attempt alter we had our force massed un te river's edge, and with what loss it was ae- complished, and you will have the means of duly appreciating it.There is vo miracle about this reeult.[ts sunply the work ofn planning and direchng brain, with 1he mast ulter recreey and the grealest possible celarity.Bul these qualilies produce rasults which, in their eneemble, appear aluzost miraculous, I remember, in tnilitary reading, but one operation of precisely the samo kind.It is the operation of Prince Eugene against the French, who held the line of the Adige.Eugene by a series of skilful manenvres, induced the French commander to scatter his troops along the line of the river; then, by dexterous femts, he entirely deceived his ad versary as to the direction of his march, and the latter war anddenly surprised with the news that the line of the Adige was forced, aud a detachment of his forges, wholly routed at Carpi.Lee’s surprise could not have been greater when be heard thatthe Union army was neross the river and had turned his flank. And, indeed, we have nol merely material proof of this—sueh as that, when we were across the Rapidan thu enemy was yet picketing the Rap- pahsnnuck—bul we have documentary evidence of it ina letter from Gen.Lee.himself, which was found in the house at Chancellorsville. The letter, signed by Gen.Taylor, Lec’e Chief of Siatl, was written to the rebel officer commanding the post at Chancellorsville, and was dated tom Lea’s haad-qnaners at 4:20 a’elock p.m., of the day we arrived.[It stated, in substance, that “(he General had at that mowent heard that the Federal force was across lily’s Ford’?(we hud bean across eighteen hour.)—* that General Anderson” (who commanded at United States Ford with a couple of brigades) ¢ knew notluing of our araval’-~and asked him ¢ 10 come down immediately and consalt with the Commanding General!” The order which the Commanding General issued on Thursday, after the achievement of this position, 1s the key to the situation, and to 1the expectations of the commander. It will be seen that the position gained at Chaucellorsville, which is ten miles weat by south of Fredericksburg, completely turns the line of rebel defences on the series of ridges in the rear ol Fredericksburg, and in fact there was now Lutone alternative ; the enemy must either retreat along the ime of the railroad toward Richmond, while that line was yet uncut, (for thiera was no other line of retreat, the communication with Gordonsville being threatened by our hold un that line,) or else come out and “give us ballle on our own ground.” Lee had bsen completely outgeneralied, and 1n a strategie pont of view had suilered a defuat befire we had fired a single shot.It was 1m this sense, and not in the meaning that they were actually destroyed albeit he anticipated nothing less than that, that Gen.Hooker on the night of our anival al Chancellorsville proudly exclaimed, ¢ The rabel army 1s now the legitimate properly ol the Army of the Potomac.” (Jen.Lee seems 10 have felt himself strong enough 10 pursue the latler force is, 91 is, of course, impossible to say.! think it would be unsafe to estimate it at less than eighty thousand, and there are those having good means of knowing who carry it to a hundred thousand, Occupying, two, the interior’ line, Lee’s facilities fur a change of front were, of course, very great; aud our army bad hardly gained its position when a rebel column wus marching past his picket line to the right. How much atlention wus paid to this lact at the nme | do not know, but subsequent everis proved thal it was very wsiguificant, The day continued to pasa in a very dull way for a day ot battle, and only here and there wav there anything more even than desultory skirmishing and picket firing.About three o'clock the pickets on the right at Gen.Slecuin’s front repoited that from a cerain position waggons had been seen moving in a westerly direction all day.[twas at once surmised that this might be are< treat, bul subsequent events proved that il was a part of an aflair ot aliogether another nature. To ascertain, however, what it really was, (ien.Sickles, who was still in reserve, was ordered lo make a recunncisance in heavy force in that-diraction.Thie was done with great prompinese, and the divisions of Gen.Birney and Whipple, with Gen.Barlow’s brigade, from Howard's corps, were pushed out to the front, Berdan’s brigade of sharpshooters having the advance, and supporting Randolph’s battery. Our troops moved rapidly aid soon became more or less engaged, especially with the artillery and sharpshooters as skirmishers.Berdan avou went in spme aixly prisoners, belonging to the 28rd Guosgia, including one Major, two Captains, and three Liautenants, Being upon the ground, | examined three prisoners, and soon found that the “ waggoD train” which we had seen moving during the day was composed mainly of ordnance waggons and ambulances, and that Stonewall Jackson and staff were at ihe head of u column of troops which the wag- guns lollowed.Nothing more was needed to convince us that this daring opponent was executing another of his sudden movements, and it was resolved to checkmate him.Gen.Sickles was ordered 10 push on, and Gen.Williams’ division of Slooum’s column was orderrd to co-operate.Biroey pushed ahead with great vigour, snd with Randolph's battery sent to the rear as prisoners of war the entire remna: t of ihe 23rd Georgia regiment, numbering over 400 officers aud wen, The column of (he enemy which had been moving up the road was now literally cut in ‘wo, and Gen.Williams had commenced a flank movement on the enemy’s right, whioh promised the most auspicious results, But at 5 o’clock a (errific crash of musketry on our extreme night, announced that Jackson had commenced his operations. This had been anticipated, bat it.was supposed that aler his column was cul, the corps of Gen.Howard, (formerly Geveral Sigel’s) with na supports, would be sufficient to resiet his approach, and finding that he was himseli .assailed in the rear, he would turn about and , retreat to escape capture. But to 1he disgrace of the 11ih corps be it said thatthe divisi nof Gen.Schurz, which was the first agsailed, almost instantly gave way.— ‘Threats, entreaties, and orders of commanders ware of no uvail.Thousands of hese cowards threw down their gous, and soon sIreained down the road towards head-quarters.The enemy pressed his advaniage.General Devan's division, in iront of him, followed suit, and the brave general was for the sepond time severaly wounded in the foot, while endeavouring to rally his men, Gen.Howard, with all his daring and resolution and vigour, could not stem the tide ol the reireating and cowardly poltroons. The brigades of Colonels Bushbeek and McLean only remained fighting, und maintained themselves as lung as possible. But they too gave way, though in good order, before Yasily superior aumbers.” Gen.Hooker now sent tothe aid of Gen.Howard the choicest division ol his army, the creation of his own hand, the famous Second Division of the Third Corps, commanded by Major Gen.Berry.Capt.Best soon moved his batteries un a ridge running across the rvad, and after a short bat sanguinary contest,’ ., the fusther advance of the enemy was stayed.Of course this disaster compelled the recall ot Sickles and Slocum, who had been pursuing their work with remarkable vigour.Gen, Williams’ division returned only to find, a portion of their works filled with the enemy.Sickles’ division could not communicate with the rest of the army at all by the way they | advanced, and only at grea} nisk by any other | route.: ‘This was the position at dark, and it did not look very promising. But our.energalic commander was more than equal to theemer- gency.New dispositions to repair this disaster were al once resolved upon.Communication was at once had with Gena, Birney and Whipple and a might attack ordered, te restore the conneclion of the lines.Gen.: Birmey’s division maile the attack at 11.at night, aided by Capt.Best’s guns, massed : on the ridge in.front ot the enemy.Birney’s position was on the Howard was gallantly retaken by Gen.Hobart Ward. This night attack was lhe most grand and terrific thmg of the war.The moon shone bright, and an enemy could be seen at good musket range. The air was formed wub General Beury's gallant division on the rioht, General Buney next on the lelt, Gen.Whipple and Gen Wiliams supporting. At 5} a.m.lhe avance became engaged in the ravine, jus beyond the ridge where Cuptain Best's gurs Lad made their tesriñe onslaught the night velore, and wl.ere they still frowned upon the enemy and threatened his destruction. The raule of musketry ro.n becam « a lune : «.nlinued crash, snd in a few moments, as Lattaiiou after battalion became engaged, the roar surpassed all conception, and indicated that the fight would be one of the most terrible nature.Gen.Beiry’s division, which had checked (he enemy's advance the nigh be- fre, engaged him again, and if it were possible for them to add more laurels to their tame, then they did it thrice ragged, streaming tebels running down the road, indicated that tat portion of the enemy’s line hud been crushed. At 8 o'clock, a.m., Gen.French sent his compliments to Gen.Hooker, with.the information that he had charged the enemy | ar J was diiving him before him.Nickles maintained the attack upon his line with great endurance. The enemy seemed determined to erush him with the immensity ol his lorces, and, assubsequently shown from the siatemenls of prisuners, five whole divi- mions of the rebel army were precipiinted upon this portion of the line, for from these five divisions we touk during the day an aggregate uf over two thousand prisoners. The exploits of our gallant troops in those dark, tangled, gloomy woods, may never be brought to hight 3 but they woud fill a hundred volumes.1 was a deliberate, desperate hand- tu-hund confliet, and 1he carnage was por- feetly fnghifol.Cool officers say that the dead and wounded of the enemy covered the ground in heaps, and that the rebels seemed utterly regardless of their lives, and hteraliy threw themselves upon the mugzies of our guns. Many desperate charges were made during the fight, patticularly by Berry's divi- ron.Mott’s brigade made fifteen distinct charges, and captured seven stands of colors, the Seventh New Jersey, Col.Francine, alone capturing four stands of colours and five hundred prisonere.Gen.Couch’s Second Army Corps, though only in part present, did excellent work.lt was Gen.French who charged und drove the enemy on the flank, and it was the indomitable Hancock who gallantly went to the relief of the hard-pressed Sickles. The engagement lasted without the slightest intermission from 5§ a.m.to 8 45 a.rn., when there was a temporary cesealion on our past, occasioned by getting out of ammunition. We held our position fus nearly an hour with the bayonet, and then being re-supplied, an order was given to fall back to the vicitily of the Chancellor House, which we did in good urder. Here the contest was maintained for an hour or more, not so severely as before, but with grent havoe to the enemy and considerable loss to vureelves. The vicinity of the Chancellor House was; vow the theatre of the fight, and my visits in that spot became less frequent.Gen.Hooker maintained his head-quarlers there until 10, a.m., when it was set on lirg by the
