[" » Pie CE FES à wii al AN OR DIN AN CE, For preventing Accidents by Fire.HEREAS many Houfes in the Towns of Quebec and Montreal in this Province have of late taken Fire, and fome of ther have been deftroyed thereby, which has been owing for the moft Part to the Negligence of the Inhabitants of .the faid Houles, in not caufing the Chimnies thereof to be fwept fo often as they fhould have been, and by keeping Afhes in the faid Houfes on wooden Floors or in wooden Veflels, and other fuch Inftances of Careleffnefs ; in Order therefore to prevent fuch unhappy Accidents for the Time to come, and to encreafe the Means of extinguifhing Fires in Houfes when they do happen, It is Ordained, by the Lieutenant Governor of this Province, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Council of the fame, That after the Twenty-fith Day of the Month of March, in this prefent Year of Our Lord, One Thoufand Seven Hundred and Sixty-cight, every Houfe-keeper in the Towns of Quebec and Montreal, and the Subuibs thereof, fhall caufe the Kitchen Chimney, or Kitchen Chimunies (if there arc more than qne).of the Houfe he lives in, to be fwept by a Chimney Sweeper unce in every four Wecks throughout the whole Year, and every other Chimney in the Houfe, which is made Ule of eith:.by Fire in a Hearth or by a Stove, to be f[wept likewile by a Chimney-Swceper once in every four Weeks during the Winter Scafon ofthe Year, reckoning from the firit Day of October in every Year, to the firit Day of May.~ And further, every Houfe-keeper in the faid Towns ot Qucbec.and Montreal, and the Suburbs thereof, in whole Houfe there fhall be three or more Hearths, fhall keep two Buckets for carrying Water when any Houles in the faid Towns fhall happen to be on Fire; and thefe Buckets fhall be made either of Leather or Seal-Skin, er the Skin of fome other F fh, or of Canvas painted on the outfide, and covered with Pitch on the infide, and fhall be arge enough to hold at leaft two Gallons of Water each.And every Houle- keeper in the faid Towns, and Suburbs thereof, in whofe Houfe there fhall be only one or two Hearths, fhall be obliged to keep one fuch Bucket; and thee Buckets thall be marked with the Chrillian and Surname of the Houfe- keeper to whofe Houle they belong, or at lcaft with the initial Letters thercof.And every Houfc-keeper in the faid Towns of Quebec and Montreal, ard the Suburbs thereof, fhall likewife keep a Hatchet in his Houle, to affitt in ling down Houles in Cales of dangcrous Fires, in Order to prevent the {preading of the Flames.And everv Houfe-keeper in the faid Towns, and the Suburbs thereof, fhall likewife keep as many Ladders fixt on the Roof ot his Hcuie as there are feparate Chimnies, or Stacks of Chimnies, belonging to the faid Houle, and fhall caufe them to be fo placed that there fhall be a Ladder leading from the Bottom of the Roof to every feparate Chimney, or Stack of Chunnices, to the End that, if any Chimney fhall happen to take Fire, it may be ealy to carry up Water to it, in Order to extinguifh the Fire.And every Houfe-keeper in the faid Towns, andthe Suburbsthercof, fhall Jikewife kecp in his Houte two Fire-poies, of the Length of ten Feet, and five Inches diameter, with crots Bars, made of Wood, fluck into them, at the Diftance of fix Inches one from the other, in Order to knock off the Roots of Houfes that are on Fire, or that are in immediate Danger ut becoming fo.And where it happens that the Houfe kcepers in the faid Towns of Quebec and Montreal, and the Suburbs thercof, are not the Owners of the Houfes in which they live, it fhall be lawful tor them to deduét the Expence they arc at in procuring the Water-buckets, Ladders and Firc-poles afore- faid, for the IHoufcs they inhabit, and likewife the Expence of procuring new Buckets, Ladders and Firc-poles, trom Time to Time, as the former ones wear out, from the Rent they pay for the faid Houfes to the Owners thereof.- And to the End that the aforefaid Direftions may be complied with by the Houfe-keepers of the faid Towns of Quebec and Montreal, and the Suburbs thercot, Jr is further Ordained, by the Authority aforefaid, That if, at any Time after the Month of May next enfuing, any Chimney, in any Houfe, in either of the faid Towns, or the Suburbs thercof, fhall be on Fire, and it fhall be found that the Occupicr of fuch Houfc had not in the Houfe at the Time of fuch Fire a Hatchet and two Fire-poles, and the proper Number of Ladders placed on the Roof of the Houfe in the Manner above-mentioned, or that the Chimney that was on Fire, or any other of the Chimnics in the fame Houfe, that cught, according to the Diicétions of this Ordinance, to have been {wept within four Wecks, has not been (wept by a Chimney-{wecper witnin the faid Space of four Wecks immediatly preceding fuch Fire, the faid Occupier of fuch Houte fhall forfeit the Sum of Forty Shillings for fuch Negle\u20act, of which onc Halt fall b-long to Our Sovereign Lord the King, and the other to any one who Mall fue for the fame, by Information before any one Juftice of the Peace of the Dilriét in which fuch Houle is fitaated, who is hereby arthorized and required de Mars, 1768.TS So IOS ORDONNANCE pour préventr les Incendies.U que plufieurs mailons dans les villes de Québec et de Montréal, en cette province, ont depuis peu pris en feu, ct-que quelques unes d\u2019icelles ont été confumées, ce qui a été pour la majeure partie l\u2019etfet de la négligence des habitans des dites maifons, en ne failant pas ramonner les dites cheminées auffi fouvent qu\u2019elles avroient dû l'être, et en contervant des cendres dans les dites maifons fur des planchers ou dans vaiffeaux de bois, et par d\u2019autres femblables exemplesde Ù négligence : C'eft pourquoi, à fin de prévenir de pareils accidens facheux pour l\u2019avenir, et pour augmenter les moyens d\u2019éteindre le feu dans les maifons quand ce malheur arrivera, I ef?Ordenne, par le Lieutenant-Gouvernezr de cette province, par et avec l\u2019avis et le confenten:ent du Confeil d\u2019icelle, Qu'apres le vingt et cinquiéme jour du mois de Mars \u201cde la pré\u2018ente année de grace mil fept cens foixante-huit, toute perfonne qui tiendra maifen dans les dites villes de Québec et de Montréal, et dans les fauxbourgs d'icelles, fera ramonner par un ramonneur la cheminée ou les cheminées de cuifine, (s'il y en a plufieurs) de la maifon en laquelle elle demeurera, une fois par chaque quatre femaines pendant toute l\u2019année, et chaque autre cheminée de la maiton daus laquelle on tera du feu, foit qu\u2019on y en fafle fur le foyer ou dans un poële, fera parcillement ramonnée par un ramonneur, une fois par chaque quatre femaines pendant l\u2019hiver de l\u2019année, à compter depuis le premier jour d'Octobre de chaque année jufqu\u2019au premier jour de Mai.Et en outre, toute perlonne qui tiendra une maifon dans les dites villes de Québec et de Montréal, et les fauxbourgs d\u2019icelles, en laquelle maifon il aura trois, où plus que trois foyers, aura deux feaux pour porter l\u2019eau lorfqu\u2019it arrivera que quelques maïluns dans les dites villes et fauxbourgs d\u2019icelles prendront cn feu ; et ces fcaux fcront fait de cuir, ou de peau de Loup- marin, ou de peau de quelques autres poiffons, ou d\u2019un canevas de grolle toile ferrée, peinturée en dchors et goudronnée en dedans, et tiendront pour le moins deux gallons d'eau chacun.Et toute perlinne qui tiendra une maiton dans les dites villes et fauxbourgs d\u2019icelles, dans laquelle maifon il b\u2019y aura qu\u2019un ou deux foyers, fera obligée d\u2019avoir un pareil feau, et ces feaux feront marqués des noms de batême et de famille, ou du moins des lettres initiales du nom et fur-Hom de la perfonne qui tiendra la maifon à laquelle ils appartiendront, | Et chaque perfonne qui tiendra maifon dans les dittes villes de Québec et et de Montréal, et les fauxbourgs d\u2019iceljes, fera tenGë parcillement d\u2019avoir une hache en fa mailon, pour aider à dessolir les maifons cn cas de danger de feu, à fin d'empêcher que les flammes ne s'étendent.Et chaque perfonne qui tiendra maifon dans les dites villes et fauxbourgs d\u2019icelles, devra auilhi avoir autant d\u2019échelles fixées fur le toit de fa maifon qu\u2019il y aura de cheminées ou rangs de cheminées feparées l\u2019une de l\u2019autre appar- tenantes à la dite maifon, et les fera placer de façon qu\u2019il y en aura unç qui conduife depuis le bas du toit julques à chacune des cheminées ou rangs de cheminées fcparées, à fin que s\u2019il arrive qu\u2019une cheminée prenne en feu, il fois facile d\u2019y porter de l\u2019eau pour l'éteindre.Et chaque perfonne qui tiendr& maifon dans les dites villes et fauxbourgs d'icelles, devra parcillement avoir deux beliers de dix pieds de-long et de cinq pouces de diametre, avec des chevilles de bois traverfantes qui y ferons miles, à la dittance de fix pouces l\u2019une de l\u2019autre, pour faire fauter la couverture du toit des mailons qui fc.ont en feu, ou qui feront fur le point d\u2019y être.Et dans le cas, où les perfonnes qui tiendront des maifons dans les dites villes de Quebec et Muntical, et les fauxbourgs d\u2019icelles, ne foient pas les propriétaires des dites matfons dans lelquelles elles demcureront, 11 leur fcra loifble de ratbattre la depenfe qu\u2019elles auront légitemement faites pour avoir procuré ces fcaux, échelles et beliers, comme il eft dit ci-defius, ur les maifons qu\u2019elles occuperont pour lors, et pareillement la depenfe qu\u2019elles feront en procurant de tems en tems de nouveaux feaux, échelles et bélicrs, au fur et méfure que cuux qu\u2019elles auront eu avant feront ufés, fur la rente ou pris du loyer qu\u2019elles devront pour lcs dites maifons aux propriétaires d'icclles.Et à fin que les perfonnes qui tiendront des maifons dans les villes de Québec et de Montréal, ct les fauxbourgs d\u2019icelles, fe conforment aux régle- mens {u.dits, J eff em outre Ordouné, par l'autorité Jufdite, Que fi cn aucun tems, après le premicr jour du mois de Mai prochain, le feu prend ala chemince de quelque maifon cn aucune des dites deux villes, et fauxbourgs d\u2019icelles, et qu\u2019il fe trouvera que celui qui occupera la dite mailfon n\u2019aura pus dans icelle, dans le tems de parcil feu, une hache et deux béliers, ct fur fon toit le nonibre convénable d\u2019échelles, de la maniere qui à été préferite ci- deffus, ou que la cheminée qui aura pris en feu, ou quelqu\u2019autre dgs cheminées de la dite maifon, qui auroit dû, felun les préfcriptions de cette Ordonnance, être ramonnée toutes les quatre femaines, ne l\u2019aura pas été par un ramonneur dans le dit efpace de quatre lemaines immédiutement avant pareil feu, la dite perfonne qui occupera parcille maifon fcra amendée pous fa négligence à la fomme de Quarante chelins, de laquelle une moitié apparticndra a notre Souverain Seigneur le Roi; et-l\u2019autre à toute perfonne - ; qui pourfuivra par mformation pardevant aucun Juge de Paix du ditrié dans lequel paralle maifon fera fituée, Icquel
