By Louise Smith Heroes’ Memorial School on Rue Sud (South Street) began as a smaller school, known as Cowansville High School, in 1923.It housed elementary and high school students.Later on it got the name of Heroes’ Memorial to honour the people who had served in the “Great War” of World War I.The dates 1914-1918 are on a plaque in the side of the building facing rue Sud.A second plaque showing 1939-1945 was added to the building after the Second World War.In the past, boys and girls entered separate doors.Things have changed and yet some things have remained the same.Heroes’ currently has a Community Day Care School for three-and four-year-olds and the school itself runs classes from Kindergarten to Secondary One (Grade Seven). It has always been closely associated with the town of Cowansville.Over the years Heroes’ Memorial has remained a central part of the community, locally, provincially, and nationally. It has become famous with the Terry Fox Run Foundation gaining the nickname of “The Little School That Can!” Consistently the school raises thousands of dollars for cancer research in Terry’s name on an annual basis. The school was once honoured to have had Terry’s mom, Betty Fox, as a visitor.A Community School for adults runs every September to November, one night a week, with courses ranging from line dancing to Spanish to teddy bear making and cake decorating. It has been operating for decades! The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch no.99, is just up the street and it has close ties to the school. An amazing and respectful Remembrance Day assembly is annually organized by the school, with members of the Legion as honoured participants.Every year the students participate in a poster and writing contest to commemorate Remembrance Day.Several times students’ work has gone on to win at the national level. This year was no exception — Sarah Sevigny came in second place for her poem. The Legion actively supports the breakfast program at the school. The Lions Club of Cowansville sponsors a Peace Poster campaign in October HEROES iVIEJVIOR'AL n a mm MMMMmjÉË ; i M it y i [ - E 5 Facade of Heroes' Memorial with the plaques honouring the men and women who served Canada in the two world wars.PHOTOS BY LOUISE SMITH Heroes’ Memorial School can always be counted on to honour the value of Remembrance Day.for the senior students. It too helps to support the breakfast program.Students exercised their writing talents in two other contests, that of the Women’s Institutes of Quebec and in the Bright Lights Contest sponsored by Julia Rohan and the Brome Lakes Book Store in Knowlton.Kaylah Patch, with two different pieces of writing, won at the provincial level for the Women’s Institutes of Quebec, and as the overall top writer in the Brome Bright Lights Contest. This year Michael Herman, through his bicycle recovery program, provided bicycles for many students at the school.Bicycle riding, once or twice a week, became the norm.Imagination and innovation are both valued at the school level. Many classes have mini science fairs and the French teachers encourage French speaking through special activities, which this year involved robot building in the second cycle.A gardening project transformed the outside grounds of the school.A special team, sponsored by the Parent Participa- tion Organization, transformed the school library in May.Artist Marcio Melo was brought in to breathe life into the hallways of the school with art focusing on the community partners in the school’s environment.Music, under the loving guidance of Laura Barr, resonates throughout the school and into the community. There is a school choir and a band.Students participated in the Music Festival of the school board at Massey-Vanier.A special Christmas concert with guest Amos Joannides raised money for food baskets at Christmas.A full house Talent Show rocked the stage in the spring. So much more is happening at this school with a heart. It would take pages to get it all in!
