Titre :
The Montreal witness
Fortement imprégné de sa mission chrétienne et défenseur du libéralisme économique, The Montreal Witness (1845-1938) est demeuré une entreprise familiale durant toute son existence. [...]
The Montreal Witness: Weekly Review and Family Newspaper voit le jour le 5 janvier 1846 à la suite d'un numéro prospectus paru le 15 décembre 1845. Le Witness, comme on se plaît à le nommer, est l'oeuvre du propriétaire, éditeur et fondateur John Dougall, né en 1808. Écossais d'origine, il émigre au Canada en 1826 et se marie en 1840 avec Élizabeth, fille aînée de la célèbre famille Redpath. Ce mariage lui permet sans doute de s'associer financièrement à cette famille et de tisser des liens avec la haute bourgeoisie anglophone de Montréal.

Le parcours littéraire et journalistique de John Dougall est étroitement lié aux mouvements évangéliques puisqu'il a été membre fondateur de la French Canadian Missionary Society, « organisme opposé aux catholiques et voué à évangéliser et convertir les Canadiens français au protestantisme » (DbC).

La fougue religieuse de l'éditeur a provoqué une réplique de la communauté anglophone catholique. C'est ce qui explique la naissance du journal True Witness and Catholic Chronicle en 1850. Le Witness suscite tellement de réactions que Mgr Ignace Bourget en interdira la lecture aux catholiques en 1875.

The Montreal Witness est demeuré tout au long de son existence une entreprise familiale. John Dougall, propriétaire et éditeur depuis 1845, cède l'entreprise à son fils aîné John Redpath Dougall en 1870 qui, à son tour, passe le flambeau à Frederick E. Dougall en 1934. Ce dernier sera propriétaire et éditeur jusqu'à la disparition du journal en 1938.

The Montreal Witness a connu différentes éditions (hebdomadaire, bihebdomadaire, trihebdomadaire) et plusieurs noms. Outre son appellation initiale, il paraît sous Montreal Weekly Witness: Commercial Review and Family Newspaper, Montreal Weekly Witness, Montreal Weekly Witness and Canadian Homestead, Montreal Witness and Canadian Homestead, Witness and Canadian Homestead ainsi que Witness.

En 1938, à la veille de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, les conditions économiques sont désastreuses et le nombre des abonnements diminue constamment. Malgré de vibrants appels aux lecteurs pour soutenir le journal, celui-ci doit cesser de paraître par manque de financement. Le dernier numéro, paru en mai 1938, comporte de nombreuses lettres d'appui et de remerciements. Ainsi se termine une aventure journalistique qui aura duré 93 années.

honored and respected by & large class of the community in which you lived, and, I have no doubt, beloved by your associates; you, with moet important trusts devolved upon you, and with every opportunity, by a faithful discharge of your duty,, to wia the honor and respect of the whole community, saw fit to abuse and pervert the powers with which you were clothed, in à manuer more infamons and more outrageous than ever shown in any instance of like character which the history of #t e civilia:d world disctoros.Indlesd of pre.tecting the public you plundered it.Instead of standing guerd where the law placed you, over the treasury of your county, you threw it Open=not merely to your Own rapscity, but to the avarice of your assoclates under circumstances which make {t transparent that thero was a concerted conspiraey te plaader the treasury of this county in erder to enrich yourself and your associates im crime.The evidence on that subjoct can leave no moral doubt of your guilt, When wo soe in operation the machinery of sb Inventive genius and observe that at each revolution a fixed quantity of some mentlac- tured article is turnud out, we argue from that sesult that it is the work of n miod in which thought and reflection have developed them- solves in that particular form.And when we sce the machinery through which you operated producing a similar result, always aliko in form, it ls impossible Lot to se that behind its operations lay a concerted conspiracy by which you, in common with the others who shared the pluader, were able to reap the fruits of grave and awful crimes.It de in valn to suggest that your trial and conviction Lave been the result of any partl- san feeling, or that the effort to briag you to justice bas been à etrogglo—as one sommoncd «s a jaror said—betwoen ‘the ins” and «“ the outs.” No, the whole contest has been a struggle between honesty and fraud, between virtues and crime.While it istrue thet one great and powerful leading paper in this city, belonging to a particular party, was tho first to dray to light and bold up to the public eye these infamous fraude, yet it is equally true that prominent and bonorable men of all parties united to investigate and develop their true character.It would be wrong, it would be unjast to ea- tertain for one momont the idea that your comviction bas been tha result of persecution at the bands of any persou or any party.It bas been the result of the nacertalnment of the truth and of tbe production of evidence so clear and plain that never ip iny experience or in my reading have I seen a case where the Proof was re utterly overwhelming, or where it wes s0 impoesitle for the jury to fail to ses the truth, Through the wholo of this tris] until your conviction you have remained asca’m and serene as if you relled upon innocence for an acquittal, while it was over- whe imiogly apparent that your serenity was only sudacity—an audacious confidence in the ombipotetce of corruption rather than reliance upon integiity snd funocence.It ls the duty o! the Court to pionounce upon you a sentence that may be in som: degree adequate to your crimes.Jadge Davisthen delivered the 51 senitances, beginning with the fourth count, and seatenc- ing tbe prisoner for the term of 12 years’ imprisonment and e total fine of $12,750.18, The varied emotions of Tweed during the delivery of the long sentence could be read in the changes of bis countenance and bis manner, and when the Judge began to prouounce he several tcrms be looked the look of despair, and received each sentence as though it were à lash that cut straight to the heart, TO PRISON.Asscon es (he sentence was tiniehed, T weed mt down, looking bewildared.Deputy Sheriff Judson Jarvis at the same moment came forward and suggested to him to retire into the Sheriff's private room peading the completion of the commitment papers.He obeyed mechanically, and walked away, accompanied by his sons und others.Hers ho remained until midnight, awsiting the formal commitment, and the result of applications he had made through counsel for & stay of proceed- lsgs.The failure of the applications was communicated to Tweed, atthe Bherit’s oftice, about balf-past 10 o'clock, and be turned away bitterly dissppointed, Shortly after, he asked ibe commitment papers were ready, and «I am to be sent to the County Jall; and rogues Insist npon better pay than honest folks, In hie day of power It is sid he sustained no leon than thirty political clube, He spent enough mcuey for cham.Pagne each year to dower & decent familys.“ed most of bis supporters preferred whiskey.When à man rises by hovest means he fin ol every atep bia acquaintance inoronslo tao the lasses marked by the same quali- genius, or culture, or suterprise, ae those by which he bas advanced.Bat wha hs gains bave been accomplished by diskon.et or disreputable practices, a vold ls created sound him by the public coneclence, and he Las no escape from solitude © amoeg lo- or creatures of his own kind.If Tweed Nad lived In power, snd died out of Jail, be could never have been called à happy or suc- Comful map.‘The lesvou of the rise and the All of such as be wus ie that it docs pay to telat thew, and does not pay te imitate them, MONTREAL, TUESDA (NT.Bmer) There is no doubt that the nows that Tweed was actoally iu the Tombs was & great surprise to many thowsands of people, and eapeclally to the class that may be described ag his adherents, The conviction was generally unexpected, the sentence—compre- hensive in its scope, aad unrelenting lu its character—was not lesa #0.But oven thess did not proçare the public mind for the spectacle of the chief of the corruptiontsts actually in priscn * * * .Tho thing we would like our roaders to notice in connection 1s that the machinery for the punishment of criminals has not been changed to accomplish the result that fills everyones with a sense of incredulity, pleased or otherwise.Our laws are the same a8 when Barnard fssuod stays of proceedings by rcleguaph, and the Erie war was waged by volleys writs and counter-writs from all over the State.Our jury system has been somewhat altered, but all the powers which intimes past have been abused fu the interest of malefactors exist still in the hauds of our Judges.It is the men who have been changed.The prosecution of an offence against the people, committed bya plunderor who uses his booty to pay his lawyers’ bills, is etill a slow process, but it is no longer a vain ons.The subsiitntion of and man fn: bad on the Bench has made tho result of a well.founded prosecution as certain 66 anythiog lu law can be.(NV.F.Herald.) At last the portly tate is fallen.The mighty man of mm pal politics is down; surely at the lowest ebb of his forta sounding very legitimately all the dopthe and shoals of dishonor ; an object of pity even to the paltry wretches who but s short timesiacu rejolccd in gathering up the crumbs of his plunder.“It le like the sound of the fall of a mighty oak in the stillness of tho forest” — en occurrence that has its lmpressive side, and in that direction may easily run into mistaken sympathy and pity ; and its worl side, aa it tells well for the public s-use of rectitude that punishment was possible.It isin the constitution of the human mind that the fall of whatever has any attribute of great- nese, and is not altogether horrible, shall be regarded with mingled ¢mottons of surprise, pity and regret.And all these in varying degree will be excited by Tweed's fate.even with persons who can have no possible sympathy with his ciimes; for there was an sttractive eplendor in the magnitoie of bis misdoings, there was a kind of rotten glory about him tbat made him loom ass Seventh ward Rob Roy.la contemplating the unfinished side of that new Court House one canuot bat fancy that the audacious avarice that grasped « million on tbe contrects would, on another field, have divided laurels with Warren Hastings, or belittied tho story of that Roman Varres who lives in Cicerca amber.But they were magnates when they began, and this was only a mender of old chairs.That is the little addition our republican system makes to the universal story of official thoft— an equal chance to become an illustrious rogue is open to all, and the bumblest canuot complain that even this possibility is closed against him.—— GLENGARRY ELECTION.ARITRE OF Noë.D.A.MACDONALD.The nomination took place'et Alexandria on Tuesday morning, when the following gentlemen were nominated : — Hon.D.A.Macdonald, moved by John Stewart, Charles Leclair, James Fraser, Alex.B.Macdonald, Robert McLennan, Robert Bleck wood, David Mo) and sesended ty Willlam Bathurst, Danijel Campbell, O wen Quigley, D McDermott, M.D., A.EB.McCrae, Alexender B.Macdonald, Poter Kennedy.Duncan A.Macdonald, John D.Campbell and William B Stewart, Mr.B, Devlin, of Montreal, by Duncan A, Macdonald and Hobert Wilson.Mr.Archibald McNab, by Jobn Simpson azd Cosmos Kerr.Hon.D.A.Macdonald, ou presesnting him self, was greeted with cheers.He mid he appesred before the electors at the close of the sixteenth year of bis parliamentary career, a8 representative of the county of Glen.garry, previous to which his late brother had represented them for seventeen years.He referred to his recent vislt to Europe, sud said that, baving considered, so far as bis limited opportunity enabled him to do, the different systems of government, he was more than ever convinced that the British constitution was the best In the world, and the one wo should endeavor to perfect ln Canada.Ue then went over the history of the last session, and the Pacific Scandal, and coming down to the accession of the new Goverment sald it had been proclaimed throngh the country that they were aguinst the constinction of the Pacific and Intercolouial Bali ways and the dsep- ening of the canals.He wouid say that he hed once thonght that our canals were spring styles.‘a Tuieh Boots 175 Mari 1H 818 Bugs Thick Boots.12 215 a Kip.da 14 @ 38 i = igi oo is in nis 128 li 58 12: I 1% ao fue un do A ê 0% do Pebbied and Bot Halo se 0m ots per doses ta @ Hw Moose Muomsins du woe L® Raw FURS —There $10 chaRES 0 note tn qu Li tions.v».EY , Black, isrge ping , lack, sual.me su Fes, Bil (6600 f= mea 10 100 88 ime iu Tw eu 1e Ju 108 140 100 130 «med ue a 0 1% Le à 0 ® Lungs.~Trade cot 80 brisk as isst week, Prices uncbarged, sxoept 8 3licht reduction in Lie atoek.Rbipping Cult boards 01500 ver M fr.Sin uit bine Dea AME NW per WE pos Dead cull deals.SWW WW > 1,2, aod 3qual.Pine 3 Fi un de da Spruce 100 @ LW do do do do Hewluek 119 @ 110 45 il tn Epruce Deals #09 per 100 pos Wainy .Ymemmperk te .o ew id.FETE @ oo anne 0 pr.100 pes Fsentiing.Ergo saw pine.A0 per thousan$ Go second quality.2K @ 30 IROX ANU HARDWARE.~The close of nariza:irs tas tended to materially increase the du'nessof se which bas bitberto ailed and be are jous to soil rather (haa winter their toi bewever light they may be.There ia no chanz: note lo prises.s se a 3 BR #55 nN SUD HM 40 BDI AR EER EA Glo Guim ie 13 30 = £28 Bid.E 8 12818 Hoop an .avan À 10515 Soler Plate, rands.o do Co Xd qual do « on Out Nadis 1816 to io de 15820 do #ibto ta Om do tH ely & 12200 | # 1gil a0 in 199 | do NM QUE & 1 8au do 6 10 & mgm de 7 iW do 40 u 80 a IK Mm 4 ug gui @ 3 i$ pox Ew ® 70) 22 0 AE ES à 4 1459 ® 6109 gga iw Wa wusr 13 @ 1% 0e 7148 M 224 whi 5 $ eau 3 1121 WHOLESALE GHOCERY MARKET, MONTREAL, Friday, Nov.1, The carly close of navigation bas deteingé 114 now Giverted 10 the railway © eonsideravle quantity of “don oczars de 1be business, ené wa rary iw.toma tv fcr which would be 7 point of grave moment to to the real parmansnt y.with © aed nd which probably 1s ow.ny rly to na onity.Frioss are sai) de.re Megned steady as sdvanse reportes.TEAR de |9 getting into a healthier gondition, 66 ue domac and auppiy than Mormer:y tonntice.Japans keep Sem st place nf lon te New York cn Tuesd: es AND SYRURE —À steady market, ards fur the better gtades vf « at foret © P À #0od éral of Coffee bas arrived ia the U.0, but the effort to Reez the Market up goniiauss with most Coffers.Current values {a chiof markete ht be ered mr to el apo.Java Bingaacis ne 0 Mie: Marraceibo ils Wo to Me.ratherinore firmly.at $413 to W.¥ Dew, Pis BALLS B70 Dr: Ihe, Currants are No ‘hou the market is su, al mands higher quan: liberte pot pleut: Be tye tor new arop: Welsats from ie npwal Oricks Arm.54 Me 40 040;
