We are all excited about this new step, but along with excitement comes some trepidation.Bea is working out some of her anxiety about how the routine will change (taking a bus!) and how there might be new challenges (making friends and scary auto-flushing toilets). We talk about these anxieties together, but we are also reading some fun `back to school’ themed books to manage our feelings and prepare.Separation anxiety is a very normal reaction for kids going to school for the first time, or even transitioning from a pre-school or daycare setting to school.Kids need to feel reassured and anchored in their relationship to their primary care-giver.There are plenty of books which help address the stress of being away from parents in a school setting for the first time.I am a fan of The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.A former ballerina and Olympic athlete, Penn turned to writing children's books after her health prevented her from continuing the physically straining career she had begun.Inspired by her own daughter, she wrote The Kissing Hand in 1993.Since its publication this book has helped millions of families through the transitions of going to daycare, camp or school. In this book a Mama raccoon comforts her young raccoon who is going to school for the first time and is worried about missing home. She reassures him that her love will be with him all through the school day (or night in the case of a young raccoon). Many schools use this book to help Kindergarteners with the transition to school, but it is also available at the Lennoxville Library to borrow for some advance preparation.Other titles which may be inspiring for nervous kindergarteners: Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes and Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney.Even if your little one is very confident about this big step, it is not a bad idea to talk about the feelings which might come up in the first weeks, and share a few extra snuggles while you're at it.I always loved going back to school.I was a lucky kid who liked school, and September was always a happy reunion with my friends and a time for new sweaters.I know not everyone has this same love for back to school. The literary character I most deeply associate with the back to school joy I have always enjoyed is the famous Harry Potter.Poor young Potter, who slept in a bedroom cupboard under the stairs, has the ultimate first days of school experience. He receives a letter delivered by an owl announcing his wizard status and inviting him to a prestigious school far away from his terrible foster family. In the same week he discovers he is blessed with wealth, and among the most famous wizards of all time.Harry has a tumultuous time at school, with having to save humanity over and over from dark magic, but with each book in which he is studying we get to feel the excited anticipation he feels returning to Hogwarts for school.Reading Harry Potter was a critical life step for me, and even though it has been more that 20 years since it was originally published, the story and its magic are timeless. As a read-alone book I would recommend Harry Potter for 5th graders and up, but this spring we read aloud the first book to Bea - age 5, and while some of it was over her head, it was a worthwhile experience of reading a book together as a family. The entire series is available at the Lennoxville Library, in French and English, and on audio book as well! It has been 7 years since I last "went back to school" as the autumn leaves change colour.I sometimes miss the excitement of new classes and new friends and fresh new clothes.I am vicariously enjoying this beginning now through my daughter and I hope that she will love books and school as much as I have.Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , August 24, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The A D S Lennoxville library Back to School Record Staff September is an important time in students' academic careers, especially for the 69 per cent of young Townshippers aged 15 to 25 who are employed while they are studying. From the beginning of the school year, it is essential that these students opt for a lifestyle conducive to their educational success, by adopting strategies that better reconcile their studies and their work. With this in mind, the Project Partners for Educational Success in Estrie (Projet PRÉE) is sending a clear message to employers, students and their parents: studies are the priority throughout the school year. From August 22 to September 7, efforts will be made to bring this important message to different audiences. This year, employers are at the forefront of demonstrating the active role they can play in the academic perseverance of their young student-employees and the importance of graduation for a qualified workforce.Projet PRÉE is also asking its school, community, and municipal partners, as well as the media, to take part in the campaign to spread awareness messages through their various means of communication.Education is a crucial lever for our economy. It contributes to human development and sustainable social, cultural and economic enrichment of our society."We all have a role to play in valuing school perseverance and employers are no exception,” said Cégep de Sherbrooke Executive Director and Projet PRÉE Co- Chair, Marie-France Bélanger.“In the current context of labor shortages, young people are being solicited more and more by employers. It can be tempting for a student-employee to drop his classes to take a full-time job and earn a salary, especially if he / she has difficulty in school .Employer collaboration in the work-study balance in the young becomes essential to ensure qualified, competent, and healthy succession," Several actions can be put in place to promote work- study balance and encourage qualification and graduation.Allocating no more than 20 hours per week for full-time students is a basic undertaking for any employer Employers can also be understanding and flexible during exam periods by offering staggered shifts to their employees, or supporting them with words of encouragement.According to the PRÉE 43 per cent of young Townshippers between 15 and 25 who hold a job during their studies spend more than 15 hours a week on their jobs.20 per cent of students hold two or more jobs.33 per cent of young people have already thought of interrupting their studies because of the difficulty of reconciling studies and work, and young people work mainly to: pay for going out (83 per cent), to save (82 per cent), to gain experience (76 per cent), make payments (74 per cent), or buy a car (71 per cent)."Here are some very eloquent statistics.School-work reconciliation affects a large number of young Townshippers.Generally speaking, in Quebec, close to one-third of retail trade workers are between the ages of 15 and 24, and this number reaches 43 per cent when only the specific sectors of retail trade and food is taken into account,” explained PRÉE Coordinator Josiane Bergeron.“Thus, it is essential to provide employers, youth, and parents with tools to allow a work-study balance that is favorable to student perseverance and the educational success of our youth," Projet PRÉE has created several video clips about work-study balance featuring individual employers who are meeting the needs of stu- dent-employees as well as hints at how to choose a cooperative employer.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 The Liberal party, incumbent in all six Townships ridings, is fielding five newcomer candidates as veteran MNAs across the region each announced their held at the Cookshire Fair was won by Judith Choquette from Pajulous Farm in Sherbrooke.Choquette won an overnight stay for two at B & B Le Bonheur in Scotstown. The package includes a one-hour health treatment of her choice, a gourmet plate of scones with tea, herbal tea or coffee at the Scott Tea House, a night at the lodge, and a healthy breakfast with seasonal organic products.Myrna MacDonald, Chair of the fair’s Arts and Culture Committee, carried out the draw with Yolande Lemire, Networking Agent for the Service L'Arterre in the MRC of Haut-Saint-François.The last steps put forward in the framework of the Haut-Saint-François PDZA were presented at the fair, These include the L'Arterre service to accompany and pair aspiring agricultural producers who are considering transferring their land to a succession or with landowners of available farmland.(COURTESY CLD HAUT SAINT-FRANCOIS) Yolande Lemire (left) and Arts and Culture Committee Chair Myrna MacDonald draw the name of PDZA drawing at last weekend’s Cookshire Fair. The prize was accepted by winner Judith Choquette by her partner Paul Thibodeau, CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Sylvain Dussault, the call came in at 1:52 a.m.Thursday morning.A resident living on rue Jacques, right next to the Palettes Peron building, noticed flames shooting up from the centre of the building around the silo.By the time the fire department arrived, Dussault said flames and hot smoke were spreading quickly.Because the flames were approaching two gas reservoirs in the building, Dussault said the department had to declare a Code Red.The risk of explosion pushed authorities to evacuate the residential sector on the edge of the company’s property.Residents were awakened in the middle of the night and had to evacuate their homes for several hours.Fortunately, the safety valves held.Eventually the fire calmed down and firefighters were able to regain control of the blaze and avoid a major explosion, Dussault said.Dussault said the local department enlisted the help of the St-Isidore-de- Clifton and East Angus departments. When the fire was at its most extreme, Dussault said there were between 40 and 60 firefighters working to contain the situation.By noon on Thursday, parts of the building were still burning and smoking.A team was working its way from one of the building to the other, extinguishing the last of the burning sections and flattening the building with a backhoe.A handful of employees and residents from the village watched as firefighters struggled in the smoke, dismantling the remnants of the building that had been part of the landscape for fifty years.Dussault said it was too early to determine what started the fire, but a team was digging carefully around the area where the fire was thought to have started, looking for a potential cause.Palettes Perron General Manager Hugo Brunelle said the company plans to rebuild, but couldn’t give any other details or timeline.Yesterday, Brunelle said the priority was to inform the 31 employees and contact clients that have contracts with the Palettes Perron.According to Perron, the building and tools and equipment lost in the fire amounted to losses in the millions, but he could not give an exact estimate.By Mia Rabson and Janice Dickson THE CANADIAN PRESS Maxime Bernier declared open war on his own party Thursday as the outspoken and controversial Conservative MP abruptly quit the Tory caucus, announced plans for a new political movement and derided his former leader and colleagues as “intellectually and morally corrupt.” With Conservative caucus members gathering in Halifax for a policy convention that was expected to bring the Bernier boil to a head, the Beauce MP instead stayed behind, summoning journalists to a snap news conference that proved breathtaking in its defiance.“I am no longer a Conservative,” he declared after reading a scathing diatribe against his party and its leader, Andrew Scheer _ the Saskatchewan MP who narrowly edged Bernier out of the leadership job last year in a loss some have suggested he never got over.“I am now convinced that what we will get if Andrew Scheer becomes prime minister is just a more moderate version of the disastrous Trudeau government,” he said.“I have come to realize over the past year that this party is too intellectually and morally corrupt to be reformed.” With the aftershocks still reverberating, Scheer emerged in Halifax to fire back.Bernier “is more interested in advancing his personal profile than advancing Conservative principles,” Scheer said.“He has decided that he is more important than his Conservative colleagues and indeed the Conservative party. He has traded an opportunity to influence policy in government for his own personal ambition.” Bernier said he plans to contact Elections Canada immediately about the path towards creating a new party and will spend the next several weeks travelling the country to meet with people interested in joining his cause.Bernier said it's the party and its current leader that has lost its way, not him.Scheer, he said, is too focused on polls and focus groups, and too afraid of being attacked by people on the left and in the media to make good Conservative policies. He specifically pointed to Scheer's support for retaliatory tariffs against the United States, saying he was told internal party polling showed Canadians supported the Liberal plan and the Conservatives would therefore support it unless the polls changed.Bernier's insistence on supporting an end to supply management, in defiance of Conservative policy, and his recent reflections about the perils of “extreme multiculturalism” had Scheer distancing himself from Bernier and his comments. As recently as three weeks ago, Bernier had said he was planning to run for the Conservatives in the next election despite Scheer's decision earlier this summer to strip him of his portfolio in the Tory shadow cabinet.Bernier said he decided to quit the party Aug.14 after speaking to Scheer, just prior to the Tory leader's statement criticizing Bernier's comments about too much diversity being bad for Canada.“We had a very polite discussion. After that discussion, I realized that I don't have any place in that party anymore.” The news appeared to catch most Conservatives completely by surprise, including some who supported Bernier in the leadership race.Ontario MP Tony Clement says he was- n't sure what Bernier's decision would mean for the Conservatives, but it likely won't end well for the longtime MP from Beauce, near Quebec City.“History teaches us that people who quit are replaceable and forgettable,” Clement said. The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , August 24, 2018 Page 5 New Facebook scam emerges in Sherbrooke Record Staff The Sherbrooke Police are warning the public about another solicitation via Facebook, aiming to defraud victims. The ploy works as follows: the victim is approached on Facebook with a friend request. What begins as simple friendship becomes more involved over a number of weeks and months, sometimes developing into a romantic relationship. After developing a level of trust, the suspect then takes the opportunity to ask for help and asks victims to send money transfers in order to help with a difficult financial situation. In the most recent case, a man said he was a dealer of precious metals and had to carry out transactions with the Togo Ministry of Resources. The victim, who transferred thousands of dollars, has not heard from her scam- mer since.Sherbrooke Police are advising members of the public that if they think they have been victimized by such a scam, to first delete the friend request and not to carry out monetary transactions over the phone. This scam is international in scope, they say.Quebec MP Maxime Bernier quits Conservatives, lays rhetorical waste to party Fire ravages Palettes Perron By Nadia Naffi Assistant Professor in the Education Department (Educational Technology), Concordia University In July, Gap launched its back to school advertising campaign featuring a group of children of colour from P.S.153 in Harlem, New York, including a young girl wearing a hijab. The ad spurred positive media coverage for its celebratory inclusivity and a massive virulent debate on social media. Many applauded Gap’s decision, which they perceived as empowering women and girls around the world. Some who wear hi- jabs or wore hijabs shared the struggles they faced to find comfortable clothing in middle and high school.Hamida Ahmed, a well-known model and Miss Maine pageant winner, expressed her approval in a tweet.Others were outraged by the picture of a young girl in a hijab. They brought up stereotypes about Islam, including child marriage, as well as highly publicized cases of honour killings. There were similar reactions from French and Canadian citizens to the Gap ad.Journalist Sophie Durocher of the Journal de Montréal said that she almost choked when she saw the ad.Anne-Christine Lang, an elected French politician representing La République En Marche, called on her constituents and social media followers to boycott Gap, tweeted that she will never accept seeing young girls veiled and vowed never to set foot in Gap again.France and Canada do not share the same stance on hijab in schools. In 2004, France, a secular state, banned all religious symbols in schools.Unlike France, the Canadian federal government protects the right for reasonable accommodation, which includes religious accommodation. In France, the Féministes laïques started a first petition titled “le voile n’est pas un jeu d’enfant!” (the veil is not a children’s toy) on Change.org.The petition has gathered to date almost 8,000 signatures. In Canada, a second petition with the same title has about 1,000 signatures.Children pay the price Islamopobia is on the rise in the West; it is up 250 per cent in the U.K., France and Canada.Sidrah Ahmad, a student researcher looking at Islamophobic violence faced by Muslim women in Toronto, says Islamophobia in Canada has gradually risen to a boiling point. In 2016, a Montréal schoolteacher denied one of his students her right to take an exam unless she showed him her ears, which she refused to do.Last spring, a teenaged basketball player, Je'Nan Hayes, was benched at her team’s finals in Maryland. She had played the whole season but according to the regional referee did not qualify for the playoffs due to national rules about headwear. In Toronto, an 11-year-old-girl in a hijab was put under the media spotlight when she made up a story of being attacked by a stranger. Many demanded that she publicly apologize, forgetting she is a child acting normally; children do lie sometimes.A scared child can sometimes “come up with her own personal bogeyman.” .Some Muslim women and girls have “chosen” to stop wearing the hijab to escape the feeling of being labelled, misjudged, incompatible with their community or unsafe.A new clientele?Gap’s use of models in hijabs is not new; the brand depicted women wearing headscarves in its 2017 ads. That initiative also spurred mixed reactions. But the idea of young girls wearing hi- jabs seems to whip up the urgency to save young girls from political and religious agendas.Gap is not the first clothing brand to show a woman wearing a headscarf. In 2016, Dolce and Gabbana introduced a line of hijab and abayas that Muslim women worldwide celebrated, though some felt excluded by the use of a white model. In December 2017, Nike launched the Pro Hijab saying they wanted to “make sports an inclusive space for Muslim women.” However, they forgot to acknowledge the many women in hijabs who had already claimed their rightful place in the athletic world.World champions Ibtihaj Muhammad, Manal Rostom, Doaa Elghobashy, Zahra Lari and Amna Al Haddad are examples of women athletes who were never hindered by their headscarves. In Canada a couple of months before the launching of the Pro Hijab, a Winnipeg high school ordered custom hijabs for their athletes. They were the second high school in Canada to do so.After Nike’s launch, a din of tweeters promised to boycott the brand and accused Nike of normalizing the domination and oppression of women. The tweeters escalated to condemn hijabs and even equated the hijab and Islam with terrorism.Amna Al Haddad, a UAE weightlifter, was one of the inspirations for the Nike Pro Hijab line. The right to cover; the right to uncover The issues around wearing a hijab is complex. Many people know very little about Islam, let alone about what the hijab actually means for the women who choose — or are forced — to wear it, or for those who don’t wear one.I am a Muslim woman.I do not wear a hijab. This does not make me less of a Muslim. But the West tends to represent all Muslim women, veiled or not, by the hijab.A negative connotation has been attached to the hijab through news media, movies and popular discussions where many claim Muslim women are oppressed and need to be rescued, despite its value to those who wear it.The hijab for young girls is not only opposed by non-Muslim white feminists wanting to “save” young girls from an “oppressive religion” but it is also opposed by some Muslim women react against the hijab for young girls. They perceive early hijab as supportive of child abuse, misogyny and of denying women their rights starting at a young age.A Muslim mother complained about a traffic safety campaign in London showcasing a four-year-old girl in a hijab. The safety campaign was pulled. Many shared novelist Samina Ali’s TED talk, in which Ali explains the origins of the hijab.Ali says the headscarf has never been a requirement of Islam.Rather, the hijab was a contextual solution to a problem that occurred more than 400 years ago.Ali says the verses of the Quran only advise Muslim women to dress based on custom and function.Hajar J.Woodland, the U.K.singer and writer, says: “The right to cover is just as important as the right to uncover.” Amna Al-Haddad, a professional Olympic weightlifter who competed in her hijab and consulted with Nike on the Pro Hijab, has appeared lately without her veil. But not all Muslim women have the right to make their own choice. For example, Iranian women are being jailed for exercising their choice with headscarves. Some tweeted the hashtags #MyS- tealthyFreedom #WhiteWednesdays and #NoHijabDay.Some also feel that girls are persuaded by unexamined cultural norms such as “carrying the flag of Islam,” “being a good daughter,” “following great women in Islam,” “looking like my mother,” “looking like an angel,” and “going to heaven.” Gap’s mistake Gap is not the only brand that did not understand how their marketing message affects their global audiences.Gap made a few mistakes despite its potential good intentions.Gap introduced its first girl in hijab in a back-to-school advertising campaign. In many Western schools, hijabs on young girls are controversial. They are banned in some countries, like France and Austria, and highly criticized in others.Gap assumed their attempt to normalize the hijab on young girls would help Muslim girls feel included, like the world was theirs: “Hey young world, the world is yours”.But the rise in hate crimes and bullying based on racism and Islamophobia is on the rise, and so the message is not that simple.Gap assumed that young children, specifically Muslim girls, are equipped to deal with complex reflections about what religious head wear entails in Western societies. Many of these young girls find themselves in the midst of very heated religious, cultural and political debates. Finally, Gap assumed that all girls were free to make decisions about their hijabs and whether to wear it.Sometimes they are, and sometimes they are not.Did Gap purposefully create a controversial ad?Is the idea that no publicity is bad publicity true? While many applauded Gap’s inclusive ad, many western audiences were horrified by it, and many Muslim women relived bad memories they were trying to flee.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , August 24, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record QCNA RECORD THE Record Staff At a special general meeting Thursday, the members of ODACE, formerly known as the the Fleu- rimont Chamber of Commerce (CCF), approved an agreement with the Sherbrooke Chamber of Commerce (CCS) that will see the two bodies unite under the single banner of the CCS.As a result, the CCS will from now on represent the interests of all ODACE members. There was a recent meeting between the two presidents, which revealed that the visions and issues of the two organizations could easily be married and were closer than various conflicts in the past had suggested."It was time to move on and the momentum was there for ODACE members.Sébastien Lussier, former director general of the CCF, is now part of the CCS board of directors. In addition, François Desmarais, also former director general of the CCF, is also well-es- tablished at Commerce Sherbrooke.ODACE's board of directors now believes that its members and Fleuri- mont merchants will be well defended and represented,” commented President Patrick Pinard.“The CCS is committed to ensuring harmony among its members and advocating for the causes supported by ODACE.Networking "without a tie", which was the strength of our organization, will be maintained through future activities of the CCS.If we want to demonstrate to our elected representatives that a duplication of structure is useless, we must show ourselves as the example,” he added. The agreement between the two organizations provides that all membership fees and partnership agreements currently in place at ODACE will be honored by the CCS.Finally, it is also expected that Patrick Pinard and Patrick Rahimaly, both merchants from the East and members of the Board of ODACE, will present the group on the Board of Directors of the CCS to ensure continuity.Friday , August 24, 2018 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Jennie Desruisseaux and the Capelton kids Submitted by Lewis Downey Aclean monument always attracts your eyes and invites you to reminisce and appreciate loved ones.Let’s pause on the middle name inscribed on this monument: “Jennie Desruisseaux”.Her maiden name was Eva Jeanne Clément. She was born July 7, 1891, daughter of Joseph Octave Clément (1868-1897) and Eliza Murtagh (1870-1959).She was one of four children. On May 10, 1910, she was married to Frederic Desruisseaux from Ascot with the full consent of her parents. She was 19 and he was 49.On top of it, he was a widower with an 18-year-old son, Oscar. One might be inclined to believe that back then, holy matrimony was a better deal than just hiring a house maid.Frederic died on Dec 14, 1946 and was buried in the Sand Hill Cemetery beside his first wife.Following Frederic’s death, Jennie was hired by Harry Swenson, a WW2 veteran who lived on the Stanstead Highway (now Rte 143).Harry had undergone several surgeries because of gangrene from war injuries, which resulted in the amputation of both his legs.Jennie not only cared for his daily needs, but took in three other boarders.By then, Jennie’s mother Eliza Shallow had come to help her with the household duties while Jennie looked after the outdoor chores. She and her mother were florists; they could arrange any wedding bouquet with whatever fresh flowers and herbs they had on hand.Jennie also went to the Sherbrooke market to sell the wonderful arrangements. It was around that time, during the 1950s, that the Capelton kids were recruited, for $1 an hour.Jennie used to hire kids from the Capelton area to help her with hard jobs like weeding, transplanting geraniums, picking vegetables in the garden, hanging out the laundry on the line and other odd jobs.Jennie had arthritis in the hip joints, which gave her a limp and made her unable to bend down. What intrigued us young Capelton kids was how come she had a French name and spoke such perfect English. Not only did she constantly correct our English pronunciation, but she continuously recited poems and quotations from famous English literature all by heart. She was renowned for her talent and was often invited to all kinds of social evenings and events. What we cherished most about working for her was the lavish home cooked meals served to the whole crew, young and old.Jennie and her mother used to love correcting our English, specially our intonation and of course, making sure to mind our manners at the table.Of the utmost importance to Jennie and her mother was maintaining a high level of respect for the royal family, because of their ‘blue blood’.Harry Swenson (1891-1955) passed away and willed his property to Jennie. She lived to be 88 years old; most of her last 30 years were spent bedridden because of her hip problems.A long time boarder, Bill Loomis, remained in the house and looked after her care, assisted occasionally by other friends and neighbors.Bill passed away just one month after Jennie did.My wife and I were proud to purchase the property. We renovated it and happily made it our home for 20 years before relocating. As a grateful gesture, I took the initiative of cleaning Jennie’s monument in the Malvern Cemetery, hoping that others will have the heartwarming pleasure of seeing that someone still cares for her.Jennie, you were so generous, I sometimes wonder if you, too, had blue blood in your DNA.COURTESY LEWIS DOWNEY You’re invited to Literacy in Action’s ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Tuesday, September 25, 2018 5 p.m.to 7 p.m.Amédée-Beaudoin Community Centre 10 Samuel-Gratham Street, Lennoxville Please RSVP.819-346-7009 All are welcome.Sawyerville funeral services not disappearing By Gordon Lambie In light of concerns the in the community that the funeral home in Sawyerville has been put up for sale, Francois Fouquet, the Director of the Coopérative funéraire de l'Estrie, is reassuring the public that English funeral services in the town are not going anywhere.“I understand very well that there is a concern about loss of services,” Fou- quet said, explaining that the current home, which has been a part of the community since 1993, was put up for sale not because the co-op plans to leave Sawyerville, but because it wants to serve the community better.“It is small building and, in fact, the problem is that it is too small,” the director said, explaining that although families in other parts of the townships tend to be on the smaller side, those in the Sawyerville area tend to need more room.“Eight out of ten families tell us we can’t go there; we have too many brothers and sisters.” Given that reality, Fouquet said, the decision was made to sell the smaller building and make other arrangements with larger spaces in the community.“What we have done is negotiate with two partners in Sawyerville to continue to offer funeral services,” he said, explaining that the home will now rent the old Catholic church hall or the old elementary school gymnasium as needed to conduct funerals and receptions.“There are no cuts in English service,” Fouquet said, explaining that although there will be no permanent funeral home in the community, the same team of people will continue to serve the community in the same way it already was.“To organize a funeral people were either coming to Lennoxville or we went to their home, and that service is still available,” he added.Sherbrooke Chamber of Commerce absorbs Fleurimont’s ODACE TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Record Staff For the seventh year in a row, the Es- trie Multiple Sclerosis Association (ASPE) is renewing its partnership with the Estrie Antique Car Club (CVAES) for the 24th edition of the Les Belles de Fleurimont exhibition taking place this Sunday, August 26.More than 500 cars will be exhibited beginning at 8:30 a.m.at the Centre Julien-Ducharme in Fleurimont for car enthusiasts to enjoy.Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.A festive atmosphere and Rockabily music reminiscent of the 1950s will entertain visitors while they discover spectacular cars and a variety of kiosks at the small flea market. The event offers entertainment for the whole family. There will be a canteen on site as well as a number of door prizes given away.Like many other not-for-profit organizations, the funding awarded to ASPE is not enough to meet the growing demand for services for people with MS and their caregivers. In 2017, the 23rd edition allowed the ASPE to raise $6,000.This is possible year after year thanks to the Estrie Vintage Car Club and this year, organizers hope to raise more than $7,000.All profits from the event will go directly to the ASPE to ensure the maintenance of front-line services adapted to the changing condition of people with multiple sclerosis in the region. In addition, the ASPE will be able to enhance its independent multiple sclerosis research fund at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke. This is an exceptional matching program set up by the Faculty that attracts many talented researchers to the Université de Sherbrooke. For every dollar invested in MS research, the Faculty doubles the amount, providing a 200 per cent return. In addition to teams of researchers who are trying to better understand the disease, projects in engineering, kinesiology, and administration are helping to advance ASPE’s understanding of the disease and the services it offers to those afflicted. The Estrie Multiple Sclerosis Association is a non-profit organization that provides support and availability to people with multiple sclerosis and their families. The five-area intervention plan (medicine, psychology, physiology, Zen nutrition, and psychosocial) makes it possible to improve the quality of life of affected people in a global and personalized approach.MS is an unpredictable and progressive disease for which there is no cure and whose causes are, so far, unknown.Muscle weakness, loss of balance, extreme fatigue, and vision problems are some of the symptoms. In Estrie, nearly 2,000 people suffer from this debilitating disease. For more information on Les Belles de Fleurimont, please contact Pierre Casavant (CVAES) at 819-575-9949 or.René McKay (ASPE) at 819-818-5929.COURTESY Janet Jackson to receive award at Black Girls Rock awards The Associated Press Janet Jackson will receive the rock star award at the 2018 Black Girls Rock awards. The Grammy winner will be honoured as a ``phenomenal woman in music,'' organizers said Thursday.Jackson recently released ``Made For Now,'' her single with Daddy Yankee.Queen Latifah will host the show, which will be taped Sunday at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.BET Networks will air the special celebrating the accomplishments of black women on Sept.9.Other award recipients include Mary J.Blige, Naomi Campbell and Judith Jamison.Blige will receive the star power award.Campbell will be presented with the black girl magic award and Jamison will receive the living legend award for her work in dance and choreography.Former Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Ed King dies at age 68 By Kristin M.Hall THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Afamily friend says Ed King, a former guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd who helped write several of their hits including ``Sweet Home Alabama,'' has died in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 68.Scott Coopwood said in a statement that King died on Wednesday due to cancer.King joined the band in 1972 and was part of their first three albums with their distinct three- guitar sound. He left the band two years before a plane crash killed two singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines in 1977.He rejoined the group 10 years later and played with them until he retired in 1996 due to heart problems.King was also an original member of the California psychedelic group Strawberry Alarm Clock, which had a hit with ``Incense and Peppermints'' in 1967.Steven Tyler sends cease and desist to Trump for use of song The Associated Press Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is again demanding that President Donald Trump stop using the band's songs at rallies.Tyler's attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter to the president Wednesday, a day after the song ``Livin' on the Edge'' was heard at a Trump rally in West Virginia. It's not the first time Tyler has asked Trump to stop using Aerosmith songs.Tyler sent the Trump campaign two cease-and-desist letters in 2015 for its use of the band's music. The latest letter says by using ``Livin' on the Edge,'' the president ``is falsely implying that our client, once again, endorses his campaign and/or his presidency.'' Tyler tweeted it isn't a political issue, he just does not let anyone use his songs without permission.Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Saturday, Edmonton receiver D'haquille Williams was flagged for objectionable conduct after he and two teammates crawled through an end- zone advertising placard following a touchdown in the Eskimos' 40-24 victory over the Montreal Alouettes. The night before, Winnipeg receiver Darvin Adams wasn't penalized for his innovative TD celebration. After hauling in a 72-yard touchdown pass, Adams commandeered an on-field television camera and used it to film some of his teammates in the Blue Bombers' 44-21 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.Under the CFL's revised standard, Williams' celebration would be allowed.``This change came after discussions held by the commissioner, presidents from the league's member clubs and on- field officials and supervisors,'' said Darren Hackwood, the CFL's director of officiating.``Everyone involved wants to reach the right balance between giving players an opportunity to express their joy and creativity and maintaining the pace and sportsmanship of our game.'' The revision falls within the league's broader standards and rules for objectionable conduct. That includes the prohibition of unnecessary physical contact with an official, throat slashes and any action with a sexual connotation. As well, players who choose to use a prop such as a hand-held television camera or other private property assume liability should that property be damaged.Hiking in the Fall is Nourishment for the Body, Mind and Spirit Fall is a great time to get into shape, with cooler temperatures and a kaleidoscope of colour combining to make your re-introduction back to nature - compelling.Eastern Canada is known for the most beautiful autumns in the country, if not the world. With the first frost shocking the leaves into brilliant shades of autumn splendor, your fall hike could be over a virtual carpet of sun drenched nature at her best.Every season is beautiful, yet hiking a forest trail in the fall is like climbing through a rainbow.Bringing a camera on your fall hike is a must, even if it’s just a phone camera, which these days can take excellent photos. If your body won’t let you run without pain and the gym is not so appealing anymore, hiking is the perfect transition sport for you. It’s walking - but over hill and over dale - and comes in many levels, from an easy stroll to reaching for tree roots to pull you up to the top of a cliff. If you haven't hiked before or it has been a while, visualize yourself close to nature, surrounded by trees, breathing in fresh air and hearing the crunching of leaves beneath your feet, the soothing rhythm of a running stream nearby. While you’re absorbing all of that for your personal archives, you’ll be getting a pretty decent workout in the process.Hiking is the secret ingredient for wellness of the mind and body. There are many hiking destinations to choose from where you live but here are some hiking places to explore in the Eastern Townships, which in the fall is as beautiful a destination as you’re likely to find.According to the Eastern Townships website on events and activities, here are a couple of hiking trails for all levels of abilities: MONT-MÉGANTIC NATIONAL PARK: There is 25 km of multi-use trails and the 17 km of hiking trails give you access to exceptional views of the peaks of Mount Megantic (1105 m) and Mount St.Joseph (1065 m).MONT-ORFORD NATIONAL PARK: The hike is without doubt the best way to discover Mont-Orford National Park. This is the perfect opportunity to access many of the most spectacular views in the Eastern Townships. The park is home to, among others, white-tailed deer and great blue herons, observable in their natural habitat. It also has a great diversity of amphibian and reptile species. In the fall, sugar maples offer a colorful spectacle to hikers. In the winter, the park becomes a must for cross- country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts. All four of the region’s national parks, (Mont Orford, Mont Mégantic, Frontenac and Yamaska) have beginner-friendly trails. Here are my top five hiking tips: 1.Before hiking, invest in proper gear, especially shoes – to protect you from slipping on challenging terrain.Invest in clothing made from breathable, sweat- wicking fabrics.Be prepared for changes in temperature by bringing an extra layer of clothing.Wear a hat to protect you from the sun and to shield you from ticks.2.Start at beginner level if you have gone a long time between hikes.Work your fitness level gradually to the intermediate level. Each trail is marked for level of intensity from beginner to advance.A bad situation could develop if you are too exhausted to continue before the end of your hike.3.Preparation is the key - plan how long the hike will take and check for weather conditions before heading out.4.Bring enough water and snacks to fuel your body.Eat a protein bar before and during your hike for replenished energy.5.Break time - depending on how long the hike it is a good idea to stop for a rest. It’s your opportunity to capture the moment on film.Fall can inspire you to restart a fitness program or to at least spend quality time outdoors with family and friends. For safety reasons tell your loved ones where you are going and leave details. Then imagine yourself leaping into a beautiful setting, as if in an oil painting - only better.www.runwithit.ca Twitter: @christineruns Instagram: runwithit_christineblanchette Run With It on YouTube - RunWithIt Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind JOHN MOE Follow The Sherbrooke Record on Facebook and Twitter! CASS FUNERAL HOMES 3006 College St., Sherbrooke QC PHONE: 819-564-1750 FAX: 819-564-4423 www.casshomes.ca Death Death Death Death Death ASK THE DOCTORS By Eve Glazier, M.D., and Elizabeth Ko, M.D.Dear Doctor: For years now, I’ve been trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, less meat and a whole lot of olive oil and mixed nuts. Now I’m seeing that one of the studies supporting this has been retracted. Can I go back to hamburgers and fries?Dear Reader: The Mediterranean diet has been the focus of all sorts of attention in the decades (yes, decades) since it was first introduced.Based on the eating habits of people living in southern Italy, Spain and Greece in the 1940s and ‘50s, it’s just as you outlined — a fruit- and vegetable-forward diet with lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of nuts, legumes and olive oil.First publicized in the mid-1970s, the diet really entered the public consciousness in the 1990s.That’s when a spate of studies looking into the eating plan got a lot of ink, and diet books devoted to the concept began to hit best-seller lists. In 2013, a large study in Spain randomly assigned 7,447 individuals to either the Mediterranean diet or to a low-fat diet. All were overweight, and all had risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking and diabetes.Although the study participants assigned to the Mediterranean diet faithfully followed the plan, those assigned to the low-fat diet tended to return to their normal eating habits. As a result, the study turned out to be as much a referendum on the modern diet as it was about the Mediterranean plan. After five years, researchers concluded that the Mediterranean diet lowered heart disease by 30 percent. But did it?According to a recent analysis of the study by a scientist in England, it’s impossible to know. That’s because of two extremely important words in the description of the 2013 study — randomly assigned. For the results of these types of studies to be free from bias, participants must be randomly assigned to the treatment option they will follow.Without absolute randomization, you can’t be confident the resulting data is the effect of the treatment. And as you’ve probably already guessed, the English scientist discovered that the 2013 study did not, in fact, use absolute randomization. In some cases, entire villages were assigned to the Mediterranean diet.Although those participants all followed the same food rules, they also shared other important environmental factors that could affect their health outcomes. This was sufficient to derail the claim of randomization for the 2013 study, and to merit both a retraction and a rewrite by the New England Journal of Medicine in June. The original takeaway of the 2013 study was that several thousand people had fewer heart attacks and strokes because they followed the Mediterranean diet. The new conclusion is several thousand people had fewer heart attacks and strokes and they followed the Mediterranean diet.In this study, the diet can no longer be cited as the specific reason for the health benefits. Finally, regarding your question about burgers and fries, the answer is moderation. As an occasional treat?Probably fine if you’re in good health. But as a dietary staple? Please don’t.Eve Glazier, M.D., MBA, is an internist and associate professor of medicine at UCLA Health.Elizabeth Ko, M.D., is an internist and assistant professor of medicine at UCLA Health.Mediterranean diet study’s ?awed analysis warrants correction Church Services Anglican Presbyterian United Friday, August 24, 2018 Page 19 The Record production@sherbrookerecord.com All are welcome to a BIBLE INSTRUCTION MEETING to be held, the Lord willing, SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 2018 at CHRIST CHURCH HALL, EUSTIS Route 108, North Hatley.AFTERNOON: 2:30 - A couple of weeks ago, I got my son-in-law to call him and say, “Hey, phone your folks!” He did, and we had the usual upbeat chat.We made a breakfast date. But he ended up flaking on that.My husband’s heart is quietly breaking. We aren’t demanding a lot of Sam’s time, and we know it’s his life to live as best he can.But total non-communica- tion has meant bad things in the past.I don’t want to have to go visit him in prison again. My role these days is basically nagging his dad to text him one more time.(My husband of 40-plus years is a truly wonderful man, but he’s the passive/denying one; I’m the doer/ - rescuer. That’s not a brag.) I don’t know whether either of us is willing to devote more time to Al-Anon or counseling. Our lives are getting shorter every day, and we’ve already poured a lot of emotional energy into the sinkhole.Should we keep trying to get Sam to respond?Or what?— Sad Stepmom Dear Sad Stepmom: If it were that easy for you to detach from your stepson, you already would have. For most friends and family members of people with addiction, it’s difficult to set boundaries without outside support.I encourage you to give Al-Anon another shot.I think you’ll find that it actually helps retrieve some of your emotional energy from the sinkhole. It’s great that you went before, but Al-Anon, like Alcoholics Anonymous, is not a program you graduate from. For more information and a list of meetings in your area, visit https://al- anon.org.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! But what happens if the finesse loses?Right — East returns a club, and if West started with five or six of them, the contract goes down.Instead, declarer needs to realize that if the diamond finesse is working, he does not need to take it.At trick two, he should play a diamond to dummy’s ace.In an ideal world, this will drop East’s singleton king. But if his majesty does not appear, South continues diamonds and hopes for the best.
