The network we are weaving for JEVI is solid and alive and you are all part of it.Thank you." The list of winners is available on the JEVI website: www.jevi.qc.ca Reviewed by Melanie Cutting All children are special. This is something we all know and appreciate, but some children are simply more special than others. In 2008, when aspiring author Craig Davidson was at a low point, emotionally and financially, he applied for a job as a school lunch supervisor, and ended up driving the bus for the school system’s “special needs” students for one year, four hours a day, five days a week. The experience proved to be, in his own words, “ transforma- tive.” Precious Cargo was nominated as one of the CBC’s 2018 Canada Reads contenders, as the “One Book to Open Your Eyes”.Although it didn’t win—being eliminated in the second round of vot- ing— it is a book well worth reading, and it does indeed open your eyes, albeit in a very humourous, entertaining and heartfelt way, unlike many of the more serious contenders for the Canada Reads award. As the author learns more and more about the lives lived by youngsters with disabilities through his daily interactions on the school bus, he is able to very effectively convey his knowledge and corresponding emotional growth to the reader.Davidson depicts himself as a very affable and easy-going guy, the perfect candidate for a bus driver of special needs students, certainly not one of the “by the book” drivers that he encounters regularly. The book opens with his keen writer’s-eye take on the job interview and training.Although bus #3077 is old and small (actually a busette), it has been specially equipped to handle a wheelchair, a skill Davidson finds a bit intimidating at first. Finally, he is ready to roll. There is only a handful of students on his little bus: 17 year old East Indian Nadja, who finds everything “nice” and favours the colour pink; Vincent, giant economy-sized Grade 12 student and pop culture expert; 13 year old autistic Gavin, non-verbal but physically expressive; Oliver, 13, video game nut with Fragile X Syndrome “an anomaly in the X chromosome…that can lead to delayed development – physical, intellectual, emotional or any combination of the three.Oliver’s own signifiers seemed to draw a little from columns A, B and C”; and finally, Jake, 16 years old, uber- intelligent, quadriplegic, cerebral palsy victim.Four months earlier, Jake and his mother had been struck by a drunk driver, killing the mother and severely injuring Jake.“One of his lungs collapsed. The other had a hole in it.There were lacerations to the liver, bruising to the heart and kidneys. He suffered damage to his pancreas and lost two-thirds of his spleen. Two pelvic fractures.Broken nose.Cuts and bruises all over.” And yet somehow, this young man, already dealing with so much, survived.Although Davidson formed warm relationships with all of his passengers over the course of the year, he was especially drawn to Jake, to whom he became a surrogate big brother.“In the hundreds of hours we eventually spent together that year, on the bus and off, Jake never once seemed defeated. No, not once.” Later, he describes the first time he got a laugh out of Jake: “He had the most wonderful infectious laugh – it bubbled up from the soles of his feet, a total body event. From that moment on, Jake’s laugh became the equivalent of auditory cocaine: I’d do just about anything for a fix.” Eventually, Davidson feels completely in his element with his charges because they all share a nerdy sensibility much like his own.“Rarely has a case of arrested development as profound as mine paid such handsome dividends.” One of the lessons the author learns in the course of driving the bus is that the kids do not sweat the small stuff. They are used to being different, and, for the most part, accept it.When Davidson witnesses some casual cruelty inflicted by local bullies, he is inspired to strike back.“There goes the retard bus, I heard one of them say.A dark curtain fell over my thoughts. My fingers tightened on the wheel.I couldn’t recall ever being quite so enraged as I was at that moment.” The confrontation that followed was futile, and possibly made a bad situation worse, but Davidson persists in defending his kids.“There would always be pointers and laughers. When we see this in children, it’s understandable. But that year of bus driving taught me that far too many of us reach adulthood still thinking there’s something inherently hilarious about disabilities.Or it could be the laughter is a kind of talisman, a means of warding off the swarming fear and confusion that many must have felt as my bus, with its passengers, crossed their sightline.” It is realizations like this that elevates this book beyond the merely entertaining into the category of “one book to open your eyes.” Interspersed among the chapters of Precious Cargo are pages from another book, The Seekers, an unpublished novel, featuring characters bearing an uncanny resemblance to the five kids on the bus.It was a mystery as to why these excerpts appeared, and who wrote them, but towards the end of the book it becomes clear that The Seekers is Davidson’s love letter to his “precious cargo”, in which their alter egos are “oddballs and castoffs” but they also have extraordinary powers, and ultimately, it is their job to save the world. In the final chapter, Davidson sums up his experience.“Here’s the thing: every day was the best day, even the crappiest ones.Every single day I spent with those kids. And I was grateful, so incredibly grateful, because I knew I’d done nothing to deserve it” Craig Davidson is the author of four books of literary fiction, including Rust and Bone, which was made into a film, and the multi-award nominated Cataract City.He also writes horror novels under the pseudonym Nick Cutter.Precious Cargo was written in 2016, and is available at the Lennoxville Library.Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , June 8, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: SUNNY Record Staff SHERBROOKE The New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) supports projects that are designed by and for seniors and is designed to help seniors improve the quality of life in their communities by participating in social activities and leading more active lives.Eligible applicants can receive up to $25,000 in the form of a grant under the Community-based Projects Component and up to $5,000 in the form of a grant under the Small grants Initiative Pilot.Projects must address one or more of the program’s five objectives: promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations; engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others; expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse; supporting social participation and inclusion of seniors, or providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors. The government has also introduced the following three national-level priorities inspired by the desire to solicit applications designed by seniors, for seniors: 1.Projects that would benefit vulnerable seniors populations; 2.Projects focusing on the diversity of Canada’s seniors; and, 3.Projects that use volunteerism to increase an organization’s capacity. This year, NHSP is testing new ways to expand support to seniors organizations that have projects for their vulnerable population. They are specifically aimed for those that have not received funding in the last five years (since 2012).These organizations can apply for small grants of up to $5,000 per project or for the Community-based funding of up to $25,000 (but not for both). In the context of Small grants Initiative, priority will be given to projects for seniors that meet at least one of the three national priorities.More information about the program and how to apply can be found on the federal government’s website, www.canada.ca, by searching for “NHSP,” or by calling 1-866-233-3194 or Francoeur Special to The Record Local all-girls high school Collège Mont Notre-Dame came under siege by some very special militants for a plastic-free environment last Wednesday and Thursday. As a part of a secondary five art project, students created miniature protesters, complete with picket signs, made of 100% recycled or recyclable materials to raise awareness on consumerism and pollution, especially of the plastic variety. The project, aptly called “La Manifestation”, or “The Protest”, allowed many students to realize the state our planet is in, and recognize their role in helping to save the environment.Their first step was to realize how much waste art projects create in the first place. Thus, the students created their characters out of anything they could find: old sunglasses, bits of fabric, yarn and, of course, plastic. The result is as amusing as it is eye opening.A small army of recycled “protesters” invaded Le Collège Notre-Dame this week “8 million tons of waste wind up in the sea!”, sculpture by Mégane Mélançon PICTURES BY OCEAN FRANCOEUR By Matthew McCully Cookshire Elementary (CES), the oldest among the ETSB elementary schools, has taken on a new life and a new purpose-to re-connect people, community and nature by becoming a Living School.Under the guidance of Dawson College in Montreal, the elementary school students and staff have adopted a philosophy of sustainable happiness and well-being for all through a variety of activities and projects bringing nature into the school and classrooms on a daily basis. The idea came about thanks to a longstanding program by the St.Francis Valley Naturalists’ Club. For around 25 years now, the club has been sponsoring visits to ETSB schools by naturalists and environmental specialists.Among them was Chris Adam, who happens to be the Coordinator for the Sustainability Office and Living Campus at Dawson College.A Living Campus or school is a concept of integrating the natural world into all aspects of education in an effort to foster sustainability and benefit from the positive impact both mentally and physically, that comes with exposure to nature.Adam paid a visit to Cookshire Elementary last year and the students were so engaged, that he was invited back for two additional days.Among the topics addressed was how nature is a free facilitator for stress reduction as well as ‘a great creator of situations of wonder’, as Adam put it.At that point, interim principal Tina Jacklin started to think, “Why can’t this be something we can do every day?” According to Jacklin, the first step was for the staff to sit down and discuss their values and beliefs as a school, what they have, what they want to be, and what’s important. The school made the unanimous decision to get serious about the Living School concept and developed a partnership with Dawson College through Adam in December of 2017.Cookshire, while still under several feet of snow, wasn’t in a position to start gardening just yet, but Jacklin said one of the school’s first initiatives was a garbage audit. For a full week, the students went through all the garbage generated at the school each day, separating what could be recycled and composted.Jacklin said at the end of the week, the results of the audit were that of all the garbage from the school, only 9 per cent was real garbage, the rest could be recycled or composted. In April, representatives from CES attended a Living School symposium at Dawson where Adam and CES worked to clearly define what the attributes of CES as a living school should be.Since then, the teachers and students have been implementing the plan of action, incorporating the natural world into the school and classroom wherever and whenever possible.CES made the announcement official yesterday, and invited local media and special guests on a tour of the new Living School.During the tour, the Grade 1 class was busy feeding the worm composter. On the menu today was apples and cucumbers.Jacklin said that the students keep worm journals, logging what the worms like and how they are doing. The students pointed out that the worms are big fans of bananas, but aren’t especially fond of peeling.Grade 5 and 6 students talked a science fair they had held recently, where the students did a variety of different experiments looking at the affects of pollution and the importance of protecting the environment. On a table in the hallway of the school were dozens of little cups containing caterpillars.According to Jack- lin, they are being raised by the students, and when they become butterflies, they will be released into the pollinator garden being developed on the school grounds.Jacklin then invited St.Francis Valley Naturalists’ Club President David Wright, one of the special invited guests, to break the ground to plant a yellow plum tree, the first of what will become a fruiting hedge bordering the schoolyard for the students to enjoy and cook with.Page 4 Friday , June 8, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Cookshire Elementary becomes Québec public service (QPS) is launching a large-scale call for applications to recruit professionals in several fields and in all the administrative regions of Québec. The purpose of the call for applications, which will take place from June 7 to 19, 2018, is to qualify candidates for the three following employment groups: socioeconomic research and planning officer (105), administrative processes analyst (108) and administration specialist (111).These three employment groups (105, 108 and 111) make up approximately 15% of all QPS positions, and there are currently more than 1500 positions available. While interdepartmental personnel are needed in all fields of expertise, resources are particularly scarce in the areas of: program development and evaluation, project management, administration and finance, economics, statistics and research. The full-time and part-time positions to be filled are largely located in the Cap- itale-Nationale and Montréal regions, as well as in other administrative regions of Québec, such as Nord-du-Québec, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine."The Government of Quebec is working in collaboration with community organizations and institutions to encourage more English-speaking Quebecers to apply for a job in the civil service,” said Kathleen Weil, minister responsible for Access to information and Reform of democratic institutions and minister responsible for Relations with English-Speaking Quebecers.“Over the next two weeks we will continue to remind people that now is the time to apply by spreading the word through the community networks.Increasing the number of applicants and creating a strong database of candidates is the first step towards increased representation of English-speaking Quebecers in the civil service." In 2015, the QPS reviewed and improved its approach with regard to staffing, and this is the first time that such a major recruitment process has been conducted since that will allow candidates to simultaneously qualify for three different job banks.Departments and bodies will then be able to identify candidates according to their profiles and the available positions.Professionals interested in submitting their applications can consult the employment gateway to find out more about the various steps of the qualification process. The QPS consists of more than 60 000 people working in some 20 departments and approximately 60 bodies throughout Québec, each with their own mission, resulting in highly diversified career opportunities. The By Sidhartha Banerjee THE CANADIAN PRESS Anew group of mostly Lac-Megantic residents is seeking authorization from Quebec Superior Court to sue for economic and moral damages worth upwards of $5 million relating to the Lac-Megantic rail tragedy in 2013.Train engineer Tom Harding, Canadian Pacific Railway and Montreal, Maine & Atlantic, the defunct railway company at the heart of the disaster, are named in the court document filed in mid-May.The motion to institute proceedings was filed in Lac-Megantic and involves 49 plaintiffs who opted to not join another, massive class-action with 5,000 people and businesses that was authorized in 2015 against the same defendants.Earlier this year, the judge hearing that case joined it with a $409-million Quebec government lawsuit and another lawsuit brought by insurance companies. That one trial is to be heard in September 2019.On July 6, 2013, a runaway train hauling tanker cars loaded with volatile crude oil broke loose and barrelled into the town of 6,000 in the wee hours before derailing and exploding. It set off several massive blasts that wiped out a large swath of the downtown core and killed 47 people.Three former MMA employees charged criminally in connection with disaster were found not guilty by a jury last January: Harding, rail traffic controller Richard Labrie and manager of train operations Jean Demaitre. One month later, the Crown announced it would not appeal the verdicts. The new filing, like the other legal challenges against the railway, alleges that Canadian Pacific was negligent in the leadup to the accident and should have known the product being shipped was volatile. It also states the company had responsibility for the cargo being shipped.A Canadian Pacific spokesman said there would be no comment as the matter is under litigation, but the railway giant has previously denied any responsibility in the disaster because it handed off the trains to MMA for the final leg of the journey. The new motion describes the plaintiffs as people who resided in the Lac- Megantic area, owned or leased property there or were physically in the area at the time of the disaster and suffered losses.A total of $5.1 million is being claimed, with amounts varying from $15,000 to $1 million. The motion says the amounts are being sought for various reasons, including stress, being forced from home and the loss of income, personal property or enjoyment of life.A Quebec City law firm representing the 49 plaintiffs declined to comment further Thursday.Charles Shearson, Harding's lawyer, said his client's name remains on the list of defendants despite his limited means.“It's another legal problem,” Shearson said.“I think his ultimate goal is to get all the legal processes out of the way so he can embark in some kind of healing, some kind of semblance of regaining a normal life for himself, given the circumstances.” By Mike Hickey SPECIAL TO THE RECORD Ihave just returned from a visit to the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia when I received two messages, a voice mail from my brother Pat and a an e-mail from Eddie Pomykala informing me that longtime Bishop’s University legend Bruce Coulter had passed away.Ironically Coulter’s death came within one day of the 15th anniversary of the death of long-time Canadian Olympic coach Jack Donohue.I was in Atlanta when this happened 15 years ago and the similarities between the two men are noteworthy.Donohue and Coulter were kindred spirits, men who were honoured for their coaching accomplishments but it was what they did off the basketball court and football field that made them special.Their ability to inspire and lead by example not only the athletes they coached but nearly anyone who had the pleasure and privilege of meeting them.Coulter’s achievements as football coach and athletic director are well documented. When he retired from coaching he was the winningest coach in Canadian university history and the respect he enjoyed from his peers was evidenced by the establishment of the Bruce Coulter Trophy which is awarded annually to one of the two outstanding players of the championship game.As athletic director he was the person responsible for hiring basketball coaches Wayne Hussey and Eddie Pomykala who guided the Gaiters to three National Championships. But Coulter’s effect on Bishop’s and the Lennoxville community goes far beyond athletic successes. He molded boys into men and set a sterling example of how to be a productive member of society. He not only believed in fair play, sportsmanship and doing things the right way, he implanted those ideas and values in his student-athletes on a daily basis. There is no question that he developed football players but more importantly he developed men who became leaders in their respective field.A family man, the Coulters’ Lennoxville home was often a haven for students needing a room, a decent meal or just a friendly ear.Despite his greatness Bruce was truly a man of the people who never touted his own horn.Even in his final years when injuries and illness took a severe toll, he always had a smile on his face and time for anyone who wanted to chat.In sports we too often equate success with wins and losses, championships and coach of the year awards. But the true value of any person is not their individual accomplishments but rather what they give, how they motivate, inspire and help others. It was Bruce’s greatest attribute and those who benefitted from knowing him are richer for it.He was a man who walked the walk and did the right thing for the right reason.May he rest in peace and may his life continue to inspire.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , to my Mom and Dad and us five kids for five months. We could be loud and loved to run up and down the stairs playing games.Every night we needed supper for ten, and we weren't light eaters. This might have been a difficult time, but her quiet serenity made it easier. She also had a good sense of humour. One Hallowe'en my Aunt created a haunted house in Grammie's home, and she became a witch who served us blindfolded kids human eyeballs to eat (which of course, were peeled grapes). Her temperament came from a strong personal faith and a deep belief that whatever experiences life gives you can be endured and even celebrated.Whenever someone says the serenity prayer, I think of my Grammie.2) Out of the whirlwind, away from the storm.Serenity is what surrounds me as I rest in this outdoor armchair contemplating the moving landscape, travelling with my eyes the rolling hills, drifting among sheer clouds, leaves whispering beneath the conversation of birds.I find serenity usually in nature, away from whirlwind human activity. It needn't be a calm beach under the midday sun; as well a rushing stream, busy always going where it's going, or paradoxically standing on the back porch in a thunderstorm.Immersed in nature, or visiting it in memory, however I place myself in the midst of wildness, the unmade world restores me to a sense of deep peace inside. And brings me back to my center.Serenity and peace are often paired in the same phrase.Just as peace is not merely the absence of war, serenity is not the absence of the rushing world, but rather the still point at its center.Centuries ago Lao Tse intuited what science has confirmed about this spinning planet we call home: "Thirty spokes share the wheel's hub; it is the center hole that makes it useful." Like the fire at the earth's core, serenity is that around which everything spins, and we with it.Once in turbulent times I memorized these words of T.S.Eliot poem entitled The Still Point of the Turning World: “I said to my soul, be still and wait without hope, for hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love, for love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith, but the faith and the love are all in the waiting.Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought: So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.” Neither hope, nor love, nor faith…serenity is beyond them.In serenity we step back and tap into our own deep inner stillness at the soul's hub.We need not seek serenity, merely remember that it is always there waiting.3) When my kids were small we had downstairs neighbours. These neighbours were a couple in their 60’s who were into meditation.I know that they were into meditation because they often came knocking on our door to ask if the kids could stop making noise because it was their meditation time.Maybe you know someone who could keep a two-year old and a seven-year old quiet for an hour in the early evening, but this was not going to happen in our house. They were not running wild, but they were playing with trucks and building blocks, dancing and telling stories. The neighbours gave up knocking on the door and started shouting up through the hallway “WE ARE TRYING TO MEDITATE!”.Serenity is something we often seek outside of ourselves.Once everything is done, once everything is quiet, then I will feel at peace. It is a fool’s mission.Everything in the world around us will never be serene. If serenity is to be found anywhere, it will be found inside. It is found inside when we accept the imperfections of the world and the people around us.Meditation, for that couple, clearly was not working. But I still highly recommend it.We accept the discomfort. We accept the boredom. We accept that our mind will never be completely still. And, somehow, through all of that acceptance, we find a place of serenity.4) Serenity is a state of being I wish I experienced more often. In my agenda-filled, task-oriented life, it is not something that can be conjured up at will. When I take time to ‘be’ rather than ‘do,’ I find I am more prone to be serene. But do I really need to stop all my activities?Buddhist Satya Narayan Goenka teaches that when we are able to maintain our equanimity in the face of the trials and tribulations of life we have acquired serenity. He teaches the importance of being aware of our breathing at all times, as a tool to keep us grounded. In Christianity, Judaism and other faiths, the breath (ruach in Hebrew) can also mean spirit, indicating that it has long been somehow connected to our ability to access our spiritual nature.Even as I sit here writing, becoming more and more aware of my breathing, I find myself becoming calmer, more thankful for my life and more centred.I can imagine this life-giving oxygen entering my body and bringing energy and vitality to every single part, from my toes to the top of my head.Where does this air come from?Where does it go?I take it for granted so much of the time.Yet without my ability to breathe my connection to life is broken. At each baby’s birth we wait anxiously until we hear that first breath expelled, signally that life has begun. At death we witness the last breath taken, sign that our time on earth has ended. Our breath is intimately entwined with being, connected body and soul and reminding us, as Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said, we are indeed “spiritual beings having a human experience." Why not experiment?Try paying attention to your breath all day.Experience the serenity that ensues and a door will open to your spirit. One word, four voices - now it's your turn to reflect: How and where do you find serenity?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco is Consulting Minister to UU Estrie-Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley. We accept the discomfort. We accept the boredom. We accept that our mind will never be completely still. And, somehow, through all of that acceptance, we find a place of serenity.COLUMNIST Friday , June 8, 2018 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com T H E V O I C E O F T H E E A S T E R N T O W N S H I P S S I N C E 18 9 7 T H E FRIENDSHIP DAY Turn! Turn!” “I didn't know I had to walk on after that,” said Stapleton, one of country music's biggest stars, before launching into his catalogue of country soul songs, including “Whiskey and You” and “Broken Halos.” He will play to a much bigger crowd when he headlines Saturday night's CMA Fest at Nissan Stadium. The show concluded with Stapleton, Stuart and Dale Jett, a third-generation member of the Carter family who were pioneers of country music, leading the crowd in a rendition of the standard “Keep on the Sunny Side.” After playing its last games of the Development Academy season last Saturday against the Philadelphia union, the U17 and U19 Impact teams are now focusing on the playoffs, from June 18 to 26 in Oceanside, California. Both teams finished at the top of the Northeast division and in the league's top 8, which means both will be top seeds in the first playoff phase. It's the fourth consecutive year that the Impact U19 qualifies for the playoffs and the third straight time for the U17 team."It shows the progress made since our beginnings," said the Academy director and Impact U19 head coach Philippe Eullaffroy."It also validates the development options we took, and the quality of the work done daily. Our standards are higher and higher and it's now the norm for both our teams to qualify every year.We also have to mention that the Impact U15 did well and would also have qualified for the playoffs it there was playoffs at that age." The group phase will regroup the 32 qualified teams for each age category, split in eight groups of four teams. After facing every team in its group, the top team is the only one to move on to the quarterfinals. The Impact U19 will face an interesting challenge as it is grouped with the Atlanta United, the Houston Dynamo and the LA Galaxy. The team ended its season with a 20-2-4 record, in fourth place in the entire league, and scored a total of 83 goals in 26 games.Forward Vincent Lamy scored 21 goals in 22 games and the team's defence managed to get 11 clean sheets.Mathieu Choinière, Clément Bayiha and Daniel Kinumbe were also invited to the first-team training camp and are currently with the U21 Canadian team at the Toulon Tournament. The Impact U17 will face Saint Louis FC Academy, Players Development Academy and the Carolina Rapids."Our goal is to be champions, but we know that we need to take it one game at a time to succeed," said Impact U17 head coach Nicolas Gagnon."The biggest challenge will be to keep controlling every game while displaying our qualities and identity." The team finished its season in 7th place in the league with a 17-6-3 record. The offensive production is split between Calin Calaidjoglu (10 goals), Moulay Ab- dallah Kanzi Belghiti (12 goals) and Woobens Pacius (13 goals).Local Sports Over the past 10 weeks our Walk or Run to Quit members have been actively participating in our program Let our readers know about your products & services Tel.: 450-242-1188 Fax: 450-243-5155 email: jbryant@sherbrookerecord.com National Break Free 5km event celebrates physical activity for all ages If you have recently taken up running and would like to hone your skills in a non-competitive event, the second annual Break Free 5km run is for all levels of abilities. The main focus of the run is getting people physically active while also incorporating challenging obstacles in the form of optional play stations. In a Q&A interview, Break Free 5km organizers John Reeves and Janis Lema explain how the event came about and what they hope to achieve from it.Q: What makes the Break Free 5km unique?A: Break Free 5km is not your typical walk or running event, it is a celebration of healthy lifestyles that allows you to play along the way.Walk or run and partake in our optional play stations. Each play station is there to remind us that living a healthy lifestyle is meant to be fun. This year Running Room and Canadian Cancer Society will host eight Break Free 5km events across Canada, starting in Vancouver on June 9.Q: Who is this event for?A: The event is a celebration walk or run for those graduating from the 10 week Walk or Run to Quit program.Family and friends are invited to join those dedicated participants whose goal is to quit smoking and take up a healthier lifestyle.Local community members looking for a fun non-competitive event will also enjoy this day.Cost is low at $25 with kids under 12 FREE.Q: Why is this event important?A: Over the past 10 weeks our Walk or Run to Quit members have been actively participating in our program and have either successfully quit or are attempting to reach their cessation goals. They are joining in the Break Free 5km to celebrate, some with their quit buddy and many with their families and friends, to recognize the challenges to succeed in quitting have been achieved and now they can break free and start on a fresh road to a healthier lifestyle.Q: What kinds of obstacles will there be?A: Surprise activities along the way are all intended to focus on fun.Optional play stations include: boulder toss, bouncy castle, human bowling alley, spider web and super soaker gauntlet.Cool off at the water gun station, run through the human bowling alley and make your way through an inflatable bouncy obstacle course.Q: What has the feedback has been like?A: Over three years we have seen the quit rate jump to over 50 per cent for those taking the 10-week in store program compared to the national ‘cold turkey’ rate. The success of the programs’ curriculum and the support participants receive has proven to be a success.Everyone in the program, whether they quit or not, believes the program helps- this will be how they and others will quit smoking and change their lives.Q: What are your plans for the event in future years?A: Sustaining effort over the past three years is key to helping Canadians in their cessation.Currently, the national smoking rate is at 18 per cent and the Canadian Government has a goal to bring the rate down significantly to five per cent by 2035.Q: How important is family participation to your event?A: The whole family benefits when a member quits smoking.Social habits and family activities change, and not just in making healthier food choices, but in how the family gets physically active together. These active living events become the choice for the entire family to enjoy.Q: How can we register?A:Simply visit a local Running Room store to register.Walk or Run to Quit continues to revolutionize the way people quit smoking while helping them become physically active for life.Since the pilot project began in 2013, thousands of participants have signed on for the ten-week training program, assisting them to quit smoking by learning to walk/run 5km.Research has found that becoming physically active helps curve cravings and withdrawal symptoms. In 2017 over half of participants interviewed reported being nonsmokers six months after completing the program.Participants also continue to run on average, three times a week.Visit runtoquit.com for more information.Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind COURTESY The Impact quali?es for the Development Academy Playoffs Page 18 Friday, June 8, 2018 Wedding season is upon us.I have been married for over 30 years, and I would like to share some wisdom and hard truths with any prospective brides or grooms. The man or woman you are marrying will not change. Many things are hard-wired by the time we are in our late teens. To avoid a lifetime of regret and disappointment, please pay attention to the warning signs and your gut instincts. When we are young, we begin with hope and enthusiasm. These are good traits, but they can also blind us to reality.Take your time entering into this commitment. When differing attitudes arise on occasion, it’s a chance to see what your future would look like with this person. No amount of love or sacrifice can change a person. Please take my word for it.If your prospective husband does not believe in calling when he is out late, you will spend many nights lying awake, wondering where he is and worrying. If your prospective wife does not cook or clean and has no interest in doing so, you won’t have many home-cooked meals or a tidy home.I have spent most of my life trying to adapt to the marriage I am in.This is my fault.I don’t blame anyone but myself.I wish the 57-year-old me could talk to the 24-year-old me and tell me how it is.If I could have seen into my future, I might well have been much happier. Now I find myself absolutely brokenhearted — defeated, ashamed, lonely. My bad.The signs were there.I ignored them.I can’t believe I am almost 60 and unhappier than I can ever remember being.I have resigned myself to this life. There are too many little ones who rely on me for security. To divorce this man would wreck our family. And because he shows a completely different person to the rest of the world, no one would support me.To leave this marriage at this stage is not an option.I have lost the will to even stand my ground. If you are considering getting married and have a little nagging voice that is trying its best to be heard, listen.Please.I have learned to be my own best friend and get through each day.And that, people, is no way to live.— Doing a Life Sentence With No Parole Dear Doing a Life Sentence: I wholeheartedly agree with your advice to heed intuition and think carefully before entering a marriage. And you’re right that no one should expect marriage to change or “fix” a person. But I have to ask you to please consider not resigning yourself to such unhappiness for the rest of your life.Just think: The 77-year-old you might write another letter, wishing the 57-year-old you had made a change. You still have decades ahead of you. They could be the happiest years of your life.If you feel trapped in the marriage because of financial dependency, consult a lawyer and look into your options. There may be more there than you think. If your husband is abusing you physically or verbally, call The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 for further guidance or just someone to talk to.Dear Annie: This is in response to your answer to “Sleeping Bare”: If I have to evacuate my house because of a fire, being nude will be the least of my problems.— Naked Ed Dear Naked Ed: Your letter made me laugh out Let’s go back to trick one.Suppose South wins with dummy’s spade ace and plays on diamonds. How many chickens does that hatch?Right — nine: one spade, three hearts, four diamonds and one club. SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2018 Don’t leave anything to chance this year.Do background checks and look for alternative ways to use your skills.Keeping ahead of the competition and tracking what’s currently trending will help you stay on top of your game.Don’t wait; it’s up to you to create opportunities.GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — Participate in organized events and activities.Your input will lead to a proposal that is worth your while. An emotional matter should be dealt with behind closed doors.CANCER (June 21-July 22) — You can make changes, but do so for the right reason. If you let your emotions take the reins and make decisions for you, mistakes will occur.LEO (July 23-Aug.22) — Look for a way to appease others without taking on too much.If you delegate jobs to others, you will show your strength and things done.VIRGO (Aug.23-Sept.22) — An emotional matter should be looked at carefully.Don’t settle for something imprudent.Make a counteroffer or find a solution that is within your budget.LIBRA (Sept.23-Oct.23) — Take your time.If someone pressures you, walk away.Relationships will need to be handled with care.A stressful domestic situation will develop due to poor spending habits.SCORPIO (Oct.24-Nov.22) — The desire to make a move or alter your life in some way needs to be handled with care.Impulsive action will lead to disappointment.SAGITTARIUS (Nov.23-Dec.21) — Participation is favored, as long as you don’t overspend.Someone will complain if you don’t live up to a promise you made.Emotional stress will wear you down.CAPRICORN (Dec.22-Jan.19) — Concentrate on self-improvement, not on trying to change others to fit your lifestyle. The more you look inward, the easier it will be to let others be who they are.AQUARIUS (Jan.20-Feb.19) — Speak up and get involved in conversations that will help you resolve issues. Not everyone will agree with you, but at least you’ll know how
