Ross Murray Thank you, everyone, thank you.Thank you for that kind ovation, not to mention the spontaneous singing of the national anthem. That it was the national anthem of Uruguay was a bit of a surprise, but stirring nonetheless. This evening, I stand before you deeply proud and humbled - prumbled, as it were. After four days of speeches, policy-making, daiquiris and the occasional threat of physical harm, you have strongly and in some cases unwittingly thrown your support behind me to serve as your designated Ross for the next four years. When I began this journey, as I tied my metaphorical running shoes of ambition and donned my T-shirt of possibility and pulled on my Spandex of success - only to realize I had to take off my running shoes of ambition first, then put on my Spandex of success and then my running shoes of ambition - I understood that there was a risk that I would fall short of my destination. That perhaps I no longer had the stamina to complete the journey. That people would laugh at my legs of whiteness. And indeed it has not been an easy journey. There have been those who have said I no longer have what it takes. That I’m no longer relevant. That I have several overdue library books.Yes, I have had my critics. But my critics have also had me.What does that mean exactly? And is it important? It might be.Do I deny it?Wouldn’t you not also not deny it?That’s the question I put to you. That and does anyone know where to get a good dhal soup around here? But if these last four days have taught me anything, it’s to always have breath mints. They have also taught me that dreams are like a grocery cart: just because it has one wobbly wheel doesn’t mean you can’t sneak it out of the store and use it as a decorative plant holder.Today, tonight, maybe Tuesday, you and I and the people and even some notaries and pharmacists, all of us are one step closer to achieving that dream. For it is a dream that reminds us that greatness is in our grasp and that no one should have to pay that much for ordinary cheddar. As your designated Ross, I promise that I will fulfill my promise to be promising. At least that’s the premise.I will do so with words and with decisions that will be both spoken and made, with results that will have ramifications, both long-ranging and short-term, in due haste, forthwith and so on.There will be some difficult times ahead. We have already seen here on the convention floor the acrimony that has infiltrated our ranks. On Day 2, we weathered a barrage of protests from those demanding a significant reduc- tion in the use of the letter Y.But did we shut them out? No.We listened to them.We heard what the had to sa.On Day 3, violence erupted on the floor between two chimpanzees wearing cowboy outfits. We still don’t know how that happened. How on earth did those monkeys find cowboy outfits that fit? But, boy, that was funny to watch wasn’t it?Chimps.Aren’t these daiquiris delicious? No, it has not always been smooth sailing. There have even been times when we have asked ourselves, “Do we really need a Ross at all?Surely, we could make due with a non-Ross or a half-Ross, a knock-off Ross, a Steve.” But then I ask you: who would make the garlic chilli oil?As we wind down these final minutes of our convention, and before they sweep up the confetti and glitter and stolen hotel bath towels, let me leave you with these parting words: From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and that you never put electric eels in your pocket. They showed me values and morals in their daily life and inappropriate burlesque comic books in their nightly life.We need to pass those lessons on to future generations, because we want our children to know that the only limit to their achievements is the strength of their dreams, their willingness to work for them and a stringent control of body odour.Thank you, good night, and remember: you go Uruguay and I’ll go mine.Police not ignoring pot use at Fête du Lac Record $taff Sherbrooke Tlhree men aged between 16 and 31 were arrested by the Sherbrooke Police Tuesday at the Fête du Lac des Nations for the soon-to-be legal possession of marijuana.Despite the promise by the Trudeau government to legalize the weed, the Criminal Code remains unchanged and pot possession remains illegal, police say, pointing out that the music and fireworks festival is a family event in a public place and police intend to enforce the law as it is.The SPS also points out that consumers tempted to smoke pot in a public place like Jacques-Cartier Park should consider the risk a criminal record and prohibition from entering the United States. It can also have repercussions with regard to looking for a job.In April, the Trudeau government announced it will table a bill to legalize marijuana in the spring of next year.Ben by Daniel Shelton L|\\4 1 APPRECIATE THAT YOU WANTMETO PB/ElOP HEALTHIER EATING NA&IT5.BUTINAWORU?FILLER WITH UNCERTAINTY, I LIKE SOMETHING'S TO BE Staff Sherbrooke The Saint-Élie GeoRally, a new activity inspired by the geocaching concept, has had great success in Saint-Élie since its launch on June 18.Born of collaboration between the Centre communautaire Richard-Gingras, the Borough of Rock Forest-Saint-Élie-Deauville, and the Ch.Saint-Élie development project, the activity has exceeded its original objectives of the organizers of 150 families participating for the summer. In fact, just halfway through the summer, there are over 200 families who have already completed one or other of the three GeoRally circuits The St.Elias GeoRally is a unique and free event that offers participants the opportunity to rediscover the sector as they search for items hidden in Saint-Élie public space.Armed with a Smartphone and some clues, participants engage in a treasure hunt in order to complete the circuit and unlock the mystery word allowing them to win multiple participation awards. The activity was designed to meet a demand from citizens of the Saint-Élie sector who wanted a free activity that promotes exercise and can be done without time constraints. It is interesting to note that a new Smartphone web application was specially developed for the activity. This simple and easily adaptable application has also been noticed by other organizations in Quebec who want to learn from the tool to develop a similar activity. Those wishing to participate need only go to www.georallyesaintelie.com with their Smartphone and bring good walking shoes. The event ends on August 15, 2016.(COURTESY) St.Élie residents are project is not to create tourist towns, but to reveal the innate personalities of these villages,” said Alain Larouche, Executive Director of Tourism Eastern Townships, explaining that the announcement was held in Danville because it is a community that has been working for some time to cultivate its personality and restore the heart of its village.“We want the visits between tourists and locals to be more human and more alive.” While holding up communities like North Hatley and Knowlton as local tourism success stories, Larouche explained that the whole idea behind the program is to have people take their time to get to know a community and form a true bond, rather than flit in to look at the attractions and then leave.Rural tourism today, he said, needs to be a more complete and sustainable experience; rather than draw tourists into the community to the detriment of the locals, the project is meant to encourage active and positive interaction between the people visiting the village and those who live there.“If the community does not engage with the process, then this will not work,” the director said.“It will have no roots, and a plant without roots cannot grow.” Through the Coeurs Villageois process, communities were tasked not with developing new program- ming as much as taking stock of what already exists in each community that makes it special.“We all have a little something that makes us distinct,” said Marie-Lou Laramée, tourism coordinator for Eastman.“We need to take advantage ot that.” In looking at what the community has to offer, the participating villages come up with a “personality” that binds different aspects of their village together. In this way Coaticook becomes “the bridge between town and country” and Cookshire-Eaton can market itself as “the village of the four bells,” granting onlookers a peek into community life and an invitation to come get to know the area better. In time, Larouche said, the hope is to help stimulate local communities and further build on these public personas to help highlight the treasures of the Townships.Larouche said that he expects the Coeur Villageois projects currently underway in Ayer's Cliff, Bromont, Dunham, Lambton, Saint- Adrien, Scotstown, Stanstead, and Waterloo to be ready for an official launch sometime late this year or early next year.At the same time the community of Potton has started the process, and at least one other community is in talks to join the project.Michel Nissan GT-R first drive -, on M i(if: Mil /B PHOTO: M.ST-PIERRE QUTO ooo .com By Mathieu St-Pierre Düsseldorf, Germany — While there’s nothing posh about a gun being fired, Nissan wants you to believe that the new 2017 Nissan GT-R can be civilized, comfortable even, all the while breaking your neck when you cock the hammer, or rather, put it down.If Nissan’s hyper-performance car is anything at all, it is a crazy-fast and powerful means to cover ground. In any drag race, it leaves for dead most supercars with a retail price twice as large. But can it also do all of this in a lap of luxury akin to a Mercedes-AMG GT or an Aston Martin Vanquish?I’m sorry, there’s no way.Be that as it may, Nissan has gone to great lengths to improve Godzilla’s overall refinement level — picture the big lizard in a tuxedo.Yeah, that’s about right. He’s still unsightly and does not clean up nicely. He will however tear a city to shreds and that’s what he’s good at.The GT-R should stick to what it’s good at.Cleaning up its act The whole reasoning here is to attract more buyers, those who might not consider the Nissan GT-R because it’s rougher around the edges.Although I’ve never taken a shine to the beast, I must say that I was completely against the idea of sacrificing the R35’s known essence in order to please those who have more money than taste or brains.Once the cloud of resentment finally passed and I got to drive the car, not much had changed.I did however fall under the spell of its twin-tur-bocharged 3.8LV6.Raw and immensely powerful, it reminded me of The Beach Boys’ Little Deuce Coupe song whose lyrics go like this : “Cause if I had a set of wings man I know she could fly.” VR38DETT The 2017 Nissan GT-R’s 565 horsepower and 467 lb-ft of torque (up 20 and 4, respectively) are a result of revised ignition timing and more boost a la NISMO, but the specs tell only a portion of the story. On an open stretch of Autobahn, the GT-R will lasso the horizon and yank it as hard as it can towards itself, as it did, but the new power is available over a larger section of the rev range. This means that repeated throttle punches are met with instantaneous forward surges — fantastic for passing manoeuvres.Nissan has not released official acceleration times or top speed numbers, but they are said to be nearly identical to those of the 2016 car.Expect the 0-100 km/h sprint to still be covered in less than 3 seconds and top speed to remain at just over 310 km/h.The experience of driving the Nissan GT-R has changed, though.More refined If you’re a fan of the GT-R, you’ll likely have heard of the M-Spec R34.This refined 2nd generation GT-R realigned the car with its original roots, which were more Grand Touring than Race (hence the name). That’s what the 2017 model intends to emulate. The cabin is now quieter at speed thanks to improved aerodynamics. Not only that, but Nissan engineers have also optimized downforce generation for increased stability at high velocities.Apparently, it kicks in at 200 km/h.I did hit 250 km/h at one point, but I couldn’t tell you if the job done made it any better. What I can tell you about are my laps around the Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in Belgium. In a massive downpour. It won’t talk to me I’ve never liked the Nissan GT-R’s steering or its overall handling.I’ve driven the car a half-dozen times over the last eight years, and every time I felt that the steering wheel was connected to a controller, then a box, an electrical motor, and finally the front wheels. In other words, communication between the road and the driver is next to nil.I have to believe that the front tires are acting on command, but that moment’s void is scary. On the track, the big GT-R demonstrated its massive power and incredible brakes. It also displayed loads of body roll and understeer as the suspension squatted a surprising amount in hard corners.Although that did little to affect the car, if only because I was driving a 5/10,1 still could not get a handle on the front end.Until it did All drive settings were set to Race for this portion of the test with the 2017 Nissan GT-R.I was able to notice the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system doing its thing. The best example was coming out of the La Source hairpin where the front pulled me clear of the apex as the rear struggled for grip under acceleration.I did experience an aha-moment when, on a country road near the Nürburgring, I went for it and trusted that I wasn’t going to end up in the woods, 300 metres from the tarmac. As the front suspension compressed, it was as though a connection was made, like an electrical circuit closing, permitting a free flow of information.Suddenly, the GT-R was talking to me.Alas, I had to return the keys only 10 minutes later. That luxury I was talking about As part of the 2017 Nissan GT-R rediscovering its GT car roots, the cockpit was cleaned up and now features far fewer visible buttons and controls. The dashboard’s sleeker and much more upscale look tastefully combines leather and contrast stitching. The changes to the exterior shell may be less obvious, but I promise you they are as numerous. The corporate “V-motion” grille takes centre stage, of course, while the remainder of the front fascia was tweaked for the aforementioned aerodynamics and also for enhanced component cooling. To sum up, the new 2017 Nissan GT-R has grown more luxurious, but is still as subtle as a gunshot.I doubt these enhancements will do much to increase the car’s appeal especially in the face of its many competitors that continue to evolve and improve. The GT-R’s main advantages are still its outrageous speed and relatively affordable pricing ($125,000 for the top-line Premium model).Aluminized steel & stainless steel mufflers | 3 at the shelter Record Staff Sherbrooke Since the beginning of the month, more than 200 cats have come through the doors of the Estrie SPA hoping to find a new family.Nearly thirty cats aged between two months and seven years are already available for adoption, and more than sixty others will be in the coming days after they are sterilized, vaccinated, de-wormed, and micro-chipped by the medical team at the shelter.Besides these, forty cats currently in foster care will return shortly to SPA."If you intend to adopt a cat soon, the time couldn’t be better because diversity is waiting for you,” says SPA communications director Cathy Bergeron.“We are currently hosting as many kittens as cats, with more varied personalities and physical features." “Of the 203 received in total, only ten were already neutered when entering our doors," Bergeron says, emphasizing the importance of sterilization."This act has several benefits, including the prevention of various diseases, decreased aggression in males, and eliminating ‘heat; in females." Choosing to sterilize a feline companion is also choosing to indirectly help thousands of other cats."By preventing unwanted litters, neutering consequently helps reduce cat overpopulation in the region and to unclog shelters struggling with this problem," said.Bergeron.Cats voluntarily abandoned by their families, are added those that have been found and brought to the SPA and there are some 125 cats in this situation."These animals arrived at the shelter with no collar, so no identification, Bergeron says.’’However, most obviously have a family somewhere, because they are very social animals and healthy."Despite the regulations in several Estrie municipalities requiring registration of pets, including cats, it is clear that several owners did not always respect this obligation, she adds.’’But an identified cat will almost surely return home compared to one that is not, as the SPA Estrie medallion is the perfect tool to find the family of runaway or lost cat." Bergeron reminds pet owners that runaways happen much more often than people think."Animal behavior is unpredictable and our statistics speak for themselves: every day we get calls from people who have lost their cat, and every day we welcome stray cats, "she concludes.^ I (COURTESY) Over four members of the eventing team, and will be riding Peter Barry’s horse Quorry Blue d’Argouges in the games.Loach said she has been working with this horse for approximately two and a half
