breathing a spirit of loyalty and patriotism. The greatness of Mont: real was dwelt upon at some length and tbe fact pointed out that it was the natural port for Northwestern products. In the evening the party accepted an invitation to attend the Opera House, where Fanny Reeves is starring.Tomorrow the party leaves for home by the regular train, after visiting St.Boniface and other points of interest in the vicinity. There has been another advance in wheat throughout Manitoba during the past week, the rise being ten cents.Grain merchants discussing the question say competition for buyers for local mills was the cause for the increase Mill owners here recoznizs tte fact there is left in the Northwest mre than enough wheat to keep their mills running until tlie next crop is harvested, and unless they are to be idle they must secure ail in sight, competition therefore has raised the price to a point at which nearly all grain merchants who handle wheat on margin cannot afford to the last few days and rapidly gained in importance. The wife of a member of the Civil service has, says the Frec Press, eloped with a well known “ man about town.” The names are given. They are known to have left town last Thursday. The deserted husband is lying seriously ill at home from the effects of the blow. The facis of the case given by a friend who states that be was an eye witness to most of them is as follows: “The husband returned to the city early last week from New York, where he had gone to seek medical advice.Immediately on his return he discovered things were not what they should be af lome.During his absence for several weeks the paramour is sald to have been a great frequenter of the house. The husband suspected from one or two incidents that came under his notice that the visitor was rather more intimate with his wife than Was necessary. The climax came on Wednesday. On the evening of that day several friends, including the two elopers, were at the civil servant's house playing cards and otherwise amusing themselves. The young Lothario on leaving the house was followed by the lady of the house. They were out at the gate of the garden rather longa: than the chilly nights made com- fortabie, and the husvand went down to see to his wife’s welfare. He overheard enough, unwillingly, to discover the plans of the pair, and saw the young man caress his wife before parting. There were other witnesses to this also. The distracted husband immediately endeavoured to save the honour of his name, and a dramatic scene is said to have been enacted. The husband implored his wife to look well before she took a step which was bound to destroy their good name and ruin their home.He prayed her for the sake of home, honour and children, and even for the sake of one little one in the grave to stop before too late.Remonstrances were in vain and threats only angered. The husband then procured a revolver and blinded with passion and rage attempted as à last resort to save his name from shame by attacking the other party. He had sent a message to him saying: “If you ever cross my path I'll kill you.” - The husband went to the depot in search of the paramour but failed to find. His last remonstrance were useless with his wife and the train steamed out of the station bearing her away to the arms of her partner in guilt, who is believed to have gone ahead. The husband then went back to his home.Several letters have been received in Ottawa during the last few days from the couple. The husband was seen tbis afternoon at bis residence by a reporter. He was in bed and looked miserably ill.He preferred not to discuss the matter, but it was too true.He stated that he had several troubles just now in addition to this one and it was a severe blow.He seemed completely prostrated. He said that when he was better he would give the true version of the affair, but at present be feit too ill to talk much.Strike of Gas Workers.Loxpox, Dec.5.—The municipal gas «workers of Mancuester lodged notice of an intended strike but subsequently withdrew it.The managers refused to accept the withdrawal and locked the men out.“Blacklegs” were taken on in place of the locked out men and are being housed and fed at the works. The strikers are in an ugly and menacing mood. The city was only half lighted last night.A Much-Needed Adulteration Law.Wasgrnarox, D.C., Dec.5.—A bill to prevent the adulteration of articles of food will be introduced in the House shortly by Major Ben.Butterworth.It will MONTREAL HORTICUL TURAL SOCIETY AND FRUIT GROWERS AsSO0CIATION—Fraser Institute, at 8 p.m.RIMOUSKI SAFE.The contest in Rimouski has resulted in the election of Mr.Tessier, the Liberal eandidate. The Tories will be sadly disappointed, for they were very confident of success. We fear that Sir Hector Langevin will not be pleased at this result, and it will give Mr.Chapleau an opportunity of making faces at his senior colleague.Tne province generally will have cause for felicitation.Every seat carried is an additicnal prop to the Government, which is reduciug the chaos of Ross- Taillon into something like order, and keeping the predatory hordes from the treasury of the province. The majority by which Mr, Tessier is elected is variously reported. One telegraphic correspondent puts it at 178, others at a smaller figure. It is sufficient, however, to prevent the calamity.which threatened the county, and which, we grieve to say, several journals who ought to have known better, affected to desire.— _— 4 CHANGE REQUIRED.The Hamilton Times thinks that when the United States bave paid off their debt and reduced their tariff, there will be a big annexation boom in Canada.Probably there will be, but there is no necessity for the feeling of discontent being allowed to grow to that extent. The general public of Canada will not, of course, consent to a continuance of the system by which the great majority of the people are fleeced to make the fortunes of a few men, but there are many indications of the fact that Sir John Macdonald and his regime of plunder will not be {allowed to remain.Everywhere is heard the remarks that the N.P.has been here long enough, that the burdens imposed by the present Government are already too large, that the system of purchasing members of Parliament cannot any longer be tolerated, and that it is time Sir John went. Before looking to annexation as a remedy, the results of a change of Government should be tried. The majority o ‘the people are against annexation, thongh they are willing to admit that it cannot he long delayed if the present system is continued. Many think that if Canada cannot remain a portion of the British Empire it might at least form a nationality of its own.The young men of Canada who remain in their own country have laudable aspirations in this direction. Many are driven into the States by the conditions resulting from the refusal of the Government to increase the trade of the country in a legitimate way, but those who resist the temptations elsewhere offered are inclined to try what they can do as men having a nationality derived from their native land.Canada has as much chance of becoming a portion of Saturn as of permauently continuing her career as an overtaxed, highly tariffed dependency of a country beyond the sea, but tbere is no immutable law proscribing a cramping, deadening policy, which empties the country of its growing youth and converts its remaining population into mere eollectors of money for a privileged commercial class.Under different auspices Canada has a fair chance of taking her place amongst the nations of the earth, though year by year this chance becomes jess while the present Government is permitted to remain at Ottawa, ———— — ss Tink Government organ at Calgary does not take kindly to the proposition ofthe Manitoba Government to amalgs- mate the Northwest districte with Manitoba, and says it won’t ba done till Sir Johu iz “hnsted.” This may be another reason for unating Sir John.IREATY MAKING.Our esteemed contemporary the Gazelle was good enough yesterday to explain at some length that once upon & time the task of negotiating a business arrangement with a foreign country was, for Canada, a tedious affair much hampered with red tape, until Jack the Giant Killer —we should say Sir Alexander Galt— took his sword in hand and cut the red tape here and there and everywhere until only one binding shred was left. Then Sir Charles Tupper fretting under even this one remaining restraint unsheathed bis Excaliber and in a twinkling Canada was free—to negotiate with Spain. If these were the old Roman days we should have statues of theee twin benefactors of the Republic—we should say the Dominion—on the Capitol hill, but in these degenerate times we calmly look on while Sir Charles Tupper negotiates treaty after treaty with Spain, and we say nothing. Not even a laurel wreath has been voted for Sir Charles, and yet we should be afraid to say how many treaties our pro-consul in Europe has negotiated with Spain since visiting Madrid for the first time as an untrammelled, full-fledged, do-as-he-pleased Canadian-British, or British-Canadian, ambassador. The only draw-back to these native home-made treaties with Spain is that they do nct materialize, so to speak ; nothing comes of them beyond the satisfaction of knowing tbat Sir Charles was a greater grandee than any Canadian who had ever before visited Spain. But if anyone required to import some Seville oranges to-morrow it would be found that there was a duty to be paid, and we have the example of the peaches before us to know how Mr.Bowell would be down on the baskets, So though we are told by the trumpeter-general of this district that “ while Sir Alex.Galt had got rid of the “ circumlocution of the Colonial office “* =x # Sir Charles Tupper cut this ** last gordian knot,” &c., &c., the melancholy fact remains that Canada is just where she wae in her relations with Spain, and that in spite of the frequent ambassardorial trips of Sir Charles we get “no forrerder.” As for Sir Alexander Galt be wisely dropped Spain and the banks of the Guuadelquiver to interest himself in more promising coal fields of the Northwest. But if it is good that Canada should be entirely free to negotiate what commercial treaty she pleases with Spain, wby not wiih the United States and all other countries.Cannot Sir Charles make another onslaught on the red tape that holds us back from bartering with our neighbours.Could not Sir Alexander be induced to strike the first blow as he did in the other case. Why freedom to barter with the haughty Don three thousand miles away, but shackles on our intercourse with the friendly Yank so close at hand.Is it supposed ia England that the Deminion has no statesmen competent to tackle the astute American, and that the services of Lord Sackville West or some other highly respectable person from Great Britain is necessary to us?Experience has not taught Canada to believe that she is much benefitted by the treaty operations of English statesmen on this continent. The general opinion rather inclines to the theory that, were she at liberty to do so, Canada could conduct her own treaties very much better without the interference of Downing street deputies. Were it not that we could point to Spain and Don Carlos—we should say Sir Charles—we might, though we hardly think we should, feel a little timid at suggesting the propriety of Canada being allowed to attend to and manage her own commercial agreements, because the protecting ægis of the Spaniard alone prevents our being called “disloyal,” and our being told that the first time we go out walking in our tracks we shall be shot. Our own opinion of the Spanish business is that it is a pretentious fraud of little or no usefulness to Canada, and that while the ministerial press is making loud and vain boasts about what Sir Charles and Sir Alexander have done in Spain, the attention of the country is drawn away from considering what a few plain Misters might do in effecting a treaty with the United States were they free to doso.— Tne Mail raises an alarm about the possible demands of Quebec and the Maritime Provinces for increasea subsidies or financial relief in some form, and commiserates Ontario on having to pav.But Ontario has practically told Sir John to go ahead and never mind the cost, and there are no indications that it dislikes contributing to the local expenses of otber Provinces. If the people of Ontario objected they would have asked Sir John to take a much needed rest, but they gave him a majority at the last general elections, and it is fair to assume that they are more generous than the Muil thinks them.We shall need some money here to repair the ravages of the Tory Government fastened on this Province by Sir John.— .- _ SIR Joux MACDONALD is voudned to bis bed, and a rumor has spread that he is about to retire from political life. The recent promotion of his private secretary is taken as supporting this story. We trust that Sir John’s ilinees may be of a temporary characi~r, and due only to those causes which are apt to affect most | elderly people at the beginning of winter. We have no hard feeling towards the man, and we hope to see the politician in the enjoyment of full health and strength when the Liberal party goes marching through Georgia, so to speak.= - Tax United States were once a Democratic and Bepublican nation. They can hardly be considered 30 now. They have no titled aristocracy but they have allowed the control of the national life to pass into the hands of a comparatively speaking emall number of men who are infinitely more to be dreaded than any set of Barons since the Wars of the Roses. The only comforting reflection about the matter is that the people of the United States will one day riee and the trusts will go down.— 0 me TORONTO WORLD :—A clergyman is lecturing in England on Canada. The title of his lecture is “The Land of the Red Skin.” Out this way a notion prevails that we have got over that stage of our existence.Probably someone has been telling the reverand gentleman that we have a high “protective” system in Canada, and he has naturally concluded that we are still in a measure uncivilized.‘WHAT OTHERS SAY.AMALGAMATE, That the legislative union of the territories and the prairie province would mean a vast economy, the savings of many thousands & year, goes without saying. That it would lead to responsible government, so far at least as the territories are concerned, dare not be disputed by those who have read of the farcical proceedings enacted by the lieu- tenant-governor quite recently at Regina.— Kingston Whig.QUITE LARGE ENOUGH.We believe the North American con- tineat is large enough for two independent nations, if the relations between the two were always friendly, but as Canada is situated she needs to make a thoroughfare through Maine, New Hampshire and New York, and if she cannot have that privilege without annexation, then annexation will come some day. That millions of intelligent men should settle down permanently to earn money, in order to pay tribute to a few millionaires, retaining for themselves only enough for a bare living, is past belief. The day the United States finishes paying off the debt and reduces her customs taxes, look out for a big annexation boom.—/umalion Tymes.A PRINCIPLE.It is time to protest against the usurpation by the heads of party governments of a power of dissolving Parlia-~ ment whenever 1t suits their convenience, and for the purpose of snapping a verdict.Such a practice, besides the turmoil and expense of frequent elections, would be subversive of the independence of Parliament, the members of which would hold their seats, not for the term for which the people in the exercise of its legal power has elected them, but during the pleasure of the Prime Minister. When to this usurped power of dissolution are au-ed those of gerrymandering and of passing such measures as the Franchise Act, together with a great command of patronage and government appropriations, there is no saying to what extent an unscrupulous minister might entrench himself in power.Dissolution is the prerogative of the Crown, to be exercised for the purpose of providing the Sovereign with advisers who have the confidence of the people. In England we do not believe that the Sovereign would consent to a purely tactical dissolution.—7he Bystander.SQUIBS.—A writer says that whipping a boy may make him stupld.Perhaps that istrue; but we think it is more likely rooms of the Teutonia Glee Clab, 2904 St.Catherine street, have for the present been transformed into a fairyland. The occasion is a German Fair, the proceeds of which are to he applied towards the procuring of a professional conductor for the club. The rooms have been very tastefully decorated for tbe fair. There is a profusion of bunting which gives the place a warm and pleasing appearance, no pains having been spared to make the place attractive and in this the originators have succeeded.l'here are several tables heavily laden with goods, useful and ornamental, and arranged in such & manner as to attract the eye‘of the visitor. The attendance was large last evening and the receipts were very gratifying. The sales ladies displayed a ghod deal of enterprise.During the evening the glee club rendered several choruses in an acceptable manner.Mr.Bluth delighted the gathering with some very clever illusions. The fair will remain open this afternoon and to-morrow, when the ladies will be very much pleased to see their friends to assist them in the work they have in view. The ladies in charge of the fair are Mrs.F.Briegel, Mrs.Chas.Byrd, Mrs.G.H.Drechsel, Mrs.Chas.Ludwig, Mrs.Theo.Messmer, Mrs.E.Von Rappard and Mrs.J.Siegel, assisted by a large number of young ladies.ee FREIGHT AGERTS IN SESSION.Bat They Are Apparently Sworm to Seereey Like the Equal Rights Association. The regular quarterly meeting of the Canadian Freight Agents’ Association was held at the Windsor yesterday. The president, Mr.Tandy, having died recently, the chair was occupied by Mr.George W.Bosworth, the first vice-presi- dent, with Mr.A.H.Harris as secretary.Mr.J.Earle, the second vice-president, was also present. They spent all day classifying 1reight, altering rates, etc.and dined together in the evening.Just what they did do, however, they po: litely declined to explain, and would of the not even enlighten the reporter as to whether they had raised the rates all round, as had heen whispered, but contented themselves with remarks that were delightfully vague.Among those who were present, besides those mentioned in yesterday’s HEeraLD, were Mr.George P.Reeves, Traffic Manager of the Chicago ard @rand Trunk Railway, of Chicago ; Mr.W.J.Spicer, General Manager, and Mr.E.W.Meaddough, solicitor of the C, & G.T., Detroit ; Messrs.G.M.Bosworth and Cronin case this morning drew a great erowd, and Judge McConnell’s court room was pauxed to the doors. Many men of prominence and ladies of social distinction were present. The eloguent Irish advouvate began his speech to the jury by congratulating them and himself on the near approach of tle close of the trial. All possible safeguards, he said, had been thrown by the law around the rights of the men accused of the crime.Hearsay testimony had been excluded and tue strictest rules had been laid down defining the limits of evidence which might be adduced againsta man.All this had been dons in order that it might not be possible that “a man might be accused and tried behind his back.Killed first and tried afterwards.” As the attorney uttered this sentence in impaseioned tones he extended his hand toward the men on trial. The inference he apparently wished to draw was that this method of procedure forbidden by law was precisely the course followed by the men who first killed Dr.Cronin and accused and tried him afterward.“The defence in this case has been very much narrowed since the 4th of May “said Mr.Hynes.” On that date Dr.Cronin was taken from his home and murdered. On the 5th his friends becoming anxious avowed that he had been murdered. On the 6th and 8th the facts were published to the community. Then the work of altempting to destroy the character of the dead man was begun.Despatches were received from numerous points that he was alive and well, and that he had been seen on the 8th.John A.Beggs said he knew Dr.Cronin was all right and would turn up ; that he was in the inner circle and knew what he was talking about. It was denied by all the dupes of the triangle that Dr.Cronin was dead.He was alive and was all right, they said.” Continuing, Mr.Hynes said, “ There is no doubt but that the plan of the triangle which miscarried was to have taken the clothes of the dead man to England, where they would be found, and then the triangle could point this out to their dupes and say, ‘Ha, he was a British spy and went to England to testify against Mr.Parnell in the London Times case” .Even at the beginning of this trial, said Mr.Hynes, the defence actually contested the identification of the body. That has been abandoned of course since the discovery of the clothes and the instruments. But Judge Wing asked: Is it established beyond a reasonable doubt that Dr.Cronin died from blows on the head, as charged in the indictment ?This is really a confession weakness.‘The alibi of O'Sullivan engaged the attention of the attorney to a considerable length. The testimony that created the alibi was sifed until, but very littls remained. The absurdity of tue story told by the Hylands about their being in Niemars saloon on May 5th with the iceman w«8 held prominently to view by ciling the evidence of Niemar and Anderson, who swore that the saloun was full of revellers, whereas, accordivy ty the Hylands, it was empty.he 16 holding of an opening in saloon on that day supported the absurdity. Moreover, one of the men who Nemann —swcre cae to his place on Saturday night, May 4th, and the constancy of their .association, it was held, was suflicient , argument that as Kunze was so much at { bome cupation for women, in which she held that women were better qualified than men for views were ; presented. The failure of Coughlin to bring Smith into the station when he found him was argued with telling effect, as was also his erroneous description of Smith, the driver of the White horse. To suspect Bourke's alibi Attorney Hynes next gave his attention and after commenting on the contradictory nature of Matt Danaby’s evidence, he referred to the pitiable impression made by the witness who had secretary; Dr.C.C.Miller, Marengo, Ills.attempted to refute the story treasurer.of the hack driver, Swanson, by declar- — - ing that he was drank. The motive of A Greatly that secret committee come forward to tell for whatit was appointed ?The correspondence between Beggs and District Officer Spellman was read and iuterpreted, Beggs in it referring to Cronin reading tbe report, had bemoaned the re-opening of old sores and had declared that something must be done to stop 1t.To this the district officer replied that he could not do anything, and on the day the senior guardian received that letter, a man by the name of J.B.Simmons rented the flat at 117 Clark street and purchased the furniture at Revels. On that day the movement of the clothes from the body was dvtermined uion, for the satchel in which to place the clothes was bought. It was determined that the body must not be found here.It would not do to let it be knowu that the murder was committed in this country. That would have been an acknowledgement ot the truth of Dr.Cronin’s charge against the Triangle, and this was not desired, because the executive wanted to continue to prey on New Little Mam Cuts a Quecr Figure With Clothes a Foot teo Big for Him.An amusing incident occurred at a leading hotel the other day.A gentleman who measured very little over five feet in height and thin in proportion, came down from the West and deposited between $700 and $800 in the hotel safe.He said he had coms to have a good time and he apparently had it for he drew daily upon his capital. He ordered à suit of clothes from a fashionable tailor who happened to be also making a suit for another gentleman in the same hotel, a man of about six feet in height and half that in breadth. Both suits were sent at the same time, and by some mistake were both sent to the short gentleman’s room.As luck would have it he opened the parcel belonging to the tall man, and, being in a jovial mood, felt inclined to overlook the tailor's little mistake. He rolled up the pauts at the foot, got into the coat and walked out with the sleeves hanging down four inches beyond the tips of his fingers, and in this strange plight he went out for a walk.Meantime the other gentleman wished to leave for home, and his clothes not having arrived, he complained to the tailor, who went tothe hotel and discovered the mistake.A detective was engaged to find the man who had carried off the clothes and in an hours time he was found, the centre of an admiring circle of friends. The mistake was explained What a world of meaning in the word ! To dreaming boy or girl what visions arise at its mention! Do you remember your first visit to a theatre? What dreams you had had of it! What if it was a disappointment, was it not also a surprise a delight? The shifting seenery, the gorgeous costumes, the flashing pears, the glittering foot-lighis, the ever- varying action and passion, how they dazzled and enchanted you'! Though you knew the gold was but tinsel and the diamonds paste, yet the illusion was complete. Our age is essentially undramatic— and the stage has still a prominent place in our amusements. What must have been its affect on the boy Shak- speare, when it was the only amuse- went—when life had little variety, aud the newspaper, the lecture, and the opera were unknown ?The players were the decisive influence that, in time, led Shakepeare from bis native home to London to try his fortune. That they came often to Strats ford we are certain; and what more natu- rai than that the son of so influential à wan would be often permitted to be behind the scenes where his boyish enthusiasm would thus early gain him instruction in the widely represented art ?His whole nature was precocious.Married at eighteen to a woman eigut vears bis senior, he was the father of three children at twenty-one.We attach little importance to the story of his marriage. There is no substantial evidence that it was in any way unusual. The disparitv of ages was necessary to his precocious maturity. He could have tound little attraction in.a younyer and less mature nature. That he Was the dupe of an arttul woman is an idea utterly repulsive. She is described in the marriage bond a3 Anne Hathaway, in tue uiocese of Worcester, maiden.Tneve is a quaint and amusing poem, supposed to be addressed to his wife by Shakespeare (possibly before marriage), each stanza of which ends with the refrain, Anne Hathaway. His supposed courting-cbair was purchased by Samuel Ireland at the Strat- tord Jabilee. How poetic and romantic must have been the conrtship of him who conceived the delicious love-scenes of the Merchant of Venice, the Tempest, and Romeo and Juliet, how delicate and chivalric the sentiment of one who held woman so highly and could siog so purely and nobly.Doubtloss his marriage was a happy one.Tradition describes his wife as cimivently beautiful, and of her goodness of beart there is abundant testimuny. The story of Shakespeare’s indifference to bis wife is founded on an inserted clause in his will, in which he gives her only his best Led.But Knight has shown that it was because by tue com- won aw in England she was already weil provided for, and not as Malone says, because Le had furzotten her.The poetry of Shakespeare does not evidence a disappointed and embittered n.arriage.Wherever the dramatic cast does not demand it (as in Hamlet) and we can perceive his natural sent:ment, ti:ere is no cynicism of the Byronic kind. That it may not have been fulfilled to him all his rosy-hued ideals or supplied the complete auswer to his hopes is pos- sible—that its tenor was not always even is probable—but that the woman to whom be returned in the prime of life, with: tl:e laurels of bis young fame fresh upon his brow, and with whom he passed the last years of his life tranquilly and peacefvlly, failed to awaken for him the attractions of home and a husband's affection is too absurd a supposition for serious consideration.; He may have been wayward in his fidelity—and there are stories of a dark- eyed beauty in London (to whom some of his sonnets way have been addressed) — but afterwards when reason bas sobered his passion— when age bad brought its wisdom, Shakspeare won by his conduct the praise of model husband, father, and son.“Let not the socialist, then, class his among the unhappy marriages.- eee The New Word Eupepsia is derived from the Greek, and means a condition of perfect digestion. This condition is always at tained by those who use Burdock Blood Bitters, the only guaranteed medicine for all forms of dyspepsia, coustipation, bilinusness, rheumatiem, scrofula and all blood diseases.! THE MARAGEMENT OF PETROLEUX | LAMPS8.| In view of the numerous fatal and other sccidents caused by petroleum lamps, the following suggestions as to the construction and management of lamps have heen made by Sir Frederick Abel and Mr.Boverton Redwood, chemist of the Petroleum Association, after in- | vestigating the causes of lamp accidents.1.That portion of the wick which is in the oil reservoir should be enclosed in a tube of thin sheet metal, open at the bottom, or in a cylinder of fine wire gauze, such as is used in miners’ safety lamps (twenty-eight meshes to an inch}: 2.The oil reservoir should be metal rather than of china or glass.3.The oil reservoir should have no feeding-place nor opening other than the opening into which the upper part of the lamp is screwed.4.Every lamp should have a proper extinguishing apparatus.5.Every lamp should have a broad and heavy base.6.Wick should be soft and not tightly plaited.| 7.Wick should be dried at the fire before being put into lamp.8.Wick should be only just long enough to reach the bottom of the oil reservoir.9.Wick should be so wide that they quite fll] the wick holder without having to be squeezed into it.10.Wick should he soaked with oil before being lit.11.The reservoir should be quite filled with oil every time before using the lamp, 12, The lamp should be kept thoroughly clean, all oil should be carefully wiped off, and all charred wick and dirt removed before lighting.13.When the lamp is lit the wick should be at first turned down, and then slowly raised.lows: The wick should be turned dow" until there is only a small, flickering flame, and a sharp puff of breath should be sent across the top of the chimney, but not down it.15.Cans or bottles used for oil should ve free from water and dirt, and should be kept thoroughly closed.——- TAKE CARE of your health.Use pure articles in preparing your food.Imperial Cream ‘Tarter Baking Powder contains no im- puritios or adulterants. All grocers sell it ErPs’s Cocoa.—GRATEFUL AND COMFORT- (xG—"“By a thorongh knowledge of the natural laws which govern the operations of digestion and nutrition, and by à careful application of the fine properties of well-selected Cocoa, Mr.Epps has provided our breakfast tables with a delicately flavoured beverage which may save us many heavy doctors’ bills. It is by the judicious use of such articles of diet that a constitution may be gradually built up until strong enough to re- gist every tendency to disease.Hundreds of subtle maladies are floating around us ready to attack wherever there is a weak print. We may escape many a fatal shalt by keeping ourselves well foriifid with pure blood and a properly uourished frame.” Civil Service Gazette.—Made simply with boiling water or wilk.Sold only in packets, by grocers labelled—*Jayves Eres & Co.Homœo- pathic Chemists, London, Eng.National Colonization Lottery, Under the Patronage of the REV.FATHER LABELLE.E~tablished in 1884, under the Act of Que- hee, 32 Vic, Chap.36, for the benefit of the vince of Quebec, CLASS D.The 25th Monthly Drawing will take piace WEDNESDAY, DEC.18th, (889, AT TWO O'CLOCK P.M.Prizes Vaiue, - - $50,000 Capital Prize, worth 5,000 TICKETS, $1.00.Winners’ names not published unless sp.- ~ially anthorized.Drawings on tie third Wednesday of every month.3.Bl.LEFEBVRE, Secretary, Offices, 19 St.James strect, ly 184 Montreal, Can.TILE BLONOCTON Sugar Reining Company LIMITED) FN Lu PLARNIS S0OEN MeKKNZiN, President, Secretary.ve Y HARRIS, Treasurer.MONCTON, N.B.Sacupies Ai 54 St, Francois Xavier St166L DAVID MITCHELI.JAMES M.NITOHELL RAILWAYS.Shortest Route to NEW YORK — AND TO — Saratoga, Troy, Albany, Bos- | ton, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, ANDALL POINTS SOUTH AND EAST Quick Time.No Delays, TRAINS LEAVE MONTREAL 7,30 a.m.—Da:!5, except Sunday, arriving in New York at 8.50 p.m.Buffet Drawing- room car, Montreal to New York.430 p.m.—Night Express, Sunauys include —Wasner's iegant Bleeping ‘Cars rrr through to New York wiihoni change, a.« rivingin Now York at 7.00 next morning, This Train makes close connection at Troy and Albany with Sleeping Car Train for Boston, arriving at 8.30 a.m.New York Through Maiis and Express cars ried via this line.Information ce and Ticke:s sold at Windsor and Balmo:al Hotels, ali Grang Trank Otfices.and at the Company’s Uffice, 143 8¢t.James Street, Montreal.J.W.BURDICK.W.H.HENRY, General Pass.Agt.Agent, Alba Montre: , 14.Lamps which have no extinguisb- | Ing apparatus should be put out as fol- | FRIDAY Diocesan Societies of Colonization oy the Pro- ; Falls aud Fitchburg.: *Parler and Sleeping Cars On !
