Matthew McCully Tabled on May 15, Bill 185, an act to postpone school board elections from 2018 until 2020, entered the discussion phase at the national assembly on Wednesday. The bill, if passed, will defer scheduled school board elections until November, 2020 in an effort to avoid the voter fatigue of following provincial elections, scheduled for October of this year. The bill also aims to give the government time to explore the possibility of remote voting (possibly via internet) as an option for the 2020 election.Four briefs were presented during Wednesday’s discussion; one from Director of Elections Pierre Reid, One from Quebec Ombudsman Marie Rinfret, one from concerned citizen Chris Eustace and a combined memorandum from the Quebec English School Boards association (QESBA) and its French counterpart, the Fédération des commissions scolaires du Québec (FCSQ).The QESBA and FCSQ endorsed all CONT’D ON PAGE 5 CONT’D ON PAGE 5 This inspiring book, the winner of the 2018 CBC Canada Reads competition, deeply touches our emotions. It is an eye-opener that not only makes us aware of how little we know about important episodes of our history but also of the untold stories of Canadians who have shown extraordinary courage in the face of tragedy. It is the of story of the author's paternal grandmother, Mitsu Sakamoto, a Canadian of Japanese descent from Vancouver, and that of his maternal grandfather, Ralph MacLean, from the Magdalen Islands.Their lives were shaped by WWII, and this book is based on stories, memories and souvenirs they shared with their grandson.Mitsu Sakamoto's life took a tragic turn after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.British Columbia was given absolute power by Federal Justice Minister Louis Saint-Laurent, to re-locate Japanese Canadians to internment camps in BC, or to sugar beet work farms in Alberta which had started to grow this crop after sugar supplies had been cut off and farm hands were needed. It reluctantly accepted Japanese workers.WWII also brought tragedy into Ralph MacLean's life.In order to escape the hardships of life on his island, he enrolled in the army. His battalion was sent to Hong Kong, unaware, like the rest of the troops, that he was embarking on a suicide mission.Churchill had deemed this British colony indefensible and chosen not to send reinforcements, but he readily accepted Canada’s offer to send 2000 men.As Sakamoto sees it, “Canada was eager to prove itself.Australia and New Zealand were helping in North Africa.(.) hubris carried the day [and] political opportunism swept military logic out the door.” Sakamoto goes on to describe the hardships, the brutal treatment that both endured: Mitsu at the hands of her Canadian fellow citizens, Ralph at those of the Japanese. In early 1942, Mitsu's family was put on a train headed east. They were assigned to a farmer from southern Alberta, who put them up in a chicken coop.During more than six years they were subjected to inhuman living conditions, ranging from scarcity of water and food, to unbearable heat, to the backbreaking task of pulling beets day after day, in isolation from other Japanese Canadians. But eventually the family found ways to improve its living conditions and the means to start a new life in Medicine Hat.In 1941, Ralph's battalion arrived in Hong Kong shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbour.Sakamoto describes, in so far as it is possible to do so, what the troops suffered, first in trying to defend this Colony and then as Japanese POWs: constant starvation, illness, pestilence and all forms of cruelty. In 1943, Ralph MacLean was sent to Japan to work in a shipyard where, “…he went from being a POW to being a slave.” When the war ended, the Americans dropped barrels of supplies to the POWs in Japan.Ralph found a Gideon Bible in one of the barrels. He opened it and fell on Mark 11:25 “.if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him.” He knew then that he was going to live by those words. As for Mitsu, she had learned about forgiveness through the Japanese wisdom her father passed on to his children, her upbringing as a Baptist, and her teachings at Sunday school.Ralph and Mitsu met in an unexpected twist of fate. After his return from Japan, the train which was taking Ralph to Halifax stopped in Calgary.Among the well-wishers at the station was a young girl who attracted his attention. They spoke long enough for her to give him her address. After visiting his family, Ralph returned to Calgary and married her. They had a daughter, Diane, who met Mitsu's son, Stan, at a high school dance, fell in love with him, and married.Through the power of forgiveness, Ralph welcomed a Canadian of Japanese descent as his son-in-law, and Mitsu a Canadian from Alberta as her daughter-in-law.As this book testifies, forgiveness, as all other universal values, can find its way into our heart no matter the differences in culture, religion and life experience. After their children's marriage, Mitsu and Ralph “… shared a deep and unrelenting respect and love for one another. As impossible as it may seem, (they) saw themselves in one another,” Although the book centres on the lives of the author’s grandparents, the reader learns about the arrival of Japanese immigrants, their integration into Canadian society, their resilience, sense of community and determination to preserve their traditions and culture. To a lesser extent, the reader is also introduced to life on the Magdalen Islands. This book is written in a simple style and is easy to read; the story it tells has appealed to such a wide readership that CBC is preparing a television series based on it.I had the opportunity to present Forgiveness at the Lennoxville Library's 2018 Canada Reads evening held in March. At this event, as well as in the actual CBC Canada Reads competition, Forgiveness was selected as the “One Book to Open Your Eyes,” a well-deserved accolade.Author Mark Sakamoto is a lawyer by training. He has served as a senior political advisor in Ottawa, and is currently executive vice president of Think Research, and chair of the Ontario Media Development Corporation Board. He lives in Toronto with his wife and two daughters.Forgiveness is available at the Lennoxville Library.-Jocelyne Blais Ben by eye on the bridge By Gordon Lambie Since its closure at the beginning of last week, Lennoxville residents with a reason to go by the Bishop’s Bridge have been keeping a close eye on the work going on around the span.Last Friday, local parent Jeff Parent reached out to the Record to express concern over the seeming lack of barrier between the sidewalk section of the bridge and the large open hole left by the work crews.Parent said that he had reached out to the Transport Ministry to express his concerns, which were mainly focused on the possibility that a pet or small child might fall into the hole, but had not heard back by the end of the weekend.MTQ Communications representative Dominique Gosselin responded to The Record’s questions about the situation on Monday saying that there is a representative on-site monitoring the safety of the bridge and pedestrian passageway. She explained that the pedestrian passageway that has been built follows MTQ safety codes and that people should not be concerned. On Wednesday Nadine Fafard, who lives near the bridge, witnessed what appeared to be half of the new surface arriving on the back of a truck. The truck arrived on the west side of the river, approaching from downtown Lennoxville, which led to an argument over the fact that the delivery was supposed to take place on the other end of what has become a long detour.Asked about the delivery, Gosselin said that the oversize load was indeed delivered to the wrong end of the bridge but said that there was no major impact on the work’s timeline as a result of the need to drive the oversized load around to the eastern shore. On Thursday, a crane could be seen on site helping to lift the new surface into place. The bridge is still expected to be closed though the month of June COURTESY TRANSPORTS QUEBEC The pedestrian walkway on the bridge at the beginning of this week.Signal woman struck by car Record Staff SHERBROOKE A56-year-old Sherbrooke youth centre in Fleurimont.Until June 24, customers can purchase an orange paper door at the Home Depot store for $2 to help support the Maison Jeunesse-Est in its efforts to help homeless youth or those at risk of homelessness across Canada.Donations will help La Maison Jeunes-Est provide support to homeless youth aged 18 to 30."Every night, in neighbourhoods across the country, more than 6,000 young people have no safe place to sleep,” said Jeff Kinnaird Chair of Home Depot Canada and the Home Depot Canada Foundation.”That's why all donations collected from customers will be directly invested in helping young people affected by this serious problem. With the support of our communities, we can help vulnerable homeless people build a better future, one orange paper door at a time.” Research shows that the longer a young person lives on the street, the worse their health and well-being deteriorate and the more likely they are to be exploited, to experience trauma, to become addicted, to drop out of school, and to become chronically homeless.Through the Orange Door Project, the Home Depot Canada Foundation is supporting 120 organizations in their mission to help prevent and put an end to youth homelessness in Canada.Interested customers can also donate online at www.homedepot.ca/foundation.Last year, The Home Depot Canada Foundation supported more than 260 organizations and the company has raised more than $8.6 million to do so since 2007.Homeless youth aged 13 to 24 represent about 20 per cent of the homeless population in Canada.Page 4 Friday , June and added that in other parts of the world, remote voting has not proven to represent cost savings for elections or improve voter turnout.Chris Eustace opposed the postponement of elections, claiming it was an affront to the democratic process and could allow boards that have corrupt members to hold paid positions for another two years.Bill 185 DEAR EDITOR It upset me to read the final decision of ETSB to not take less than a five minute bus stop to pick up Mike Pezzi’s son at his doorstep. After reading the news article several months ago in The Record, I prayed that Mr.Pezzi’s son would not become a ‘statistic’.What would it cost the ETSB to adjust this minor request for safety’s sake? The cost would be only time.ETSB likes to preach ‘Students are our number one priority!’ Well they have proven themselves wrong! Maybe you have to be a child of an administrator to have special unheard of changes for their safety. If this were a kindergarten student would ETSB have presented a different outcome?ETSB’s spokesperson, Ms.Sharon Priest, is only that - a person who reports what her superiors tell her to report.Bruce Banfill, head of transportation, well step up and do your part! I’m sure there would have been a different outcome if Mr.Austin Bailey, former transportation director, now retired, were still in charge. There was a man that had true compassion and safety for each and every student. And Mr.Michael Murray, well The Record probably would not print what I would have to say concerning his weak leadership on more than one occasion.ETSB now has a bilingual director general, Ms.Kandy Mackey. The two prior DGs were not.Yes, we are Quebecers, but first we are Canadians and our communication in what is supposed to be an English school board should be in English first, regardless. Our school tax bills are going to be lowered.Wow! And then the dollar amount to be subsidized with a Liberal government grant.Let’s hope that ETSB will not ‘botch their job responsibilities’ and put the dollars in areas of safety and concern for all our students, who will be our leaders of the future.MARCIA STAPLES SHERBROOKE EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , June 1, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record What would it cost the ETSB to adjust this minor request for safety’s sake? The cost would be only time.DEAR EDITOR: Bravo to the Chief Electoral Officer of Quebec Pierre Reid for telling it as it is.On May 30, 2018, he testified at the National Assembly at a hearing of the Committee on Culture and Education on draft "Bill 185 - An Act to defer the next general school election and to allow the Government to provide for use of a remote voting method." The purpose of the bill is to postpone the scheduled school board elections from Nov.2018 to Nov.2020 to introduce internet voting in the hope to increase voter participation. But the May 28, 2018, Sherbrooke Record editorial said it best: "Bill 185 - an act to give the government two years to remember what it learned three years ago." At any rate, the Directeur général des élections du Québec basically told the Committee, Quebec is not and will not be ready for internet voting. He said the two year delay is too short to guarantee confidentiality and integrity of electronic voting. He said he tried to initiate a broad consultation on the matter last October but was there was no consensus. Moreover, he named cities that tried internet voting and there was no significant increase in voter participation.Norway and Britain have tried and given up on internet voting. His report obviously displeased those pushing for the delay.Let's recall it was the self-serving Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) and, its counterpart, the Fédération commissions scolaires du Québec (FCSQ) who wanted the postponement claiming "electoral fatigue" because of the provincial elections on October 1, 2018.They convinced the Couillard government to postpone. The idea of a delay has been denounced by the Parent Committees of the largest English and French school boards in Quebec: the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) and the Commission scolaire de Montreal.Last week the Council of Commissioners of the EMSB also voted - by majority - against the delay. The Lester B.Pearson School Board twice refused my written and verbal requests at Council to take a "hands-up" vote on the matter. At any rate, parents basically said the idea of postponing makes a complete mockery of the democratic process and is a bad lesson on democracy for our youth. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Committee's chairperson said it had received four briefs (mémoires) on Bill 185: a combined FCSQ & QESBA, Protecteur du citoyen, the DGEQ , and Chris Eu- stace. The highlights of my 2000 word brief include these points: - It is unethical to extend the mandate of commissioners in the last year of their present mandate.- Extending the mandate of commissioners for two years with pay without facing the electorate goes against the principles of basic democracy.- It is only in the economic interest of the FCPQ and the QESBA for the proposed delay.Consider: about $70,000 in extra salary for each of the chairpersons of the Montreal Island English boards. Some English boards have been described by the former QESBA president and executive director , Marcus Tabach- nick , as having "a lack of clear, coherent leadership." He also blasted the lack transparency and wrote some boards are "more closed than ever." As an example, he wrote of the secretive way an English commissioner was recently appointed. It was at the LBPSB, the spouse of the local politician.Reportedly: "Parents voiced contempt." We need a renewal of governance not an extended mandate.Consider some boards are corrupt .Why should the taxpayer put up with this corruption for two more years ?There is a need for candidates to run this year to help 'drain the swamp' in our elected school board system. The majority Liberal government has lost its way on the education front; it should do the right thing.Premier Couillard: Withdraw Bill 185.CHRIS EUSTACE MONTRÉAL, QC Letters ETSB ‘passing the buck’ on safety to municipality 6 Mallory, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1M 2E2 FAX: 819-821-3179 E-MAIL: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com WEBSITE: www.sherbrookerecord.com SHARON MCCULLY PUBLISHER .(819) 569-9511 MATTHEW MCCULLY ASSOCIATE EDITOR (819) 569-6345 GORDON LAMBIE ASSOCIATE EDITOR .(819) 569-6345 STEPHEN BLAKE CORRESP.EDITOR .(819) 569-6345 SERGE GAGNON CHIEF PRESSMAN .(819) 569-4856 JESSE BRYANT ADVERTISING MANAGER .(450) 242-1188 DEPARTMENTS ACCOUNTING .(819) 569-9511 ADVERTISING .(819) 569-9525 CIRCULATION .(819) 569-9528 NEWSROOM .(819) 569-6345 KNOWLTON OFFICE 5B VICTORIA STREET, KNOWLTON, QUEBEC, J0E 1V0 TEL: (450) 242-1188 FAX: (450) 243-5155 PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS GST PST T O T A L QUEBEC: 1 YEAR 155.00 7.75 15.46 $ 1 7 8 .2 1 6 MONTHS 85.00 4.25 8.48 $ 9 7 .7 3 3 MONTHS 44.00 2.20 4.39 $ 5 0 .5 9 ON-LINE SUBSCRIPTIONS QUEBEC: 1 YEAR 71.50 3.58 7.13 $ 8 2 .2 1 1 MONTH 6.49 0.32 0.65 $ 7 .4 6 Rates for out of Quebec and for other services available on request. The Record is published daily Monday to Friday.Back copies of The Record are available. The Record was founded on February 9, 1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.PM#0040007682 Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to The Record, 6 Mallory Street, Sherbrooke, QC J1M 2E2 Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA RECORD THE The Record welcomes your letters to the editor. Please limit your letters to 300 words. We reserve the right to edit for length, clarity, legality and taste. Please ensure there is a phone number or email where you can be reached, to confirm authorship and current town/city of residence.Names will not be withheld but the address and phone number of the writer are not published, except by request.Preference is given to writers from the Eastern Townships.Premier Couillard: Scrap Bill 185 Follow The Sherbrooke Record on Facebook and Twitter! sherbrookerecord @recordnewspaper We can be united in our decision to be a group, a community, or a church. We can be united in our desire to share a common mission or purpose.COLUMNIST Friday , June 1 , 2018 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Opening to the Spirit Today’s word: Unity By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) In unity there is strength, courage and inspiration.Perhaps that is why human beings have so often organized themselves into interest groups, villages and countries.Although there is much to be said in favour of unity, the danger lies in confounding unity with uniformity.Governments can become totalitarian and companies may brand, as disloyal, dissenting voices in their ranks.Religious organizations can also fall prey to mistaking diverse opinions as a threat to unity.Differences of opinion about the nature of God and what God asks of us have led to persecutions and wars. Those who insist that a literal interpretation of the Bible is the only kind possible would seem to me a good example of demanding conformity for the sake of unity.Yet unity is weakened through coercion and fear tactics. If we take our inspiration from Mother Nature we see that mono-culture agriculture leads to weakened species and disease.Just so in human society; although disruptive and annoying, diversity of opinion prevents us from becoming too sure of our own.History teaches us that human arrogance and hubris can lead to disaster in science, religion, economics, politics and just about any field of human endeavour you can imagine. When looking for common ground on which to unite, we can all agree we share the same species and the same home.Consider taking the advice of the prophet Micah from the Hebrew Testament: What does the Lord require of you?Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.Surely true unity will be strengthened and we will lead happy, productive lives.2) When we chose this word my mind leapt to January when we celebrate the week of Prayer for Christian Unity.Traditionally this meant that local churches met together for an ecumenical worship service that rotated through various congregations.Attendance has dropped over the years and in my area there hadn't been a service for a few years. One day I decided to host a different kind of event, a Curling bonspiel.I jokingly called it the Week of Play for Christian Unity. The name stuck and the annual bonspiel is still going strong. Why is unity so hard to manage?Maybe we really do need to play more and pray less.During the bonspiel we laugh and tease each other. We share stories, games, and refreshments, and our only goal is to enjoy each other's company. When we do that the unity comes naturally.I don't think that it is a coincidence that there are peace talks between North and South Korea just a few months after they played sports together at the Olympic Games. There have certainly been obstacles in the way, but even the talks are hopeful signs that may lead to unity. In our world, some sort of unity is a goal we can all aspire to.However, getting to that harmonious place seems so difficult at times.Even in church circles our competitive nature can stop us from working together.Perhaps we need to play together, laugh a bit, and then the unity will come.3) Unity is a basic principle of design theory; variety is another.Unity and variety exist in art not as opposing principles that along with other essential elements work together to create a whole. They are like two sides to the same coin.Contrary to some of our social groupings or many of the ways we establish belonging, unity does not require sameness. It has nothing to do with homogeneity and everything to do with diversity.A favourite example of this in art is the mosaic.Imagine a picture made up of bits of ceramic in various colours. Each piece is unique and could stand alone, different in shape, size and positioning from all the others. The central image that emerges is a result of and requires each individual piece and could only exist because of their collective diversity.I find it a useful metaphor for human culture. As did Reginald Bibby, Canadian sociologist who wrote a book back in the 90s about the challenges of pluralism, creating unity out of human diversity. In Mosaic Madness, Bibby contrasted the mosaic and melting pot metaphors for social organization. In a melting pot all flavours blend; in a mosaic they remain distinct but contribute to the whole. His premise was that while we have made significant progress in promoting individual and group rights, we've often done so at the expense of our collective wellbeing.Do we truly believe that each person is of infinite worth? On a cultural level, we've yet to integrate our efforts to achieve the common.Bibby's call to work for collective rather than individual freedom Is as relevant today as decades ago.Is it possible to create a social artwork on a global scale? Our vision of a "world made fair and all her people one" is the age-old dream of our diverse humanity living together as a unified whole.4) Many of us have a hard time with unity. Most days, we don’t even have unity within ourselves.I am “of two minds” about many things, and I suspect you probably are too.I want to help and I also want to avoid fostering dependency.I want to go to the party and I also want to have some quiet time alone.Every day there are decisions that must be made, even if part of us wants something else. When it comes to groups of people, we also often find a resistance to unity.I have been trained into comfort with ambiguity and have nurtured the value of rejoicing in diversity. As a group facilitator I was taught to look for the dissenting opinion and to draw this out, in order to avoid “groupthink” or excessive uniformity.A strong group is made up of people who are clear individuals who know themselves and can express a variety of opinions.A strong group also listens to each other and seeks to learn from the other, especially when the opinion is different. What I am describing is not chaos or anarchy, but rather a unity that can hold diversity. We can be united in our decision to be a group, a community, or a church. We can be united in our desire to share a common mission or purpose. We can be united in our agreement to respect each other as we work together. As Christians, we are united in Christ and nothing can change this, even if we have a variety of ways to express our worship and our beliefs. One word, four voices - now it's your turn to reflect: In what ways does unity play a role in your life?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dillabough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco is Consulting Minister to UU Estrie-Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley. Friday , June 1, 2018 Page 8 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture June 1 - June 7 , 2018 By Ocean Francoeur Special to The Record This evening, the Memphréma- gog Community Learning Center is holding a country concert fundraiser at the Piggery Theater.Fun is sure to be abundant; performer Ray Seguin will be coming back for an encore after last year’s success.Yet, the fundraiser is dampened by the nature of its necessity.Without it, the CLC, and all the wonderful activities it organizes, might not be able to continue.Community Learning Centers are set up all across the province.Their mandate is quite simple: since 2006, CLCs serve to help English schools build partnerships with their communities. They partner up with schools, such as Princess Elizabeth Elementary, to support student success and contribute to the vitality of English-speaking communities. What the CLC actually does, however, goes deeper than that: they provide a place to learn, grow, and connect with others, and not just Anglophones either; it is open to absolutely anyone. The Memphrémagog CLC has been running for a little over 10 years and according to those involved, it’s something special. The learning center, located in PEES, hosts a variety of activities.Just recently, the center worked with the Copp’s Ferry Museum and the PEES ethics and religion course to work on a big project focussing on farming. The idea paired well with the CLCs community gardens, another project of theirs, and worked on reconnecting students with their farming roots. The CLC also, and perhaps most notably, has organized a night school, that offers sessions twice a year. The spring and fall semesters last six weeks each and offer a variety of “skill sharing” classes every Wednesday. For 20$ a session, community members can take a course in anything that happens to be offered.Since the teachers are all volunteers, the curriculum changes depending on what skills the volunteers choose to share that semester, ranging from art classes and writing workshops, to computer skills classes, all the way to archeology courses.Mike Davis, who is an instructor and co-founder of the night school, reminisced about the beginnings of his project, when only he and Pervana Mladenof, the current coordinator of the Magog CLC, were teachers.“Back in 2008, it was only us two,” he said.“We taught four classes.Only two of them took hold: Pervana’s arts and crafts class and my business class. We only had about 3 students each.” Now, the school has much more to offer, and a lot more traffic.According to Davis, the last spring semester brought in 123 students.Mladenof, on her end, guessed that there were as many students during night school then at regular day classes. She continued to say that the caliber of the night school is “amazing”.“It’s completely based on volunteer work, both for organizing and teaching.Everyone who teaches here came to share a skill, it doesn’t matter who.If you offer, we’ll take it!” Davis pointed out that the sheer number of volunteer hours needed to run the CLC’s night school was “astonishing” and praised Mladenof for her dedication to the organization.“For the spring semester we had 12 committee members and twelve teachers for a total of 742 volunteer hours,” said Davis.“The average of the last few years brings that number up even higher.Pervana does incredible hours all on her own.We all know it.” While the scope of the CLC’s projects keeps growing, the funding to organize them does not. When the CLC was first founded, they had received a government grant.Since, they have withdrawn their assistance, asking the CLC to become self-sufficient, something that is difficult for an organization that is already scrambling for time and manpower to get everything done.“The funds are really so limited, especially for a co-ordinator,” said Davis.“We’re constantly being told to be self- sufficient. It’s nerve wracking.” “The original money was a start-up cost. That was ten years ago.The money is still there, but it’s decreasing. We had hoped for some help from the Eastern Townships School Board, but their funds are decreasing as well,” explained Mlade- nof, adding that the CLC wants to keep costs for their activities at a bare minimum to included everyone, no matter their socio-economic background.“We don’t want to exclude anybody. We want to maintain what we have now. That’s why I’m so grateful to my community. It’s so amazing that they rallied together to organize the Piggery fundraiser,” she said, extending her thanks to fundraiser organizer Christine Hodge.Despite their economic challenges, according to Mladenof, the night school is just as community oriented as the rest of the CLC’s activities: when members found out that some among them were not comfortable driving at night, they came together to organize for a shuttle bus to drive the night students to and from class.“We end each day with a snack at the cafeteria. It’s really a social network. There aren’t just people from Magog either,” she said, stating that some night students come all the way from Montreal or Vermont.Davis said that every evening after class at least 60 or 70 people would stay to chat.Robin Colyer has been involved with the CLC since nearly it’s beginning too. She’s been teaching viniyoga classes through CLC, both at night school and during the “off season”, in a room provided to her by the CLC.When she had first moved to Magog, the learning center proved to be place that made her feel at home.“It’s been wonderful. When I had just moved here, it was really my way in to the community,” said Colyer.“I met a lot of people.I felt like I had a place.Everybody was very welcoming, and they all have such a nice wide range of experiences. It’s a fantastic meeting space, but also one where you can contribute.” “I think it provides a service to the Anglophones in the community, but not solely to them. It’s a place you can feel comfortable no matter what,” she added.“Magog isn’t too big. It’s easy to feel isolated, especially people who live out in the country. It’s a problem.” Davis agreed.According to him, some of the effects of the CLC on the community can be measured.“The fun of learning has a large impact,” he said.“A lot of seniors suffer from isolation. The night school gives them a chance to get out there.” Farzin Farzaneh, an award-winning animated film maker and artist who volunteers as an art teacher at the night school, also felt the community-building effect of the CLC.CLC: kept tradition and delivered with passion and authenticity. Many people have had enough of the type of country music that has been on the Top 40 for way too long now.Two weeks ago I suggested Joshua Hedley as a new singer to discover and this week I have another suggestion. It might not be the music you will hear on the radio but this is the music you should buy in order to get exactly what you want and bypass the Top 40.Jason Boland has been taking the music that inspires him and took it further and made it personal.Jason Boland has spent the better part of the last 15 years establishing himself in his native state of Oklahoma and adopted home in Texas and while spreading his musical branches to cover a remarkable amount of territory, he never lost touch with those roots in the first place. In 1998, singer-songwriter Jason Boland, bassist Grant Tracy and drummer Brad Rice planted the seeds of a robust country band deep in the fertile red dirt music scene of Stillwater, Oklahoma.Twenty years later, Jason Boland & The Stragglers have grown into solid ambassadors for old-school, no frills country music, and their ninth and newest album, Hard Times Are Relative via Thirty Tigers, just might be the most country of them all.Everyone will greet the impressive, authentic country sound that Jason Boland and the Stragglers have perfected over almost 20 years. They have been selling out venues and commanding stages across the USA.Since coming together in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Boland and his closely connected crew have sold more than half a million albums independently (even if we haven’t heard much about him in Canada) and earned a devoted following that’s extended far beyond the band’s circuit. The band made its new album at yellow DOG Studios in Wimberley, Texas, co-producing with Dave Percefull and Adam Odor. The Stragglers recorded the new collection of songs live to tape, which has become a hallmark of their authentic country sound.A ballad that is as skillfully written as it is lovingly phrased, ‘I Don’t Deserve You’ opens the album Hard Times Are Relative in a heartfelt fashion, with the collaboration of good-looking guest vocals from Texas, songstress Sunny Sweeney. The raucous ‘Tattoo of a Bruise’ colorfully paints a musical portrait of people who peaked in high school reliving their old memories, while the title track not only provides a great slogan but also spins a vivid tale of two siblings struggling for survival. The tuneful baseball metaphor ‘Going, Going, Gone,’ which Jason Boland co-wrote with fellow Stoney LaRue, is one of the few songs on the new collection that weren’t written in the three years since the band’s previous release, 2015’s ‘Squelch.’ ‘Searching for You’ is definitely a tongue-in-cheek, goofy song about somebody losing their mind obsessing over searching for someone.Although the band is based in Texas, Boland, who hails from Harrah, and The Stragglers, Tracy, Rice, Nick Worley (fiddle) and Cody Angel (lead guitar, pedal steel and dobro), often get back to Oklahoma. They offer entertainment and a musical genre that people have been looking for, for quite a while.Their brand and style of country music is magical as it takes us back to something people loved but they are no copy of the past. They stand tall on their own, with a reverence for the artists and the music that was before them.New album for Willie Nelson Willie Nelson has released Last Man Standing, his new studio album, and the 11th for the label (Legacy Recordings). The new album came out just in time for Nelson’s 85th birthday. The first single from the project is the title track from the album ‘Last Man Standing’ and Nelson shared a music video capturing the making of the track.Last Man Standing, offers all newly- penned songs by Willie Nelson and longtime collaborator and producer Buddy Cannon. The new album is the worthy successor to Nelson’s God’s Problem Child, which showcased seven Nelson-Cannon compositions and debuted at #1 on the Country charts. With Last Man Standing, Nelson has added 11 essential new songs to his classic catalog.Last Man Standing is one of the Red Headed singer most personal and introspective albums to-date.It reveals the emotional range of Nelson’s concerns, from the deeply reflective ‘Something You Get Through,’ to the rollicking and playful ‘Me and You,’ and ‘Ready to Roar.’ This is an album that acknowledges how time flies by so fast while he marvels at the joy and beauty the world has to offer.Last Man Standing finds Willie Nelson still at the peak of his artistry. He will never cease to amaze everyone. He is a living or have laser stapedotomy surgery which included a negligible (two per cent) risk of losing my hearing.I wouldn't be able to have my hearing returned if the operation was unsuccessful.I was unsure about the ear surgery as I didn't want to lose what I had left. After thinking about it for a few weeks, I decided to go for the surgery.I confess to being nervous right up to the surgery date because I really couldn’t imagine how my hearing was going to be almost magically restored.Yet Dr.Lea was confident it was my best option and there was a high success rate with this type of operation. The day of the operation I was nervous because surgery of any kind was foreign to me.I was thinking, “What if the anesthetic doesn’t work and I’m still awake?Should I tell them?” And, “Are all those tools on the tray for me?” And of course, “You will remember to wake me up when it’s time, won’t you?” The staff at St.Paul’s Hospital was amazing. Before going under, the nurse had a calming effect as she held my hand. When I woke up Dr.Lea was smiling and I could hear better already. What a feeling. The sounds were beautiful and no words could describe the feeling.Even though you go in expecting the best result, it was still such a relief to learn everything went exactly as planned. There would be no more coping or struggling to hear. When I came home that same day I could hear my feet hit the floor for the first time in about two years. It was surreal.I could hear so well that my ear would ring.It spooked me at times being able to hear so perfectly. It was going to take some getting used to.I couldn't work out for a few weeks so when run day finally arrived I could hear my feet hit the ground.By not having to struggle with my hearing, all of my other senses seem sharper too.I’m more focused on every task than I ever remember being. My overall confidence is no longer an issue. The benefits of having the stapedotomy surgery should last a lifetime.www.runwithit.ca Twitter: @christineruns Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind Stanstead Spartans ?nish spring season strong It was a good week for Stanstead College athletics. On Monday, the Senior Boys and Senior Girls Rugby Spartans captured their respective ETIAC playoff trophies, both teams defeating BCS in their finals. The two teams also captured the ETIAC regular season banners, each with 4-and-0 records. In fact, the senior boys had an undefeated season, including winning their division at RugbyFest in New Brunswick, as well as the Greater Montreal 7s tournament and the Sherbrook Abenaki 7s tournament. On Tuesday, Stanstead College hosted the ETIAC junior rugby finals. The Junior Boys Spartans had already captured the regular season banner (7-and-1) and went on to win the playoff trophy as well.Meanwhile, the Junior Girls Spartans, in third place in the six-team league, defeated Massey-Vanier in the semi-final and went on to upset first-place Richmond Regional to take the playoff trophy. Also this week, the Stanstead tennis team won the ETIAC banner for the third straight year.In lacrosse, the Spartans won their semi-final against Alexander Galt on Tuesday but fell to BCS in the final 6-3.PHOTOS COURTESY OF STANSTEAD COLLEGE Senior boys rugby team Junior boys rugby team captains Senior girls rugby team Junior girls rugby team Stanstead College Tennis team Page 18 Friday , June 1, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record RATES and DEADLINES: ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICES BIRTH NOTICES, CARDS OF THANKS, IN MEMORIAMS, BRIEFLETS: Text only: 40¢ per word.Minimum charge $10.00 ($11.50 taxes included) Discounts: 2 insertions or more: 15% off With photo: additional $18.50.DEADLINE: 11 a.m., day before publication.BIRTHDAY, ANNIVERSARY & GET-WELL WISHES, ENGAGEMENT NOTICES: Text only: $16.00 (includes taxes) With photo: $26.00 ($29.90 taxes included) DEADLINE: 3 days before publication.WEDDING WRITE-UPS: $26.00 ($29.90 taxes included) WITH PHOTO: $36.00 ($41.40 taxes included) Please Note: All of the aforementioned (except death notices) must be submitted typewritten or neatly printed, and must include the signature and daytime telephone number of the contact person. Can be e-mailed to: clas- sad@sherbrookerecord.com - — has made a defensive mistake, do not be distracted; keep fighting hard to break the contract. How should South avoid feeling glum at the end of this deal?He is in four spades.West cashes his two top diamonds, then plays a third round, which East ruffs with the spade nine.In the auction, North’s three-dia- mond cue-bid showed three-plus-card spade support and at least game-invita- tional values.South signed off in three spades, but North had 13 points, so went on to game, despite knowing that he had a lot of losers and the dreaded 4-3- 3-3 distribution. If you smell a game, bid that game. There appear to be just three losers: two diamonds and one club.Since East had only two diamonds, surely he has two or three spades. If so, South can overruff at trick three, draw trumps and claim. However, here, he would be in for a nasty surprise when West turned up with three spades.Suddenly, South would have four losers: one spade, two diamonds and one club.Let our elusive friend the loser-on- loser play ride to the rescue.Instead of overruffing, South should discard his inevitable club loser.
