Nick Fonda has recently published another collection of stories about Richmond that he has titled Richmond Now and Then: An Anecdotal History. This is a follow-up to his earlier work Roads to Richmond. It is more like Richmond Today and Yesterday; it is a brief, albeit meandering, history of the people and forces that made Richmond the place it is today. Many of these chapters are based on articles that Fonda has written for newspapers and magazines over the last nearly forty years, so some of them have small appendices to bring them up to date.He has also included several maps showing the region at different points in its history, which are generally very helpful to the reader`s understanding of how the area has changed over the last two centuries.Fonda starts at the very beginning: the last Ice Age which carved out the Saint Francis River watershed and the lakes that feed it.The river was the first means of transportation for bringing settlers in and taking products out.He notes that it brought pioneers from both directions: Americans who came downstream from the New England states looking for cheaper land and Europeans, mostly from the British Isles, who paddled upstream seeking land and refuge from the continent’s succession of wars. There is also a chapter on the Abenaki who occupied the territory briefly after they were forced north by the settlements along the Atlantic seaboard, but who were largely assimilated into the more rapidly expanding settler population.Chapters on events are balanced with chapters on people. The building of Craig’s Road from near Quebec City is next to the chapter on Daniel Thomas, the first notary in the region. The arrival of the railroad is next to the story of Ephrem Brisebois, one of the first members of the Northwest Mounted Police.Fonda also documents some of the major events in the expansion of the town such as the building of the first bridge across the Saint Francis and the effect of floods on local development.Interspersed with the chapters on Richmond Then are chapters about Richmond Now: the increasingly important role being played by women entrepreneurs in the local economy, the creation of a time capsule in 2012, the last of the beaver trappers and the ninety year old woman who won a forest management award. The history of the fluoridation wars is a lesson for all of us who are badgered by crusaders on both sides of an issue of public policy and a warning to be very careful about where your information has come from and who provided it.The chapter that brought back strong memories for me was the one about Gunter’s.My first year in the Townships, a friend of mine suggested we go down to Richmond to visit one of his friends from Montreal who was doing a practice teaching stint at Saint Francis School. His instructions had been, “I get off work at 3:30.Meet me at Gunter’s.It’s right on the main drag. You can’t miss it.” Because it was snowing, we decided it would be prudent to travel by bus.The bus dropped us at the corner of Main and Craig.Noting that there were no buildings toward the south, we headed north.By this time, there were several inches of snow on the ground. We plodded past the Grand Central Hotel, which was a surprise to us, since we had always thought it was in Magog. We marched through the snow for a good half hour, with no sign of Gunter’s anywhere.Eventually we went back to the Saint Jacob’s and waited for 3:30 so we could call our host and find out where Gunter’s was hidden.Fonda explains how it was hiding in plain sight. The one thing that disappointed me about this chapter is that Fonda makes no mention of the 50th anniversary party in 1975 when the Gunter brothers charged 1925 prices for a week. But perhaps he is saving that story for another book.Fonda makes it clear that Richmond has gone downhill in recent years. But it is also clear that he is very fond of the town and the surrounding area.He does an excellent job of bringing the past to life and contrasting it with the present.Even people who know a lot about the Richmond-Cleveland-Melbourne area are bound to learn some things they hadn’t known by reading this most enjoyable book.Richmond Now and Then is available to purchase at the Townshippers’ Association offices at 257 Queen Street in Lennoxville.Vincent diploma (DEP) as well as vocational training (DEP).“This is an example of really excellent collaboration,” said ETSB Chairman Mike Murray, explaining that not all school boards offer the same vocational training programs.“Students from any of those boards can do any program,” Murray said. There are currently 23 vocational programs available among the four boards.Murray said there is already a handful of students enrolled in the 2-4-U program.“Each student’s program is individualized and there is continuous entry. They could start any time,” he said. The general rule is that students spend two days at the high school in which they were enrolled, and three days per week in vocational training at the centre and in the program of their choice. Most programs include an internship, which brings an even more concrete aspect to the program. The vocational training centres work closely with businesses in the region so that students receive training that meets the needs of the industry and have viable employment opportunities quickly after graduation. The collaboration between the four school boards extends to transportation, Murray said, to help get the students to and from their training programs.“It took a lot of initiative,” Murray said, explaining that the idea was launched by leadership in the vocational sector in response to the province wide shortage of skilled and semi-skilled labour. It also responds to the needs of students who are struggling or unhappy in school, or have a passion they would like to pursue outside traditional academic offerings.Murray shared a testimonial he heard from a student in the program who, since the age of five or six, wanted to become a farmer.“His plan never varied. He was so attached to the idea that he couldn’t see the relevance of studying academic subjects,” Murray said, which can often lead to students dropping out.The 2-4-U program helped motivate the student to pursue his passion.“Now, he can see his future as a farmer developing,” Murray said.Concomitance 2-4-U, according to Murray, is a great example of professional educators thinking outside the box, looking for ways to do a better job.“It tailors education to the student rather than trying to fit the student into a preconceived idea of education,” commented Murray.Friday , March 16, 2018 Page 3 "We are extremely proud of our program,” boasts SYRAE president and dairy farmer Maxime Lafond.LOCAL NEWS The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com the illegal purchasing of fish; and possession of fish in quantities greater than the quota.Operation North-South mobilized more than a hundred wildlife officers assisted by the Quebec Wildlife Protection canine squad.Currently, nearly 90 people have been tagged in this operation and more than 120 charges are currently pending. If found guilty, those involved face fines of up to $270,000.Fourteen searches were carried out in the municipalities of Sherbrooke, Magog, and Stanstead and several kilos of filleted perch and a few kilograms of white- tailed deer were seized as well as boats, all-terrain vehicles, fishing tackle, and equipment used to sell these fish.Citizens are encouraged to continue their collaboration with the Ministry by reporting any information related to the investigation arising from this Operation or any action damaging to wildlife or habitats by contacting S.O.S.Poaching at: 1 800 463-2191, or via the Internet at m f f p .g o u v .q c .c a / f a u n e / s o s - braconnage/index.jsp.All information provided will remain confidential.City postpones second-round Wellington South consultation Record Staff SHERBROOKE After the withdrawal of the proposal by the consortium behind the Well Inc project, the City of Sherbrooke has decided postpone the second round of public consultations on the creation of the Wellington South Area Development Master Plan scheduled for late March. These sessions will take place when the City of Sherbrooke has the information necessary to present a clearer version of the master plan that forms part of the Downtown 2020 development strategy. This decision was taken to allow the City to implement a process that will allow for proposals for a new private project that will animate the priority area of development. The master plan must take into consideration the needs of the project that will eventually be submitted to the municipal council. The City says it is therefore too early to solidify the needs for street furniture, active transportation, and street traffic. These issues have already been the subject of consultations in the past year but will be presented again and discussed with the people of Sherbrooke later. In the meantime, people interested in the Wellington South development can consult the draft master plan at sherbrooke.ca/wellinc.Citizens can also ask questions and share their vision and concerns related to the revitalization of the neighborhood by email at revitaliza- tioncentreville@ville.sherbrooke.qc.ca.The original master plan was developed by the City of Sherbrooke following a public consultation held on July 20, 2017, which was attended by more than 80 people, an on-line survey of the population from July 20 to September 30, and the establishment of an advisory committee bringing together the various stakeholders of the neighborhood. By David Suzuki Many of us in Canada take water for granted, despite drinking water problems in First Nations communities — the subject of a recent column.World Water Day (March 22) reminds us that as the human population continues to grow, putting greater demand on all resources, and as climate change exacerbates drought in many places, we can’t be complacent. Our cities may not be running out of water yet, but people in Cape Town didn’t expect their water supply to go dry.The four-million residents of South Africa’s second-largest city could see their taps turned off by May 11, called “Day Zero” — or sooner, if people don’t obey severe water restrictions.“People didn’t believe anything like this could happen, but I think the reality has dawned on everyone and it is pretty tense,” University of Cape Town hydrologist Piotr Wolski told Smithsonian magazine.Cape Town is entering its fourth year of drought — the worst in 100 years, with an average of 234 millimetres of rainfall a year for the past three years, less than half the average since 1977.Wolski says climate change is a big part of the problem, but so is city mismanagement.Cape Town isn’t the only city with these problems.São Paulo, Bangalore, Beijing, Cairo, Jakarta, Moscow, Istanbul, Mexico City, London, Tokyo and Miami all face water shortages related to climate change, population growth, waste and mismanagement.Depleted supply is only one result. As more water is drawn from underground aquifers, land is sinking, disrupting road and transit infrastructure and building foundations. As water for agriculture becomes increasingly scarce, food prices rise, which can lead to conflict and human migration.Canada has more freshwater per capita than most countries, but not as much as we might think.Although water covers 70 per cent of Earth’s surface, only three per cent is fresh.Canada has about 20 per cent of the world’s freshwater, but only seven per cent of renewable freshwater.(A lot is stored in glaciers, lakes and aquifers that aren’t being replenished, or at least not fast enough to replace usage.) As our agricultural and industrial activity expand and population grows, water demands grow and more sources become polluted.Cape Town introduced a number of measures to combat its crisis.People are restricted to 50 litres of freshwater a day, going down to 25 after Day Zero — although average consumption is still about 95 litres a day.Europeans average 100 litres a day, and Canadians each used about 250 litres a day in 2013, down from 330 in 2005, not including industrial, commercial and other uses.Consumption has been declining as more people install low-flow shower heads, faucets and toilets.Cape Town’s government is also trying to diversify its water supply by drilling for groundwater and building desalinization and water recycling plants, and has imposed higher fees on those who use more than a certain limit. With freshwater shortages looming, it’s wasteful to use drinking water to flush toilets and water lawns.Although recycling or re-using toilet water, or “black water” — about one-third of water use in the average household — is difficult, although not impossible, because of bacterial contamination, grey water from baths, showers, sinks, dishwashers and laundry machines can be treated and used to flush toilets, water plants and gardens, even wash clothes. That can save as much as 70 litres of water a day per person. It also bewilders me that in Canada, where most people can get clean drinking water from the tap, so many pay more for bottled water than gasoline, which creates more plastic and raises issues around corporations profiting from water supplies. One lesson from places like Cape Town is that we should start tackling the issue now rather than waiting until it becomes a crisis. We must get better at conserving water, preventing water pollution and protecting natural ecosystems like forests and wetlands that filter and store water while also preventing flooding.Beyond the obvious ways to conserve household water, we should also rethink our obsession with lawns that need constant watering, and discourage luxuries like private swimming pools. Some say our next major wars could be about water rather than resources like oil.If we in Canada and elsewhere plan properly, that needn’t be the case.David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki The Record Canada has more freshwater per capita than most countries, but not as much as we might think.Response to Bill 173: Guaranteed income for some? The Eastern Townships Social Assistance Coalition (Coalition régionale estrienne de l’aide sociale) has responded to the announcement of Bill 173, "An Act Primarily to Establish a Basic Income for Persons with Severe Employment Constraints" by the Department of Employment and Social Solidarity. To begin with, we recognize that the government has taken steps in the right direction with the introduction of this individualized program that will increase the clearly inadequate income of some people, who are described as "severely disabled".In addition, other gains are important as well: • The checks that will be paid out according to the individual, so as not to penalize (couples) • The right to possess certain assets and to preserve their inheritance • The right to keep more of their employment earnings However, there are certain things that concern us, such as who is covered and the criteria for entitlement, as well as the amounts granted. Why add a new category?Does a person who has severe employment constraints and who applies for social assistance not have the same needs as others who also have a disability and who has been receiving social assistance for the last 66 of 72 months? Why this disparity and discrimination against this same category of social solidarity recipients. In 2016, the market consumer basket measure was $17,760, and this will be the amount announced, which will reach $18,000 in the next five years, Indeed, the bill provides that the amount of basic income will be increased gradually, but the cost of living will also continue to increase, which will negate the beneficial effect of this increase by 2023.This bill, which aims to increase incomes for people who can’t work, clearly shows that the government recognizes that the amounts currently granted are too low to live decently, but it also shows us that there are deserving poor people who are left behind.According to the government, this new measure will ultimately help 84,000 people with severe employment constraints. The goal of helping these people reduce their poverty situation by 2023 is certainly commendable, but what will the government do for the others?GENEVIÈVE BOUCHARD AND MYLÈNE morning.COLUMNIST Friday , March 16, 2018 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Opening to the Spirit Today’s word: Gate By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) How many gates have we passed through in our lives? As a child I had a friend with a backyard that backed onto mine.It seemed magical that we could visit each other by passing through this gate.It was also my first understanding of “my property” and “your property”.The fence marked the border. The gate let us through. In our lives, we need both fences and gates.I remember a class on family systems theory. The professor drew three stick figure families on the board. She then made different types of circles around each one.The first had a solid, thick line. The middle one had a series of thick lines with small spaces in between, much line the broken line on a highway. The last was just a series of dots, spaced far apart. We were talking about boundaries and family secrets. She described how the first image and the last image were unhealthy. The solid line, like an unbroken fence, did not let anyone in or out.Information was kept too tightly controlled.Unhealthy secrets, like abuse, were kept in the family. The series of dots was also unhealthy. This family did not have enough boundaries.Anyone could just wander in and wander out and it would be unclear who the family unit was.Too much information would be shared with others and trust would be broken. The healthy image, with the solid lines and small spaces, reminds me of gates. It is clear where the boundaries are but we can also let people in and out.Information can be shared in healthy ways.Hopefully, we all have fences and we all have gates. We need both.2) Years ago I spent the summer as a student minister in southern Saskatchewan. My home was a trailer on a cattle ranch that had been used before by the hired hand.I had to open and close a cattle gate to park my car at the end of the day.The cattle there were so used to me, it sometimes felt that they were welcoming me home.I also remember a sense of peace as i shut the gate and entered my sanctuary for a quiet evening.I had my stereo but no television.Music was my muse. The gateway was my doorway to the world but also a welcome barrier for the quiet hours. These days there are some people who live their entire lives in the public eye.Every experience, every meal for some, is shared on Facebook for all to see. When the ping of the cellphone goes off, even late in the evening they hop to attention.Others have the television on constantly or constantly check for news.Still others need to surround themselves with people constantly at a local club. The world is never shut off.I remember a friend who found a weekend in the country difficult to take because there was no ambient noise. For me I still like the idea of closing the gate at night, turning on some music, and relaxing with my thoughts. The world will still be there.I can open the gate in the morning.3) Christo and his life partner Jeanne-Claude were social artists who funded their own creations on an astonishing scale.Installations required the involvement of whole communities ~ draping a canyon, miles of white sheets lining a coastline, wrapping prominent buildings. The Gates in New York's Central Park were a brief installation visited by millions.Open for a mere two weeks, their art inspired this poem. The Gates (February 2005, Manhattan), Carole Martignacco Billowing scarves of saffron, a brilliance we visit briefly what were they thinking, Christo and Jeanne-Claude ~ flying flags of citrus?winter in Central Park, grey buildings hedge the rectangular white commons, winding public paths luminous framed thresholds by the thousands draped in contemplative colour snap, whisper in the wind so we who run, jog, stroll bike, skate-board, walk, meander ~ however we pass each other momentarily through these open Gates ~ might be repeatedly awakened 4) I took a walk this summer along a country road on the island of Iona in Scotland.I got to a gate at the beginning of a field with a sign on it.It read “Visitors are allowed to enter. You can follow the path down to the sea.But make sure to close the gate so the sheep don’t get out.” As physical gates serve a multitude of purposes, so do psychological gates that help us navigate human relationships. All of us need a certain number of gates that allow conditional entry into our inner spaces, those places that hold our personal struggles, our highest ideals and our deepest secrets. These places can be shared but only within a climate of trust and safety.Educator and retreat leader Parker Palmer talks about creating safe places for the soul to show up.Healthy gates will open before trusted audiences. The trouble with gates is that they can get rusty and uncooperative with disuse. What, at one time, kept us safe and secure, can become a prison that prevents us from feeling alive. We can go through all of our lives with closed gates due to some past trauma or betrayal. We can develop such complicated locking systems that no one is able to gain entry. But if we want to say we have truly lived during our time here sometimes we have to take the risk, open our own gate and get used to being a little more open.Like a breath of fresh air or a burst of springtime colour, opening our long closed gate can give us a renewed sense of joy and purpose, maybe even a resurrection. As we approach the season of Easter, a time when we reflect on the life, death and resurrection of the Christ, it is a time when we also reflect on what in life endures and what passes away.As one of the world’s greatest teachers Jesus opened his gate wide and taught us a deep and authentic way to live and to love.Though it cost him his life, he showed us the nature of the divinity of which we are created. All this through opening his gate. This springtime if you find that your gate is rusty, maybe it’s time to get out your oil can and take a risk. One word, four voices - now it's your turn to reflect: What images, thoughts or memories does the word "gate" evoke for you?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues By Victoria Ahearn THE CANADIAN PRESS Carling Harris of Ottawa has been dressing up as pop-culture characters at conventions, a worldwide hobby known as “cosplay,” for eight years and has noticed a huge trend lately.“I’m part of a lot of these people-of- colour cosplay groups on Facebook and I noticed even before the movie (‘Black Panther’) came out there was a lot of hype and you saw a lot of people making the new Black Panther cosplay,” says Harris, who dressed up as Black Panther at last September’s Fan Expo Canada in Toronto.“It’s not just Black Panther himself — it’s the Dora Milaje (special forces) and pretty much all the characters.” Indeed, the Marvel Comics superhero story that’s set in the fictional East African nation of Wakanda seems to be sweeping the cosplay world in the wake of the film’s release, with fans sharing photos of themselves or their children dressed as the characters on social media.“There’s definitely been an increase, and even if people aren’t in the outfits, just doing the Wakanda salute, saying ‘Wakanda forever,’ that kind of thing, wearing T-shirts,” says Khadijah Jabari, a Toronto artist/student who’s been cos- playing since 2011.“A lot of people have been showing plans for making different outfits, or they’ve already bought props and stuff like that.Mostly a lot of people of colour, especially, but even some cosplayers who aren’t seem to have found characters they identify with and want to cosplay.” Sanjoy Kundu, owner of Theatrics Plus costume shop in Toronto, says he’s seen “a significant” amount of people requesting the Black Panther costume specifically lately.Meanwhile, organizers of this weekend’s Toronto ComiCon featured an image of Black Panther on one of its flyers and expect to see more of a presence of the character at the convention.“I’m sure we’re going to see it in the merchandise from our retailers,” says Andrew Moyes, vice-president of Fan Expo HQ, which puts on Toronto ComiCon.Lovie Lee, a Windows administrator and comic-book lover in Philadelphia, tried cosplay for the first time at New York Comic Con last October in a Black Panther suit that he and two others made over a period of six months.“When I finally stepped into the crowd in the suit and was walking down the street, I felt like: ‘This is where I’m supposed to be, ’” he says.Kundu says many of his white customers have been reluctant to buy the Black Panther costume, fearing it’s cultural appropriation. But Harris encourages it.“Go for it, as long as they don’t blackface or paint their skin darker to match his skintone.Cosplay is for everyone,” she says.“I, for one, cosplay mostly white characters myself and I don’t change my skintone.(Black Panther) wears a mask most of the time, so just keep that on, take pictures and you’re good.” Jabari says she also dresses up as white characters.“For me at least, cosplay is just a way of showing some form of respect and connection to a character,” she says.“If people who aren’t black can appreciate these characters and identify with them, even if they don’t look exactly like them, I think that shows that these are well-made characters.” Adds Lee: “Really it should just be if you want to cosplay the character, it doesn’t matter who you are — put your heart into it, make your costume and enjoy yourself.” The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com March 16 - CONT’D FROM PAGE 8 Country oppression and control that led to racial and social divides, racism, and “white privilege.” Bainbridge plans to direct and wants to explore the story in an entertaining way, potentially with musicians among the interviewees.“That racism of white being ‘better,’ it’s a foundational thing of North America and white people don’t talk about it and we really have to,” Bainbridge said.“We have to come to the table and be part of the conversation and understand what’s gone down.I want to mark the deliberate parts of it.They didn’t come out of nowhere and I want to figure it out and understand it in a loving way.” The company’s other plans include “a big dramatic series” that’s in development, and a potential show about the Restigouche fishing community of New Brunswick.Such stories had previously been hidden beneath generations of systemic and violent racism and oppression but are now coming to the surface, said Bain- bridge.“While there is a lot of trauma to deal with there, there’s also all this hidden beauty and the jewels of culture that we never got to see as a general culture. Those are what’s coming up, and that’s what ‘Rumble’ is about,” she said.“Native art and native culture, it’s rising above the cultural genocide across the board and people are now rising and expressing and understanding and speaking and decolonizing. All of that and that strength is creating incredible art.” ‘Rumble’ CONT’D FROM PAGE 9 By Lori Ewing THE CANADIAN PRESS Billy Bridges lived through the lean years of Canadian sledge hockey, when the privilege of playing for Canada's national team came with a hefty $15,000 price tag.“Plus we had to pay for our travel and all our own food.We were eating fast food.We had 4 a.m., 5 a.m.ice times, because that's all we could afford, the cheap ice,” Bridges said.Bridges and Tyler McGregor two goals apiece as the Canadians dispatched South Korea 7-0 in Thursday's Par- alympic hockey (formerly sledge hockey) semifinals, booking their first berth in the gold-medal game since they won Paralympic gold in 2006.The world No.1-ranked Americans played Italy in the other semifinal Thursday evening.Canada, which beat the U.S.4-1 for a record fourth world title last year, has yet to be tested in this tournament, running roughshod over opponents 42-0 through four games so far.Bridges credits Hockey Canada, which brought Canadian sledge hockey under its umbrella in 2004, with raising the level of excellence and professionalism in the program.“I'm so lucky that I was a part of the team before Hockey Canada took over, because I got a chance to see what they've done,” said Bridges, a five-time Para- lympian from Summerside, P.E.I.The Canadian players are as well-funded as “any amateur athlete” Bridges said, receiving a monthly stipend _ or carding _ from Sport Canada, money from Own The Podium, plus sponsors.“I can't believe I'm a disabled athlete, basically making a living and playing hockey on the greatest stage and having people watch, and doing interviews,” said Bridges, who was born with spina bifida.“Ten-year-old me would never believe this right now, when I realized I was a disabled person, and that I wasn't going to the NHL.That was always my dream, to go to the NHL and be a big hockey star. And it's something special to be a part of this now.” The Canadians put on a show at Gangneung Hockey Centre, with Liam Hickey, Dom Cozzolino, and Greg Westlake scoring one goal each.Corbin Watson and Dominic Larocque shared time in net, making a save apiece, as the Canadians outshot South Korea 24-2.Canadian coach Ken Babey would like to have seen more parity in a tournament that saw the Americans breeze through the first round, outscoring opponents 28-0.Canada and the U.S.also have the youngest teams, each averaging about 27 years old. There are five players over 50 in the tournament, including 61-year-old Japanese netminder Shinobu Fukushima.“It's kind of like women's hockey in the sense that we have to help grow the game, we have to share our knowledge, share some of our resources, because it's not going to grow unless we do,” he said.“I really think as leaders, Canada and the United States .I think we should continue to do what we do, and maybe do even more.” To that end, Canada hosted South Korea last year in Calgary, plus visited South Korea to play a series of games.“I think (the Koreans) are way better than they were two years ago. They're faster, they're more skilled, they're playing a style now, a system,” said Babey, who coached at SAIT for 27 years before taking over the Para program in 2015.“And we try to get countries like Italy, Sweden, the Czechs coming to Canada if they want. We've extended informal invitations to do that for next year.” The beginning of the next Paralympic quadrennial, he said, would be the perfect time for countries to get on board, since Para hockey has a much shorter learning curve than the standup game.South Korean fans certainly seem to have embraced the game.Thursday's crowd, which included South Korean First Lady Kim Jung-sook, rivalled the attendance for the Canada-U.S.women's final at last month's Olympics.Fans danced and sang along to the blaring K-pop tunes.Ear-splitting screams erupted with every Korean pass or shot that came near the Canadian net.Prompted to cheer loudly during one timeout, the screaming reached a cacophonous 106 decibels _ about the equivalent on the ears of using a power saw.“I couldn't believe how loud it was out there,” said McGregor.“It was almost deafening.” Canada will be gunning for gold on Sunday less than a month after the Canadians wrapped up a disappointing Olympic tournament. The men were eliminated in the semifinals by Germany, while the women lost to their archrival Americans in a shootout.McGregor, a former triple-A hockey player who lost a leg to cancer, said his team would love to bring hockey gold and glory back to Canada.“Absolutely, because the past two Games specifically, in Vancouver and Sochi, our team showed up to the Par- alympics looking to cap off a triple gold, because our men's and women's teams had both left the Games with gold medals,” said the 24-year-old from London, Ont.“It's different this time around. We might be the only (Canadian hockey) team leaving Pyeongchang with a gold medal.Canadians expect that of us, our country takes a lot of pride in being a leading hockey nation and as a team, we want to bring home a gold medal, because I think it would showcase our sport tremendously back home, it would have a huge impact on the growth of our sport. We want solidify our stake as a leading hockey nation.” Canada had to settle for bronze four years ago in Sochi after losing to the U.S.in the semis. The Americans went on to win gold, with the Russians, who were banned from Pyeongchang due to doping infractions, claiming silver.Local Sports Follow a proper training program.Find a program that suits your fitness level.Friday , March 16, 2018 Page 17 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com BromeCounty News while you navigate the machines Iused to dread working out in the gym for a lot of reasons.I had "gymtimi- dation,” the main reason being my physique… as in I would need to live at the gym for a year, yet still not achieve the results I was hoping for.In other words I was not exactly carved out of granite.I remember trying to lift weights with my petite frame next to someone pumping iron without effort.I don’t know how much she was lifting but it looked like a hundred pounds in each hand, which still couldn’t erase her smile never mind bring her to a sweat. This workout experience deflated my confidence, knowing how unlikely it was that I would ever get to her level.I pledged to never go back to the gym or any fitness center, despite my good fitness as a runner.I still had that sense of a negative body image until I started reading articles about the benefits of cross training in the gym for runners.I decided to give the gym one more chance. After my second attempt at the gym while consciously not caring who was beside me, I had a better experience.I learned to slowly enjoy the gym and all it had to offer.I realized that time actually was on my side – that dedication to fitness means different things to different people. So without further adieu, here are my top five tips to conquer gym- timidation: 1.Have a reachable goal as to what you hope to accomplish at the gym.Mine was to work on my strength and core.If you are new to working out or just getting back into shape you may feel intimidated running on the treadmill or lifting weights at the gym, but having a goal will keep you focused and give you a reason to be there.2.Follow a proper training program.Find a program that suits your fitness level.3.Know how to work the machines. It can be intimidating, even overwhelming with the amount of workout equipment available.Using the equipment properly is the key to not getting injured.4.Training with someone will help motivate you, inspire you and keep you on your track.5.Continue working out in the gym as we ease into warmer weather.Doing weights helps with your strength and core and will benefit your running in a big way.Lastly, be patient - don't expect to see results right away as it takes time.Record your workouts to see the progress. When you look back at where you were when you started, you will be amazed and very proud.I still work out in the gym as often as possible, though I prefer running in the natural elements. With colder temperatures, I feel more likely to take my workout indoors, always mindful of my goal.Working out in the gym is one of the best forms of cross training.Once at home again, you may deservedly spoil your tired muscles in an Epsom Salts bath, which might require the most self discipline you have shown all day - because sooner or later… you have to get out.www.runwithit.ca Twitter: @christineruns Instagram:- runwithit_christineblanchette YouTube – runwithit late William and Angie Evans, she is survived by her brother Richard (Marina) of Waterville, and predeceased by her sister, Elaine; and brother, Phillip Wright. She greatly enjoyed her nieces and nephews; Evans: Angela (Graham), Jennifer (late Bruce), Thomas (Luminita), Richard (Jennifer), and Timothy (Dione); Wrights: Janet (Rick), Pamela (late Peter), Daniel (Lynn), Stephen, and Alan.In addition, she enjoyed watching the family grow with 14 great nieces and nephews and even one great grand niece.Through life, she was guided by a profound commitment to her Christian Science faith which she shared with her mother. It gave her health and strength, leading her to overcome life’s many challenges.Ruth was a widely respected lifelong learner and teacher of English. She acquired her education from Lennoxville High School, earning the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for excellence.Following her arts degree from Bishop’s University, she attended the MacDonald College School for teachers earning her teaching certificate.Later she acquired her Master of Arts degree from Breadloaf School of English, in Middlebury, Vermont. She also completed studies at Queen’s University. Not only did Ruth strive for teaching excellence, she poured her energies into educational leadership, serving as Quebec president of the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers during the formative years of the 1960 reforms. She followed with commitments to the Canadian College of Teachers - commitments that eventually added an international involvement.Teaching gave her summers free to travel and through the years she and her sister, Elaine, took many trips through the UK, Europe, and Africa. When not travelling, she could be found gardening, reading, sewing, or quilting; whatever her pursuit, Ruth’s heart never strayed far from her beloved home.Donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to Malvern Cemetery.Cremation arrangements are made by Cass feral, there’s one thing you can do: Check out its ears.Often, when a cat is neutered, a painless procedure is done to its right ear that gives it a small notch or tip. It’s designed to inform the public that this cat has in fact been neutered, is likely not feral and has a home.If a cat does not have a notch, there is a high likelihood it’s a stray.Humanely trapping and bringing the stray cat to a veterinarian to neuter helps control the cat population.DO JUST ONE THING Church Services Anglican Presbyterian Evangelist United United Friday, March 16, 2018 Page 19 The Page 20 Friday , March 16, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2018 Dear Annie: My roommate has an annoying habit.Every time he uses the bathroom, he keeps the water running. We live in a drought-ridden area, and I don’t want to think about the amount of water he wastes each day. We’ve lived together successfully for just over a year now, without any real fights.I don’t want to make a big deal out of this, but I do want him to get the impact of leaving the faucet on.We have separate bathrooms, so the first time I heard the running water was a few months into living together.I casually asked about it, and he said he’s been self-conscious of bathroom noise since he was little.I didn’t want to push it too much because it seemed to be a sensitive issue, but I mentioned the drought and how it might be a waste. He agreed but didn’t change his actions. He pays the water bill, and I pay the cable, so it’s not a matter of money. But I find myself super aware of every time he goes to the bathroom, which is not a habit I want.Annie, I’m not sure how to approach him about this again or how to stop caring so much.Got any advice?— Water Waster Dear Water Waster: You could suggest to your roommate that he buy a fan or a noise machine so he can get the effect of running water without the waste. But at the end of the day, bathroom habits are highly personal, and you can’t control your roommate’s.So the most practical advice here: Be the change you want to see in the environment.Compensate for his overuse of water by reducing your usage.Visit https://wateruseit- wisely.com for some creative ideas on how to do that.Dear Annie: This is in response to “Mom Running in Circles,” whose daughter is in her 20s and constantly goes to her with problems yet seems uninterested in solutions.Years ago, I became a volunteer for a crisis line. Before we picked up a phone to help, we had 60 hours of training by psychologists and other educators so that we could be effective in dealing with our callers.I, being a parent of four children, learned a great deal that stuck with me.One of the major things I learned was to not give out solutions to a problem.Children whose parents are willing to solve their problems for them turn them into adults who rely on others to do the same thing. When children have a math problem that they need to solve, do you give them the answer? No! To be successful in math, they have to learn the process and come up with the answer. When helping adults with problems, we ask, “Have you been in this or a similar situation before? How did you deal with it?Were you successful?” If you solve people’s problems yourself, you weaken them in the long run.If you aid people in solving problems themselves, you help to strengthen them. The daughter of “Mom Running in Circles” doesn’t need therapy; she needs someone to listen and help her to see the solutions that she can come up with.If you want independent children, help them to learn to solve their own problems. It may make you feel good as a parent of children to solve their problems for them, but not so much as a parent of adult children.— Not the Solver Dear Not the Solver: So well-said.Thank you for sharing your insights from parenthood and your time as a volunteer on a crisis hotline.I agree totally.Send your questions for Annie Lane to South starts with one potential loser in each side suit.He has only 10 winners: one spade, five hearts, three diamonds and one club. The best line is to establish dummy’s club suit.Declarer draws trumps ending in hand and runs the club nine, losing the first finesse to East’s queen.East shifts to a spade, taken by dummy’s ace.Back to hand with a diamond, South plays a club to dummy’s eight, taking a second finesse that is a heavy favorite to win. When it does, declarer discards the spade eight on the club ace, ruffs a club (bringing down West’s king), crosses to the diamond ace and pitches his diamond 10 on the club jack.Contract made, thanks to a double finesse.CROSSWORD Across 1 Fifth pillar of Islam 5 Puts on a patch, say 9 Intestinal tract division 14
