Filed in Adult Fiction, and via interlibrary loans.Author Daniel Silva’s hero is an Israeli spy, Gabriel Allon, who moonlights as an art restorer for the Vatican.Silva’s one-two punch Moscow Rules (2008) and its sequel, The Defector (2009, both filed in Adult Fiction; there’s an abridged version in Audio), both feature the murderous Russkie arms dealer Ivan Kharkov. In The Defector, the man who saved Allon’s life just months before (as described in Moscow Rules, titled for a supposedly real, unwritten collection of “rules” in the spy biz) goes missing.Further, Allon knows he’s also been marked for death by Kharkov, a man who can never forgive.Real Soviet history inspires this thriller: As author Silva notes in his afterword, Joseph Stalin murdered Cont’d on page 6 Ben by Daniel Shelton Y NOTICE A f ANYTHIN© ] yplFF£REI\\flYy ^ ~Zoc^ I'M WEARINGSHOFTS FOR THE FIRST TIME .v THIS YFAR! The Hill for supply management By Matthew McCully Close to three thousand protesters from across the country converged on Parliament Hill in Ottawa yesterday in defence of Canada’s supply management system; among the crowd were three bus loads of townships farmers and agricultural industry supporters, as well as a convoy of tractors that had made the journey, some travelling for days on back roads at an average of 40 km per hour, to gain visibility and demonstrate their resolve.Dairy producer Peter MacKinnon from the Coaticook area was on one of the three busses that arrived from the Townships, and spoke to The Record via cell phone as the protesters gathered at Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau, preparing to march to Parliament Hill.“It’s very energetic,” MacKinnon said, referring to the crowd of protesters. He counted 14 busses and a convoy of tractors in his immediate surroundings. He sent a number of pictures to The Record throughout the event.MacKinnon added that the protesters were in the process of learning songs, composed specifically for the occasion to the tune of Frère Jacques. The purpose of the demonstration was a show of support for Canada’s supply management system.Concessions made in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) for more dairy imports into Canada, combined with diafiltered milk and other creatively labeled dairy products coming across the border from the United States through legal loopholes puts the system in jeopardy, according to critics.Just as farmers in Quebec and Ontario were revving their tractor engines on Tuesday and hitting the road for Ottawa, Conservative leadership candidate Maxime Bernier was making clear his desire to abolish the supply management system, referring to it as a government cartel.“It’s the opposite of a free market,” Bernier said, during Tuesday’s press conference.“Supply management is a system Massey-Vanier Cont’d from page 1 background on the award being presented or simple introductions about the students being honoured, while others took the audience into in-depth explorations of students’ lives. Before the ceremony finished, the graduating class had been called everything from the builders of the future to a bunch of “young punks and punkettes,” received a ukulele serenade from music teacher William Jarand, and been treated to a speech of intentionally generic platitudes by Science and Ethics teacher Adam Alter. At the same time, individuals were praised for plans to work on technology that will help the blind to see, and for perusing futures in the world of criminology and elementary education.Particularly poignant in the context of a ceremony that opened with awards in memory of former students and graduates who died young was the message of Michael Drolet. In presenting the Class of 1983 reunion memorial fund bursary Drolet noted that 14 of his former classmates are no longer alive and implored the members of the class of 2016 to avoid dangerous decisions as they head off to the graduation and prom. The Record’s Charles Bury Bursary was presented this year to Nicholas Parrott of Bedford.Parrott is heading to Dawson College to study Cinema-Communications, after which he plans to enroll in the Journalism program at Carleton University in the hopes of one day becoming a sports journalist. He told The Record that he has loved sports all his life and hopes to do an internship with TSN in Montreal over the course of his studies. The award winner said that he is already working on building his exposure, posting hockey commentaries on the fan site nextgensports.ca.The Record congratulates all award recipients and wishes them well in their future projects.GORDON LAMBIE Nicholas Parrott, the recipient of this year's Charles Bury Bursary based on keeping the prices of dairy, poultry and eggs artificially high through the control of production, the banning of imports and price fixing by bureaucrats,” Bernier said. While Bernier’s comments were likely a topic of discussion during yesterday’s demonstration, MacKinnon said the protest had been in the works for months.“This has been brewing for much longer,” he explained. The big issue at the moment, according to Mackinnon, is the losses local farmers are facing because of diafiltered milk.“We want Ottawa to apply the rules as they should be,” he said, explaining that the product is not considered a milk ingredient at the border, but is being used by Canadian companies to produce cheese.“It was created for the sole purpose of getting across the border,” MacKinnon said.MacKinnon pointed out that it was not just dairy farmers at the protest. On the bus he was on, MacKinnon said there were feed mill representatives, veterinarians, machinery dealers, and other people reliant on the industry.“As the health of the agricultural industry fluctuates, so will their livelihood as well,” MacKinnon said.Marcel Blais, vice-president of the Townships Dairy Producers Association, was one of the many farmers who arrived in Ottawa yesterday on a tractor. He was part of a 16-tractor convoy that left from Longueil, and travelled for two days.“We wanted to be seen by the population,” Blais said, explaining the reason for the long slow journey.“We’re not asking for money; we want the norms and regulations to be respected,” Blais said, explaining that cheese standards were clearly established in 2008, but are not being enforced.According to Blais, two of the three thousand protesters on Parliament Hill yesterday were from Quebec, but there was representation from all the provinces in Canada, he added.t h‘ v ' Record resident receives esteemed award Hatley By Rachel Newcombe Special to The Record It is a whirlwind week for Hatley resident and MacDonald College student Shelby Drew. This past Saturday, she received the Lieutenant Governor bronze award, and will be graduating on Friday.Drew, a former Alexander Galt Regional High School student, will be graduating from the three year Farm Management and Technology program at MacDonald College. The Lieutenant Governor award came at the culmination of a busy and productive three years. She said she was surprised to find out that she and a fellow classmate had received such a prestigious award.“I had no idea until I got the letter in the mail,” she said. This is not the first award Drew has been nominated for.In April she won the Spirit of Agriculture award from Farm Credit Canada for a project she completed. She will be presenting this project later in June in Quebec City.Being awarded the Lieutenant Governor award was what Drew described as, “the experience of a lifetime.” “There aren’t many times when you’re around such a diverse group,” she added about the over 70 people that were presented with awards at the ceremony. This was all before she actually went up on stage and received the award from Lieutenant Governor J.Michel Doyon.“It was exhilarating and stressful,” she laughed, adding that there were a lot of things she had to remember about how to walk on the stage, and how to interact with someone of such a high stature.Drew accomplished many things that helped get her to that moment.“I’ve been an active member of the Hatley 4H for 13 years,” she said, outlining her years there, most recently as vice-president.She has also been a part of 4H on the provincial level.Once Drew made the move to MacDonald College, she immediately became heavily involved in the mass judging livestock club. This lead to her involvement in shows and events, like the Mac Royale.“We were kind of drafted,” Drew remarked about joining the club. She explained that upper year students often recruited first year students with strong skills, and, “who could be bossy.” When asked why she chose this particular area of study, Drew had a simple answer.“My passion for agriculture, and my grandfather,” she said.Drew’s grandfather still operates a farm in Waterville, and she commented that through the ups and downs of his life, he still got up every day and farmed. She explained that his passion was a big inspiration to her. With her degree winding to a close, Drew reflected on the past three years she spent at MacDonald College.“It was the most amazing experience of my life,” she said, her voice filled with passion.Originally petrified to go, she explained that she had found an extended family in her classmates.“Our class was just so connected. They made my three years so awesome.” After graduation, Drew plans to move back home to Hatley.“I’m hoping to eventually start my own ranch,” she said. Her goal is to one day be able to establish beef sales in a direct-to-consumer business model.Happy to be graduating, Drew is eager to get home and get started on the next step.COURTESY Shelby Drew receiving her award from Lieutenant Governor J.Michel Doyon ‘Breaking solution to get out of a difficult financial situation. It didn't end up as well as they might have hoped.Tommy Bureau and Nadia Lafrenière pleaded guilty Wednesday in Sherbrooke to the charges of possession of cocaine for the purposes of trafficking before Quebec Court Judge Claire Desgens. Both individuals admitted their involvement in the scheme between October 2014 and January 2015.Bureau also entered a guilty plea to a charge of breach of conditions for not respecting his curfew in December of last year. The couple fell victim to an anonymous tip that put police on the trail of the couple, neither of whom had a previous criminal record.Using the couple’s cell phone number, police were able to trace them down and make an arrest.Sherbrooke Police investigators were able to witness exchanges with customers made from their vehicle. These transactions lasted about thirty seconds.During a search of their home, investigators SPS found 20 grams of cocaine divided into bags as well as $ 1,229 in cash in a safe.Statements made by the accused to police officers revealed that the couple moved 70 units of cocaine a week for a profit of about $10 per unit.Defence attorneys for the couple have asked for a pre-sentence report to assist the court in deciding the couple’s fate. The couple apparently dove into the business because of financial difficulties and not because of a drug problem.Arguments on sentencing are scheduled to be heard on September 19.Follow The Sherbrooke Record on Facebook and Twitter! clean up the Wabigoon River.Grassy Narrows' fight for clean water is a struggle for environmental justice By David Suzuki Biologist Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was published in 1962.The book — about widespread agricultural pesticide use and how toxic chemicals like DDT were threatening insects, birds and other wildlife — garnered widespread acclaim and is heralded as a catalyst for the modern environmental movement. That same year, a pulp and paper mill in Dryden, Ontario, began dumping untreated mercury waste into the Wabi-goon River — more than 9,000 kilograms up to 1970.The mill was upstream from several First Nations communities, including Grassy Narrows, home to the Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishin-abek people.Mercury contamination has triggered an ecological crisis that has devastated the local environment and community members’ health to this day.The Wabigoon River has been sacred to the people of Grassy Narrows for generations.Along with the chain of lakes through which it runs, the river provided fish, drinking water and nearly full employment in guiding and commercial fishing. But shortly after the mill started dumping, mercury began appearing at alarming concentrations far downstream and throughout the entire food chain — in the sediment and surface water of lakes and rivers, where bacteria converted it to toxic methylmer-cury, which accumulated in the tissues of fish, aquatic invertebrates and people.Silent Spring introduced the concept of bioaccumulation, the increasing concentration of toxic material from one link in a food chain to the next.Scientists who have monitored mercury in Grassy Narrows found the higher up an organism is on the food chain, the more mercury it contains.Top predatory fish, such as northern pike, have more mercury than fish that eat insects, such as whitefish.Grassy Narrows’ residents have elevated levels of mercury in their blood, hair and other tissues from eating fish and other aquatic foods as part of their traditional diet.Mercury is a potent neurotoxin.Because of chronic mercury exposure, people have suffered from numbness in fingertips and lips, loss of co-ordination, trembling and other neuromuscular problems.Mercury poisoning has also been linked to developmental problems in children, which persist into adulthood.Japanese researchers, who have monitored the health of Grassy Narrows’ residents since the early 1970s, concluded that many suffer from Minamata disease, named after the Japanese city of Minamata, which was poisoned with mercury when a chemical company dumped tainted wastewater into Minamata Bay in the 1950s and ’60s.Grassy Narrows is at the centre of one of the worst toxic sites in Canada.Scientists have found dangerously high concentrations of mercury in area lakes more than 50 years after initial contamination. One meal of walleye from nearby Clay Lake, a traditional fishing area, contains up to 150 times the amount of mercury deemed safe by the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency.Because of mercury contamination, the Ontario government closed Grassy Narrows’ commercial fishery in 1970 and told people, particularly children and women of child-bearing age, to avoid eating fish.Though well-intentioned, this policy worsened residents’ health by encouraging them to replace a staple wild protein source with store-bought food, which is inferior in quality and nutritional value.Fish are a traditional food of Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario, and their harvest and consumption are important for culture and health.Fishing is also a protected treaty right.Years of case law, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada’s 2014 Tsilhqot’in decision, have drawn attention to the fact that treaty and Aboriginal rights enshrined in Section 35 of the Canadian Constitu- tion are meaningless if Indigenous peoples can’t continue to live off healthy populations of wild game, fish and plants.A recent scientific report found that Grassy Narrows’ Wabigoon River can be cleaned up, and the fish can become safe to eat again — but only with political will. The underlying message of Silent Spring, that everything is connected, is tragically playing out in Grassy Narrows. The people there have resisted degradation of their lands and waters and are leaders in the environmental justice movement. It’s time for the provincial and federal governments to join with Grassy Narrows to clean up the Wabigoon River. No single act would go further to illustrate that a new era has dawned in our relationship with Indigenous peoples and our shared environment. You can help by signing the David Suzuki Foundation’s letter to the Ontario and federal shot in the back of the head and buried in long mass graves.I visited the recently opened memorial at Butovo with my family in the summer of 2007 whole researching Moscow Rules, and in large measure it inspired The Defector.“One question haunted me as I walked slowly past the burial trenches, accompanied by weeping Russian citizens. Why are there not more places like this?Places where ordinary Russians can see evidence of Stalin’s unimaginable crimes with their own eyes. The answer, of course, is that the rulers of New Rus- sia are not terribly interested in exposing the sins of the Soviet past.On the contrary, they are engaged in a carefully orchestrated endeavour to airbrush away its most repulsive aspects while celebrating its achievements.” Silva partly bases his argument on the fact that Vladimir Putin is a former KGB officer, and the KGB played an essential role in Stalin’s rule. The books are numbers 8 and 9 in the Allon series.Want more Allon in your As Jewish theologian Martin Buber wrote, "All life is meeting." Most days are filled with them! Scheduled or spontaneous, in person, by phone, email or Zoom. The calendar tells us who, what and where - with maybe an agenda sent ahead to help focus and save time.At best, meetings energize me with a lively exchange of ideas and diverse personalities, the commitment to something beyond self I cannot, would not accomplish alone.Other meetings are less formal -countless daily encounters we have with family in passing each other or negotiating the simple details of shared a household, friends and neighbours greeting each other coming and going about our lives.Even at a distance we can now meet, "touch base" and "keep in touch" via Facetime or Skype.Meetings remind us our lives are continually interconnected and interdependent.Yet how often in our daily encounters do we even scratch the surface much less plumb the depths of who we truly are in all our richness? When that happens, it can almost magical -memorable, profound, even life-changing.For Buber, meeting is the opportunity to experience a sacred I/THOU relationship, a mutual recognition of shared humanity between unique beings of infinite worth. How many of our meetings, even in the context of church, provide such spiritual connection, moving us beyond the circumstances of our meeting? One of my goals lately is to be more mindful whenever we gather, that who we are is as important as what we do together. The sacred dimension exists as a hidden potential in any encounter.Awareness of this can transform meeting into everyday spiritual practice.4) In order to really meet anyone, both people need to show up.Granted, many meetings are super- ficial.Picture yourself at a party, with someone asking you “Have you met so and so?” These meetings may be brief and unrevealing. Now, picture yourself in the memory of meeting someone and really meeting.Sometimes these encounters are brief, too but an important exchange really happens.Meetings in which we encounter new people and new ideas are full of potential. You would not be who or where you are but for these meetings.Couples love to tell the stories about how they met, and most inspirational ideas and movements began with a meeting of two or three people with like minds.Think about the people you have met - I mean really met, with a sharing of yourselves with each other - and think about the good that has come from this.Sadly, sometimes people are afraid to put themselves out there.Through holding back they can prevent these deeper meetings from happening.Probably, they showed up and were hurt.Probably, they think they will be rejected if people saw “who they really are”, believing this is somehow worse than everyone else. Please be patient with these people. We are changed by every encounter. Please meet the people around you with patience and with kindness. You may be very pleasantly surprised by who shows up.One word, four voices - now add your own: What significance do meetings have in your life?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Hatley, Waterville & North Hatley United Churches; Rev.Canon W.Lynn Dillabough co-ordinates the Anglican Deanery of Saint Francis; Rev Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev Carole Martignacco pastors UUEstrie - the Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley.Need an American address for your next online purchase? With prices starting at $5 per package, you can use ours!
