter and should be taken up with the nearest marriage counselor.Dear Annie: I am a divorced mother of two married children.I am now retired, but in the past, I have helped both my children with financial problems. The kids and their spouses make more money than I do.My son always yammers on about some get-rich-quick scheme and recently borrowed money from me to invest in his own business. He has promised to pay me back, but as always, when the time comes, he invariably has some excuse as to why it’s inconvenient to do so.Over the years, I have co-signed vehicles for him that I end up paying for, and he has never totally repaid any loan.My daughter’s problem is credit cards. No matter how many times I have helped her out, she keeps going into debt. She calls me and cries and tells me her husband will divorce her if he finds out how much she owes. She has medical problems and I feel guilty not helping her.But I’m getting so tired of my kids borrowing from me that it’s awkward being around them.I am fortunate that I am comfortable financially, but I worked hard and planned for my future.I have never charged a dime that I could not pay.I recently inherited a small amount of money from a brother, and I’d like to share it with my other siblings.I have given my children a little of this money, but I don’t think it’s right to give them more._____ I told my daughter that she needs to discuss her debt problem with her husband, and she won’t.She says she can’t afford counseling.I feel guilty that I can’t keep helping her, but I know it is just prolonging the problem. What can I do?— Morose Mom Dear Mom: You already know that the best way to help your children is to insist they stand on their own two feet.Tell both of them that any future “loans” will be strictly for * Happy 50th to the the "Niftieth" Gina He had been badly wounded and was recuperating in a hospital in Europe for a long time and never made it back to Sherbrooke until after Emilie had married and moved to Ottawa. He had never married. After forty years of separation, Henri and Emilie finally got married and lived out their lives on Henri’s farm. What a lovely story! And so close to home! We sang Joyful, Joyful We Adore You VU 232.Euripides said: Love is all we have, and the only way we can help each other. We closed the meeting with the Mis-pah Benediction: May the Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent, one from the other.Amen.More members equals more food and we certainly had a plentiful supply.Every dish was as tasty as the last.Speaking for myself (and hopefully everyone else) each bite was greatly enjoyed and appreciated.Until next time.Submitted by Marlene Lowry Email: classad@sherbrookerecord.com 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.(819) 569-9525 RECORD Classifieds www.sherbrookerecord.com The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, March 18, 2016 Page 23 Your Birthday SUNDAY, MARCH 20,2016 Pay attention to the important things in your life.Nurture relationships with the people closest to you.Offer positive direction and make a point to pursue goals that will help you expand your interests and enhance crucial partnerships.Live, love and laugh.PISCES (Feb.20-March 20) — You’ll be tempted by people who have bad habits.Refuse to let anyone pressure you into something that may cause you to feel uncertain or confused.ARIES (March 21-April 19) — Fight back if you feel you are in the right.Your strength, courage and ability to express your thoughts succinctly will lead to success.Do what’s in your best interest.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -
