this is an A, which means it was excellent.” Jodoin explained that the regional campaign, having reached 97 per cent of its objective, was more successful than many of the other regional campaigns in the province.Times, he said, were hard across Quebec this holiday season, and every ounce of support received was appreciated.Among the groups listed as having made significant contributions to the campaign, organizers thanked the Eastern Townships School Board, Bishop’s University, financial institutions like the National Bank and RBC, union GORDON LAMBIE Leaders of the regional Centraide campaign pose with a banner indicating their total for the year. From left, Marie Croteau, vice-president of development with Wolters Kluwer; Lesson learned.Serendipity “The occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.” On my second day here, after I had done my first grocery trip, I was grabbing what was left of my bags from my roommate’s car in the garage when I saw an older lady doing the same.I offered to help her carry her bags to her apartment, which was directly above mine. She was very gracious, and I left.Fast-forward two weeks, and l’m in my room struggling to find a breaking news story for a class assignment when my upstairs neighbor knocks on my door. She wanted to know if maintenance had been to her place to fix the rattle that her furnace was causing in my vent.A bit annoyed that I was being bothered in my research for this, I put on a smile and said yes, they had and that the rattle is gone. That’s when serendipity struck. She replied “I'm so happy they came.I was out most of the day at this restaurant opening to help my friend, who is the chef. She’s blind.” My eyes got wide.“A blind chef?Opening a restaurant? In Chicago?” I told her about my predicament and how I've been looking for a story for the past three hours, and she burst out laughing.“Well wouldn't you know! That's fantastic! I'm actually going there for lunch on Sunday, and you're more than welcome to come with me! I'll call her up to let her know that a reporter is going to be coming with me!” And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I got to meet Laura Martinez and break the story of the first blind chef to ever open a restaurant in the U.S.It was amazing to see her cook. She has her entire kitchen memorized, from the contents of the drawers to the location of every counter-top utensil.Plus the food was delicious. And to think that that great story actually started two weeks ago with me offering to help my elderly neighbor carry her bags to her apartment.I guess that’s the second lesson: the smallest of things can lead to the greatest of stories. For me, this happened in a literal sense in that I got a great story to report on, but it can, and should, be taken in a much broader sense. In parting, all I have to say is: David, don’t touch my stuff.ETRC to host first scholar-in-residence lecture Kirkey to ask, “Where is Stephen Harper taking Canada?” Record Staff LENNOXVILLE e Eastern Townships Resource Centre is holding its first scholar- in-residence lecture on Wednesday, Feb.4 at Bishop's University. The talk is scheduled for noon in the Cleghorn Room in McGreer Hall.As part of its scholar-in-residence program, Bishop's welcomes a visiting scholar from the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh. This program is due to be launched during the first week of February.Christopher Kirkey, who is director of the Center for the Study of Canada and a full professor of political science at SUNY Plattsburgh, will be at Bishop’s offering several lectures on Canadian foreign policy, American foreign policy and Quebec politics. On Feb.4, under the title “Where is Stephen Harper taking Canada?” Dr.Kirkey will explore how Canadian foreign policy has evolved under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In 2011, Harper secured the majority that he had been seeking since the Conservative’s minority election victory of January 2006.Among other things, the victory resulted a series of policies and practices that have re-oriented and could fundamentally change the direction of Canadian foreign policy. The shift in priorities away from Canada's traditional post-Second World War focus on liberal internationalism, Europe and the U.S., has positioned Ottawa with a clear focus on the use of force in international politics, and emerging markets. The core elements of this strategy appear to be a demonstrated consistent willingness to pursue, in partnership with longstanding allies, a combat-oriented mission for Canada in world affairs, and a clear interest in enhanced relations with China, India, Brazil and other emerging economies. This conversation will explore these significant shifts in Canadian foreign policy under Harper. The event is free to the public.Ben by Daniel Shelton 7 2015 Damet Shelton Digtr by MWAM WHATS WITH YOU?WE RETIREES GET OUR IVE BEEN KICKS WHENEVER WE CAN/ LISTENING TO THE MORNING TRAFFIC AG £— REPORT.ESF D ç a | ; St.Francois MNA Guy Hardy, at right, will preside over the “blind supper” on Saturday at the Découvertes Sherbrooke food festival. Here, he is shown practicing his blind tasting skills at the event launch.that this year the timing worked out to do something quite special.“There was a hole Sunday night, and Feb.1 is the Super Bowl,” Chagnon said, explaining that Sherbrooke MNA Luc Fortin agreed right away to be the honorary president of a special gourmet Super Bowl party for 600.Découvertes Savoureuses opens at 1 p-m.on Friday, and lasts until 5 p.m.on Sunday, not including the Super Bowl party.Entry to the exhibition floor is $20, although Saturday and Sunday night’s special events have a separate cost of $90 and $10 respectively.More information about the event is available by calling 819 575-7025 or by email at info@decouvertes- savoureuses.com.; Oil prices drop as global warming rises By David Suzuki ith oil prices plunging from Wes than $100 a barrel last summer to below $50 now, the consequences of a petro-fuelled economy are hitting home — especially in Alberta, where experts forecast a recession. The province's projected budget surplus has turned into a $500-mil- lion deficit on top of a $12-billion debt, with predicted revenue losses of $11 billion or more over the next three or four years if prices stay low or continue to drop as expected.Alberta’s government is talking about service reductions, pub- lic-sector wage and job cuts and even increased or new taxes on individuals.TD Bank says Canada as a whole can expect deficits over the next few years unless Ottawa takes money from its contingency fund. It’s absurd that a lower price on a single commodity could have such a profound economic impact, but that’s what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket and fail to plan for such contingencies. With a population and oil- and-gas production profile similar to Alberta, Europe’s largest petroleum producer, Norway, is also feeling the impacts. But much higher taxes on industry, majority state ownership of the country’s largest oil-and-gas company and an approximately $900-billion sovereign wealth fund built from oil revenues are cushioning the fall. Some see low fuel prices as good news, but there are many downsides. With driving becoming less costly, more cars and trucks could be on the road, which is good for the auto industry but bad in terms of pollution, climate change and traffic accidents. And because the price of oil is now lower than the cost to extract oilsands bitumen, the industry is starting to put the brakes on rapid expansion plans — bad news for workers and businesses in Fort McMurray and those heavily invested in the industry but good news for the planet.Recent research shows most of Canada’s oilsands bitumen — as well as all Arctic oil and gas, most of Canada’s coal and some conventional oil and gas — must be left in the ground if the world is to avoid a global temperature increase of more than 2 C above pre-in- dustrial levels, the internationally agreed-upon threshold for limiting catastrophic impacts of global warming. The report, by researchers at University College London's Institute for Sustainable Resources and published in the journal Nature, concludes a third of the world’s oil reserves, half of gas reserves and more than 80 per cent of coal reserves must not be burned before 2050.The study also found that carbon capture and storage, touted as one way to continue exploiting and burning fossil fuels, is too new, expensive and limited to make enough of a difference by 2050.Study co-author Paul Ekins told National Geographic that putting hundreds of billions of dollars into fossil fuel exploration and development is “deeply irrational” economic behaviour.“What would be ideal,” he said, would be to “use the opportunity of this fall in the oil price to start instituting a global carbon tax, which would take some of the volatility out of the prices.” Removing fossil fuel subsidies would also help.John Stone, a Canadian scientist and lead author on the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, told CBC the UCL study “is another wake-up call to snap us out of our denial of climate change.” With 2014 confirmed as the hottest year on record, and 13 of the hottest 15 years having occurred since 2000, we can’t afford to ignore the consequences.According to researchers, the odds that natural variability is causing today’s climate change are less than one in 27 million! It’s astounding that, in the face of such overwhelming evidence from sci-| entists worldwide, people continue to deny the problem exists or that humans are responsible and can or should do anything about it.It's especially irresponsible when energy conservation and cleaner fuel alternatives offer so many economic benefits, including job creation, greater stability and reduced health-care costs. As world leaders prepare for the UN cli- THE RECORD 1195 Galt East, Sherbrooke, Quebec JIG 1Y7 Fax: 819-821-3179 EMAIL: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com WessiTE: www_sherbrookerecord.com SHARON MCCuULLY PUBUSHER .(819) 569-9511 JoHN EDWARDS NEws EDITOR .{819) 569-6345 STEPHEN BLAKE CORRESP.EDITOR .(819) 569-6345 SERGE GAGNON CHIEF PRESSMAN .(819) 569-9931 DEPARTMENTS ACCOUNTING .2220 0000000 00 (819) 569-9511 ADVERTISING .0.50000000 00 À (819) 569-9525 CIRCULATION .22202000 0000000 (819) 569-9528 NEWSROOM .222022000000 0000 (819) 569-6345 KNOWLTON OFFICE SB VICTORIA STREET, KNOWLTON, QUEBEC, JOE 1VO TEL: (450) 242-1188 Fax: (450) 243-5155 PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS GST PST TOTAL Quessc: 1 YEAR 13560 6.78 1353 $155.91 6 MONTHS 7119 356 710 $81.85 3 MONTHS 36.16 181 360 $41.57 ON-LINE SUBSCRIPTIONS Quesec: 1 YEAR 71.50 358 7.13 $82.21 1 MONTH 649 032 065 $7.46 Rates for out of Quebec and for other services available on request. The Record is published daily Monday to Friday.Back copies of The Record are available. The Record was founded on February 9, 1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.PM#0040007682 Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to The Record, 1195 Galt East, Sherbrooke, QC J1G 1Y7 Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA Cs Soni ada With 2014 confirmed.as the hottest year on record, and.13 13 of th the hottest 15 years rs Having oc occurred since 2000, we can’t afford to ignore | the e consequences.1 mate summit later this year, we must look at the recent market meltdown as an opportunity to shift away from fossil fuels. It'll be much easier and less costly to get on with it now than to wait until we're left with few choices.etter | DEAR EDITOR: n Sunday, Jan.4, my husband O: Thad a car accident at 4 p.m.[ completely lost control in a bend. The road not only slants toward the ditch but, dute to the fact that the entire road was a sheet of ice, I had no chance at all of correcting the direction of my car.I am very baffled as to why the trucks had not sanded/salted the road at all by 4:00.At least then Imight have had some chance of staying on the road. The impact of the crash threw me against my window and my left shoul der broke it.It was wearing my seat belt and was going well below the posted speed.~The police officer that arrived at the [icene suggested calling the ambulance. She did and ! however, his shot was blocked by Montpetit.Nevertheless, the Phoenix lost one of its key players during this span, when Jeremy Roy left the game after being checked from behind by Jere- mie Fraser, who was ejected from the game for the hit.Roy would be diagnosed with a contusion. The visitors added insult to injury with two goals in a minute, from Gauthier and Nicolas Aube-Kubel, putting the game out of reach for the home team. The second and third periods were marked with many penalties on both sides, with the teams combining for 59 penalty minutes overall.Val d'Or went 3-for-9 on the power play, while Sherbrooke was 2-for-7.After Friday's game, Sherbrooke’s head coach Judes Vallee admitted that it has not been an easy game for his team.“It was a frustrating game”, he said.“Even if we were able to come from behind and had chances to score, we have not been able to take advantage of it.” On Fraser's hit on Roy, Vallee mentioned that his team will not shy away at sending the videotape to the league. The following day, the Phoenix had a meeting with the Halifax Mooseheads and their star player Nikolaj Ehlers.Like the day before, Sherbrooke lacked rhythm in the opening frame, and the visitors scored twice.Shortly after the 10- minute mark, Philippe Gadoury scored his 19th goal of the year, on a power play.Thirty-one seconds later, Samuel Leblanc increased Halifax's lead to 2-0.In the last minute of the period, Cameron Darcy put Sherbrooke on board, with his 11th goal.In the second stanza, Sherbrooke’s Nicolas Poulin tied the game at 2-2, with a shot from the faceoff circle. Then, the Phoenix would take the lead with a goal from Storto.Halifax later re-took the lead, with goals from Connor Moynihan the line.” To make matters more difficult, Kyle Desmarais and Mike Andrews both fouled out with three minutes to play.Majid Naji was the only Gaiter in double figures with 12 points. The women continued to show improvement but are still winless in conference play after two close defeats to Laval. On Friday a spirited fourth quarter rally led by veteran Eloisa Katz enabled the Gaiters to close a double-digit deficit to just four points at 65-61, with just over two minutes remain- the Phoenix and Timo Meir, but Wieser replied with his 31st, tying the score at 4-4.In the third period, Wieser, Storto and Darcy added an additional goal to their stats, giving the Phoenix their 25th victory of the season.Sherbrooke was 1 for 2 on the power play, while Halifax was 2 for 8.In his post-game comments, Judes Vallee was satisfied with most of what he saw.“We have i 1 SHERBROOKE T: e Phoenix closed out c their weekend with a come-from-behind 4-3 (OT) road win over the Blainville- Boisbriand Armada.} Swiss forward Kai Schweri twas the hero, as ha scored a natural hat trick 0 Yead the ‘Phoenix back from a 3-1 third- period deficit. He scored at 7:48 and 18:44 of the third, and jgdded the game-winner at 2:53 mada ing in the game. However Laval responded with a 104 run to quash the Gaiters’ upset hopes and win 75-65.Katz finished with a team high 15 points while Edith No- blecilla and Noemie Hamel- Petit chipped in with 13 points apiece. In Saturday's contest, both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm as Laval managed to register a 48-36 win.The Gaiters, who shot just 23.3 percent from the floor, were led by Hamel-Petit who tal lied nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.showed character. We were losing 2-0 and we came back. The penalty kill did a good job. However, it seems like we have some difficulties in the first period. We will have to correct that facet of our play against Blainville-Boisbriand.” The Phoenix are back at home on Wednesday night, when they host the Drum- mondville Voltigeurs.Faceoff at the Sports Palace is set for 7 p.m.Armada in OT of the extra session. All three of this goals came on the power play. The other Sherbrooke goal came from Carn Neill, while the Armada got a pair from] Nikita Jevpalovs and a single from Marc-Antoine Bouillon.| Alex Bureau made 34 saves to pick up the win Samuel Mon- tambault took the loss for! cass@casthomes.ca www.casshomes.ca Newer hearing aids are often invisible ASK DOCTOR K By Anthony L.Komaroff, M.D.DEAR DOCTOR K: After years of living with hearing loss, I am soon going to get my first hearing aid.Anything I should know ahead of time to be prepared?DEAR READER: The first thing many new users of hearing aids notice is that sounds seem strange.Think of how different your own voice sounds when you listen to a tape recording of yourself. You may also be more aware than ever before of your footsteps, your car's motor, the sounds you make as you chew your food, and just about any other environmental noise. Many hearing aids can be adjusted to lower the volume of unwanted noise. But more important, with time, your brain will get better at tuning it out.You may also find that the hearing aid doesn’t do one of the things you'd most hoped that it would: understand every word in a conversation.Remember that hearing every word isn’t necessary. The goal is to follow conversations easily in different environments.Continue to rely on the visual cues that you've been using to understand words, like lip movements, facial expressions and hand gestures.Getting used to a hearing aid takes time, usually at least a month to six weeks. But it may take as long as several months. If you don’t notice a marked improvement by the end of the first month, however, your hearing aid may not be right for you. While you're adjusting to your hearing aid, remember these tips: — Start off with one-on-one conversations, which are the easiest ones to understand.Gradually work up to conversations with two or more people.— Realize that understanding conversations in noisy places, such as restaurants and parties, will be difficult at first. With time and practice, your ability to hear in these settings will improve.Watch the person who is speaking so you can pick up gestures and other visual cues.Position yourself close to the person who is speaking.— Install a telephone amplifier at home to help you hear telephone conversations.— If using the phone is a problem, consider email or text messaging instead.— Finally, wear your hearing aid.The more you use it, the faster you are likely to adjust to it, and the better your hearing will be.I'm often surprised by how some of my patients resist my suggestion that they get a hearing aid. They remember what hearing aids used to look like: large, unattractive objects stuck inside the ear, visible to everyone. They're concerned that a hearing aid will make them look old. They also have heard that hearing aids don’t improve the most common problem they have: hearing conversations in noisy places. They've heard that hearing aids may make the voice of someone speaking to them louder, but that they also make the noise louder. So it’s not easier to hear conversations.Today’s hearing aids are tiny and often invisible. They also are a lot better at amplifying a voice nearby without similarly increasing the noise.Dr.Komaroff is a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School.Though absent, you are always near.Still missed, loved, always dear.ALTON, CHILDREN and The Record | newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2015 ‘Page 9' At 13, she started taking drugs and running away from home MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2015 Dear Annie: I have three siblings. The youngest sister, “Jess,” has always had problems. At 13, she started taking drugs and running away from home. She spent five years in prison, and when she got out, my older sister offered to let Jess live with her so she could get a job and go to school.Jess was OK for about 18 months. Then she developed back problems and was unable to work. After several disagreements with my sister, she moved out to live with her boyfriend, whom she later married. It’s been downhill from there.A few nights before Thanksgiving, Jess knocked on my door with her husband and their dog.Apparently, they are homeless.Neither of them can stick to a job on a regular basis.I'm sure Jess suffers from some type of mental illness, and now I think her husband does, too.I told Jess she could stay for three months and then would have to leave.1 hope she can get some assistance to help her get back on her feet.Do you have any guidance for me?— Lost and Confused Dear Lost: It is compassionate of you to take in your sister and her family, but she needs more help than you can give her.The best thing you can do for Jess is to look into local social services that will help her and her husband with mental health counseling, job training and housing. Please contact the National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org), the U.S.Dept.of Housing and Urban Development homeless assistance (hud.gov/homeless) and the National Coalition for the Homeless (nationalhomeless.org).Dear Annie: My 29-year-old stepson refuses to give gifts to family members at Christmas.A few years ago, I asked him why, and he said he doesn’t believe in the crass commercialism at Christmas.Yet he and his wife accept gifts from all of us on the holiday. He also doesn’t send a card or phone on his Dad’s birthday or mine. What do we do?Do we respect his views on commercialism and not give him gifts?Do we ignore it and hope he comes around? He and his wife earn plenty of money and can afford it.But that’s beside the point. It is the effort and caring that is lacking.Happy 95% birthday to Gertrude Raymond 77 Main, North Hatley, QC, JOB 2C0 on Monday, January 26, 2015 A remarkable mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend.Lots of love, from family and friends “95th Birthday Annie’s Mailbox — Wondering Dear Wondering: It is perfectly logical to stop buying presents for him, saying, “We know you don’t support the crass commercialism of the holiday, so we are respecting your beliefs and not purchasing any gifts for you.” Of course, that won't help the relationship, which seems a little strained. This is your stepson, so Dad should handle it.Has Dad told him how much it would mean to get a call or card on his birthday? Some kids simply don’t connect the dots or realize the importance of remembering a loved one’s special day.It helps to remind them.Gently.Dear Annie: This is in response to “PO’d in New York,” who said you two “need a lobotomy” for telling readers that doggie paw prints don’t belong on a sympathy card.Annie, I have had pets, mostly cats, since I was 6 years old.I have a pet cemetery in my backyard where five of my beloved cats are buried.I have two pet rescue cats whom I love with all my heart. They are a part of my family. But I would never, ever sign their names or put their paw prints on a sympathy card.In fact, I would be terribly upset if someone sent me a sympathy card with their animal's names and paw prints on it.I just had to let you know that not every animal lover agrees with “PO’d.” — A Cat Lover in Connecticut Dear Annie: My mother is 90 years old.She recently loaned one of my nephews a large sum of money to purchase a house.“Todd” and his wife borrowed enough for the house, a new washer and dryer, and then more for homeowners insurance and property taxes. They moved in last August and have not paid anything toward the principal or interest. My mother took the money from her savings, paid for the property in full, and let the couple put the house in their names. When Mom got the loan agreement papers drawn up, Todd told her he “didn’t feel comfortable signing” and he didn’t.Today, neither Todd nor his wife acknowledge the loan or take responsibility for payments. In no way was this supposed to be a gift. This was made clear to them when « they asked Mom for the money, because they could not get the money from any bank. They agreed to everything until it came time to sign the papers.Since then, they have refused to answer the door when Mom goes to the house, and will not answer or return phone calls from her.But he still had the nerve to call her when he needed money — and she gave it to him! My mother has spent most of her savings on Todd, and the pension she receives every month is not enough to cover her expenses. Is this elder abuse? What can we do?— Love My Mom Dear Love: Taking financial advantage of your mother is indeed a form of elder abuse. The National Center on Elder Abuse (ncea.aoa.gov) lists information about elder abuse, as well as where to report it in your mother’s state. Please do so before any more damage is done.Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Animal Lover,” whose son and his wife are neglecting their cat.I was shocked and appalled by all of them.“Animal Lover” is worried about this coming between her and her son.I would like to think she would be more worried about the cat’s condition. Her son should not be allowed to have any type of animal for a pet.If she has any decency and backbone, she would stand up for what is right and take the cat to the vet, with or without her son’s permission. And if he or his wife said a peep about it, she should call the authorities immediately and let the chips fall. And why didn’t the vet take action?Isn’t that part of his or her job?Mom should stand up to her son and do what is right.Now.— J.W.Dear J.W.: We were bombarded with letters similar to yours. Here's one that is less emotionally charged, but with good advice: Dear Annie: This is for “Animal Lover,” whose son’s cat is neglected.Reporting this to the authorities may well result in the cat being seized and euthanized, and the owners billed for euthanasia.Dental disease is a frequent issue in aging pets, and may go unnoticed until far advanced, especially in a skittish cat. While not condoning the owner’s lack of concern, it must be said that there are pets that suffer from chronic conditions that never are cured, despite the best efforts of owners and veterinarians.Skin conditions and digestive problems are long-term health management challenges for many pet owners. That said, “Animal Lover” should make a veterinary appointment, collect the cat and have its medical needs taken care of.There’s already a rift with her son over this, and he obviously is not going to take care of the dental problems.Mom may as well handle it as fret over it.— Loving My Shelter Dogs Dear Annie: I am a female resident physician. In medical school, I fell in love with “Jay,” a classmate. We have been together for four years.Jay is currently a resident physician in another state. Two years ago, I brought Jay home to meet my father and stepmother. Some of Jay’s favorite topics of discussion are American history and politics. My father deemed him aggressive and argumentative.Dad also says Jay doesn’t really love me because he didn’t hug or kiss me during that visit. In actuality, I had asked Jay to tone down the PDA in front of my father.Later, my stepmother butted in and told me that my whole family hates Jay, which is a complete lie and wreaked havoc on my relationships with my mother and sister. No matter how much I tell Dad that Jay is a good man, | cannot override his first impression.Jay has not been invited back, so that makes it doubly hard to let Dad see a different side of him.My mother says Dad secretly hopes Jay and I will break up due to the long- distance relationship. But we see each other every month and are very much in love.Last April, Jay proposed. We're both buried in student loans, so there is no engagement ring at the moment, and we have no set plans for a wedding. We've shared the news only with Jay's family and our closest friends. My father and stepmother do not know, and I am terrified to tell them.Dad has a history of cutting people out of his life over petty things.(He once stopped speaking to his own mother for five years.) Dad abandoned our family when I was 13 in order to marry my stepmother.Since then I've bent over backward to be the perfect daughter. This stresses me out.I don’t want my relationship with Dad to crumble.Any advice?— Dr.Confused Dear Dr.: You cannot live your life to please your controlling father.Part of being an adult is making your own decisions and having the courage to stand by them.If your father stops speaking to you, so be it.Get counseling if you need help.Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
