[" 2017 Resolutions Editorial - Page 6 ¦ the» RECORD The voice of the Eastern Townships since 1897 Canada slams Slovakia in 5-0 shutout Sports - Page 7 75 CENTS + TAXES First holiday in a new home By Matthew McCully ££ I find Christmas very sad.A lot of people don\u2019t have the things everybody else does,\u201d said Shirley Thompson.While she was fortunate enough to be with family during the holidays, Thompson was spending her first Christmas at St.Francis Manor, having moved into the residence in August.\u201cIt\u2019s quiet, but I\u2019m getting used to it,\u201d she said, describing her new home.\u201cI had a hard time when I first arrived,\u201d Thompson said.\u201cIt\u2019s a big change from a three-and-a half apartment into one room.\u201d Thompson had to downsize substantially before moving.\u201cThere was a lot of stuff I would have liked to have kept,\u201d she said.\u201cI wasn\u2019t around to sell it,\u201d Thompson said, explaining that her daughter took care of the sale of her belongings.Thompson is from Lennoxville.She was married, but divorced shortly after, raising four children with the help of her parents.She worked as a cigarette girl at Hill-crest Lodge, before becoming a jewelry maker, working for a number of different companies over the years.She recalled leaving her first job at Continental Jewelry in Montreal because her boss \u2018got a little fresh.\u2019 \u201cYou could lose your job,\u201d he told Thompson, when she pointed to his inappropriate behaviour.\u201cI\u2019m leaving now,\u201d she replied.\u201cYou won\u2019t be able to find another job,\u201d her boss added, as she walked out the door.Thompson called his bluff and was working less than a week later for a different company.In recent years she had a three-and-a-half apartment in Lennoxville, but ended up spending most of her time Cont\u2019d on page 3 PM#0040007682 Thursday, December 29, 2016 Jessica Hobbs on taking a festive approach to city life mmmi j (bl'-il\u2014F \t\t1\tV.\tB !¦\t¦ [I\tBjl \tHk\tWrl f\tpHp\t11\t^¦wxmebiI\tJessica \tWTvt -M!\t JODYANDRASI After moving to Montreal from the Townships and faced with challenges of finding work and a new social environment, photographer Jessica Hobbs decided to stay positive about the world by going to as many of the city\u2019s festivals as she possibly could over the course of a year.By Gordon Lambie Feeling unsure of what to do with herself after having moved to Montreal from the Eastern Townships with her boyfriend Jody, photographer Jessica Hobbs took the saying \u201cturn that frown upside down\u201d to a whole new level.\u201cI was really struggling to try to find my place in the city,\u201d Hobbs said.\u201dHav-ing grown up in the Townships it was kind of like culture shock to be living in the big city even though it was some- thing we both always thought would happen.\u201d Faced with challenges finding work and a new social environment, the photographer decided to stay positive about the world by going to as many of the city\u2019s festivals as she possibly could over the course of the next year.\u201cI needed something new, something different from my usual ideas,\u201d Hobbs said, \u201cI had no idea where it was going to go or that it was going to get like this.\u201d \u201cLike this\u201d the photographer ex- plained, is a massive, year-long time commitment that has, at times, meant going to take photos at five different festivals in one day and, in the month of June, going to 32 separate celebrations, all on her own dime.After getting the idea at the end of February 2016, she started on March 4 and hasn\u2019t looked back.\u201cI think I did 14 in the month of March, and the next thing I knew it just snowballed.\u201d Hobbs recalled, \u201cThere Cont\u2019d on page 4 Richmond 151 Route 116, Ri from the Toyota Richmond Team ® TOYOTA RICHMOND Season\u2019s Greetings and best wishes pressljJft'l-JJ Printed and distributed by PressReader £f\u201e
