NEW YORK CENTRAL TRAIN, A Trackman While Giving Warning is De- Hberately Shot Down—The Engineer's Quick Pull-up Saves Many Lives—Terri- fled Passengers—A Scientifically Prepared Obstacle, ALBANY, N.Y., Sept.8.—The six o'clock irain out of New York, due here at 9.50tonight, was 3) minutes late and as this train 18 usually on time it looked suspicious.itis in- timaled that a blockade intended to wreck the train was discovered by a track walker at New Hamburg and the train was flagged just in time to prevent a serious accident.General Passenger A gent ‘Wolfe says that no word has been sent to him of any such occurrence, but admits that the train was quite late and without any known cause. The United Press reportet could not find any passengers who came upon the train. The blockade, it is said, consisted of stcel rails and scme old railroad iron.Di Vision Superintendent Bissell was not at his office, but his assistant said that no word of the attempted wreck had been received, A Passenger’s Account.LATER.—At 11.20 o'clock a passenger at the depot was found who had talked with the irainman on the belated train. His story was highly sensational and was to the effect that at a point called Old Troy, near New Hamburg, the train was stopped so quickly that Raseengers were thrown from their seats, here was great excitement, the people on the train believing that there was another acecldent. The cause, however, was the appearance of a trackman with ared lantern and with blood streaming from a wound in his shoulder, The engincer said he heard several shots fired and then saw the man. When the trackman could speak he sald that there was an obstruction on the track, and a search party soon found a pile of ties laid across and braced from behind with pieces of railroad iron. The obstruction was removed and the train proceeded with a lot ofthoroughly irightened passengers. The above story was shown to railroad officials here, but they refuscd to say whether it was true or not.A Trainman’s Version.A railroad employee, who was on the train, was found at midnight and tells another version, probably the true one.He says that two men out rowing on the river near that point saw rome men busy on the tracks, and waiting until they disappeared they crawled quietly up.They found a steel rail wedged in the cattle-guard in the same way as at Albany, braced up in the same way by pieces of flange-iron.With all their strength hey could not move it aud staried down the track to warn the Chicago limited express, They met a trackman and he swinging his red lantern started to sto] the train. In an instant severa shots rang Zout aud one took effect in the trackman’s shoulder. However, the train was siopped about 100 yards south of the obstruction.According to the description of the barricade it was of the same build as the one near Albany, on Thursday night.=—————-——>———____ A Difference of Opinion Regarding the Naming of Streets —The Paying of Private Lanes Discussed—Prince Arthur vs, Bagg. The Mayor presided at the meeting of the City Council yesterday. There were also present Aldermen Gauthier, La- marche, Shorey, J.M.Dufresne, J.B.R.Dufresne, Tansey, Grenier, Cunningham, McBride, Farrell, Germain, P.Dubuc, Savignac, P.Kennedy, Martineaa, Brunet, Wilson, Robert, Hurteau, Griffin, Perreault, A.Dubuc, Villeneuve, Stephens, Hamelin, Thomson, Malone, Con- roy, Stevenson, Jeannotte, Prefontaine and Rolland. The several reports of the Roads and Finance Committees regarding drains, etc, were passed. Some discussion was raised om the subject of certain sidewalks on Ontario- street. These had been permitted fps pat down without the consent of the councii baving been obtained, and the chairman of the Roads Committee, Ald.Prefontaire, was censured for the irregularity.Ald.Stephens protested against the proceeding. The principle was all wrong. If isclated proprietors chose to make improvements on their own motion they should be made to bear the whole cost themselves. The Mayor hoped that the report would be passed, on Ald.Prefontaine giving a promise that such an irregularity would not be allowed to recur.Ald.Prefontsine gave the required guarantee, and the report was passed.Ald.Stephens moved that in future proprietors be obliged to pay the whole expense if any improvements are made without the sanction of the council.Ald.Rolland moved, and Ald.Wilson seconded the motion, that the Mayor be authorized to present an address to Prince George this evening in the City Hall.Carried unanimously. The appointment of a successor to the late Sub-Chief McCulloch was brought up by a report from the Fire Committee suggesting three names for the vacancy, Capts.Beckingham, Johnston and No- an, It was moved by Ald.Stevenson, and seconded by Ald.Dufresne, that Capt.J.Backingham be appointed to fill the vacant position.Ald.Grenier moved in amendment, seconded by Ald.Germain, tnat Theodore St.Pierre be given the position. On a division the motion waz lost by 27 to 2.Captain Beckingham was then unanimously appointed to the position. The report of the Road Committee recommending that the name of Bagg and Courville-streets be changed to that of Prince Arthur-street was then brought up.Ald.Griffin proposed an amendment, seconded by Ald.Villeneuve, that Cour- ville, Bagg and Prince Arthar-streets be all called Bagg-street.All, Griffin said that if the names were changed as suggested the Bagg estate would sue the city for damages.A second amendment was proposed by Ald.Jeannotte, and seconded by Ald.McBride, asking that the question ba referred back to the Road Committee for further information, Ald.Stephens in opposing the amendments alluded to tha statement that had been made up to the effect that the Bagg estate had given property to the city, He woald like to know where that property was. There was something in a name; often there was a good deal.Prince Arthur was certainly a more preferablename than that of Bagg.He believed that the change suggested by the Road Committee would have the effect of increasing the value of the strects named. The amendments were defeated by Jarge majorities, and thc report of the Road Committee was adopted. The next business was the reading of the by-law to provide for the pavement of private lanes.Ald.Jeannette said that before proceeding with the lanes, it would be much better to pave the sidewalks; it would be as well to pave the yards, if the lanes were done, and he moved a six months’ hoist.Ald.Stephens was in favor of the by- Jaw, and maintained that the paving of the lanes was necessary ; it was the only means of keeping them clean, and showed visitors the improvement to the city.Ald.Prefontaine, Ald.Shorey,Ald.Da- mers, Ald.Wilson and Ald.Stevenson also spoke in favor of the paving of lanes and Ald.Jeannotte suspanded his motion.Section first was amended to read, on motion of Ald Prefontaine, that any person, being the owner of property bounded by a private lane, may petition the said council that the lane may Le paved with stone or asphalt or any kind as asked for, and this may be decided by the majority of ownera and according to the value of property.Section second which reads: ¢ If such petition be approved of by a resolution of the council, the Road Committee shall cause the necessary work to be executed under the supervision of the City Surveyor,” was amended, by a motion of Ald Wilson, by adding “and that the grade , be determined by the City Surveyor.” The third section also passed.Ald.Stephens moved, seconded by Ald.Stevenson, that the third reading of the by-law be dispensed with.Ald.Jeannotte moved in amendment, seconded by Ald.Dubuc, that the City Attorney be asked his opinion as to whether this could be dispensed with legally. When the vote was taken it Was found that there was no quorum and the meeting adjourned.Smeke Noisy Boys 1890 Cigars, Smoke the Sohmer Cigar,lvc.——- Four Years in Sawyerville.“For four years I had pimples and sores breaking ont on my hands and face, at Bermuda they have had no parades, owing to the fact that they have no ciothing to appear on parade in.The uniform worn in England is not suitable for a warm climate, consequently the regimental tailors have becn busy fitting the new clothes that the guards will wear during their stay here. The new uniform consists of a light scarlet tunic, with royal blue facings, blue pantaloons with red sirive, and white helmet with pugaree and grenade in front.Yesterday Licut.-Gen.Newdigate, who is about to go to England on a short leave, ordere a parade for inspection at 7a.n.There was no hanging back or locking barrack-rooms to escape this parade, but the regiment was out in full force and presented a magnificent appearance, After the General had inspected the regiment and it was put threugh a short drill, the men formed a square and were addressed: by Gen.Newdigate and congratulaied on their fine appearance and soldierly bearing. The General said that it gave him great pleasure to have the honor of inspecting the first and most distinguished regiment of Her Majesty's household troops, The troops then formed in line and marched back to barracks, headed by their drum, fifeand bugle corps, playing “The British Grenadiers.” It 1s rumored in military circles that the order for the second battalion of the Liver- ol Regiment to proceed to B:rmuds to re- teve the Leicestershire Regiment, now stationed here, has been cancelled, and that a reserve batialion of guards will bo called up and sent out instead.During the absence of Gov.Newdegate- Newdigate the Herald: Some time ago I wrote to you criticizing the management of the Fraser Institute and especially speakinz of the shame that so fine an institution should be practically useless tothe working portion of the community, because books were not lent out.You thea appended to my letter an editorial note ridiculing the idea of lending valuable works to all comers and ina jocular manner hinting that few would ever find their way back to the library shelves May I bring to your notice the enclosed clipping ?“The librarian of Darlington Public Library reports in his latest return that not how good management, has benefited that town.Contrast the above with what the handeomely endowed Fraser Institute has done for Montreal in the last five years and then confess that either the in the West for the one mile walk and | AMUSEMENTS OF THE DAY.Margaret Mather at the Academy.—Held by the Enemy. The presentation of Tobin's comedy » The Honeymoon” is not a comm i o¢= currence now-a-days,for high comedy hes given place to comedy which in one sense is sometimes very low indesd. The public taste runs in cycles and the box office is the autocrat that governs an artist’s repertoire. The doings of our ancestors were voted a bore and the world desired to know what men did in the evening dress of the Victorian era. Moreover * The Honeymoon ” ig written in blank verse and except in the case of Shakespeare modern audiences are 1m- patient of hexameters. And yet when fairly well represented“The Honeymoon” seldom fails to plepse. The part of Jul- lana is a favorite one with what are called “leading ladies,” for though it 18 by no means on a par with that of Katherine the Shrew, which, it is said, suggested the play to Tobin, it admits of good and showy work.If an actress cannot reach her audience in Juliana she will probably do well to eschew other high comedy roles. But the best Juliana depends on her husband, the Duke Aranza, and every leading man thinks, someiimes erroneou sly, that he can shine in this part. The elder Wallack, his son Lester Wallack, his nephew James, the anfortunate Gustavus Brooke and a few more of that calibre made the Duke such a fascinating role, and withal one apparently so easy of graceful 1eresen- tation that every actor of note feels that he too can be a Duke for men to talk about.Until therefore the invasion of farcial comedy rout:d everything before it] “The Honeymoon” had its periodical representation. It is full of good parts and good situations, and if Aranza and Juliana suggest Petruchio and Katherine, the story and adventure of Zamora 13call Viola and her love, the Doctor the starved apothecary of Romeo and Juliet, and other pessages of the great dramatist find tributes to their excellence in Tobin's lines. The general result is a pleasing comedy the merit of which is proved by the long life it has enjoyed. The following is the cast of last night's performance : Margaret Mather Cveses Otis Skinner Henry E Walton Julians.ceerveeisscessnes Duke Aranza.Captain Rolando .Signor Balthazar.i Count Mountalban.….….Howard Kyle Jacques, Pro of } sseunuee May Gordon Volante, Baithazar $.Maida Craigen Miss Mather’s conception of Juliana differs in some resçects from that of many of her predecessors. Her irritation at the deception practiced upon her ig sufficiently evident, but on discovering the cheat her bearing is rather that of a woman crciged in some passing whim than of one who feels the indignity that has been put upon her as, keenly rs the loss of expected grandeur. And her methods of showing ber anger and irritation are not always thcse thata gentlewoman of her position might be expacted to exhibit, even when grievously provoked.Mr.Otis Skinner is a fairly good Duke Aranza, at times very good and at other times rougher in bis tone and exercise of authority than is quite consistent with the love he bears to his wife and the mauner of a prince even though disguised as a peasant.Nevertheless the p>tformance was & good one and seemed to delight the large an- dience that had asssmbled to see 1f.The piece was played in its entirety, the scenes with the doctor and Signor Balthazar, which are sometimes cut, havirg been on this occasion retained. The Mock Duke, who provides much of the broader laughter-making elemen., was well played on the conventional lines aud both the mischief-lovivg Volante and the gentle Zamora found excellent representatives.Rolands, the woman- ha'>r, who is an impcrtant personege in tre play, found a spiritad interpreter in Mr.Malone, and the performance generally went smoothly and well. The principal performers were called before the curtain on several occasiors.Held By The Enemy.ThLe announcement that the thrilling American military melodrama * Held by the Enemy” was to be produced at the Theatre Royal had the effect of drawing large audiences to that popular place of amusement ‘both afternoon and evening, yesterday. The play itself is already well known to Mont- realer theatre-gcers, so that it will suffice to say tbat it is one of the most thrilling and unabated interest.Gieat care hes been taken to ensure a faithful scenic production of the piece, and the success achieved by the management in this respect is deserving of all praise. As regards the company itselt all that can be said is that it comprises a list of conscientious workers who manage to give one of the ablest productions of the piece: that have been seen in Montreal for some time. The male portion of the company is particulariy strong, but as much cannot be said of the actresses.Messrs.WaH.Leyden,as Maj.-Gen.Btam- bu:g, W, H.Elwocd, as Col.Chas.Prescott, W.Hudson, as Lieut.Hayne, and W.H, Stuart, as Brig.Surgeon Fielding, were very acceptable, while Mr.C.F.Montaine > occasioned considerah’a amusement as special war corresr nd ent.Miss Anna Vislane, as Susan Creery, Miss Maud Hosford, as R- iia: McCreery and Miss Sara Coleman, ws Euphemia McCraery, at times displayed considerable histrionic ability, although occasionally their voices were scarcely audible to a large portion of the audience. The same piece will be the attraction during the entire week, and those who desire to see a fine play beautifully staged aad ably interpreted should not fail to visit tha Royal during the present week.Strauss’ Concerts. The seats for these concerts on Sept 15 are being rapidly taken, and Nord- heimer’s store was yesterday filled with r3ople secrting
