Book review by Melanie Cutting Quote from the book jacket: “Into a country divided by partisan politics, into a world torn by hatred and war, at a time when it seems that everyone and no one has a solution to the problems that plague humankind, there suddenly appears someone who can rise above the madness, someone with knowledge and power, someone with a finely- tuned sense of the ridiculous—someone, in short who can make it right. And thus we finally have an answer to the long-simmering question, ‘What would Jesus do?’” Wow! How could I NOT read this book?Especially since it was published in 2008, well before Donald Trump had thrown his toupée into the political arena.I discovered it hidden away in the recesses of our RV when we “decamped” earlier this month, but cannot for the life of me recall how it got there.Perhaps, like a Gideon bible, it was quietly placed in the cupboard by a concerned acquaintance when my back was turned, so that I could benefit from its wisdom, spiritually speaking. In any event, I was intrigued.Roland Merullo is certainly not a household name, at least not in this household, but he is the author of Golfing with God and Breakfast with Buddha so it’s pretty easy to “divine” a theme in his writing. And, as it turns out, he is a very good, highly entertaining writer.I’d been expecting something along the religiously comedic lines of works such as 1977’s film “Oh God!”, or 2003’s, “Bruce Almighty” and its less worthy 2007 successor, “Evan Almighty”, but was pleasantly surprised to find Merullo did not overindulge in the clearly comedic aspects of Jesus Christ as politico; which is not to imply that American Savior is not a humourous book, just not one that dwells overly on the funny bits, to the detriment of telling its story about making America– possibly even the world– genuinely great again. As the novel begins, Jesus, for reasons known only to Himself, has selected Russ Thomas (our narrator), a divorced, slightly jaded local TV reporter in western Massachusetts, and asked him to help with his campaign for the presidency. The action of the story is set close to the beginning of one of those endless presidential campaigns that America is so fond of, and thus far, there are only the usual two parties showcasing their less- than-stellar candidates for the highest office in the land.Enter Jesus, who has decided that he can, and will, do better. But first, to capture a little air time, he performs a couple of miracles. When a small child, Dukey McIntyre Jr., falls several floors off a fire escape in one of the poorer sections of town and stops breathing on impact, a mysterious stranger suddenly appears and touches the child on his shoulder, bringing him back to life.Within a few days, miracle number two occurs, this time in a hospital in the affluent community of Wells River.According to the head nurse on a floor devoted to seriously ill people, one of the patients, a little girl with chronic lung disease, Amelia, is visited by the same mysterious stranger, and five minutes later, she is no longer struggling for breath.Needless to say, her parents, the wealthy Norman and Nadine Simmelton, are ecstatic, and eventually become the largest contributors to his campaign when Jesus enters politics, while Dukey’s parents join the campaign as security enforcers. In all, there are 12 volunteers— aka disciples—who hit the Divinity Party campaign trail to help elect Jesus (although you wouldn’t think he’d need all that much help). In addition to the Sim- meltons and Dukey’s parents, there is Russ, who becomes his head of security, Russ’s fiancée Zelda and his boss, Paterson Wales, as well as his parents, Arnie (Jewish) and Mudgie (Catholic) and his intellectually challenged brother Stab, who quickly forms a special bond with the candidate.Although the road to the presidency is not as smooth as you might expect for the son of God, Jesus refuses to resort to supernatural acts to win votes. As it turns out, he is a pretty persuasive guy just being himself, and he clearly has a way with both words and people.Even Arnie, not a big fan of Christianity, discards his long-held animosity to help “the rabbi” get elected.Candidate Jesus has returned to earth as a young, handsome man.So handsome, in fact, that Russ occasionally finds himself, against all reason, feeling pangs of jealousy when he spots Jesus alone with Zelda.Oh, and he also surfs.Like a pro.Eventually, we learn Jesus’ back story and why he has the disconcerting habit of periodically disappearing or putting himself in harm’s way, causing his supporters to cringe with worry.Merullo resists the urge to use his subject matter to preach; instead, he concentrates his efforts on telling an entertaining story, highlighting the evolving relationships among Jesus and his supporters, the rigors of a long campaign, and the venal and often banal nature of politicians at every level.Without hitting you over the head with it, this is a morality tale in disguise. As Russ says, “Inside all of us, there had been this secret hope that one day we would have a leader who actually understood our problems, someone who was not ambitious, and not conniving and not divisive, and not partisan, and not out to help his friends line their pockets, whose good intentions were not corrupted by foolish philosophies or personal weakness.” Having recently slogged through a VERY long novel, I found this one refreshing, thought-provoking, and well worth a read, even if it does deal with politics, a subject many of us could happily do without at this point.I certainly agree that, as the book jacket notes, it is “By turns amusing and heartbreaking, affirmative and disturbing… a passionate and penetrating look at the America that is and the America that could be.” Available soon at the Lennoxville Library.Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , September 21, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: RAIN HIGH 19 LOW 10 SATURDAY: SUNNY HIGH 16 LOW 4 SUNDAY: SUNNY HIGH 16 LOW 1 MONDAY: SUNNY HIGH 13 LOW -1 TUESDAY: SUNNY HIGH 18 LOW 9 The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week.Wherever you are.Access the full edition of the Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and 30 days of archives.Renew or order a new 12- month print subscription and get a 12-month online subscription for an additional $5 or purchase the online edition only for $82.21.Record subscription rates (includes Quebec taxes) 1 year print: $178.21 6 month print: $97.73 3 month print: $50.59 12 month web only: $125.00 1 month web only: $11.25 Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3: 1.Visit the Record website: www.sherbrookerecord.com 2.Click e-edition.3.Complete the form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.GO O D RE A D S Lennoxville library American Savior: A Novel of Divine Politics - By Roland Merullo CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 “Econoline” type minivan around Fougères, Maple, and Academy Streets in Sutton. The SQ is also looking for a white male wearing black clothing along with a white shirt and shoes, thought to be an important witness. He was spotted Wednesday at 9 a.m.at a Tim Horton’s on Knowlton Street in Lac Brome. The SQ is also on the lookout for a second vehicle, a pale Dodge Caravan, most likely grey, spotted around 7 a.m.and 1 p.m.on local security tapes. The SQ has asked that anyone who recognizes the individuals described or anyone with additional information should call the Centrale de l’information criminelle de la Sûreté du Québec at 1-800-659-4264.Friday , September 21, 2018 Page 3 The Society stressed that recipients recipients of the email should not make the payment.LOCAL NEWS The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Heath Orchard Ecological Apples Hours: Daily 9-5 Apples Pottery & more Now open 4950 ch.Heath Stanstead, Quebec (6 km north of Stanstead, off Rte.143) (819) 876-2817 info@vergerheathorchard.com For up-to-date info visit: www.vergerheathorchard.com Tomatoes galore! t l r ! Page 4 Friday , September 21, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Candidates talk social issues to coalition Record Staff Solidarité populaire Estrie hosted a debate Wednesday in Estrie on social issues among candidates as part of the 2018 provincial elections. The debate was held in the Salle Le Parvis.Discussions focused on health, education, social inclusion, the environment, and taxation.Around 150 people attended. The debate was organized with the aim of providing a dynamic space for the Estrie population to provide an opportunity for them to learn more about the platforms of the main political parties and the social issues that concern them.Four candidates showed up to defend their party’s policies, André Bachand, candidate in Richmond for Coalition Avenir Québec, Annie Godbout, candidate in Richmond for the Liberal Party of Quebec, Christine Labrie, candidate in Sherbrooke for Quebec Solidaire, and Guillaume Rousseau, candidate in Sherbrooke for the Parti Québécois,.For the SPE the event served its purpose as the candidates led a heated debate, particularly on health and public services issues. The two questions from members of the public, randomly selected, focused on the funding of community organizations and relations with Aboriginal peoples. This debate helped citizens to learn more about party programs. The expectations of the organizers and the population were met.During the debate, the candidates asked each other questions, which allowed them to clarify their specific commitments for the ridings of Sherbrooke and Richmond."Solidarité populaire Estrie will closely monitor the outcome of the elections and will continue to be there to work for a more just and equal society,” said Jimmy Forgues, Solidarité populaire Estrie coordinator.Solidarité populaire Estrie is a coalition of labor, popular, community, feminist, environmentalist, religious, student, and international solidarity organizations from the region. As a collective advocacy organization, SPE promotes and defends the economic, social and cultural interests of the people of Estrie with the goal of greater social and fiscal justice.Centraide Estrie fundraising aims for $1,655,000 Record Staff Under the theme ‘Act HERE, with heart.‘, the president of the annual Centraide Estrie fundraising campaign and director of the Domtar mill in Windsor, Eric Ashby launched the 43rd edition of the campaign Tuesday afternoon with the goal of raising $1,655,000 for the charity. At a press conference, Ashby, who is performing his role as head of the campaign for a third year, took the opportunity to reiterate the importance of being generous to the vulnerable and poor in the region: "Today, I want to tell you how important it is to give to Centraide Estrie to help young people who have difficulty persevering in school, help feed those who can’t afford to feed themselves, help people with disabilities to be more self- reliant, and break the isolation of seniors, because they deserve better." Encouraged by the increased results obtained in 2017, Yves Jodoin, Centraide Estrie Chairman, thanked the donors, but also the many volunteers behind the campaign."Centraide can count on the mobilization more than a thousand people who volunteer in more than 225 workplaces to raise donations, and I want to take this opportunity to invite all other individuals and businesses who would also like to contribute to contact us, so that we can make a difference with their desire to engage socially with the most vulnerable and disadvantaged," he said.Centraide Estrie is involved in four fields of activity: those aimed at supporting the success of young people, ensuring essentials, breaking social isolation, and building supportive environments.By donating to Centraide Estrie, contributors make a difference, because not only do donations stay here in Estrie, but they make it possible to take care of people in Estrie, commented General Manager Marie-Hélène Wolfe. The study "Les impacts sociaux de Centraide Estrie” (Social Impacts of the United Way in the Eastern Townships), published last summer, confirmed that Centraide Estrie plays a fundamental role in the fight against poverty and social exclusion, through the 68 organizations that it supports financially. Tuesday, Sept.18, to approve an agreement to merge the institutions.More than 150 people attended the special General Assembly to merge the two, which will now be known as the Caisse Desjardins du Nord de Sherbrooke. The project will be submitted to the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) for approval in the coming weeks.Once this stage has been completed, the Greater Sherbrooke area will be home, as of January 1, one of the largest branches in the entire Desjardins network. It will have more than 62,000 members, over $4 billion in assets and nearly 200 employees. In the aftermath of the union, members will have access to 5 service centers and 4 self-service centers. At the Annual General Meeting last April, members were informed of the proposed amalgamation and from then on, the managers of the two caisses have been working to ensure the maintenance of jobs and the creation of a more attractive organization for employees in an environment favorable to the development and the mobilization of resources.Desjardins said that members will now have greater access and uniformity of supply in all service centers As with the community, the pooling of human, financial, and material resources constitutes important economies of scale and a greater flexibility to support community, social and educational development.Desjardins Group is the largest cooperative financial group in Thibault New poll gives Liberals 7-point lead Record Staff ACROP poll released Thursday on Quebecers’ voting intentions shows the Liberal Party (PLQ) in the lead for the first time ,11 days from the general election. The CROP survey carried out from September 12 to 17 for Cogeco Media, gives the PLQ 37 per cent of the vote, compared to 30 per cent to the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), after distribution of undecided respondents. The Parti Québécois (PQ) came in third, with 16 per cent of the vote, ahead of Québec solidaire, at 14 per cent.A CROP survey published August 23 gave the CAQ the lead with 38 percent of the voting intentions, two points ahead of the PLQ.A comparison of the two surveys reveals that in less than two months, CAQ support has dropped by eight points and that the PLQ has gained one.The Parti Québécois and Québec solidaire increased their support by one and four per cent, respectively.CROP observed that despite its decline, the CAQ still leads among Francophones with one-third of the vote, which is an asset in winning ridings on the day of the vote. When asked "Who would make the best premier?", Liberal leader Philippe Couillard leads CAQ leader François Legault, with 28 per cent support compared to 24 per cent.To conduct the survey, CROP collected 1,000 questionnaires filled out by Que- becers aged 18 and over. The results were weighted to reflect the distribution of the study population by sex, age, region of residence, mother tongue, and education level of the respondents.Given the non-probability nature of the sample, a calculation sea levels there could rise by a metre over the next century. The warning was based in part on U.S.Geological Survey findings that “sea level rise along the portion of the East Coast between North Carolina and Massachusetts is accelerating at three to four times the global rate” and that sea level in the region “would rise up to 11.4 inches higher than the global average rise by the end of the 21st century,” according to ABC News.It was meant to help the state prepare its long, wide, low-lying coast for the kinds of severe occurrences that are becoming increasingly common as climate change ramps up.But developers and others complained the forecasts could hurt property values and increase insurance costs.Politicians came up with a novel “solution.” They passed a law banning policies based on the forecasts.Under the law, predictions can be for 30 years at most and must be based on historical data about sea level rise. This ignores mountains of scientific evidence about global warming and its consequences, including the fact that sea level rise is accelerating as ever-in- creasing greenhouse gas emissions drive global average temperatures higher. The law allowed developers and government to continue building homes, buildings, roads and bridges along the coast, oblivious to threats outlined by people who study climate and oceans.Whether heeding the warnings would have mitigated the devastation and tragedy from Hurricane Florence depends in part on actions government might have taken. But refusing to accept scientific evidence for the sake of short- term profits, although all too common, isn’t the way to protect citizens and property. The Coastal Resources Commission released a more modest warning in 2015, concluding sea level rise could be 15 to 20 centimetres over 30 years — less than other research predicts.North Car- olinians also elected a governor last year who accepts the reality of climate change and has committed to taking action. But so far, not enough has been done to safeguard the vulnerable coastline from sea level increases or storm surges exacerbated by climate change. As meteorologist Eric Holthaus explains in the Washington Post, “A warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor — producing heavier downpours and providing more energy to hurricanes, boosting their destructive potential.” The notion that storms and other weather events will follow predictable historical patterns is being shattered by record climate-related storms, droughts, floods and heatwaves worldwide. The tragedy so many are facing, from loss of homes to loss of lives and livelihoods, is compounded by the fact that much of it is or was preventable.Employing solutions while continuing to develop new knowledge and technologies in everything from agriculture to renewable energy would create good jobs and economic gains, while protecting human health and well-being and the very life-support systems that keep us alive and well. Many in the U.S.understand this. While the federal government rolls back environmental laws and protections, “more than 3,000 U.S.cities, states, businesses, investors, counties, regional associations, faith communities, and post-secondary institutions are on track to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 17% — and possibly by as much as 24% [by 2025], bringing the country close to meeting its promised target under the Paris Agreement,” an Energy Mix article states. Those reductions depend on how well signatories to Bloomberg Philanthropies’ America’s Pledge keep their commitments on a range of goals regarding renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, carbon pricing, carbon sequestration strategies and preventing methane leaks. But the benefits of doing so go beyond ensuring our survival and well-being — though that should be enough! A study by C40 Cities, the Global Covenant of Mayors and the NewCli- mate Institute concluded, “Cities around the world could create 13.7 million jobs and prevent 1.3 million premature deaths per year by 2030 by pursuing ‘ambitious urban climate policies’ that ‘vastly reduce carbon emissions globally,’” Energy Mix reports. As our thoughts and hopes are with the people of the U.S.East Coast, the Philippines and other places caught in terrifying weather, we must remember that we’re all in the storm now.Our way to safety is also our way to a brighter future.David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation.Written with contributions from David Suzuki Foundation Senior Editor Ian Hanington.Learn more at www.davidsuzuki.org.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , September 21, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record But so far, not enough has been done to safeguard the vulnerable coastline from sea level increases or storm surges exacerbated by climate change. We must heed storm warnings to build a brighter future 6 Mallory, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1M 2E2 FAX: 819-821-3179 E-MAIL: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com WEBSITE: www.sherbrookerecord.com SHARON MCCULLY PUBLISHER .(819) 569-9511 MATTHEW MCCULLY ASSOCIATE EDITOR (819) 569-6345 GORDON LAMBIE ASSOCIATE EDITOR .(819) 569-6345 STEPHEN BLAKE CORRESP.EDITOR .(819) 569-6345 SERGE GAGNON CHIEF PRESSMAN .(819) 569-4856 JESSE BRYANT ADVERTISING MANAGER .(450) 242-1188 DEPARTMENTS ACCOUNTING .(819) 569-9511 ADVERTISING .(819) 569-9525 CIRCULATION .(819) 569-9528 NEWSROOM .(819) 569-6345 KNOWLTON OFFICE 5B VICTORIA STREET, KNOWLTON, QUEBEC, J0E 1V0 TEL: (450) 242-1188 FAX: (450) 243-5155 PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS GST PST T O T A L QUEBEC: 1 YEAR 155.00 7.75 15.46 $ 1 7 8 .2 1 6 MONTHS 85.00 4.25 8.48 $ 9 7 .7 3 3 MONTHS 44.00 2.20 4.39 $ 5 0 .5 9 ON-LINE SUBSCRIPTIONS QUEBEC: 1 YEAR 108.72 5.44 10.85 $ 1 2 5 .0 0 1 MONTH 9.78 0.49 0.98 $ 1 1 .2 5 Rates for out of Quebec and for other services available on request. The Record is published daily Monday to Friday.Back copies of The Record are available. The Record was founded on February 9, 1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.PM#0040007682 Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to The Record, 6 Mallory Street, Sherbrooke, QC J1M 2E2 Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA RECORD THE Science matters Woman’s impaired driving conviction thrown out Record Staff ASherbrooke woman has convinced an appellate court to acquit her of a charge of impaired driving. The 37-year-old had her conviction thrown out this week following a decision by Judge Charles Ouellet of the Superior Court. The woman’s Legal Aid lawyer convinced the court that there was no evidence that the drug GHB was present when her client was driving and when impaired symptoms were noted. In his decision, Judge Ouellet said that "It is impossible to infer that the drug was ingested before 11:30 a.m.when the appellant stopped driving the vehicle (.) Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) Our word for today, “Priority,” sounds important and meaningful.I certainly heard if often enough on Monday night in the English Language debate prior to the vote for Premier of Quebec. Each party leader tried to explain their priorities was more significant than those of their opponents.Voices were often raised in anger. It all sounded very complicated to me.Maybe we need to simplify things.I own a rainbow T-shirt that I love to wear in the summer. On the front it says “Love thy neighbour” and follows that statement on the back with a list: thy homeless neighbour, thy Muslim neighbour, thy Black neighbour, thy addicted neighbour, thy Christian neighbour, thy refugee neighbour, thy atheist neighbour and so on.People sometimes stop me, and remark how much they like it.I have also been at many meetings lately where our changing future is discussed and the word “Priorities” is the topic of conversation.Sometimes there have been diatribes where individuals share their view that the things they care the most about should automatically be the priorities of everyone else: how to spend the money, who should be in charge, what traditions should we keep, what music should be used in worship, even what colour should we paint the nursery.I am sometimes tempted when I hear anxious and angry voice in these debates to simply go to the front, show my rainbow T- shirt, and say “Love Thy Neighbour”.When we are able to live out that commandment, I feel we have our priorities in the right place.2) Have you noticed lately how often our attention is diverted from what we set out to do, by an unending series of beeps, tweets and rings? We get weather watches for Sherbrooke, breaking news in China or how many people commented on someone else’s new haircut. If we paid attention to it all we would never get any work done.According to a recent interview on The Sunday Edition (CBC radio), we can’t stop checking our cellphones because Silicon Valley designed it that way.Social media platforms like Facebook and SnapChat are programmed to grab our attention for as many of our waking hours as possible. It’s called "persuasive technology." But while we are spending hours bent over our phones, being entertained or becoming more informed or being a voyeur in some else’s life, OUR lives are passing us by.On the days I manage to keep my attention on the tasks before me I often find myself prioritizing my tasks by level of urgency.I spend a lot of time firefighting. When I actually sit down to think about the things I value most in life: my relationships, my spiritual well-being, my physical health, I often find that these are the things that I spend the least amount of time on.After all they can always be done tomorrow.A wise friend once told me I should schedule in regular pauses in my day, pauses to reflect back on what just happened, pauses to prepare for the next activity and pauses to just be, with no agenda at all.I wonder how our world might look if we all turned off our phones for 2 hours a day and reoriented our priorities, by directing our attention to the things we considered important but not urgent in our lives.I for one would be happier in my relationships, healthier in my body and nourished in my spirit. How about you?3) September is the Monday of the months.Students go back to school.Programs that took a hiatus for the summer start back up again.Every group or organization that you belong to has a meeting. For me, September feels like a marathon. What takes priority is often just the thing that is right before me, as I prepare for the next event or meeting in the hour or so before it happens. And, then, I am reminded of the real priorities. In the middle of two busy days this week I had phone calls to meet my elderly mother in the emergency department, where she had gone by ambulance. She had a fall and her ongoing heart problems had flared up.While meetings happened without me I sat by her bedside, answering the medical questions that she could not answer, and keeping her company.Whether it was the intimacy created by these days together, or whether it was the powerful pain medication they gave her, we will never know, but during the second trip to the hospital the conversation turned serious. My mother talked about the regrets of her life and her biggest disappointments. She talked about her joys and accomplishments. She decided that, overall, life had been pretty terrific.I was late for an important meeting that I was supposed to chair.I disappointed and let down a few people who were expecting me to do things this week that did not get done. But I have no regrets about the priority that I chose.4) We sported walking sticks, he because of balance problems; I'd sprained an ankle a week before our departure.Throughout the journey we were surprised by the kindness of strangers, shuffled to the front of lines, given priority seating. At the airport a cart pulled up to whisk us through security and off to our gate, with no prior arrangement and no questions asked.Whatever country we were in, people made way for us, stepped up or aside or offered a supportive arm.Once we were wordlessly given a pass to go to the front of a long line of what seemed like hundreds patiently waiting their turn to board. We didn't ask for priority treatment, and no one complained, yet we'd have rather been able to wait at the end of the line, anything to avoid calling attention to ourselves. We'll never forget a couple from Australia who guided us through the palace ruins at Kronos. At the start the somewhat uneven terrain appeared navigable if we took it slow. But by the time we crested a plateau and realized that the way ahead was far more precarious, there was no turning back.A woman appeared at my side and told me her husband had mine by the arm.Slowly we made our way together, and we traded life stories. When we recall our experiences, their kindness takes priority. It was the trip of a lifetime ~ but totally for pleasure! Since then I've thought: what if we'd just come off a flimsy flotilla on the crowded isle of Lesvos?Hungry, terrified, with only the clothes on our backs, soaked to the skin.Leaving home and relatives and everything behind, facing the unknown dependent upon the kindness of strangers - that's another kind of trip of a lifetime! In extraordinary times our priorities should change to meet the circumstances. These are now extraordinary times. On a global scale, what comes first as we order our world and make decisions of where to put our time, money, resources and care will depend upon our core values and define for all time who we really are.One word, four voices - now it's your turn to reflect: How do you decide what takes priority for you?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Water- ville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dillabough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco is Consulting Minister to UU Estrie-Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley. Page 8 Friday , September 21, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record PQ- Veronique Vignault Vignault presented herself as the option for people who want a serious candidate who isn’t a career politician.A special educator turned entrepreneur counselor, the candidate said that her professional focus has always been on helping make people’s dreams become a reality “Politics, for me, is about service,” she said, explaining that she wants to be a voice for the voiceless in the community.Vignault has made a point of saying that she wants prioritize encouraging participatory democracy in the riding and engaging in politics in a people-centered way.She aligns herself with the Parti- Quebecois because, she says, it is the only party with a project for the future of all Quebec at heart that is both progressive and realistic. When it comes to the challenges facing the Richmond riding, Vignault said that the majority are a byproduct of the regions being misrepresented at the National Assembly.“We’re making decisions based on what is happening in large cities,” she said, calling the need for a louder voice of representation from rural communities one of the major concerns overall The PQ candidate also called the general situation of the environment alarming, while also saying that there is work to be done in the fields of agriculture, education, the workforce shortage, and telephone and internet connectivity.Looking to the question of Language, Vignault said that she wants to reduce inequalities in the riding.“If we are going to become all that we are capable of becoming, it can only be achieved through our diversity,” she said, explaining that she would like to bring people together through what they have in common rather than focus on differences. She added, however, that there are important benefits to learning from each other.“I think it is important in this day and age for all Quebecers to be able to speak English, but I also think it is important for all Quebec Anglophones to speak French.QS – Colombe Landry A social worker by profession, Landry said that she is trained to listen and respond to the needs of those around her, a skill set she views as a natural fit for someone in public office.“I want to work with, and not just for, the people of this riding,” she said.Asked about the issues facing the riding, Landry did not hesitate for a second in saying that the environment is right at the top of the pile.“As it is for the rest of the world,” she added, noting that people having been saying that climate change is coming for decades and saying that the weather we have had in 2018 is proof that looking after the world needs to be a serious priority moving forward. As an example, the candidate said that municipalities have limited power to protect their drinking water right now and face a world where commercial enterprises can sue them over water use.Landry also argued in favour of better sustainable mass transit measures in the riding, whether in the form of more bussing in urban areas, or better intermunic- ipal travel in the rural communities.“And more electric transportation,” she added, arguing that if Quebec is going to stand behind its hydroelectric capacity as a point of pride, it should be showing that in the way its people move from place to place.Asked about the English population, Landry talked about the reform of the healthcare system under Gaetan Barrette calling it “the worst of the worst” reforms she has seen in a career spent working in CLSCs in the area.Cuts in the system, she said, have led to cuts in services, and those service cuts mean an impact on the English population.Turning that reform around by bringing the community back into the decision making process, she said, is an essential part of making the situation better. On priorities if elected, Landry said that the province needs to start paying down the “massive environmental debt” that has been left to future generations.CAQ – André Bachand When asked why people should vote for him, Bachand highlighted his position as the most experienced politician running in the Richmond riding. He pointed to experience at the Municipal, Provincial and Federal levels as well as jobs representing and working for governments here and abroad as a sign that he is well connected and knows what he is doing in the political sphere. He added, later in the interview, that he is a staunch federalist.“The good news is that the nationalist question is off the table, so for the first time people are free to choose,” the CAQ candidate said, calling this election a “historic opportunity” to consider issues facing Quebec beyond the idea of separation from Canada.Although Bachand said that he knows there are a large number of issues that need to be dealt with in his riding, he identified the task of attracting and keeping new members of the workforce as a major hurdle to overcome. That problem, he said, manifests in different ways across the riding. In Valcourt it is a need for better mass transit for out of town workers, in Richmond it is a housing shortage, and in Asbestos it is a lack of labourers, but at its core the problem is the same.Asked about the local English speaking population Bachand, who was the only candidate to conduct the interview entirely in English, said that Anglophones are impacted by the same overall issues as the rest of the population.Rather than speak to what he would do for English speakers specifically, he encouraged local Anglophones to keep their options open when it comes to casting their votes. With regard to his priorities, Bachand said that anyone who has been elected before knows that, realistically, priority number one has to be getting a riding office up and running and getting organized.Although he clarified that he would soon get back to the people he spoke to during the campaign to reaffirm his positions and check back in on their concerns, he underlined that the reality of the situation is that no decision making happens until the riding office gets up and running.Liberal - Annie Godbout Godbout, who was elected to her second term on Sherbrooke’s city council in November, said that her understanding of the political sphere and her experience dealing with difficult and complex files gives her a good grounding as a candidate for the Liberal Party.“I know what I have to do,” she said, calling herself a “people person.” The candidate said that she identifies with the PLQ because of their values and strong program.Speaking to the challenges of her region, Godbout pointed out that the labour shortage being faced by Richmond and other parts of the province is about more than just jobs.Instead of just talking about workers, she framed the conversation in terms of community vitality, pointing out that when local businesses flourish that has a positive impact on other aspects of community life like schools and local engagement.Every community, she said, has its own obstacles to overcome, but the overall issue surrounding the workforce puts the sense of community that is so central to life in the Townships at risk.Godbout shared a particular sensitivity to the concerns of English speakers in her riding, explaining that through her work as President of the City of Sherbrooke’s intercultural committee she had been made much more aware of the way that the lack of services in ones mother tongue can impact a minority language community.“You need to have that awareness,” the candidate said, explaining that she feels it is a failure to tune into the particular needs of the English speaking communities across the province that has lead to a devaluing of English culture in the province.Regarding her priorities if elected, Godbout said that it is essential that access to high speed internet and decent cellular telephone coverage be established in the region as soon as possible.Green – Yves La Madelaine La Madelaine turned to his experience with the Val-Saint-Fran- cois action committee and implication with several local community organizations over the recent years when asked what makes him the best candidate for the riding.Although he acknowledged that the Green Party has historically been tied very closely to matters of the environment, he said that the party’s platform has broadened in this election to be “almost identical to the others,” speaking to concerns relating to the fields of healthcare and education as well.“I am very involved when it comes to the environment,” the Green Party candidate, going on to say that the main area of concern in the riding is caring for the Earth. He stated that measures to combat climate change currently occupy a fraction of a percent of the provincial budget and argued that it is time for the provincial government to take more steps to protect the planet On the subject of the local English speaking population, the Green Party candidate said that his party has a very inclusive platform and that he considers the English speaking population to be his “brothers and sisters” even if he does not speak very much English himself.La Madelaine said that his priority if elected would be to launch into the large-scale issues of healthcare reform and reducing the cost of medication in Quebec.Provincial elections 2018 - Richmond The Richmond riding naturally includes the town of Richmond, but also reaches west to Valcourt, North to Danville, East to Ham-Sud and South to include much of the Rock Forest Borough of Sherbrooke. The riding also includes the municipalities of Maricourt, Racine, Saint-Denis-de-Brompton, Ulver- ton, Melbourne, Kingsbury, Saint- Francois-Xavier-de-Brompton, Windsor, Val-Joli, Cleveland, Saint- Claude, Asbestos, Wotton, Sainte- Camille, and Saint-Adiren.The returning officer is Mario Caron and there are electoral offices located on rue du Haut-Bois South in Sherbrooke and on Daniel-Johnson Road in Danville.Either office can be reached by calling 819-238-2342 or, toll free, 1-855-338-2342.The member of the National Assembly for the riding has been Liberal Karine Vallières, who took over for her father Yvon Vallières in 2012.She announced her departure from provincial politics earlier this year citing a desire to spend more time with her teenage daughters. The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , September 21, 2018 Page 9 Day of action against sexual violence against women: “It's up to Me’ Record Staff The 37th Day of Action against Violence and Sexual Assault on Women will take place Friday, Sept.21.The Quebec group of Centers for Support and the Fight Against sexual violence (RQCALACS) and its members will mark the occasion by launching its “This Concerns Me” campaign.Last fall, Quebec was hit by a wave of whistleblowing, particularly through use of the hashtag #MoiAussi (#MeToo) on which survivors testified about sexual abuse. From now on, it is no longer possible to deny or even remain silent about the magnitude of this plague on society. Now that victims have more room to express their experiences, it is time for the public to be more vigilent in the fight against sexual violence in order to obtain a real radical change in our culture.CALACS is sending a clear message to Quebecers: In the fight against sexual violence, #YouToo also has a role to play. With its new campaign, CALACS wants to mobilize the public to get involved and take action in the fight against sexual violence, because sexual assault is a social problem and concerns everyone. The commitment to fight sexual violence also involves taking into account women who live in precarious situations and are vulnerable. This makes them more likely to experience sexual assault.Examples include new immigrant women, those with physical or mental limitations, those who do not identify with gender norms, or women in prostitution. Those women will likely live in marginalization, whether it is with difficulty accessing support services or being treated with a lack of respect. Those social problems constitute collateral damage and an accumulation of exclusion within population. To mark the Day of Action against Sexual Violence against Women, a gathering will be held today, Sept.21, at 6:30 p.m.departing from the Marché de la Gare at Lac des Nations, with Special Guest, actor Émile Proulx.Montréal - Sherbrooke Bike Tour proposal backed by three regional Tourism agencies Record Staff Tourisme Cantons-de-l'Est and Tourisme Montréal are continuing their collaboration to intensify inter-regional relations. They have been joined by Tourisme Montérégie in the development of a new cycling tourism program. The project aims to raise the profile of the Montreal - Sherbrooke bicycle tour via Green Route.Stakeholders will work closely on developing a concept with strong tourism potential. In order to establish the route and develop partnerships throughout its course, a group of 15 people in the cycling and tourism sectors did a cycling tour along Green Route # 1, which will end today, Sept.21.In addition to pedaling between 55 and 65 km per day, the group ended their days by discussing their observations in the field and participating in workshops with local stakeholders, with the aim of structuring the Montreal - Sherbrooke cycling route."I look forward to sharing this bike touring experience with the partners, most of it on a bike path.Traversing these three regions by bike will allow us to discover exceptional urban, rural, and forest landscapes and to meet people who will be happy to welcome us and help us learn about their corner of the country and their local offerings,” said Tourisme Cantons-de-l'Est Bike Projects manager Lucie Lanteigne. The tour group travelled from Montreal to Saint-Jean sur Richelieu (56 km)Tuesday, from Saint-Jean-sur-Riche- lieu to Granby (55 km) on Wednesday, from Granby to Orford (65 km) on Thursday, and Orford to Sherbrooke (67 km) on Friday, scheduled to arrive at the Grand Times Hotel de Sherbrooke at 3 p.m. Kévin Côté-Québec Solidaire “We are the only party that makes the environment a priority,” Côté said, explaining that the party wants to get started immediately on policies to curb pollution. He added that the party’s environmental approach would also have a positive economic impact.Through policies to encourage buying local products, Côté said producers in the region could benefit, and products wouldn’t have to be shipped from one side of the planet to the other. When asked what the major issues in the riding were, Côté said education and a focus on improving and enlarging local schools. He also discussed the importance of keeping small schools in villages open, which he said would contribute to the vitality of the region in the long run.According to Côté, there is a higher level of poverty as well as a higher dropout rate among the Anglophone population in the Saint- François riding.Policies like increasing minimum wage to $15 and offering free dental care are province-wide measures to address poverty and the needs of low-income families, and would benefit Anglophones in the region as well.If elected, Côté said his first priority would be to meet with community organizations, which he considers the front line for prevention to alleviate the overburdened health care system. He added that providing low cost public transportation would be a focus at the beginning of his mandate.Geneviève Hébert- Coalition Avenir Québec According to Hébert, the CAQ is all about listening to the needs of people, and de-centralizing power, especially in the domains of health care and education.Hébert explained that there is no single ‘one size fits all’ model for government, and she and her party would make an effort to respond to the realities of different regions.Education, the economy and health care are the main issues that need to be addressed in the riding, Hébert said. She said investments were necessary to make up for education cuts in recent years and improve schools and value employees.Addressing the labour force shortage through immigration and education programs would help meet the needs of the region, she added.Bringing approaches to healthcare and the economy back to the human level rather that a business model would, according to Hébert, best serve the riding. When asked how she would address the needs of Anglophones in the region, Hébert said recurrent funding for support organizations like community Aid helps break isolation and keep the community connected. She added that supporting Bishop’s and Champlain and school programs like Con- comittance were ways to encourage the English population to thrive in the region. If elected, Hébert said her first priority would be seniors and health; to work towards more CHSLD beds, more family doctors, services at home. She added that she would make sure Saint- François gets its piece of the pie.Page 10 Friday , September 21, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Provincial elections 2018- Saint-François By Matthew McCully The current Member of the National Assembly (MNA) representing the Saint François riding is Liberal Party member Guy Hardy. He is not running for reelection.Since 2003, the riding has been Liberal, with the Parti Québécois coming in second with the exception of 2012, when there was a two-year period where the PQ won the riding. The Record asked the candidates of the riding four questions: 1) Why should voters choose you and your party in the upcoming provincial election?2) What are the biggest issues currently by the population in your region?3) How do you plan to represent the needs of Anglophones?4) If elected, what would be your main priority as you begin your mandate?Green party candidate Mathieu Morin did not reply to a request for an interview by press time.Cyrille McElreavy-Citoyens au Pouvoir du Quebec McElreavy said that politicians should serve a term of four years and then move on.His party’s platform is to eliminate corruption by means of direct democracy.Giving the power back to the people is McElreavy’s main concern. He used the example of the director of the Sûreté du Québec, which he believes should be elected, rather than appointed, to eliminate the possibility of a conflict of interest.According to McElreavy, the needs of the Anglophone population are no different that French speakers, and said there was nothing particular he would do to meet their specific needs. His first priority, if elected, would be to write a constitution for Quebec.Charles Poulin- Parti Liberal du Quebec “I’m committed to listening to the needs of the community,” Poulin said.“I knocked on 5,000 doors, I heard the concerns of the citizens.” Among the concerns he heard, the main one, according to Poulin, was the labour shortage in the area.He mentioned a four-part plan to address it; Education to keep more youth in the area, immigration policies to bring qualified candidates to fill positions in the riding, innovative programs in schools to stay competitive, and the integration of people on social assistance into the job market through modified benefits and education programs. He added that offering an incentive of a tax break on the first $30,000 of income for workers over 65 would keep experienced people in the workforce for longer.Poulin said he would meet the needs of Anglophones in two ways; by working towards having more bilingual services available through an intensive English program for French Grade 5 and 6 students, , and more English technical programs so that Anglophones won’t leave the province to study and then get work while there instead of coming back.If elected, Poulin said his first priority would be to gather local stakeholders and work on the plan to open a new farm/school at the CIARC in Coaticook.According to Poulin, the new school would mean skilled workers in the agricultural sector, which would help the local industry prosper. He added that his other priorities would not fall to the wayside.“I will drive them all side by side,” Poulin said.Solange Masson- Parti Québécois Masson said her party was all about people.Working towards de-centralizing services and supporting the many different municipalities in the riding would be her plan to strengthen the region. When asked about the major issues in the riding, Masson said that in urban centres, working conditions of health care employees was a major consideration; in rural parts of the riding, the current labour shortage was an issue , pointing to the agricultural sector.Masson sees no distinction between the French and English communities.“They need CHSLDs, they need space in day- cares, they need family doctors,” she said, explaining that regardless of the language, the needs of the two communities were the same. Her main priority, if elected, would be to begin to return the power that had been taken away from the health care system.Pointing to her two offices for her campaign, she explained that as an MNA she would try to maintain as large a presence in the territory as possible, to understand the challenges of the different municipalities and push for needed resources everywhere, not just in Sherbrooke.A map of the municipalities in the riding of Saint-François The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , September 21, 2018 Page 11 Magog lays out expectations for next government Record Staff As the provincial election on Oct.1 approaches, Mayor Vicki-May Hamm has taken steps to inform the candidates running in Orford of the development priorities of the city of Magog in an attempt to clarify her concerns and expectations for the next provincial government.Hamm explained that "since the adoption of Bill 122 in June 2017, we have greater autonomy. However, the fiscal imbalance is still relevant since the revenues of municipalities come mostly from property taxes. We have therefore prepared a list of topics on which we want to inform the candidates so that they have all the information necessary to represent our region in the next government." The city’s wish-list includes the Omerville wastewater treatment plant, one of the major strategic projects of the 2019-2021 three-year investment program. The current plant no longer meets standards, which hinders the real estate development of the sector. For various reasons, the project is not eligible for current grant programs. The City hopes that new criteria will be applied to allow the modernization and enlargement of the plant’s water treatment capacity treatment to be eligible for subsidies.Because much of the area of the industrial park is in a wet environment, The City wants the government to review its strategy on wetland management and associated offsets.Rules regarding the operation of these sites and methods of compensation have been modified and reduce the possibilities of making new land in the industrial park available to companies at a competitive price. At the annual convention of the Union of Quebec Municipalities (UMQ), the leaders of all political parties committed to transferring 1 per cent of the QST to municipalities.Magog hopes this promise will be kept.In addition, the City of Magog, as well as all Quebec municipalities, are demanding the payment of property taxes from government buildings that benefit from exemptions (hospitals, schools, etc.) as well as the full refund of Québec sales tax paid by municipalities.Magog also hopes that its two-ice arena project will be considered a priority when the new grant program is launched. The City instigated a rail service project several months ago to facilitate the transportation of goods from companies located in the industrial park and to encourage new ones to move here.Several initiatives were undertaken, in partnership with the various municipalities on the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu / Sherbrooke axis, to improve rail service deemed less expensive than other means of transportation. The municipality wants a financial contribution from the federal and provincial governments for the repair of the rails and the construction of a rail service in the Magog industrial park.A group of citizens and elected representatives from the Memphremagog MRC has mobilized to highlight the importance of maintaining the diversity and quality of health services in the MRC.City Council is encouraging the initiative and wants to bring those demands to the attention of the candidates. In addition, council members strongly agree with the committee's main request to bring back local governance. The government is committed to providing royalties to municipalities in connection with the sale of cannabis. The City wants assurance that these commitments are respected. The city of Magog holds the status of a recreational tourism town.Like other Quebec municipalities with this title, no financial contribution is made to offset the increased use of infrastructure during the tourist season. The municipal council wants a subsidy to be granted to cities classified as recreational tourism towns since they do not get any direct income from this and have to pay to maintain adequate infrastructures. As is the case with most Québec cities, much municipal infrastructure is at the end of its useful life and Magog wants the government to be a key player in municipal infrastructure investments (water and sewer systems, streets, etc.) and accelerate access to the infrastructure grant program. For the moment, the agreement is signed, but no projects can be submitted. As the principal city in the Memphré- magog MRC,, Magog has to assume a large portion of the operating costs of the Memphrémagog Police Board. This situation creates a budget deficit compared to cities served by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) since the costs of the force are mainly borne by the provincial government.Magog wants the government to come up with solutions to close the gap.Magog wants to improve the flow of traffic at Exit 118 on Highway 10 by reorganizing the access ramps. The city is asking for collaboration and investments from the Ministry of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Electrification to modify the configuration of this motorway exit, which is one of the main entrances to the town. TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture September 21 - September 27, 2018 Dominique Valade on display at Sherbrooke art museum Record Staff The Sherbrooke Fine Arts Museum (MBAS) will be holding a gallery opening for multidisciplinary artist Dominique Valade on Saturday to highlight her new exhibition “Tenir En Main Le Fil.” Valade’s exhibit presents work which integrates sculpture, stamps, and textile creations. The displayed artworks were made at the Papeterie Saint-Armand, at the Atelier Circulaire and the Centre de design et d’impression textile de Montréal.She has experimented with serig- raphy and tanning techniques, applied to paper or textile media.A recent visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam made her rediscover the artist’s masterful work. Her artworks are therefore imbued of the colours, textures, and subjects explored by Van Gogh. The title of her exposition pays homage to this inspiration with a reference to Van Gogh’s letter to his brother Theo.Dominique Valade is also a professor at the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal.She happily shares her experience with her students and draws inspiration from conversations in her classroom where cracked sculptures, welding experiments, and clumsy sketches, often lie abandoned by her students.Dominique Valade obtained her PhD in the study and practice of art at the University of Québec in Montreal. She has also completed several public art pieces. Her works can be found in several public collections as well as at the Canadian Institute of Quebec, the Gabrielle- Roy Library, the Rimouski Museum, the Bas-Saint-Laurent Museum, the Lachine Museum, the Edmonton Art Gallery, Laurentien University, Toronto, Ont.and in the collection at the Sherbrooke Fine Arts house Record Staff To celebrate its 10th anniversary and as a part of Quebec’s annual culture days, the Journées de la culture, the Jean-Besré performing arts centre (CASJB) will hold an open house on September 29th.For the first time in its ten years of operations, the CASJB will open its doors to the public with interactive guided tours, which will allow the visitors to discover the behind-the-scenes elements of creation and production of the performing arts in the building.Mysterious from the outside, the CASJB is full of creativity and vitality.During an interactive guided tour, guests will have the opportunity to manipulate a lighting board, to participate in the Castelet Vox Pop in which they will share their opinions, to appreciate visual and artistic documentation, and to meet artists who will be on site to inform them and answer their questions. They will also be able to participate in the activities organized by two of its resident companies: La Musiquetterie and the Théâtre des Petites Lanternes.Alongside the open house, the CASJB will also offer a private view into the world of creation.A retrospective on the last ten years will be projected on the outside wall of the Center for the night.Guests will see images of the creations of the CASJB’s resident companies and the several artists that attend it.The CASJB, built by the Ville de Sherbrooke with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Communications, officially opened its doors on January 24, 2008.It was created to answer local professional companies’ and artists’ “Washington Black'' has been named as a finalist for the Man Booker Prize for fiction. The Victoria-based author joins three U.K.writers and two Americans on the short list, marking the second nomination for Edugyan's book in recent days.“Washington Black'' follows the saga of an 11-year-old boy who escapes slavery at a Barbados sugar plantation with the help of the owner's kinder brother. He embarks on a journey across the globe where he faces the weight of his past and lingering figures who threaten his future. The book was also longlisted for this year's Scotiabank Giller Prize on Monday.Others chosen for the Man Booker short list include two first novels: U.K.poet Robin Robertson's verse novel “The Long Take'' and “Everything Under'' by British writer Daisy Johnson. At 27, Johnson is the youngest-ever Booker finalist. The American finalists are Rachel Kushner's prison story “The Mars Room'' and Richard Powers' tree-inspired tale “The Overstory'' with the troubles-set story “Milkman'' by Northern Ireland writer Anna Burns round out the list.Edugyan previously appeared on the Man Booker short list in 2011 with her book “Half-Blood Blues,'' which focused on a black jazz musician who goes missing after being arrested in Nazi Germany during the Second World War.A representative for Edugyan said the author was unavailable to comment on the recognition for “Washington Black'' because she was currently on tour promoting the book.In an interview last month, the author said making the Man Booker long list was “wonderful.'' “I'm blown away by it,'' she said at the time.“It raises the visibility of the book and that's great.'' The winner of the 50,000 pound (C$85,500) prize will be announced on Oct.16 during a black-tie dinner at London's Guildhall.Favourites including Canada's Michael Ondaatje didn't make the cut from the 13-novel long list. Arluk says she, too, is buoyed by an apparent cultural boom that has seen Inuit throat singer-turned author Tanya Tagaq and Oji-Cree, two-spirit writer Joshua Whitehead make the Giller Prize long list, and the Haida-language drama “Edge of the Knife'' draw acclaim at the recent Toronto International Film Festival. She's intent on making sure those gains persist and deepen, and hopes that her role as director of Indigenous arts courses at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity can help assure that.“When space is being given for Indigenous voice it's a way that the Nation rises and I really love how that is celebrated,'' says Arluk, director of the centre's first year-round program of contemporary Indigenous arts programming. One of the first ventures is a classical music gathering featuring Dutcher and cellist Cris Derksen in November. While Dutcher's prize-winning album combined his operatic training with traditional language, Derksen has combined chamber symphonic traditions with powwow music.Arluk isn't sure why there seems to be a cultural boom now, but she's glad it's finally arrived.“We are all feeling excited about that and that excites our community and allows them to take bigger risks, have bigger vision, because we can,'' she says.“Space is being made at Banff Centre, National Arts Centre, AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario), Winnipeg Art Gallery, Stratford Festival. These are now places that are asking for Indigenous voice _ in our voice, not their voice .actually making space for Indigenous voice to be heard autonomously, self-determined and that is a sense of renaissance.'' The trained operatic singer, who was raised partly in the Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, sang the album entirely in the endangered Wolastoq language. After his win at a gala Monday night, he called on Canadian audiences to recognize and acknowledge long-standing artistry now gaining critical attention but still waiting to break into the mainstream.“You don't have to look too much further than the top prizes in art, in literature, in music in this country _ Giller prize, Sobey prize, Polaris prize _ we're here and we're making beautiful work.So my question to you is, are you ready to listen?'' Indigenous writer and academic Leanne Be- tasamosake Simpson says she “felt incredibly proud'' for Dutcher accomplishing so much on his own terms.“A lot of Indigenous people and our elders have been doing this work for generations and generations and generations without much recognition or affirmation so I think to have younger September 21 - September 27, 2018 Page 15 TALK Jeremy Dutcher puts spotlight on 'Indigenous renaissance' in Canadian arts scene CONT’D ON PAGE 20 Your week on TV SATURDAY DAYTIME SEPTEMBER 22, 2018 Bell Star 8 AM 8:30 9 AM 9:30 10 AM 10:30 11 AM 11:30 12 PM 12:30 1 PM 1:30 2 PM 2:30 3 PM 3:30 WCAX # - - CBS This Morning: Saturday (N) ’ Å Lucky Dog “Titan” Dr.Chris: Pet Vet Innovation Nation The Inspectors DER- MAFLASH Hazuki Glasses Pets Welcome Here The Incredible Dog Challenge Å Four Sides Ala.College Football College Football WPTZ % - - (7:00) Today (N) ’ Hanna Into the Wild Teen Kids News (N) Champ Within The Voyager Wilderness Vet Journey- Dreyer Naturally, Danny Seo Health & Happiness Premier League Soccer Brighton & Hove Albion FC vs Tottenham Hotspur FC.(N) ’ (Live) 2018 TOUR Championship Third Round.(N) ’ (Live) CBMT & 206 301 The Furches- ter Hotel Beat Bugs ’ Addison ’ Å What He Ate True Rainbow (:40) Beat Bugs ’ The Mo- blees ’ (:28) Stella & Sam ’ Our Montreal (N) Å The Relocation of Japanese-Canadians Doc Zone The fastest- moving condo market. The Nature of Things Å (DVS) CHLT _ 107 718 (6:00) Salut bonjour week-end (N) (SC) Bien (N) (SC) Deux ?lles le matin (SC) Propulsion (N) (SC) TVA nouvelles (N) Chacun sa route (N) Infopub- licité (SC) ›› “L’arme fatale 4” (1998, Action) Mel Gibson.Deux inspecteurs affrontent des membres des triades chinoises.WMTW ( - - Good Morning America (N) ’ Å Jack Hanna Ocean Treks Sea Rescue ’ (EI) The Wildlife Docs Rock the Park Vacation Creation College Football Notre Dame at Wake Forest.(N) (Live) Coll.Football College Football CKSH ) 108 - (7:59) Sous les mers Hôtel Transyl Sept nains et moi (N) Arthur (9:59) Code Max Edgar et Ellen ’ Podium (N) (SC) Estrie Téléjournal La facture (SC) Enquête Les immigrants investisseurs.Au suivant Une chaude lutte.(SC) Hercule Poirot “Poirot joue le jeu” ’ (SC) CKMI + - - Fish’n Canada Real Fishing Adv’ture North Fishful Thinking Disaster Decks Paid Program Powerboat Television Driving Television Mummies Alive “The Inca Maiden” Holmes Inspection “Failing Grade” Å Donut Showdown 2018 TOUR Championship Third Round.(N) ’ (Live) CFCF , 205 312 Your Morning Weekend (N) ’ Å Operation Smile ’ Å One World Kitchen ’ Flour Power ’ Written Canada Cash Cab ’ SportsCentre (N) ’ Å Moneytalk (N) Å Dog Tales Rescue ’ ›› “McFarland” (2015, Docudrama) Kevin Costner, Maria Bello.’ Å (DVS) WVNY 6 - - Good Morning America (N) ’ Å Jack Hanna Ocean Treks Sea Rescue ’ (EI) The Wildlife Docs Rock the Park Vacation Creation College Football Notre Dame at Wake Forest.(N) (Live) Coll.Football College Football WUTV > - - More Hair Tai Cheng PiYo Workout! Dutcher says he sees the impact of his work “moving to a different level'' as it reaches non-Indigenous audiences.“I hope it allows people to start interrogating settler colonialism, start interrogating the history that's happened in this country and start to think about and support linguistic revitalization and Indigenous excellence.'' “Finally Canada is starting to pick up on that and the next thing would be to act on it and to do something about it, to make it right,'' says Deer, who moved to Montreal 11 years ago from Quaqtaq, a small town in Nunavik.“First is acknowledging the wrongs that's (been) done and then on a govern- ment-level implement real resources to places that lack resources.I really believe that there needs to be focus on getting to the root of our pain.'' Meanwhile, Simpson hopes Indigenous traditions aren't viewed as something antiquated or in need of preservation.“(Dutcher) is breathing life into it, it's alive. He also put his own spin on it and infused these songs with creative energy that I think will propel others to do the same,'' says the Michi Saagiig Nish- naabeg scholar, whose own work celebrates Anishinaabe traditions.“I don't want to preserve my culture so much as to live it and to create those sparks of life in the next generation.Dutcher Local Sports These are just a few books about running history and women's running that I hope will inspire you to start running or keep at it through the rough weather.Friday , September 21, 2018 Page 21 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Fall reads to inspire you on your rest and recovery days from running If you are looking for an injection of motivation to stick with your running program this fall, here are my Top Five Reading Suggestions that offer a dose of inspiration for every level of runner: 1."Olympic Collision" by Kyle Keiderling For those who watched it live, the LA Olympic Games of 1984 will be forever remembered for the tragedy involving two fierce rivals in the women’s 3000 meters.Never before had a host nation so universally condemned a rival for an accidental collision with one of their own.Even Zola Budd, the teenage barefoot South African perpetrator representing Great Britain, was shocked, horrified and overwhelmed by the events of which she was eventually exonerated.Budd, along with American sweetheart, Mary Decker, were the two medal favorites to win, with two billion people tuning in from across the globe, making it the most watched sporting event in history, witnessing Decker and Budd collide on the track with three laps to go in the seven and one half-lap race. Both of their dreams of Olympic gold were shattered and replaced by an infamous series of finger-pointing accusation.2.“The Miracle Mile” by Jason Beck The book recaptures ’54 Games magic from the 1954 British Empire Games in Vancouver, which changed both the city and world sport forever.Published by Caitlin Press Inc.Beck, curator and facility director of British Columbia’s Sports Hall of Fame shares why he wanted to publish a book on the “The Miracle Mile” which is a riveting account of the 1954 British Empire Games in Vancouver.Highlighted by the historic men’s mile event, it featured the only two men on earth to have broken the four-minute mile, who then broke it together in the same race for the first time.3."Runner in Red" by Tom Murphy, also author of Just Call me Jock The story of what many believe to be the first woman to run in the world’s most iconic race.No one knows for certain whether or not the subject of Runner in Red actually finished the 1951 Boston Marathon as some Canadians claim.Yet the story was also the first reported attempt by a woman to prove that she could do it too, just like a man.It was a mid-20th century women empowerment story long before the phrase was ever coined.4."When Running Made History" by Roger Robinson The memoir is Robinson’s account as a spectator at twenty-one running events that made history, from the 1948 Olympics when London financially struggled to put on the games after World War II, to his work as a journalist at the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.Robinson also writes what it was like to be in New York after 9/11 running in Central Park.5."Marathon Woman" by Kathrine Switzer This memoir is about Katherine Switzer, who was the first woman to officially finish the Boston Marathon in 1967 and where she had to fend off the race director, Jock Semple, who attempted to drag her off the course while enforcing the “males only” rule of competition. The memoir chronicles her passion for running, to winning the New York City Marathon in 1974, to spearheading the first women's marathon in the 1984 L.A.Olympics.These are just a few books about running history and women's running that I hope will inspire you to start running or keep at it through the rough weather. If there is a running/fitness book you would like me to review please contact me.www.runwithit.ca Twitter: @christineruns Instagram - The reinstatement sparked sharp criticism across Canada and around the world. The head of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport said he was “dismayed and disappointed'' at the WADA decision.“WADA is effectively thumbing their nose at the clean athletes,'' CCES president and chief executive officer Paul Melia said from Ottawa.Canadian lawyer and investigator Richard McLaren issued the damning report for WADA that concluded there was widespread, state-sanctioned doping among Russian athletes.Reached Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland, McLaren said his report still stands.“Nobody has ever been able to say that this didn't occur,'' said McLaren, a Western University law professor.“Just because you deny, deny and deny, doesn't mean that it didn't occur. It just means that you're not prepared to say that it did. You're not prepared to admit it.'' Several Canadian athletes voiced their displeasure with the WADA decision via social media.“I really doubt the Russians will, overnight, start working against doping and accept recognized standards,'' said Christiane Ayotte, the director of the WADA-accredited laboratory in Montreal.“I will never have confidence that the Russians will have completely changed their cheating ways.Even if they have set up a laboratory in a university, the lab needs to be under trusteeship.Russia's Olympic committee was brought back into the fold after the Pyeongchang Olympics last February in South Korea.Athletes who could prove they were clean were able to compete at the Games as “Olympic Athletes from Russia.'' “I think that it absolutely is wrong for (WADA) to reinstate them without having gone through the process that they were supposed to go through,'' Canadian curler Chelsea Carey said from Calgary.“Even then, I'm not sure that it was enough.I think it's atrocious but unfortunately I'm not terribly surprised.'' In Pyeongchang, Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky tested positive for the banned substance meldonium, which is believed to help blood circulation. He gave his medal back after winning mixed doubles bronze with his wife, Anastasia Bryzgalova.Canada, which won gold in the mixed doubles curling, was third in the medal standings in Pyeongchang with 29 medals (11 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze), finishing behind Norway (39) and Germany (31).Olympic Athletes from Russia and host South Korea were tied for sixth place overall with 17 medals.“Obviously Russia and the IOC have convinced WADA to change their mind on the roadmap and those criteria, so it proves that WADA is not able to act independently,'' Melia said.“It means that going forward the clean athletes, the anti-doping agencies, the governments of the world have to demand a reform to the governing structure of WADA because that executive committee is just a puppet of the IOC.“That has to change going forward or we really don't have an effective international regulator for the code.'' As for next steps, Russia has agreed to hand over samples and data by Dec.31.If it doesn't, RUSADA will again be declared noncompliant.“There's a lot of credibility on the line here,'' said Scott, who still leads the WADA athletes' group.“So I think a lot of people are going to be waiting and watching very closely what happens from here.'' Whenever third hand’s highest card is lower than the nine, he should give count, not automatically play third hand high. Here, East must bravely play the three — lowest from an odd number. This first trick tells South that West has the club ace and queen, so declarer must try to keep East off the lead.South will probably cross to the heart jack, then lead a low diamond and duck it to West when East does not play an honor. Now West should realize that he must try to find an entry in the East hand, and the only candidate seems to be in spades. So, West should shift to the spade 10.Here, East can take that trick and return a club for down two.The defenders take one diamond, one spade and four clubs.
