Ci .Ville À , >* ; Towards the end of the 19th century, animals were ubiquitous in the City of Sherbrooke. In 1873, there were 399 horses, 418 bovines, 445 pigs and 31 sheep. In 1890, in order to improve hygiene and to prevent diseases, the City Council voted to prohibit pigsties within 50 feet of homes and within 100 feet of streets. In 1933, the presence of animals seemed to have dimished. However, the Hospice du Sacré -Cœur still had a pigsty and a chicken coop, while the City of Sherbrooke still operated a stable on Camirand Street.INTERESTED BY HISTORY ?Visit the bilingual exhibit, Sherbrooke, a Place to Call Home, presented in the Andrée-Dés ilets room of the Sherbrooke Historical Society.275 Dufferin, Sherbrooke (Quebec) J1H4M5 Informations : 819-821-5406 LA SOCIÉTÉ D'HISTOIRE DE SHERBROOKE www.histoiresherbrooke.org growing up during WW 2 as well their experience in the Reserve Army.On November 11th all the students from Kindergarten to grade 6 walked to the Cenotaph and lead in the singing of 0 Canada and placed crosses representing the men of Sawyerville who died during both World wars.On a lighter note on November 17th, Danielle Tremblay, Illustrator of the series “Ben entreprend” visited the Cycle One and Two students in Madame Maryse’s French class. She gave tips to the students on how to draw. She also talked to them about persevering to reach their goals and how important it is to stay in school. The students came out of the session enthusiastic about illustrating their own writing.November 30th was an exciting day.We celebrated being respectful and got together in our mixed grade level teams to start making Christmas decorations to put up in the gym for our school play “ A Christmas Wizard of Oz”.The play will be held on Tuesday December 20th at 10:30 a.m.and at 7:00 p.m.All are welcome! plow first, into the police car as it attempts to spread salt on the road.Needless to say, the film provided more than a few laughs for all kinds of people who were not driving on the road in question, but reflecting on the situation, it is a wonder that no one was hurt.It is easy to laugh until you are the person squeezed between two city busses on an icy hill, staring out your windshield at headlights rushing towards you on the wrong side of the highway, or pushing up on your door to climb out of a ditched car.Unpredictable things happen to even the best of drivers when it comes to winter driving. We are in an adjustment period when it comes to road safety and everyone needs to take note; drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike. It is getting colder, there is ice on the roads, and ice makes things slippery.Maybe that seems like it should be obvious but situations like the one in that video from Montreal show that obvious or not, people are just not ready for winter. No matter how good a driver any individual is, the safety of a given road is not in any one person’s hands; it is a combination of the skills of all of the drivers involved, the decisions of anyone decid- ing to walk along or across the street, and the condition of the road itself. In order to really be ready for winter driving, people need to prepare for snow and ice, but also think about all the unpredictable decisions that other people might make on the roads.Drivers: slow down, keep your distance from others, and don’t do anything sudden. If you want to go fast in wintertime, buy yourself a sled. The best tires in the world cannot help someone who hits ice while pushing the speed limit on a crowded road.Pedestrians: look around, and then look around again.Keep your ears open.Remember that fresh snow muffles sound and that ice might make a car slide in the wrong direction with very little notice.Make eye contact and wait for a full stop.Living in the country, driving is a necessity, but it is also always dangerous.Despite all the work and gadgets that have gone into vehicles over the years to make them safer, people are injured or killed in car accidents every day.In 2015, 361 people were killed in automobile accidents in Quebec, alone, which works out to just under one per day of the year.It is not helpful to live in constant anxiety, but it is equally unhelpful to ignore obvious dangers in daily life.Unpredictable things are going to happen on the roads and there is only so much you can do to prepare for that, but it is important to do as much as possible. If nothing else, slow down.Moving more slowly gives a driver more time to react and more control when you need it.Relax, focus on the road, and don’t assume that others are going to drive safely on your behalf. If the cost of arriving alive is being a few minutes late, then that’s a price worth paying. If, after all that, you still feel like you are the driver who needs to speed and cut people off to get where you’re going in the middle of a snowstorm, then just remember to ask yourself whether this is the day you’re willing to kill or be killed, because that’s what it comes down to, in the end.RECORD 6 Mallory, Sherbrooke, Quebec JIM 2E2 Fax: 819-821-3179 e-mail : newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Website: www.sherbrookerecord.com Sharon McCully Pubusher .(819) 569-9511 Stephen Blake Corresp.Editor.(819) 569-6345 Serge Gagnon Chief Pressman.(819) 569-9931 DEPARTMENTS Accounting___ Advertising __ Circulation Newsroom .(819) 569-9511 (819) 569-9525 (819) 569-9528 (819) 569-6345 Knowlton office 5B Victoria Street, Knowlton, Quebec, JOE 1V0 Tel: (450) 242-1188 Fax: (450) 243-5155 PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS GST PST TOTAL Quebec: 1 YEAR 135,60 6,78 13.53 $155.91 6 MONTHS 71,19 3,56 7,10 $81.85 3 MONTHS 36,16 1.81 3,60 $41.57 ON-LINE SUBSCRIPTIONS Quebec: 1 YEAR 71,50 3.58 7,13 $82.21 1 MONTH 6,49 0.32 0,65 $7.46 Rates for out of Quebec and for other services available on request. The Record is published daily Monday to Friday.Back copies of The Record are available. The Record was founded on February 9,1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.PM#0040007682 Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to The Record, 1195 Galt East, Sherbrooke, QC JIG 1Y7 Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA WE'VE ALSO APPROVED ANOTHER PIPELINE PROJECT DESIGNED TO BOOST CAPACITY.CASIKOR-ACCESS PIPELINE JT l&ERAl r l I PARTY Letters Dear Editor; Our ever-vigilant, and, I guess, by logical extension, -faithful reader K.M.takes us to task yet again for a transgression, this time for our star reviewer Melanie Cutting’s assessment of Margaret Atwood’s alleged lust for attention and notoriety. You will recall from “Good Reads” of December 2nd that Cutting contrasted Atwood—along with other writers who “seek out fame” and “for whom name recognition is the key to book sales and other rewards”—rather unflatteringly with the noble Elena Ferrante, who eschews the limelight to such an extent that her actual identity is unknown.K.M.’s criticism is fair enough.Atwood seemed fairly diffident, if not downright touchy, in many of her early interviews. And her continued reluctance to put herself forward is, I am sure, a frequent topic amongst her more than 424,000 Twitter followers. It is to her credit that in spite of her naturally withdrawn temperament CBC keeps trotting her out for sociopolitical commentary on an astounding breadth of issues.Part of me almost expects any day to see her in a cameo on Murdoch Mysteries! And even more to Atwood’s credit, she made it to 32nd spot on one website’s list of the 50 most influential Torontonians. As for dear Elena Ferrante, she tweets not neither does she spin. And, in spite of her anonymity, she made it onto Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2016.But I sense the response of some readers: “Comparisons are otiose!” Quite right, quite right! There's a Van Morrison song “Into the Mystic” from his 1970 album “Moondance” that jumped into my head the moment my pen hit the paper. The music and lyrics are hypnotic. They describe a journey when you “let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic”.Mysticism is not something to look up in dictionary. There is no textbook entitled “Mysticism for Dummies” at least I hope not. It's not a subject we can sign up for in school or pass an exam about.I believe, as Van Morrison sings, it is a journey, a lifelong journey.Often we need some spark to help us get started.Perhaps some personal crisis makes a person search inside for meaning.Maybe a spiritual peak moment at a retreat is the first step for someone.Others may find that an inspiring book by someone like Malala is the spark for change.A beautiful sunset over Lake Massawippi maybe moment we start the journey. The moment of inspiration is different for all of us.Mysticism has been a lifelong quest for me.I look back on so many experiences that have led me “into the mystic".A retreat as a teenager at Parkside Ranch, an ordination service at St.James United in Montreal, a vespers service at camp, a Youth Forum where we lit candles as we shared prayers. Each of these experiences has let my soul and spirit fly.Van Morrison says it best: “You don't have to fear it.I want to rock your gypsy soul and together we will flow into the mystic”.) "God's joy moves from unmarked box to unmarked box." wrote the 13th century Sufi poet Rumi, " like rainwater down into flowerbed, like roses up from ground." He was using the language of mysticism to describe a chance encounter with God even in the busy market place, or perhaps watching deckhands unload cargo.Rumi's engagement with The Great Mystery -whom he himself calls the Lover, the Guest, the Friend - unleashed a fountain of spirit energy that overflowed into thousands of lyric poems.Remember Augustine's equation "God is love"?A popular riddle asks if love a noun or a verb - a quantifiable object to be sought and possessed, or an activity to engage us in being fully alive. To be "in love with" the mystery is to forgo mind's need to define or explain.Creeds are inadequate, theological formulas unnecessary.Only experience is real, and as Rumi says elsewhere, "language itself doesn't make any sense." As a young girl discovering the Christian mystics I understood little, but I felt called.Enough to enter a monastery where one day I sat reading Thomas Merton's Seeds of Contemplation, and came upon his caution that to few of us would it be given to "cultivate our souls like hothouse plants." By then I knew enough about myself to realize that, rather than a "bird of Paradise," I was happy to be a common daisy, alive in the open field.Soon after this insight, I left the monastery, but still keep to the path of the contemplative life, now in a world of action.Drawn on by voices of the mystical poets Kabir, Hafiz, Mirabai, Rumi and others who describe being on intimate terms with the divine as Lover, Guest, or Friend. However feeble, their words point to a way.I'm still working on the experience.Out of the busyness of any day, how comforting it is to welcome wonder and awe, where knowing slips silently away.Rather than hitting a wall, it's more as if somewhere in the heart a door opens, onto vistas beyond any that can be imagined.4) When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I pursued the mystical path. The goal was union with God.The experiences I had were powerful. But I have come to later understand, they were without depth.I am sure many of these experiences were manufactured from the longing of my mind. What I know now is that the mystics of old, who have walked the path before us, never sought to be mystics. They never seek the experience. What they seek is to be the best Christian they can be, the best Buddhist they can be, the best Muslim they can be.Mystics follow the practices of their faith and, sometimes, for whatever reason, they experience the feeling of union with God.Many mystics warn against the seeking after experience.Saint Therese (sp?) was ashamed of her powerful mystical experiences. She noticed how her fellow Sisters remained faithful without such encounters of closeness and thought it must have been because of her weakness that God gave her such visions and miracles. When Thomas Merton sought spiritual direction, he began by sharing with his spiritual director about his profound mystical encounters. His spiritual director slowly shook is head and said "Things will be much harder for you. This will be a difficult thing to let go of." Mysticism happens. Some people, some times, have deep and profound experiences of God.But we don't need to seek after them.Just remain faithful.Continue in the practices of your faith. And seek to do good.God will come and find you however God sees best and we leave that for His wisdom. One word, four voices - now it's your turn: Does mysticism have a place in your life?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Hatley, Waterville & North Hatley United Churches; Rev.Lynn Dillabough is now Rector of St.Paul’s in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco pastors UUEstrie -the Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley.WE NEED A HELPING HAND THIS HOLIDAY! can start a fire, lay beside ya/all night right here/ The snow’s cornin’ down/ and it won’t be the only thing falling/ So let’s stay here to-gether/Under the weather.” On the second original, “It Must Be Christmas,” he evokes an emotion of what the holiday is all about. The lyrics describe perfectly how at this time of the year, people are reminded of what they love most about the family, friends, and the need to be more generous. It is pure joy to hear him sing: “All you see is red and green/people wearing winter coats/every church has a nativity for everyone to see/that’s how you know/When there’s lights on every street/Snowflakes on everything/Weil it’s just what you’ve been waiting for all year/When you believe in Santa Claus/When you give gifts just be-cause/And you drive all night only to be near/the one’s you love/Weil it must be Christmas.” Well, this is a perfect album to add to your Christmas collection. The reasons are numerous, starting with Chris Young’s beautiful voice, the flawless production, the choice of songs. It’s all perfect.such a confounding issue when you stand away from it,” the Oscar-nominated English director behind “Shakespeare in Love” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” said during a recent stop in Toronto, where he filmed “Miss Sloane.” “You just don’t really understand how it’s possible, one catastrophe after another.I found actually watching (U.S.President) Obama’s response to I don’t know how many major atrocities happened in his eight-year term, far too many, obviously — he became increasingly speechless, a man who is supposed to make speeches after those kind of events.“The failure of any legislative response that had any meaning .it’s quite amazing; the stranglehold over that policy that one part of the argument has, one vested interest has.” First-time scriptwriter Jonathan Per-era penned the plot-twist-filled story, which co-stars Toronto native Alison Pill, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, John Lithgow, Sam Waterston and Mark Strong, among others.Chastain’s character is a flawed heroine who seems to have lost touch with her humanity. In the office, she manipulates members of her team to achieve a certain outcome.Outside the office, she has no intimate relationships and has to pay for sex and also grapples with chronic insomnia.“That strand of the story is a strange inversion,” Madden said, “because women are so often defined in movies by their sexuality or their sexual presence. They’re usually not in control of those scenes. In this case, this person is.” Madden said the film is not a polemic on the issue of gun control, noting it’s balanced and more about the protagonist’s journey and the political process itself. But it’s become a lightning rod for online debates over the issue, he concedes.“Clearly we know this is a topic that provokes passionate arguments on both sides, but of course that’s become greatly intensified — because I’m sure we’ve been demonized as bleeding-heart, liberal, Hollywood kind of taking on an issue we should just shut up about,” he said.“But it’s about other things, besides which have also become very hot topics — the role of women, for example, the role of empowered women in any kind of political discussion is shot right to the forefront of the agenda in what we might call presidential discourse.“That’s probably crediting it with too much dignity, but it’s important that that is out there as some kind of antidote to the world we seem to be sliding towards now.”
