V V in pop culture (think Louise Penny's fictional town, Three Pines to reference a current example), there is a little show that really could have been set here, but that wasn't.In October of 2000, Warner Brothers television launched Gilmore Girls, a series set in a small Connecticut town, featuring thirty-something single mother Lorelai Gilmore, raising her teenage daughter Rory Gilmore. The show follows the ups and downs (and love lives) of Lorelai, who disgraced her wealthy, prominent family name by becoming pregnant as a teenager, and leaving to raise her daughter (whom she also named Lorelai, nicknamed Rory) on her own, leaving the prestige of Hartford and her family estate for work at an inn in the small town of Stars Hollow.Gilmore Girls ran for seven seasons, ending in May of 2007.With small town activities and plans, festivities and plenty of gossiping, well, it sure could have taken place here. For years friends raved about the show, but not having cable meant a rather particular dedication (ie.buying the series, or landing in on folks with cable on a weekly basis) if I was going to follow the show. That being said, I've never minded arriving late to the party, or the trend for that matter.Herein lies the beauty of online streaming service Netflix, where one can sample so many movies and shows, new and old.and where the viewers truly set the trends.Shows are developed for Netflix based on what people watch, such as award-winning American political drama show (the first series launched by Netflix) House of Cards.Nine years late to the party, Gilmore Girls was one of the 'why not give it a try' series featured that I opted to sample this fall.and just in time. What with the popularity of this series, Netflix opted to revisit the small town of Stars Hollow, and the Gilmore gals that gave the show its name.Even Tonight Show Host Jimmy Fallon has jumped on board late, sharing his enthusiasm with viewers, and attempting to view as much of the seven seasons as possible before the November 25th four-part mini-series produced by Netflix, designed to capture a year in the life of this beloved mother-daughter pair.Over the years, many celebrities appeared on Gilmore Girls before they were stars, including Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill, Agent Carter), Seth MacFarlane (creator of Family Guy), Jane Lynch (Glee), Masi Oka (Heroes), Adam Brody (The O.C.), Abigail Spencer (All My Children, Cowboys Vs.Aliens), Emily Bergl (Desperate Housewives), Melissa McCarthy (Ghostbusters, Bridesmaids), Liza Weil (How to Get Away With Murder) and of course including Rory's love interests Jared Padalecki (Dean, best known for his role as Sam on Supernatural) and Milo Ventimiglia (Jess, now appearing on the new program This is Us).I thought it was going to he hokey.Very cute, and very hokey.Too polished, too cute, too hokey.and while I'm a fan of cute and hokey from time-to-time, there just wasn't enough pull to get me there, invested in viewing (I'm not much of a t.v.buff).until this fall.Turns out, Gilmore Girls isn't as hokey as I thought it was going to be, and although it's cute, with the most rapid-fire line delivery just about ever, it's also really, really good. There's more privilege than you can shake a wad of hills at, but there's also a lot of hard work, a good dose of exploring values, and it's much less pre- dictable than I thought it was going to be.The characters are likable, the sets are simple and there's something comforting about the whole thing -1 suspect it's our Townships upbringing - that feeling that this all could have happened here.I was surprised when my eleven-year-old son began enjoying the show, and asking me if he'd missed anything. The show features inter-generational relationships, including the connection with Lorelai's wealthy parents. In a side plotline Lorelai's mother Emily (Kelly Bishop) disapproves of her husband (the late Edward Hermann) Richard's moustache.A few days later my son was watching an episode with me, and piped up, 'I don't know what's wrong with Emily, Richard's moustache is epic!' I had to laugh. We both agree on our favourite character as well, Stars Hollow's everyman, the awkward and unusual Kirk. There is something a little satisfy-ingly untidy about Gilmore Girls - something just a little in need of repair, something a little frayed that brings it down to earth. The show got me rethinking my views on the child-parent bond - Lorelai and Rory are best friends.I had always been of the mindset that that just wasn't a good idea, that there needed to be a distinction in order to really parent well, but I am thinking again. As my sons grow, and I work out a sensible, healthy value set, I realize that there is a possibility for friendship in there. For closeness and a love of pop culture, for comfort food and cozy nights, for supporting one another through hard work towards life goals.I wasn't expecting to find such a legacy of family relationships in what I had perceived for a good, long stretch of time from far out on the sidelines as a heaping dose of cheese. So, I was wrong-o on two counts.1)\tGilmore Girls is well worth it.2)\tFamily and friends is definitely possible. This new four-installment Gilmore Girls set, returning to Stars Hollow, airs this Thursday, November 25th on Netflix! > If this feels like a math test, visit mathliteracy.ca or call 1-800-303-1004.I I C A I I Math solves problems Literacy Foundation Fondation pour l'alphabétisation Ben by Daniel Shelton THANKS/ ITS MV FIRST SEASGAPE.NICE RANTING I REALLY WANTN THE VIEWER TO FEEL UKE HE IS THERE, TO EE IMMERSE?IN THE FAINTING.I WANT IT TO CONVEY THE SIGHTS, THE ¦SMELL, THE 30ÜNP5-.EVEN THE MOTION WELL, ITS MAKING ME WOW/ THATS THE BEST COMPLIMENT EVER/ press/j'AVW Printed and distributed by PressReader »r.ÜLs
