fall and winter line.“There was a lot of buying,” she said.But friends helped to get the store ready for opening.A co-worker from Woolrich helped, as did the couple’s daughter.She said they couldn’t pay them immediately.They currently have a part-time employee, Margo Allen, who works the odd day.The store offers what Cloutier describes as reasonably priced clothing similar to Woolrich’s.The Royal Robbins line, she said, is good quality.They also carry some lines from Denmark, like Lolë, which was created in Montreal but is now offered worldwide.The name Windrush is a former farm name.Cloutier said Bryson’s parents moved from Montreal and bought a farm 40 years ago.They named it Windrush Farm.They are now gone, but Bryson took the name Windrush Marketing for Next year the price is going up to $15 but that makes it just $1.50 per week.All the teachers are volunteers.The money goes towards paying insurance and janitorial services and for putting on a reception for the final evening.This year, on the final night, quilts, photography, acrylic paintings, chair- caning projects, knitting and crocheting, astronomy displays, stained glass, creative writing, stuffed animals and other projects were mounted on the walls of the gym.Some classes, like Bridge, local history, and world history, and Health Matters, did not have displays.A few classes performed.The guitar class played four songs.The exercise to Desert Heat class put on a demonstration.The line dancing class did a few numbers.The French and English conversation group sang a few songs.Two members of the creative writing class read out some of their compositions.And in between, door prizes were drawn.To finish the evening, sandwiches and desserts were available in the cafeteria.The ten weeks went by quickly.Next August, look on line to see what courses will be available.Flyers are available at Brome Fair and at the school office in late August and early September.The Missisquoi Community School is one of the oldest community schools throughout the whole province.There are many good reasons why it has been able to continue this long.Missisquoi Community School wrapped up its successful 76th session Susan Dover led a quilting class.Many beautiful quilts came out of the session PHOTO BY LOUISE SMITH BCN Staff As part of its population attraction strategy, the Brome-Missisquoi MRC is beginning a major citizen consultation aimed at collecting qualitative information about life in Brome-Missisquoi.There is a great mix of ideas on the essential and ‘wow’ factor elements of living in Brome-Missisquoi and the survey also aims to learn about the elements that make young people (18-40 years old) who live there vibrate.The data collected will better define the territorial marketing campaign that will follow.According to Francis Dorion, Deputy Director General at the Brome-Missisquoi MRC, it is particularly important to learn about the region through its citizens in order to promote it afterwards.All citizens of the region are invited to take part in the survey, which is available on the ‘T’en penses quoi?’ platform, at www.tpquoi.ca.About the attraction strategy In order to respond to the shortage of labor and the stakes attached to an aging population, the Brome-Missisquoi MRC, in partnership with businesses and organizations, has developed a strategy in order to attract 10 000 new workers - about 6,000 families -within 10 years.Brome-Missisquoi survey Pet of the Week: John Hi! I am happy, friendly, walk well on a leash and love people! Come and meet me and all my many, many friends here at the SPCA Montérégie, 178, ch.du Vide, Ste- Angèle-de-Monnoir (exit 37 on autoroute 10).Adoption hours are 2 - 4 pm on Thursdays & Saturdays.P.S.DON’T GET OR GIVE A PUPPY FOR CHRISTMAS! If your family is considering getting a dog/puppy for Christmas and you have really thought it out, please wait until a few days AFTER Christmas when all the excitement, presents, wrappings, festivities and guests are over! By Steve Blake The Sutton Volunteer Centre celebrated its 35th anniversary by creating a unique photography book featuring its volunteers, employees, and even some of the people who use the CAB’s services.Fifth- and sixth- grade students at the Sutton school interviewed the subjects.The interviews helped the students understand what volunteering is all about and why people do it, CAB Director Janna Hubacek said.The book, “RetroLobo du CAB,” contains original photos of the volunteers when they were young, and re-creations of those photos of the same people as adults.It is on sale for $20.The book was launched Friday with a reception at the Sutton Covered Market.The photos were displayed on the walls, where they will remain until the spring, Hubacek said.After that, they will see about installing them outside.The artistic directors for the project were Isabelle Grenier and Stephane Lemardele.Lemardele said he saw a similar project in the United Kingdom.He decided to add the aspect of having students interview the subjects to get their stories, specifically about why they volunteer.Two photographers, Eliane Excoffier and Tristan Corbeil Lapointe, took the pictures while others built sets, found setting locations and made sure the clothing was similar to that in the original photos.The team had been thinking about the project since last spring, and with the thirty-fifth anniversary approaching, Lemardele said, “it was time to use the idea of the book.” They started in September and things fell into place quickly.“It was amazing how the children and the older people connected,” Lemardele said.“It was like there was no age between them.The eyes were the same whether they were 8 or 80.” He said Max Gagnon, the boy on the tricycle who is on the book’s cover, was quiet at age 7, when the original photo was taken.But at 70, he said, he was more boisterous.“I want to be like that when I’m old,” Lemardele said.He said the subjects displayed emotion.“There were memories, but no nostalgia.” The project was equally as exciting for the photographers.“It was so fun,” Excoffier said.“Some of the stories were touching; others were fun.It was a nice human experience.” It took three weeks to complete the photography, she said.They were paid a small stipend for the work, but it wasn’t about the money, she said.It was about the experience.BromeCountyNews T uesday , December 4, 2018 PAGE 5 Diane Demers 450-266-0997 245 de la Rivière, Cowansville Foot care specialist Receipts available Manicure and Nail Care A.P.Q.member C.P.A.D.Q.Gift Certificates available H y g i e n i s t Financial statements, Audit, Bookkeeping, Taxation, Corporations, Individuals, Estate planning and settlement, Farm and business transfers, re-organizations 127 Principale, Suite 105, Cowansville, QC, J2K1J3 duke-cpa.com T:(450) 263-4123 Fax: (450) 263-3489 CPA Inc.DUKE Société de comptables professionnels agréés Chartered professional accountants corporation Sutton Volunteer Centre celebrates 35 years with book of photographs Max Gagnon at 7 and 70 COURTESY STEVE BLAKE Stephane Lemardele, the artistic director of the project, and Eliane Excoffier, one of the photographers, speak at the book launch Friday at the Sutton Covered Market Lina and Luce Goerlach COURTESY BromeCountyNews PAGE 6 T uesday , December 4, 2018 By Steve Blake Midnight Madness began 12 years ago in the summer.It was the launch of the final Harry Potter book.Bookstores could not start selling the book until midnight, so Brome Lake Books decided to stay open until 12, Lucy Hoblyn of Brome Lake Books said.“Midnight Madness started because of Harry Potter,” she chuckled.“Somebody said it would be good to do it a couple of weeks before Christmas.It became popular with the merchants.” Now it’s an annual event that gets the Town of Brome Lake community together to celebrate the holiday season.It’s also a chance to get a jump on Christmas shopping.Nearly every business and restaurant in Knowlton is participating in Midnight Madness this year, and they’ll all stay open until midnight.That’s because more than 3,000 people converge on the town, depending on the weather.“It’s a big shopping night for merchants.There are some fun deals and big sales,” Hoblyn said.Midnight Madness is a popular event.The hotel is always booked and the restaurants are packed.Local artists and artisans will join the downtown businesses to offer a wide selection of unique gifts.But it’s not just about the deals at the stores and restaurants, Hoblyn said.There are activities and entertainment for the whole family.Besides shopping there are horse-drawn Midnight Madness in Knowlton Saturday from 5 p.m.until midnight MIDNIGHT MADNESS • BROME COUNT Y NEWS T uesday , December 4, 2018 • PAGE 7 Olaf is surrounded by a few close friends.Carolers will be roaming the streets of Knowlton.CONT’D ON PAGE 8 PHOTO COURTESY OF LUCY HOBLYN PHOTO COURTESY OF LUCY HOBLYN PAGE 8 MIDNIGHT MADNESS • BROME COUNT Y NEWS T uesday , December 4, 2018 carriage rides and musicians.People can warm up near a bonfire while sipping a cup of hot chocolate.Meanwhile, mascot Olaf will be roaming around meeting people.At the Brome County Historical Society’s Children’s Museum you can learn why people decorate trees during the holiday season, and make old-fashioned ornaments.That’s a free event between 4 and 7 p.m.A children’s choir will perform at the gazebo at 5 p.m.And the Knowlton Players will sing Christmas carols from about 7 until 9 p.m.Included in the musical entertainment will be Daniel Haché playing traditional Celtic holiday tunes.Glenn Bertie and Nancy May Dey the duo, Squeegee will also perform.On the library lawn will be food and crafts vendors.A Christmas market will feature two inflatable igloos that will be fully lit.As part of the Festival of Lights handmade lanterns will be on display throughout the town, and they will stay up through Christmas.And a light show will be projected against the back of the Pettes Library.Shoppers have a chance to win.Hoblyn said there are plastic elves hidden at the businesses.The shoppers can write down where they found the elves at each store, and if they’re correct they might win a prize.Some of the merchants also donate prizes with purchases.CONT’D FROM PAGE 7 Midnight Madness in Knowlton Midnight Madness prizes Local products offered at Midnight Madness PHOTOS COURTESY OF LUCY HOBLYN BCN Staff Nearly 200 lanterns decorated by members of the community will light up Coldbrook Park in the heart of Knowlton this coming Saturday, Dec.8 at 5 p.m.kicking off the traditional Midnight Madness event in the village.The lanterns were decorated by our schools;
