and other tokens are observed* of an apprasching change.At vo period could the statesman find greater eae.in effecting a destined change.It is taked for grauted that the landed gentry would aot refuse a relaxation of the law, if asked in the neme of starving lreland; it could not be denied to England when granted to the sister country; if granted for a time, the law could bardly be renewed.Never, perhaps, would a Minister encounter less opposition to the measure.Among agriculturalists, especially among farmers, opinion already wavers; and great part of.what is oppusition before the change—a remmant of prejudice kept up by timidity— would turn to admiring concurrence as soon as the change should have been achieved and fouad to be harmless even to those who dreaded it.Never woaid it do se much obvious good with so little injury : the benefit to be anticipated from a freer supply of food is most attractive in a time of scarcity; and on the faith of that the papers insert ed it.The falsehood of the account was sdon dis~ covered ; and when the boy Pearce applied for payment on account of the report, the money was’ handed to him and he was then given into custody.The prisoner declared that a “ tall gentleman ” had accosted him in Chancery Lane and desired him to get the money for him.He stated, however, that he used formerly to take reports to the newspapers for his father, Villiers Pearce; but they were always “true ones,” his fatlier being a reporter of man years’ standing.He said he had oot taken any copy to the papers for his father for two or three years.‘The boy was remanded.R Ou Thursday, the prisoner was discharged; established Churches in England on the Queen’s letter; bat a correct estimate of the quantity and quality of the effects collected and sent out, can only be formed by viewing them.Tt would seem, at first sight, that (here is enough of clothing and bedding for all the inhahi- tants of Quebec ; and we are told that there are still about two hundred bales in the stores, The whole of the relief afforded is the produce of the industry of the people of the United Kingdom and it is in addition to hundreds of thousand pounds from the same source which is spent annually in Canada for Military purposes, all of which cone tributes eventually to the support of the working classes in the country.We are sorry that some misunderstandings and symptoms of jealousy and pitiful distinctions are said to have shewn themselves in respect to the distribution of the charitable donations of our fellow subjects on the other side of the Atlantic, and partie cularly that motives inconsistent with the object and feelings of the donors should have been publicly imputed in the newspapers to some of the gentlemen who sacrifice their lime and labour in the distribution.There is one consolation however, that whatever may be said of us, it cannot diminish the merits of the people of England, who so zealonsly came forward on a real case of distress, certified by the most respectable authorities, for the reliefof the sufferers, and we are persuaded that nothing can in any degree diminish that generous and charitable feeling which at all times has distinguished the people of England on extraordinary cases-of distress, oh Loor SHarr.—We have authentic information that there are counterfeit Mexican dollars and United States half-dollars in cirenlation, all well imitated.When there is any suspicion, the person offering them ought to be arrested and taken to the Police Magistrate, to account for, where, when and from whom he got them.By this means the counterfeiters or importers may he discovered, From the quantity in circulation, it is probable that there may be some Artists amongst ourselves orin the vicinity, and it is a pity their talents are not better known, and their persons enjoying the distinction they deserve.Proceedings of the General Committee for the Relief of the Sufferers by the late Fires.Queskc, 1st Dec, 1845, The regular weekly meeting was at the same time, a publicatiun, the columus of which will be open to the discussion of questions of Legislauon, Law, and Practice, must be of great interest not only to Members of the Profession.but also to all Men of Business.We have been urged to publish this Review by a large the sympathy they have already displayed towards us at the commencement of a task as serious and as difficutt as the one we are about to undertake.Butto render the proposed work interesting and useful, they must understand that we cannot alone bear the burden of it, In a community like ours, a periodical like this can never succeed without the combined efforts of the different Members offthe Profession whose interest it especially concerns; we therefore address ourselves to the Members of the Bar; they owe usone and all their contributions to a work aiming at the general good.From the high functionaries who are called upon to administer Justice, aod whose d-cisions we shall have to report, we ask patronage and indulgence, Our labours will be conducted with deliberation, with accuracy and with impartiality.They will always have for one of their principal objects the maintenance of those good fechngs which should never cease to exist between the Bench and the Bar, We also beg tolay no ill founded claim to the patronage and encouragement of the Canadian public.We trust that they will appreciate the value of a work of general and practical utility, which may be productive of the most advantageous results, if favourably received.The © Review of Legislation and Jurisprudence” will appear in Monthly Numbers of 48 pages, 8vo.printed on the best paper and with the greatest typographical care.It might so happen that some numbers will have more and others less than that number of pages, but the Proprietor engages 10 give during the year 12 numbers, containing between 500 and 600 pages of matter, Articles wiltten in either language will be indiscriminate.y admitted in the lteview.‘The subscription will be six dollars per annum payable after the publication of the first number.All letters, communications, &c., to be addressed [post paid] at the office of the Review, No.51, St.Gabriel Sireet, opposite the Canada Hotel.N.B.—T'he first number will appear on the 1st of October next, LOUIS O.LETOURNEUX, Managing Editor and Proprietor.LETTER OF SUPPORT, To Louis O.LeTourneux, Esq., Advocate.—=Sr, we hail with satisfaction your project of establishing a Review of Legislation and Jurisprudence, and approve of it on all accounts, Itisa good and useful enterprise which will meet we trust with all the encouragement it deserves, not only at the hands of the members of the profession, but also from the public in general.As much as our ime will allow, you can depend on vur contributions as well as our warmest sympathies, We are, sir, with considerstion your professional brethren.Montreal, August, 1845 ;
